Jacquizz Rodgers, Canfield lead OSU win

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP)—Oregon State needed a win at Washington State to keep its Rose Bowl hopes alive, and made sure that would happen right from the start.

The No. 20 Beavers scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and rolled to a 42-10 win on Saturday, setting up the possibility that their rivalry game against Oregon on Dec. 3 will decide the Pac-10 representative for the bowl game.

“Obviously everyone knows what’s out there,” said quarterback Sean Canfield, who threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns, and directed the Beavers to 567 yards of offense.

Oregon State has already beaten Stanford, so if Arizona loses and Oregon State beats first-place Oregon next weekend, the Beavers would be packing for Pasadena.

“One hundred guys have banded together for one purpose, winning the upcoming ballgame,” said Oregon State linebacker Keaton Kristick. “We have the possibility of going to the Rose Bowl or a big game like that.”

Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns as Oregon State (8-3, 6-2) won its fourth straight game and sixth of the past seven. Coach Mike Riley praised the team for recovering from a 2-2 start to put themselves in line for a big-money bowl game.

“They never quit,” Riley said, predicting the game against Oregon going down as “one of the great matchups ever in the Civil War.”

The Cougars (1-10, 0-8) lost their eighth straight. Kevin Lopina, making his first start at quarterback since being benched after the second game, completed 15 of 32 for 133 yards. But the Cougars were held to 192 yards, including 59 on the ground.

Still, they trailed just 21-10 at halftime.

“We felt we were in the game,” Lopina said. “We had the ball for long periods of time. One play here or there and it would have been a whole different game.”

It was the fifth consecutive game in which the Cougars have given up at least 40 points. They rank last in the nation, allowing 511 yards per game.

The contest was played before just 16,167 fans with Washington State students already on fall break and cold, windy weather blowing through Pullman.

Oregon State opened with a crisp 80-yard drive, and Canfield hit Damola Adeniji for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Canfield completed 22 of 29 passes and was intercepted once.

Washington State replied with its own drive that stalled on the 11, and Pat Rooney kicked a 29-yard field goal. It was only the second time this season the Cougars have scored in the first quarter, and they’ve been outscored 173-6 in the opening quarter this year.

“It’s no use driving the ball if you don’t finish and punch it in,” said Washington State offensive lineman Reed Lesuma.

Rodgers ran in from 10 yards out on Oregon State’s next possession, and Canfield hit Joe Halahuni on a 10-yard scoring pass for a 21-3 lead midway through the second quarter.

Washington State drove 80 yards in the final 3 minutes of the half, with Dwight Tardy scoring from the 1 on fourth down to cut the halftime deficit to 21-10.

Oregon State’s Markus Wheaton scored on a 10-yard run after a 13-play drive that was kept alive by a 12-yard reception by Colby Prince on fourth-and-5. Rodgers added a 39-yard run early in the fourth, his 19th touchdown of the season tying the school record held by Steven Jackson and Ken Simonton.

Riley picked up the 64th win at Oregon State, breaking a tie with Tommy Prothro for second on the career list. Lon Stiner leads with 74 wins.

Washington State has not led a game in regulation this year, its only win coming on a field goal by Nico Grasu in overtime to beat Southern Methodist 30-27 on Sept. 19. The Cougars trailed that game until a tying touchdown pass with 28 seconds left.

Washington State finishes its season next week with its rivalry game against Washington.

“It will be my last Apple Cup and I’m going to enjoy every moment of it,” said the Cougars’ Xavier Hicks, who intercepted Canfield on Saturday.

it's a shame that the CW will be the last good game both these teams will play this year. Winner will get Ohio st. and looser will get 3rd in the Big 12. Both games will be a blowout.

Hey Dawg it's all good, I like arguments, besides looks like I hurts Jay M. 's little feelers

    I apologize Jay M.

There is one statistic i think you for got, that is the at home factor, though I will admit the Beavers got us in 2007 (injuries are a b!tch). The lead QB is out this time though.

Oh and for the record I AM NOT GUARANTEEING A WIN, it just very very unlikely to be a blow out against the ducks

Who knows they may unleash Blount --------- Finally

Web ...... yes, it was VERY tough for me to concede the 10 points for Oregon in my 63-10 prediction.

Kaddy ..... im not serious in my outrageous predictions, its just comical to me how many Ducks fans i can get in an uproar every single week by predicting they will get smoked. i think one week i predicted they would lose something like 123-0. people literally come back to me after the game and rub my face in it that my prediction was wrong. DAMN ..... and i thought for sure the Ducks were going to lose 123-0. lol. seriously though ..... ive been watching college football long enough to know there is NEVER a sure thing when it comes to traditional rivalries. im not a betting man .... but if i was, i would never bet a dime on any traditional rivalry.

    You saw it here first:

The Beavers will prevail at Autzen.

Their poise and skill will systematically destroy the Ducks as they march up and down the field with workmanlike precision.

Masoli will stand on the side and smile thinking he will be able to come in at the end of the game like he did last night. But, no, not on December 3rd. His smile will becomes tears as he whimpers and watches his season unravel.

Who won last year? Wasn't the Beavers...is NOT going to happen this year either.

