Clark leads No. 13 Penn St. past Mich. St., 42-14

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP)—It didn’t take long for Penn State to start lobbying for a BCS bid.

Daryll Clark passed for 310 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as the No. 13 Nittany Lions wrapped up their regular season with a 42-14 victory against Michigan State on Saturday.

Clark set a school record with his 23rd TD passes this season and set the career record with 42. He also moved to the front of a line of folks in Nittany Lion Nation hoping for an at-large slot in the lucrative Bowl Championship Series.

“Yes we do,” Clark said when asked if Penn State (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten) deserved a BCS slot.

Penn State may be a long shot. Clark noted the Nittany Lions have lost twice — to BCS automatic qualifier Ohio State and fellow at-large hopeful Iowa—but says his team deserves credit for bouncing back to finish the season strong.

Coach Joe Paterno also made his team’s case, in good-natured fashion.

“What do you want me to say?,” Paterno asked reporters outside Spartan Stadium. “Pick us. Maybe I could get on the phone and call somebody and say, ‘you owe me one,’ or ‘you might find a horse’s head in your bed’.”

Michigan State (6-6, 4-4) also is bowl-bound and may have a long wait to figure out the exact bid. But the Spartans were stinging after getting routed by Penn State in Saturday’s second half. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed,” said Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins, who threw for 155 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. “We worked very hard and expected to come out and play well. In the second half, we didn’t do that.”

The Spartans took a step back with their record this season after winning nine games in 2008.

“Right now what we have to do is regroup and understand that we are going to have the opportunity to go play in a bowl game, which is a positive,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said.

Evan Royster gained 114 yards on 13 carries for Penn State. Graham Zug and Andrew Quarless each caught two TD passes.

The Land Grant Trophy—a 4-foot-tall, 50-pound hunk of wood adorned with a Nittany Lion, Spartan and other images—stays with Penn State.

Penn State also has back-to-back seasons of at least 10 wins for the first time since the early 1990s, but the Nittany Lions lost any chance to share the Big Ten championship before kickoff. Ohio State claimed the crown outright by beating Michigan earlier in the day.

The Nittany Lions have a shot at an at-large BCS bid, but Iowa—which beat Penn State earlier this season—finished with an identical 10-2 record. Only two teams from any conference can play in the BCS.

Orange Bowl representatives were at Saturday’s game. Penn State could be a prime candidate for the Capital One Bowl or the Outback Bowl if it gets left out of the BCS.

Penn State grabbed a 14-7 lead just over a minute into the half with the help of a trick play. Wide receiver Curtis Drake took a handoff and rolled right, throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Quarless in the back of the end zone.

It capped a 55-yard, three-play drive aided by a roughing the passer penalty.

Penn State increased its lead to 21-7 midway through the third quarter. Clark rolled to his right, planted and threw back across the field to the left sideline—finding Joe Suhey all alone for a 30-yard TD pass.

Penn State’s Nick Sukay intercepted Cousins’ pass on the next series, setting up the Nittany Lions at the Michigan State 32. Clark fired a TD pass to Zug on the very next play, giving Penn State a 28-7 lead with 5:22 left in the third.

#63, aka "Oprah": You're a giant moron! You're a giant moron! You're all giant morons!

What an educated arguement. Learn the difference between FSU and UF, then talk about morons

And in that FSU/PSU bowl game a few years ago, FSU was supposed to lose by 14pts, but yet somehow took Penn St to multiple overtimes.... hmmm sucks when you have to play a real football team, huh Penn State fans?

GIANT MORONS: j s If you weren't so stupid you'd almost be worth a reply. The truth (LOL) and it hurts-you wouldn't know truth if it bit you in your ignorant, inbred Reb a$$! Jennifer Tyler-stupid is as stupid does. I don't see your name in any college football record books. So I guess your dumb-a$$ opinion is as screwed-up as the tampon you have in sideways. richard w, the uniforms are THE coolest in college football, the colors are blue and white, and you are a giant moron. Nootka R, if you can handle it, go to PSU's football web site and look under "roster." It makes your idiot statement about half-a$$ clown players from Florida look ridiculous. 'Bama will kick Florida's A$$e$ so hard in the SEC title game that Florida will wear their A$$ for a hat! Too bad they don't have any PA players, they'd be good otherwise. Kevin D, your 15 minutes were up 20 minutes ago, and who cares? What a loser! Well, that about wraps it up. Bye, bye, PSU hating morons!

If Penn State gets into the BCS that will be awful. They will get in instead of Iowa, are you joking me? Penn State fans are convinatley are forgetting that Iowa didn't have Stanzi or the rb for most of the northwestern game and all of the Ohio State. Yes I realize the backup played really well at OSU but still.

Penn State lost to Iowa, and prettymuch got pushed around. They also lost to Ohio State at home, by a convincing margin.

There are 40 teams in college football that would have the same exact or better record as Penn State with that schedule.

Penn State fans reply; That loss was early in the season, we are a different team now
Answer: 1. You just got dominated by Ohio State three weeks ago at home, whom Iowa took to overtime on the road with the backup qb.
    2. Do you think its possible that Iowa is also a better team now, and has improved just as much as Penn State?
    3. Why the hell should early season losses not matter at all??

