No. 11 Oregon slips past Arizona 44-41 in 2 OTs

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)—Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli watched as red-clad Arizona students ringed the sidelines as time ticked down, ready to rush the field.

“I saw it and I actually smirked,” Masoli said. “It was kind of funny. I wasn’t really worried about it.”

The Ducks’ gifted quarterback ruined the celebration in Arizona Stadium and started another one in Eugene.

Masoli tied it with a touchdown pass to Ed Dickson with six seconds left, then won it with a 1-yard run in the second overtime as No. 11 Oregon defeated Arizona 44-41 on Saturday night and took a big step toward the Pac-10 title.

The Ducks (9-2, 7-1 Pac-10) will earn a Pac-10 title and Rose Bowl berth with a victory over No. 20 Oregon State in a winner-take-all Civil War on Dec. 3 in Eugene.

Masoli threw for three scores and ran for three more as the Ducks rallied from a 24-14 deficit early in the fourth quarter.

“Our guys didn’t flinch,” Oregon coach Chip Kelly said.

Nick Foles threw four TD passes for Arizona (6-4, 4-3), which was eliminated from Rose Bowl contention.

“That was a real tough loss, especially for the kids,” said Arizona coach Mike Stoops, whose team lost for the first time at home. “We did really well tonight with getting Oregon out of their comfort zone. They’ve got a very good quarterback, and that is definitely what makes the difference.”

Facing relentless pressure from the Wildcats, Masoli struggled at times, fumbling twice and throwing an interception that led to Arizona’s first score.

But Masoli was there when the Ducks needed him most. He was unstoppable late in the game, then took over in overtime.

After Masoli hit Jeff Maehl for a 4-yard score on Oregon’s first overtime possession, Foles hit Juron Criner with a 3-yard strike to tie it at 38-38.

In the second OT, Oregon forced Arizona to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Alex Zendejas.

A touchdown would win it for Oregon, and Masoli quickly produced it.

He hit Dickson for 22 yards, and three plays later Masoli bulled over from a yard out.

“I was just resolved,” Masoli said. “I’m just really happy with the result and really proud of our guys. They just played their hearts out the whole time.”

Minutes early, Oregon tied it at 31-31 when Masoli hit Dickson in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard score.

That stunning strike came after another minor miracle for the Ducks. Oregon had tied it at 24-24 midway through the final quarter on a 43-yard field goal by Morgan Flint—a line-drive kick that hit the crossbar and bounced through the uprights.

Arizona took a 31-24 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a 71-yard screen pass from Foles to Criner, who outraced the defense to the end zone, fighting off two defenders over the final 10 yards.

Arizona appeared ready to run the clock out on its next possession. But Oregon’s Talmadge Jackson III picked off a pass in the end zone, giving the Ducks one last shot.

“That changed the whole perspective of the game,” Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris said.

The Ducks took over at their own 20 with 3:11 to play. As students began to mass on the sidelines, Masoli guided the Ducks downfield in 15 plays and 3:05, scoring with six ticks to spare.

Masoli completed 7 of 11 passes for 54 yards on the drive and also ran for 13 yards.

“It (upsets) you for the most part because you let opportunities like that slip away,” Arizona free safety Cam Nelson. “It’s hard to know you could have won a game, or you were supposed to win a game, and then you end up losing.”

On a 70-degree night in the desert, Wildcats faithful packed Arizona Stadium for one of the bigger games in school history. But this was a matchup few had circled in September.

The Wildcats were picked to finish eighth in a preseason poll of reporters regularly assigned to the conference. Oregon, meanwhile, seemed adrift after opening with a 19-8 defeat at Boise State—a loss that made national news when tailback LeGarrette Blount punched a Broncos player after the game and was suspended for the season. He dressed Saturday night but did not play.

Oregon had scored at least 40 points in six of seven Pac-10 games, including its last four, and the Ducks looked unstoppable on the game’s opening possession. They marched 74 yards in nine plays, with Masoli snaking 14 yards up the middle to give Oregon a 7-0 lead.

Masoli made it 14-0 with a 9-yard strike to Maehl early in the second quarter.

But the Wildcats cut the deficit in half on a Foles’ first TD pass, a 5-yarder to Criner, who caught three touchdown passes.

Arizona scored 24 straight points before the Ducks awoke and rallied.

“We just have perseverance,” Masoli said. “That’s one of the characteristics of this team. Everybody on our team believed to the end.”

Spoke a little too soon on the next news item, there it is, there she is, there's LGB. At least she kept it to under half a page this time. So Nate Costa went duck hunting, cool, he deserves it. He had a small but vital part in the UA game handling that low snap for the game-tying PAT at 0:06 in regulation.

Here's hoping we see OSU 2009 Pac-10 Champs T-shirts on Craigslist on Dec. 4th "Never worn, still in package" Go Big Green!

    Truth,

You are a funny guy. The Ducks are talking about the Rose Bowl and your getting all excited over the Apple Cup.
It appears you have had a difficult time adjusting to Oregon kicking your backside up and down the field for the past several years. Get use to it BOY because it is going to stay that way for many years to come. Keep buying Nike.
If you like to win then you should learn how to QUACK and it is time to put Duke to sleep. He looks a little tired.

