EVANSTON, Ill. (AP)—A purple mob rushed to the middle of Ryan Field, a home crowd celebrating Northwestern’s 33-31 victory over No. 17 Wisconsin on Saturday.

“I was right in the middle in the thick of things; it got a little rowdy in there. It’s definitely a great feeling having fans rush the field,” Northwestern’s Jordan Mabin said Saturday after his interception in the closing seconds clinched the win.

The Wildcats built a 27-14 halftime lead behind the passing of Mike Kafka to Andrew Brewer and then used late defensive plays from Brian Peters and Mabin to hold off the Badgers.

“It was definitely an emotional day, having your parents walk out on the field with you. But we were here to win the game,” said Brewer, a senior and converted quarterback who finished with six catches for 102 yards.

Northwestern (8-4, 5-3 Big Ten) improved its postseason positioning with its third straight victory and will get a chance to win the school’s first bowl game since the 1949 Rose Bowl.

Wisconsin (8-3, 5-3) still has one more game to play at Hawaii. The Badgers couldn’t get in position Saturday for a game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter, even though they had ample opportunities.

“When we took the ball with about four minutes left, I felt pretty comfortable about being able to drive the ball down and if not score (a touchdown), put ourselves in field goal range,” coach Bret Bielema said.

“Even taking the field the last time with 42 seconds left, the way these guys have battled through and finished ballgames, I felt pretty good.”

Wisconsin’s David Gilreath returned a punt 68 yards for a third-quarter TD to get the Badgers (8-3, 5-3) back in the game.

Scott Tolzien found Garrett Graham wide open in the back of the end zone for a 13-yard pass with 10:45 to go, pulling the Badgers within 33-31 and setting the stage for a wild finish.

Wisconsin then got the ball back three more times, but had turnovers on two of the possessions.

The Badgers got the ball with eight minutes to go but had to punt. They stopped the Wildcats and, after a holding penalty, had possession again at their 34 with 3:43 to go. But Wisconsin’s John Clay fumbled and Peters recovered at the 41 with 1:44 left.

“I was trying to fight and get the first down. I let loose of the ball. I bumped into one of my guys and I dropped it,” said Clay, the Big Ten’s leading rusher who finished with 100 yards on 23 carries.

Northwestern had to punt again, and the Badgers got the ball back at their 21 with 42 seconds to go, before Mabin sealed the victory with his interception of a long pass from Tolzien intended for Isaac Anderson.

“I looked up and saw the ball coming and I’m like, `Oh, wow, it’s here.’ I had to go up and get it. It’s hard to explain that feeling,” Mabin said.

“If I were to do it again, I probably would have thrown it underneath,” Tolzien said. “Come crunch time we didn’t get it done.”

Tolzien completed 19 of 30 passes for 235 yards and two TD passes to Graham. Kafka had his fifth 300-yard passing game of the season, going 26 of 40 for 326 yards.

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald—who said he didn’t like fans rushing the field because of the injury risk—made a pitch for Kafka, his senior quarterback, to be the offensive MVP of the Big Ten.

The Wildcats are playing their best football at the end of the season and had beaten Iowa and Illinois the previous two weeks.

“I would say so,” Fitzgerald said. “3-0 in November is a statement of where our program is now.”

The Wildcats used trickery to build the halftime lead. Kafka lateraled to leading receiver Zeke Markshausen, who then passed to a wide open Sidney Stewart. Stewart caught the ball at the 6 and then went to the end zone to complete the 38-yard play and cap a three-play, 80-yard drive—Northwestern’s second TD in a span of 2:21.

Northwestern added a 38-yard field goal by Stefan Demos with 34 seconds to go after Wisconsin stopped the Wildcats on third-and-1 at the 20. Demos finished with four field goals.

Northwestern had gone up 17-14 when Brewer fully extended to catch Kafka’s third-down pass in the end zone. His highlight reel reception was upheld by video review and set up by Stephen Simmons’ 64-yard kickoff return.

