Nebraska beats K-State 17-3, clinches Big 12 North

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)—A month ago, in the wake of back-to-back home losses, Nebraska’s season looked to be going south.

Now the Huskers will be happily heading south to the Big 12 championship game in Arlington, Texas, after Saturday night’s 17-3 victory over Kansas State.

The Huskers (8-3, 5-2) clinched the North Division with their fourth straight win and will play South champion Texas on Dec. 5 for the conference title and a BCS bowl bid.

“We’ve steadily improved and we’ve hung together,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. “We were in a tough spot after the Iowa State game, and everybody wanted to write us off. There’s too much character in the locker room.”

Nebraska will go to the Big 12 title game for the first time since 2006 and fifth time in the league’s 14 years. First, though, the Huskers travel to Colorado to finish the regular season Friday.

“There’s not going to be any patting ourselves on the back,” Pelini said. “That’s for another time. We enjoy this win tonight and then get back to work.”

Roy Helu Jr. ran 26 times for 95 yards and a touchdown and went over 1,000 yards for the season, and Zac Lee completed 13 of 19 passes for 166 yards and a score. Nebraska’s defense did the rest, holding Kansas State scoreless after the game’s opening series.

The Wildcats (6-6, 4-4), who would have won the North with a win, ended their season with losses in three of their last four games. Because two of their wins were against lower-division teams, they needed to beat Nebraska to become eligible for a bowl game.

“We made some mistakes that cost a very fine opportunity for our program, our players and our seniors,” said K-State coach Bill Snyder, who came out of a three-year retirement to return to the Wildcats’ sideline. “I was saddened that we couldn’t deliver on that opportunity, but I was proud of our football team for putting themselves in the position they were in this evening.”

Nebraska rebounded to win the division after losing two of its first three games in Big 12 play. Back-to-back home losses to Texas Tech and Iowa State started a stretch of four games in which the Huskers scored a total of four offensive touchdowns.

But the Huskers tweaked their offense, installing the power-I formation and using less of the spread. They also overcame a quarterback controversy that saw freshman Cody Green start two games before Lee regained control of the job two weeks ago.

“We’re a true team. We’re together, and we’re with the process,” Lee said. “We know what we have to do, and we don’t care what it is as long as we win.”

Helu, who has 1,057 yards despite missing lots of time because of a shoulder problem in October, gave the Huskers a two-touchdown lead early in the third quarter with his 14-yard run.

“We knew we couldn’t let them hang around and be within one touchdown of us,” center Jacob Hickman said. “We knew the best way was to come out after half and just score. We ran the ball a little, passed the ball a little and got it in there.”

Big 12 rushing leader Daniel Thomas ran 19 times for 99 yards for Kansas State, and Grant Gregory was 11 of 31 for 126 yards. But the Wildcats failed to score a touchdown for the second straight game despite their offense spending most of the second half on Nebraska’s side of the 50.

Three scoring opportunities were lost when Keithen Valentine fumbled at the Nebraska 1 and Josh Cherry missed field goals of 51 and 32 yards.

“In the Big 12 you have to score touchdowns to win games,” said kick return phenom Brandon Banks, who was held mostly in check. “We left a lot of points on the field.”

The Wildcats, trailing by two touchdowns, drove to the Nebraska 25 in the last 4 minutes, but Ndamukong Suh and Barry Turner teamed up to sack Gregory and the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs when Gregory led Banks too much on a ball thrown toward the end zone.

The Huskers took over with 3:41 left and were able to run out the clock after Lee sneaked for a first down on fourth-and-1 from his own 36.

“We just went in there and said we’re going to get this. We’re going to end this game right here and go to Dallas,” Hickman said.

Kansas State’s only points came on the game’s opening series, when Cherry kicked a 44-yard field goal.

Nebraska settled for Alex Henery’s 34-yard field goal after Lee overthrew Mike McNeill in the corner of the end zone on the Huskers’ opening possession.

Lee hooked up with McNeill the next time the Huskers had the ball to put Nebraska up 10-3. McNeill slipped open and snagged the high pass over the middle for a 17-yard touchdown.

“We’re definitely happy with the situation we’re in,” Suh said. “We accomplished our main goal, getting to Dallas. But if we want to dominate the North, we have to go out to Colorado and take care of business.”

Ya for some reason the ranking system doesnt like us. We are on a 4 game win streak including a win over a ranked Oklahoma and we are only in the USA and Harris poll? Iowa loses 2 straight one against a 500 team and beats a @#$%y minnesota team at home and they are being considered for a BCS bowl and only drop 9 spots? I know our offense isnt that good, but that shouldnt keep us that far down and out of some of the polls. sure the north is down this year, but so is the whole big ten and for some reason iowa stays up there. i guess the isu game really screwed us.

