Fla. International 3, Florida 62

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Following weeks of close calls, controversy and criticism, top-ranked Florida got to play on cruise control.

The Gators enjoyed every minute of it.

Tim Tebow accounted for three touchdowns, Brandon Spikes returned an interception for a score and Florida extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 21 games with a 62-3 victory over Florida International on Saturday.

The Gators improved to 11-0 for just the second time in school history and need two more wins—against Florida State and Alabama—to earn a shot at repeating as national champions.

After surviving several struggles during Southeastern Conference play, the Gators probably needed an easy week. The Golden Panthers (3-8) played the part to perfection.

“It was real nice,” guard Mike Pouncey said. “We had a long SEC run, then to go out there and have a game like this, where we can rest starters the second half, was real good for our team. We’ll be ready to go Saturday.”

Florida scored touchdowns on eight of 11 offensive possessions. The only scoreless drives came when Caleb Sturgis missed a 52-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and when Florida ran out the clock in the final seconds of each half.

Spikes started the onslaught when he intercepted Paul McCall’s pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown, his fourth INT return for a score in the last two years.

“He does have a knack,” coach Urban Meyer said. “Great anticipation.”

The defense didn’t let up, sacking McCall twice and holding the Golden Panthers to 189 yards and 11 first downs.

Tebow, hoping to solidify a spot as a Heisman Trophy finalist, had one of his best games of the season. It came against a defense that had allowed nearly 500 yards a game.

Tebow completed 17 of 25 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns and ran seven times for 102 yards and a score. His rushing touchdown—a 55-yard scramble on a third-and-2 play—was the longest run of his career. Tebow rolled left after faking a handoff, then took off against man-to-man coverage and ended up tiptoeing the sideline.

“They forgot to account for me,” he said.

It was Tebow’s 54th career touchdown, breaking the SEC record held by former LSU star Kevin Faulk.

Tebow also had a 27-yard TD pass to Chris Rainey early in the second quarter that made it 21-0 and an 18-yarder to roommate Riley Cooper on the opening drive of the third.

Rainey and Jeff Demps had rushing scores. Backup John Brantley had three TD passes, including a perfectly thrown 31-yarder to Frankie Hammond Jr. on a fourth-and-11 play with 2:28 remaining.

“It was definitely fun,” linebacker Ryan Stamper said. “After the starters got out, it’s just fun watching guys who go real hard in practice but don’t really play as much get a chance to go in the game and play.”

The Swamp started to empty early in the fourth, with Tebow standing on the sideline wearing a headset and many other starters done for the day.

The Gators finished with 584 yards, 30 first downs and no punts.

The Golden Panthers—45-point underdogs paid $425,000 to play in Gainesville—missed a field goal try in the second quarter and turned the ball over on downs twice in the second half.

McCall completed 9 of 21 passes for 134 yards. Kendall Berry ran 13 times for 26 yards.

“We played hard, but we’re not at the level of the Florida Gators right now,” FIU coach Mario Cristobal said.

Things could get tougher in Florida’s home finale against rival Florida State, which eked out a 29-26 win over Maryland on Saturday to become bowl eligible for the 28th consecutive year. Then again, the Seminoles have posed little threat to the Gators the last five years.

“That’d pretty much make their season, if they beat us,” Stamper said. “Like I said, we have a lot to accomplish and a lot of goals, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem.”

it seems like every article i read always stomps on FIU, and that needs to stop! i'm a big FIU football fan, currently a senior, and following them since the first game! lets go back to the beginning of UF football, or FSU football, or even Alabama football. i'm sure none of those schools, or top BCS schools started off in division 1 as power houses. let's even look back at the 1979 season when the gators went 0-10-1. so enough of all the talking of how FIU will never be big, they will never have a winning season. give them time, let them find their groove, and let them start winning. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a football team.

    FF-II-II FIU!!!!!