Cullen P - I'm a patient guy, so I'll give you one more chance to put your enormous ego in your pocket. I've extended my "proverbial" hand for a truce for the second time. It's obvious I have gotten to you which makes me laugh, but we can all laugh like adults if you choose to. I have no problem with that.

No officer complaints in 3 years.

Oh man, law enforcement...Lord help us all. So, how many people have you railroaded since you've become an officer of the law? With your attitude, I'm sure that a routine traffic stop for your average law abiding citizen becomes an absolute nightmare. How many night sticks have you crammed into the side of someone for going 5 MPH over the speed limit? Here's a better question, how many people have you pulled over because they had Packer/Badger stickers/license plate holders affixed to their vehicles?

Stop fooling yourself regarding your homophobia. If you insist on calling the Packers the "Fudge" Packers, you're homophobic in some kind of way. Here's your bonus question Dan G. On Turkey day, how long will it take before you call the Packers the "Fudge" Packers when they're playing the Lions? Which family member will give you the proverbial high five once this is said?

"you are a very angry young man."

Happily married going on 4 years. Two kids.

"established the fact that you're homophobic and a gay basher."

    Not at all.

"when was the last time you were arrested for battery or that of domestic battery? I'm pretty sure that you've been in your fair share of drunken brawls in a bar or have come home and beat your wife/girlfriend after your teams have lost."

Strike 3. With that kind of record I probably wouldn't be in law enforcement. Think about it.

You failed miserably in your last post. Like any fan, I look to rile up the opponent. Most people can take it which makes it FUN, some take it personally. I'll give you another chance to redeem yourself, up to you.

Dan G, I guess you need a lesson in English as well. I simply mistakenly substituted the word conscious for conscience (small error on my part, and hardly a butchering of a word). I might as well break it to you, there are two spellings for this word, like there are multiple spellings for their, there, and they're. I'm surprised that you didn't spot my error earlier, regarding using "one" instead of "won". Try not to turn this into an intellectual battle, since you're already getting thrashed in that department.

The fact that you point out something as miniscule as my using the alternate spelling of that word (which you weren't aware there was one), tells me that my assessment of you as a human being was dead on. I'll continue to play Freud, since you obviously are a very angry young man. You did use the word "Fudge" Packers earlier, so we've already established the fact that you're homophobic and a gay basher. Let me ask you this Dan G, when was the last time you were arrested for battery or that of domestic battery? I'm pretty sure that you've been in your fair share of drunken brawls in a bar or have come home and beat your wife/girlfriend after your teams have lost. What's the longest you've been in jail for? Were you in a local jail, or did you spend some time in the state penitentiary?

I'll be interested to hear (by the way, this is a word with another spelling/just thought I would point that out) your response. Hopefully we'll be able to get you some help, once we determine how bad your anger management problem is.

My favorite part: "you're clearly someone who operates without a conscious."

    I believe you meant "conscience."

I don't know what's worse, the fact you are 38 and can't spell, the fact you are taking this personally, or the fact that you are a homer calling me a hypocrite.

    I mean wow......

You have failed. You are a hypocrite and are simply "calling the kettle black." All your assumptions are wrong and you are embarrassing yourself. You are telling me Packers/Bears fans don't hope the Vikings or any other divisional teams lose every week?? Completely lying to yourself.

The fact the you respond further proves your ignorance, and hypocrisy. Stop pretending bud.

Bottom line: Vikings are 9-1 with Favre, and rolling. Learn to love it.

Dan G, your the epitome of what is considered a bad debater/and a horrible fan. You argue both sides of the coin when it fits your cause. It comes down to this, how pathetic do you have to be to go onto a Badger/Northwestern blog on the day that your team gets beat 12-0, and barely eeks its way into a bowl game? The funny thing about Vikings/Gopher fans is they are more consumed about the Packers/Badgers losing than they are about their own teams winning.