Good job Big Red. We may never see the dominant power teams of the Osborne era, but Pellini has the Huskers going in the right direction. Good to see Nebraskaa go back to the staple of a power running game and a stout "D". Suh is a player. If this kid played in the SEC he might even be touted for the Heisman he is that good! Would really be nice to see Nebraska go to the Big 12 title game and shock the world! Anything is possible. Remember 96 when the Huskers were heavy favorites against a Texas team with a little known TB named Priest? or a freshman fullback named Ricky Williams? It can happen.

I see Juli, I did misunderstand your point and I would say it is accurate. We could very easily be a one loss team right now. What about next year's schedule? Do you think we can be a BCS bowl team next year? Schedule looks favorable and I think Texas is going to have a BIG dropoff, not to the extent of OUthis year, but four losses in regular season, perhaps.

Nathan, you misunderstood, I meant that there was nobody on the Huskers schedule this year that they were not capable of beating. The Huskers were capablbe of going 11-0 up to this point with that defense. That being said they were also capable of being 5-6 at this point with that offense.

But I love some of the new wrinkles that the Huskers have thrown out there in the past couple of games, it has a bit of the old Big Red flavor to it and it seems to be working.

It seems the biggest difference in the past few weeks is that Pelini is gearing his offense more toward a grind it out smash mouth style and wearing opponents down. I think had they leaned more in this direction earlier in the season they would have beat Va. Tech and Texas Tech.

As far as rankings I think it is all media perception. Even when Nebraska was a premier program year in and year out they were always slighted in the rankings. Sometimes Nebraska would win a game and would fall in the polls. I think all the media coverage about how bad Neb has been over the past 5 year and the focust on how bad their offense has been in the red zone this year gets a lot of air time. That sticks in voters heads. Stanford is a feel good story and let's be honest, Stanford is a pretty good team. Football is not like it was 25 years ago or even 10 years ago where there was huge separation among top 25 teams. You typically have your top 3-4 and all the rest of the top 40 are all pretty darn competitive with one another.

Raise your hand if you ever thought you would see TCU, Boise, and Cinci in the top 6 at the same time, talk about how times have changed. And remember OU and USC were ranked No. 3 and 4 at the beginning of the season and both have a combined 8 losses and both have embarassing losses getting dominated by opponents.

Rankings truly nowdays mean very, very little. It used to mean something to say you went to a bowl game and it used to mean something to say you finished ranked in the top 25. But there are many teams that are not ranked that probably could beat a top 10 team.

I could not be more happier with Neb season, should they have beat ISU and Va. Tech, heck yeah, but I think most people had an expectation that at this point the Huskers would be 9-2 and win the North Div. Well they are 8-3 and have won their division, they are right on track and I really believe they can pull the stinker upset of Texas. I just think we are due for a little Husker magic.

How is Stanford still ahead of Nebraska in the AP Poll? Their 4 losses: Wake Forest, Oregon State, Arizona, California. Wake Forest is terrible (offset Iowa State), Cal and Oregon State are pretty good, but Cal never shows up against decent teams, Arizona, not good. So we can say VTech a little better than Oregon State, TTech a little wors than Cal. Arizona.. Oh yeah we haven't lost four games! Can someone explain this?

Juli, although I am a Husker fan, and appreciate your optimism, I am not so sure about beating anyone in the country. Trust me, I would like to think that as I am sure most Husker fans would, but I don't think it is rerality. Yes, we have an outstanding defense. Pelini and his staff have been able to get these guys to buy into their philosophy and have these young men flying around. It is amazing to see how far we have come from the Cosgrove, beef em up slow em down defense. Our special teams have been very consistent and above average in the kicking game. Our return game needs work. Our kickoff return seems very inconsistent. I know we have made a few plays, but also have made a few not so good plays. On the other side of the ball, I get the feeling that we don't know who we are. Fullback or no? Can we thorw to any wideouts other than Niles Paul? What is with all the bootlegs? I think that sometimes you can almost detect what play is coming next just by the formation. Speaking of which, why use no fullback when we were trying to run out the clock? We essentially had nine guys on the line. Just some questions, would love to get some good feedback if anybody has some. Good win Nebraska, glad to see you back in Big 12 title game. Please, please destroy the buffaloes, cannot stand them, most hated team by me. As always, GO BIG RED!

Hai, rankings have to do with the perception the media generates. Nebraska has one of the top 5 defenses in the country but the media instead focuses on the struggles of the offense.

Nebraska is 3 points away from being 10-1 and ranked No. 7 or 8 so you would think they would be in the top 20 in both polls at 8-3.

Pelini has really done an amazing job, when you look back he has gone 14-4 in the past 18 games and was within 3 points of going 16-2 over the past 18 games, that is pretty impressive realitive to where the Huskers were recently. There was not a single team the Huskers could not beat.