Good point, CT, it's just human nature to honor and respect tradition. It has diminished value as a selling point to recruits in today's instant-everything society, but people in general like to use tradition and historical performance to make the distinction between johnny-come-lately's and established programs. Metz brought up UO benefactor Phil Knight's deep pockets. For many, many years that was a reason UW had the recruiting edge on all the other NW schools: moneyed program in a bigger city & better national exposure. Knight's funding has helped tip the balance towards UO.

You know, given the timing of UO-UA game and the Big Game, it makes me wonder if the Ducks didn't get a bit of a boost upon learning Cal beat Stanford - getting rid of one potential tie-breaker - which helped them get back into it with UA.

It's almost Thursday and no new UO articles. Usually there's at least one or two out by now, still trying to make mileage out of LGB. The lack of such "news" is a good sign.

Besides the Toilet Bowl, anyone have a favorite Civil War game in particular?

I dont see the point in the focus on any team's history beyond their current coach or the last 2 or 3 years, tops. Teams and programs roll over fast and changes coaches, schemes, etc every couple years.

Their is no point talking about anything Belotti or Rich Brooks or even further back. They always say the best thing to have in sports is a short memory.

I was live at the Stanford game but what I really remember is the Arizona game, I did not have confidence in the Ducks going down the stretch other than blind fan luck. Somehow we pulled off that victory. I said we score at least 42 every game and the other team just simply has to score more than that to win. Granted, it took 2 overtimes to get there.

Go Ducks, way too long to wait for the next game, and how did the Beavs get up to 16th in the BCS? We should be wary, they always start slow and finish strong the last couple years.

I loved the fans ready to rush the field on the sidelines, classic Arizona fandom. It is usually a fun place to catch an away Ducks game, the weather is surely better than the Northwest this time of year.

We should see some Blount too with any luck.

    Truth,
Currently the only thing you got going for you is the history. It is over goose you have to let go.
With New-wezil it was, just give us 2-3 more years, the Willingham 2-3 more years and now 2-3 more years again. I hear the same song from the Huskers and Irish. You had a great run and one to be proud of. But like it or not it is the Ducks turn now.
I can stand the Huskies either. But I always was pulling for you in the Bowl games like any other pac-10 team.
    QUACK !
I would leave Duke at home because we saw what Donald did to him.

    Kammeres,
Thanks for the comments. I am very aware of Washingtons past and know my history. Guys like poodle power make me chuckle because they will not let go of yesterday. Just throwing him a bone for some laughs. I would love to see the huskies get back to having a strong team. However, if your a top player you want to be with a winner and best facilities. Right now and thanks to Phil Knight I think Oregon will be the hot bed in the northwest and the Pac-10 for many years to come.
You got to love Phil Knight. QUACK !

Thanks, Dawg, I appreciate your response. Depending on my job prospects I may be using my GI Bill at UA to finish my degree.

METZ, I checked on the cheerleader threads and saw your other posts. I apologize for the crack on education, in retrospect it was uncalled-for. You're a Duck fan living in Tucson, that's two things we have in common, at least after I get back from Iraq. For what it's worth, Lincoln took office in March 1861, UW became a full-fledged school in Nov 1861, Eugene was formally incorporated in 1862, and UO came into being in 1872. On your remark on living in the past, yes, it's a bad thing if you dwell on it to the point of ignoring the present. I will say this: if you're going to tangle with Dawg you'd better pack a lunch, he's a storehouse of knowledge. But, he's a good guy to have in your corner if someone outside the Pac-10 comes to talk smack.

Before long those oily, greasy Beavers will start cropping up on the game preview threads. UO fans need to be ready for them.

    Go Big Green!

Sheesh...take a day off and miss a couple of hundred comments. Biggest thing is totally agree that it's time to put the unholy PAC-10/Big T1e1n union to bed. As the PAC continues to strengthen and the midwest teams continue to mire in mediocrity a more wide open arrangement should be in order. For my money I would love to see Ohio State get their arses handed to them by Cincinnati so we can quit hearing about Ohio State not losing to another in-state school since the Grover Cleveland's second non-consecutive term. I am with whomever (Dawgmeat, perhaps?) suggested that an Oregon vs. SEC runner-up contest would put the PAC's best on stage to either quiet or validate the SEC goons. How about TCU and Boise State in a battle of the unbeaten at-larges, maybe the Fiesta Bowl? Getting throttled by another "non big Six" would be just the thing to give the Idaho spudhoppers a little taste of crow. That would probable leave Georgia Tech and Pitt in a game nobody west of the Alleghenies would care about.

Just some ruminating. Either way, I am glad for one thing: My 86-year-old granfather getr to see the one thing he always hoped for in his lifetime...a Civil War for all the marbles for the winning team. It's a great time to be from the Willamette Valley.

Amen Dawg, a true fan sticks with their team through thick and thin, I've been a Duck fan since 1970.

Quasi-clever comment on President Lincoln; regretfully, it's inaccurate as neither the city of Eugene nor UO nor UW existed when Lincoln first took office. Basic history FAIL. Don't know about others but I used my past to get an education.

Hey guys, off topic but did anyone catch the Steelers game against the Chiefs? Roethlisberger and the backup QB Charlie Batch both were shaken up. Who knows, we might see their 2nd backup QB Dennis Dixon in action next week.