Let me paint the picture of you with very broad strokes. For all intents and purposes, you're the loud obnoxious @#$% in the bar (ages 22-25) that likes to annoy the hell out of the opposing teams fans, even when the opposing fan is trying so very hard to ignore you. For some reason you take on this perverse pleasure in life. I, on the other hand will DEFEND my teams/school until the end, without stooping to your level, by going onto a Vikings/Gophers blog and resorting to bullying tactics. I understand why you do this though, as it is based on insecurity and jealousy, and the fact that you were probably just a total horror story as a kid (Bullying mentality). This is the last time I'm responding to you, as you're clearly someone who operates without a conscious.

"You on the other hand seem to pick and choose when history is important (hence you're a hypocrite)."

That's just untrue. You pretty much recylced everything I said, but somehow I'm a hypocrite and you aren't. Gopher football = better HISTORY then Wisconsin. Current Gophers? Dazed and confused. Gopher basketball is better right now, hockey is even. Vikings are obviously better now (reference 2009 NFC North Standings), Packers won most of their championships with 8 or so teams in the league.

With regards to history, you probably remember 1 super bowl victory, so go ahead and hang your hat on it. The Vikings have a legit shot this year and look pretty much unstoppable. This could be a better team then 1998.

    38-26, 30-23, 9-1

Chew on those figures for a while.

Dan G. You want to point out that Minnesota Football has 6 National championships, but hasn't done a thing since 1960. They haven't done anything since then. Let's see, maybe you can point out the fact that Lou resurrected their program for the briefest of time, then he left, and there went any kind of winning tradition. Your football team is outright disaster as it pertains to helping out the Big-10 in winning their bowl games. Who are they going to lose to this year? To be honest, I hope they win, but I don't see it happening. It's the only time I will be rooting for you guys, but I totally understand your team's short comings. No Eric Decker virtually gives you no hope.

The +3 points was a gift, as we totally dominated you in that game. Frankly it doesn't matter though, as we've beat you 13 out of the last 15. We're already going to be a prohibitive favorite going into next year. Regarding hockey it was a split. Basketball wise, we melted down in the last couple of minutes in Madison last year. Granted you swept us in basketball, but then you pulled a typical Golden Gopher move in the NCAA by losing in the 1st round. You couldn't even ride the success of Tubby's dominance in the first round when coaching at Tulsa/Georgia/Kentucky. Like I said, the Big-10 can't depend on you in football or basketball. What gives?

Regarding the history thing, I never said that I didn't live in the past. You on the other hand seem to pick and choose when history is important (hence you're a hypocrite). I relish the past as it pertains to the Packers. Our history dominates the hell out of that regarding the Vikings. You could win back to back Super Bowls, and it wouldn't change the fact that the Packers have a much richer history across the board. Regarding the Gophers having a richer history in football, I will concede that, but it doesn't even compare to that of the Packers dominance in the history department over that of the Vikings.

DanB, you have me confused with someone else.

Dan G, Minnesota hasn't made a Rose Bowl since 1962. That's also the last year they won the Big Ten Title... Nice little shut out at Iowa on Saturday. Minnesota's been outscored 67-0 against Iowa the last two years and has lost three straight. At least Wisconsin put up some points against the Hawkeyes the last few years...

Still, it's always nice to go into the postseason at .500. Best of luck against whatever MAC team you draw...

Oh little Cullen P, typical homer-minded individual.

6-0 is Gopher championships (football) compared to Wisconsin. I don't live in the past, but you obviously do: '"Even by chance, if you win the Super Bowl this year, you will only have one trophy in the case. Get a hold of me when you win a 11 more."

This is why I brought up 6-0, but then followed it with "This is 2009 and Wisconsin is better (by 3 points) so have it. We'll get ya in basketball (again) this season. Hockey is a split so far."

Nice of you to completely avoid this point. I simply matched you in the historical context and gave you some 2009 info. bozo.