If the Huskers beat Colorado and Texas then I would imagine at 10-3 you would see them ranked around No. 11 or 12. It would be so nice to see Nebraska get a big time win against Texas that would really solidify the turn around that Pelini has orchestrated and get the Huskers a bit of the national respect back that they once enjoyed.

Well at least we now have all the Kansas, KSU, and Mizzou bloggers off our site! Now it seems as though all the hate has turned to all Texas fans. Well if some of you Texas fans wanna hate on the Big Red you must be concerned somewhat huh?. You all need to remember that 3 yrs ago Nebraska football was at its worst. People kept saying that we will never be good and never win a NC. Well last year we were co-north champs. This year we win the North outright and will play in the Big 12 showdown. Ya the North was not too good this year, but we are improving each year. Dont forget we are 5 pts away from being 10-1. Dam right I will cheer on the Huskers Dec.5, but I'm not sure our offense can score enough pts to pull out a victory. I do however think it will be closer than some of these @#$% talking horns fans think. You will see 2 great defenses in this game. And if the Longhorns do pull out the victory, you better believe I will be rooting for a Big 12 National Champion and Heisman winner! Maybe Suh?????? GO BIG RED!!!!!!

Alabama, Florida and Texas all have stronger schedules than TCU....

How would you like to have to play the #1 team in the country for your conference title?

SEC has 3 National Championships in a row. Don't give me that SEC is overrated BS.

Ok TCU has beat 3 ranked teams . Yes they are ranked currently. Texas has beat one , Alabama 2 and Florida 1 . They are #4 in both def and off. They had 3 close games one was at clemson in a driving rain storm and one was in a blizzard in Colorado ie game time temps were below 20 degrees. They have blown out everyone else . They beat the same team this weekend that texas beat eary in the season and tcu scored 4 more points than texas did on wyoming. tcu was pulling starters in the 3rd. Oh and yes tcu has played 1 div 2 school how many has florida and alabama played . These frogs are real . Now if you want history they have that too. tcu has won 2 nc,s DEAL WITH IT! TCU AND TEXAS ARE THE 2 BEST TEAMS . SEC NOT SO SO GOOD

64 - Tony C - All kidding aside, Neb is not in TX's class yet. Should be a close game for about a half. I see a
2-3 touchdown win for TX. I would like to see you guys play TCU. Any way to play them after your conference championship game and right before the NC game?

Yoy talking about Ole Miss, I would hate to have to play those guys again. Les Miles looked lose in the final seconds of their game with Ole Miss Sat.

although I live in SE Missouri, I've been a huge Nebraska fan since the late 70s and yes, I've been called a traitor many times. I'm real pleased to see the Nebraska football program beginning to come back around. there's obviously much more work to do to regain their prominence in the national spotlight but as any real footbal fan knows, it just takes time. hiring Osbourne as AD was a huge step forwards. after he retired, the Pederson and Callahan years were a disaster. they completely strayed away from what made Nebraska so successful in a failed effort to change into a pro style scheme. I'm so glad those days are gone. it's not to say that it doesn't work for some teams but don't take a formula that works for you and fix it if it isn't broke. we all know that smashmouth football can be susccessful against a prolific passing game. at the same time, I realize having a good quarterback and receivers is an essential part of any offense. Nebraska has lost some big games in the past for not having that in their arsenal. one still can't deny though what happened to Florida in the Fiesta bowl. I would say that Texas is the better team and they will be tough for sure but at least we're headed in the right direction. Congrats to both teams and here's to great Big 12 championship game.

Congratulations to Nebraska from Deep in The Heart of Texas. All programs have their ups and downs and no one has ever expected Nebraska to stay down for long.

Looking forward to the game in Dallas. We know it will be a tough one.

What Texas fans and, more importantly, coaches and players need to remember is that there is no such thing as "a team that can't be beat."

KSU fans have nothing to hang their heads about. A 6-6 season with the talent (or lack thereof) is an incredible feat. Considering what Prince did to the program (gutted it from the inside out) going 6-6 with a newly unretired Bill Snyder, who had very limited knowledge of his players when KSU hired him again, is only something Phil Steele predicted happening. Phil Steele knew something even KSU fans didn't know. A second place finish in the North, no matter how miserable the other teams are, is nothing short of miraculous.

Most Texas fans are like most Nebraska fans - classy, knowlegable and love the game. Last time Texas played in Lincoln, I tailgated with a group of 'em up from Dallas, and we had a great time. It doesn't matter who might win or who might be better - Nebraska and Texas earned the right to play this game and it's good for both programs. Every Big Red fan knows we are still recovering from the mess Callahan left. But to be here after Bo's second year is pretty impressive. Shows what kind of charcter is on this team. I hate the overated SEC so any chance for the Big 12 to shine is great for the whole conference. GBR!