PS What's in your wallet Penn State fans??? have fun in the Capital One Bowl. Orlando's a great place, I got tickets to the game if you want them!!

I love how people jump all over the out of conference schedule Penn State has. But I can see when you schedule cupcakes like Charelston southern, FIU, and Troy I mean people should start to rip on your out of conference schedule. Oh wait those were FLORIDA's cupcakes?

Bamma did the same thing too. but at least they had the balls to schedule Virginia Tech early so kudos to them. Even if they backed out of playing Penn State the last decade...

Everyone's schedule has easy little teams on it. It's how College football works.

And Dennis don't injure yourself in your victory dance finding out that the Big Ten has 11 teams. Anyone who graduated 1st grade can count. AND IT"S ON THE FREAKING LOGO! You're not that smart....

herbert e - did u really take a good look at Texas schedule? yeah - most of those teams are sub 500 this year... No wonder why you will get left out of the BSC game.

And if it weren't for Richard Nixon 30+ years ago, Texas would have 1 less National Championship...

We would really benefit from a National Tournament. The South and the West have an advantage because most BOWL games are played in their regions which gives them a home field advantage. As good as Florida and Florida State are, I can't imagine them coming up to the North on a BAD Autumn evening and playing a game in the rain and wind with temperatures in the 40's and being EXCITED about it. I can't recall too many SEC teams or ACC teams playing west of the Mississippi against the top teams on the road. No BCS teams will even schedule a home and home with Boise State!
I would love to see the teams play regional championships for quarter finals: then semi-finals AND finally a champion. First rule would be only one representative per conference. If you can't win your conference, the bowl games could pick from the best of the rest.
    SOUTH EAST REGIONAL:
ACC VS. SEC winner plays the North East winner.
    NORTH EAST REGIONAL
Big East Champ hosts the winner of top independent vs. conference USA
Big Ten winner hosts the winner of the MAC conference
    MIDWEST REGIONAL
Big 12 / MWC vs. Sunbelt
    WEST REGIONAL
    WAC vs. PAC 10
The region playoffs would be the quarter finals:
Two regional bowl games could be the semi-finals
Then a championship game the following Monday night!

Since the ACC, SEC, and BIG 12 have money making championships, those conferences could keep their deals and make money.
Since the Big East and Big 10 would be taking a chance to play into the regional finals, those conferences would be awarded home games or regional championship semi final host site preference! Small conferences and top independent would benefit from having a chance instead of being VOTED out. Pre-conference match ups would not have to be avoided because out of conference wins and losses would not mean as much since you must win your conference to be in the national championship playoffs.
Before the season begins, top conferences could play challenges to earn byes and not host smaller conferences in the future. Example MWC would play WAC and PAC 10 would play Big 12. ACC vs SEC and Big 10 vs. Big East

Dude I'm a Buckeye, and I'm just sticking up for my big 10 brethren. Joepa is a class act, so is Bowden, who will probably have some of his wins vacated. Also who won that game Florida St. vs Penn St a couple years back.... that's right. Put that in your pipe and smoke it assclown.

Nootka R - seriously, do u have any idea what u are talking about? Tell me how many players from Florida are on Penn State's Roster? As for championships... The have 2 National Championships and have been undefeated 5 times in the Joe Paterno era. How many coach's can say that. oh - there's that all time win record that keeps on climbing too.

BSC - Penn State shouldn't get the bid. I think TCU & Boise St. should. But it's all about money and putting people in the seats. Penn State travels better then most college teams. If they get the Orange Bowl bid you can bet there wont be a empty seat. And let's face it... That's what the people at the BCS Want.

As for Bowden, I think he's a heck of a coach. And i hope he can stay with the program and bring thm back.. It was only a few years ago that everyone said Joe Pa lost the game and people wanted him out. Now look at the program. 2 Big Ten Championships and 3 10+ win seasons over the past 5 years.

Please - before u run your mouth, check the facts!

Shane B you have no class. If the Big 10 was a real conference FSU could rack up those easy conference wins and titles. Since we play real football in the south, and your classy buddy comes and recruits out of my backyard (Miami, FL), I don't even know how you can call yourselves "Penn State". All your football players are out of Florida! Bobby has always been class. How many championships does PSU have? Thanks. And why the hell would they even think they could go to a BCS game? Iowa should take the other Big 10 slot. Penn State= overrated football at it's most boring.

This comment has no reflection on how Penn St plays,.......but,.....Penn St has got to have the blandest looking uniforms in college football !!....does the school, REALLY have to fork over good money for those bed sheets ???....they remind me of my high school football teams uniform back in the 60's !! You could watch Penn St games on black and white TV,...and not notice a difference !!....Just curious,...what are Penn States colors ????......WHITE & WHITE ??....add even a little bit of color to those bed sheets !!

Iowa is NOT a BCS worthy team. It has lost 2 of its last three. Watching Iowa is like watching paint dry. Boise is the logical choice but it is not part of the bsc mafia so it probably will get the shaft two years running. Penn ST vs Boise could be an interesting match up.