"Like I said, if for some very ODD reason the Vikings win it all this year, you will have to live with that perverse irony regarding why your Vikings won it all."

    And so will you.

Dan G, I almost forgot to point out something very important regarding your last post. You're beyond being a hypocrite. You want to point out the bizarre Minnesota 6 & Wisconsin goose egg (which doesn't even make sense), yet in the next instance you tell me that I shouldn't live in the past. Which is it? You rely on some stat, which isn't even a fact, then you tell me to stop living in the past. Like I said, you continue to put yourself deeper into a whole with every sentence you write. I'm sure there are some decent community colleges that you can go to into Minnesota, or you can attend that barber college in Minneapolis/ St. Paul for that 4 year degree. I would suggest moving out of state, if you want to hang with the big boys when it comes to blogging. You seem to be in desperate straits as it pertains to many areas in life.

Dan G, there are bozo Minnesota fans, and then there is you. Even though Minnesota fans lack certain chromosomes when it comes to talking sports, you seem to be operating on empty. By all accounts you dig a deeper whole with every sentence you write. What is this stupid championship tracker that you're talking about 6-0? That absolutely makes no sense. Are you suggesting that U.W has never one an NCAA Championship in any sport? If so, you better check your facts. You're right that U.W has never won a national championship in football, but the Rose Bowl is a BCS bowl game. When was the last time Minnesota played in any New Years Day bowl game? Hmmmm, like forever.

Dan G, I understand your frustration. You live in a second rate state as it pertains to sports teams. The only reason the Vikings have come out on top of Green Bay this year is because of the Favre/Longwell/Bevell/Childress factor. I have no problem admitting that at all. People in Minnesota know that they have to tap into the riches that is Wisconsin athletics, whether that be intercollegiate athletics or that on a professional level. Like I said, if for some very ODD reason the Vikings win it all this year, you will have to live with that perverse irony regarding why your Vikings won it all. Hell, they might as well put an asterisk next to that Super Bowl win. Not that I'm anointing the Vikings as Super Bowl champs, because history is clearly working against you.

Championship Tracker: Gophers 6 Wisconsin 0. Goose egg is still a goose egg. Rose Bowl is not a chamionship as much as you'd like it to be. This is 2009 and Wisconsin is better (by 3 points) so have it. We'll get ya in basketball (again) this season. Hockey is a split so far.

Vikings 2-0 vs. Fudge in 2009.

Edge: Minnesota in 2009. No reason to live in the past sconnie fans. You can't get back to it.

    VIKES.

While it's true 1949 was the last year in which Northwestern won a bowl game, they've gone to six bowl games - including the Rose Bowl - since 1995, contrary to what this statement implies.

Dan G, you need some serious help. Even by chance, if you win the Super Bowl this year, you will only have one trophy in the case. Get a hold of me when you win a 11 more. Not to mention the fact that you also play in the biggest dump in all of football or maybe any stadium/arena in the sports world. I love it that there is still that threat of the Vikings moving to L.A, since there still has been no stadium proposal as of yet. Please, one can't even compare the two franchises, as Green Bay wins in a landslide. Remember, if you win the Super Bowl, that trophy is named for the greatest football coach of all time. No, the trophy is not named after Bud Grant.

When was your LAST national title Minnesota? When was your LAST Rose Bowl appearance? For that matter, when was the last time you beat Wisconsin? Minnesota is 0 for 6 against Wisconsin.

    Let's recap, shall we?
    2004 Minnesota 14, Wisconsin 38
    2005 Wisconsin 38, Minnesota 34
    2006 Minnesota 12, Wisconsin 48
    2007 Wisconsin 41, Minnesota 34
    2008 Minnesota 35, Wisconsin 32
    2009 Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 28

Last win at Camp Randall for Minnesota: 1994. The dominance in the late eighties and early 90's has LONG since vanished. Maybe Minnesota could hire Glen Mason back...