You have one guy that can run, our whole team can run. Our Freshman now holds the single season record for freshman RBs in the Pac 10, yours does not.

You guys just came off Washington State, we just were truely tested by a really good Arizona team, and we beat them...did you? No you lost by 5...at home, I know they stayed at the hotel I work at in Eugene and they were really high after they stomped you, they partied all night and left at 7AM the next day.

We are the fans of the Oregon Ducks, the road to Pasadena goes thru Eugene...as was said on our latest school hoodie...welcome to autzen stadium, where good teams come to die.

see you all in two weeks...bring a lunch, we'll be hungry after the game.

I am a realist, but I honestly for some reason think we have this Civil War game.
The brothers need to be on there A game, no stupid mistakes and QB has to step up.
Either way I love to watch them play each other. Its electric.
I'll be at dads drinking and eating and listening to my mom pretend to care everytime she brings in more food.(GOOD WOMAN)

Hey Kaddydicklessman. SAo you say this is the same Beaver team that you played last year. I seem to recall a bunch of hype last year that they were playing without a bunch of guys mainly the R brothers and some guys on D plus Looking over the stats and these links...

    http://www.bustersports.com/blog/pac-10-news/2009/08/20/pac-10-the-brett-favre-awards/

Oh yea the moevo int on the goal line the Blown Fumble by MASOLI AND A FEW OTHER PLAYS Like the 70 yard TD return when the beavs were driving THE Beavers were right in that thing. So I wouldn't stretch your Big time ego to much but minus a bad call by the bad Pac 10 officials and those two TD's from Interceptions That game could have turned out much differently..You are wrong this is not the same Beavers team...

    Oregon Oregon State
    First downs 22 25
    Rushing 12 5
    Passing 9 18
    Penalty 1 2
    3rd Down Efficiency 8-for-15, 53% 8-for-16, 50%
    4th down efficiency 0-for-0, -% 1-for-1, 100%
    Rushes-Yards 51-385 31-89
    Passing Yards 309 374
    Return Yards 190 320
    Completions-Attempts-Int 12-18-0 27-51-2
    Sacks-Yards Lost 3--21 5--38
    Punts 3 4
    Punts-Average 50.7 39.8
    Fumbles Lost 3-0 2-2
    Penalties - Yards 15-129 6-75
    Time of Possession 29:36 30:24

so it appears they get nearly 500 hundred yards on you and you got nearly 700 Big deal the Blown fumble deal and the int's did those beavs in who played with out 4 key players with those guys you can bet you would have been smoked. After watching the UA game last might I can see exactly some of the alignments and giveaways that allowed UA to pretty much throttle UO until they ran out of gas and had some late injuries on D which really helped the Duck's. By the way whats with those fairy wing deals on the uniforms..and Trash those hideous yellow deals yuk... makes you turn off the TV set.

    Hey Dawgmeat

first of all I respect Wahington good job with USC

I just have to say I highly doubt the Beavers are going to shut down the Ducks 63-10 in Autzen Stadium.
Oregon has smashed every opponet except for Purdue this year at home. I know there is an abundance of crackheads in the Northwest. (yes, it's true) But please be realistic, the Ducks are playing virtually the same team from last year in the Civil War and it was 65-38 (something like that) in Corvallis. Jacquiss Rodgers is a stud of a running back and Oregon knows that they are oing to be prepared. it's going to be a blow out in the Ducks favor or a very close game inwich if the Beavers win it will be by maybe 7 pts.

I don't think the Beavers can go to the Holiday bowl if they lose because they went last year, and you cant go two times in a row. If I am correct about that.

Good win OSU but I doubt you pull off the win at Oregon. With the smothering defense they have I see them shutting down Rodgers running ability and thus winning by at least 14 points. Look at the SC game against OSU the Trojans were up by 22 at one point and did what they did at Notre Dame assumed the game was over. It was closer than it should have been but a win is a win. So enjoy the game but I see you guys heading to the Holiday Bowl against Nebraska and if that is the case beat the hell out of them ok?

The recap for this game states "Oregon State is third in the Pac-10 and has already beaten Arizona".

This statement is not true -- Oregon State lost at home to Arizona. How difficult could it be to check the score of previous games?

Well, the sad part is that this was one of the more competitive first halves that the Cougs played this year. Yes, it's all relative. Usually we are down 35 points before we even sniff a score. I saw small glimpses of improved defensive play......in between the 500+ yards given up. How far we have fallen from 3 10win seasons in a row. Current Big Sky coach in over his head in the Pac 10? Lack of talent? Fire Wulff already? Is it still all Doba's fault (the previous coach)? All of the above? Well, don't fire yet. In my humble opinion he deserves another year--but I'm tired of hearing Wulff trash the previous coaching staff for their recruiting mistakes. It's just not classy.

Congrats to the Beavs on a good season and a good program. Riley knows how to get it done. He doesn't always get the 4 star "famous" heralded kids like U$C. But, he knows how to find hidden talent and how to coach it.

Assuming Oregon beats AZ, it'll come down to the civil war for the Rose. It's cool that at least a Northwest team is going to the Rose Bowl.