Great post Holden about strength of schedules. Florida has played one team with 8 wins this year, their only ranked opponent LSU, next best opponent? Kentucky? HA! Alabama, I will not argue, it would make no sense. TCU has played nine win Utah, @ nine win BYU, @ eight win Clemson. One could argue their schedule is just as tough, maybe better? BYU Utah Clemson are 18, 22, 15 in this weeks polls, LSU is 17 Hmmm. I'm not a TCU homer either! I tn\hink Florida has a really good team, maybe will win it all again. One question: Who will pay more for the refs in thee SEC Championship Florida or Alabama?

Blah blah blah-crybabies are here week after week. If you don't like the Gators, go to your teams blog and post there. I do have to say though that crying on the Gators blog is rather humorous to us Gator fans. There are always excuses, schedules, refs, it's all bullcrap and you just need to face the facts, your teams are just NOT good enough, that's it, enough said. Our team looked awesome today!!!! We are no. 1, we will stay no. 1 and look forward to Alabama on Dec 5, it's just another step on the way to our perfect season. GO GATORS!!!

The Florida Gators are #1 still after playing FIU, pathetic. FIU isn't good at all, neither is Charleston Southern, and yet the "so called #1" plays them. If a team is #1, it should be because of effort and strength of schedule (in and out of conference), not because of this stupid system! Teams that play way weaker programs should be dropped in the rankings since they aren't showing their full potential and should play teams of their caliber, not cupcake teams from Divsion II or the Sun Belt. Don't even get me started with Alabama and their battle against all-mighty Chattanooga

Why dont you longhorns man up and Play TCU instead of little 12 north champ and then we would have the top 4 teams playoff everybody wants.. this isn't a hard schedule by any means... Your dumb neighbors to the north were talking the same trash last year and got spanked... And i'm by far not a Gayturds fans.

Im not an Florida fan by far but this schedule isn't all you make it out to be Longhorns. You play 3 decent teams and think your great. You gotta be on your game every week in the SEC.. Your dumb neighbors too the north were saying the same stuff last year and got whipped. You guys did put up a better game than the way over-rated big-10.. Pac-10 would get same treatment... This years BCS champion will be determined on Dec 5th..

To all the people on here talking about Bama and Florida with their weak teams this week:

Alabama and then Florida have the strongest schedules of all the undefeated teams, including Texas, TCU, Cincy, and Boise St. so.....STFU

Gators looked great, this should really help Tebows Heisman hopes ,it isnt every team that would take a chance this late in the year to play a power house like FIU and lose their number1 ranking. But you know SEC teams play good teams every time out just listen to their fans no weak little sisters on their schedules. Of course Alabama did even better they shut out the powerhouse team they played, must have a better defence than Fla. well on second thought it wasnt to great against Utah last year!

Did you guys have a nice scrimmage?

It's shameful to schedule that sort of game in November. If y'all insist on playing the Mississippi Girls School for the Blind four times, at least play them in September.

I'm not a Florioda fan, my wife is, but how any of you folks can look at who Florida is played and call it a 'weak schedule', you need your head examined. I personally don't think they are going to beat Alabama for the SEC Championship, but even if they do or don't, which remains to be seen, I truly can't see Boise State or TCU going undefeated having to play LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Florida State creamed BYU earlier this year, and their barely bowl eligible! IF these teams had to play Ole Miss, my Arkansas team, Tennessee, Auburn, Mississippi State South Carolina, they wouldn't be undefeated. Even Kentucky and Vanderbilt have their moments,

I can't believe the Gators played such a weak team! I mean this is ridiculous! Nobody else would play such a weak team, oh wait a minute, I forgot. I forgot that the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide played the powerhouse of Southern football yesterday, Chattanooga!!!!!!!!!! Take a good look at all the teams schedules. You will find cupcakes on every teams schedule. If you don't, then you need to learn how to read! GO GATORS!!!!!!!!!!!

How in the hell can you Gaytor fans, justify being ranked #1,.....with the BS schedule you guys play ???.....oh yeh,..I know,.........by running up the score on high school teams that you play !!.......2 minutes left in the game,.......and YOU'RE STILL throwing TD's !!!....I can only hope and pray, that it comes back to haunt you some day,...you over hyped,...over ranked,...overrated, pieces of $hit !!!....I'm not a big fan of FSU,....but I'll sure be pulling for them next week !!

Fyi - in addition to Tebow, most of the other starters were also replaced following the first Gator score in the 3rd qtr. After that, Brantley threw 3 TDs to 3 different back-up receivers. If I'm a second stringer, I'm hoping like hell I get to catch a TD pass in ANY game, no matter who the competition is!
Like I said - you can't blame the back-ups for wanting to make plays and score points...
I honestly don't believe this was done to embarrass Fla Int. in any way, shape or form.
One more thing - a lot of folks are going to be really surprised at how good Brantley is next year! It will be a more pass-oriented offense and he's going to put up some monster numbers - you may quote me! Gonna miss Tebow for sure but Gators will still contend, and that's all you can ask of your team...

Tebow was out of the game shortly after the start of the 3rd.
Why not let Brantley air it out and try to put some points on the board?
I mean, we all knew they couldn't lose this game - but once it was in hand they let the back-ups play. Of course the back-ups are going to try their hardest! They want to make first string!!! What is the problem with letting them play balls out??? They rarely even get to play!
    Sheesh!
If Tebow had played the whole game, then you have a legitimate complaint - otherwise, sorry, but you don't ...

ok mr starnes you are correct about the dates but point being why is fl running it up in
a game that shouldnt be on their schedule in november. bama ran up their quick 35 pts
today then shut it down & ran out the clock with the running game. fl doesnt throw more than 20 times a game on average but there they were tossing it all over the field slowing the clock down when theyre up 50.

You're not much of a historian bud...
Gators were undefeated in the 1995 regular season and played Nebraska for the championship. Yep - Gators got smoked (62-24) but in all reality the 1995 nebraska team is considered one of the all-time best college teams ever.
The next season, the Gators returned many starters from 95 and defeated Fla State for the 1996 NC.
    Beat them 52-20...

If you want to try and throw down some insults, at least your facts straight...
    Peace out

Gator fan here - glad to see that they played well against this level of competition - happy they took Tebow out early in the 3rd. No reason to risk injury and he's got a tough game next week - Fla State will test them for sure - that's FSU's real bowl game and they'd love to knock off UF.
Before it's assumed I'm an idiot for suggesting the potential for a trap here, it's a huge rivalry on the scale of Fla-Ga... While the Noles have been inconsisent as hell, they did beat the crap out of BYU, barely lost to Ga Tech and beat both North Carolina schools (NC beat Miami and Va Tech) so FSU could rise to the occassion. Rivalry games are brutal - look at Cal/Stanford (the Big Game) - USC crushed Cal, Stanford crushed USC and yet Cal beat Stanford tonight - perfect example that you can't always rely on the stats or previous outcomes of specific games - even common opponents...
If the Gators play well, it's a 2 TD victory, but if not - look out!
My money is on Tebow vs. FSU - time for a dominant game leading into to the SECCG. Defense is going to have to step it up big time as well - but I sure hope Meyer has them focused on Bowden & co. next week and not looking ahead to Bama.

reabjc you mentioned the 96 gator team - they tried to defend their title the next year & received a beating from nebraska that no defending champ should ever have to take. of cousre fib received a similar beating today except they were not playing for a national title.

Did Spikes gouge the recievers eyes out before he intercepted that pass?Ha! Hope it's a good game, but I hope Bama wins.Either way I don't think Colt McCoy will know what the hell to think when he faces either of those defenses! ( I think he'll look like a jr high qb...like Gino Torretta looked back in '92)....If Spikes is playing,Ingram better have his "windshield" on his helmet ! I heard the officials cut Spikes's fingernails before each game now.....?
