Florida State defeats Maryland 29-26 on late score

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Greg Reid has made several big plays for Florida State this season, but none more important than Saturday.

The Seminoles (6-5, 4-4 ACC) were only a couple minutes away from a devastating loss to Maryland when the freshman darted 48 yards with a punt return. That set up Lonnie Pryor’s 3-yard run with 32 seconds left that gave Florida State the win it needed to become bowl eligible for the 28th straight year.

“I told (quarterback) EJ (Manuel) before I would set him up for good field position and all you’ve got to do is finish the game,” Reid said. “Everything worked out.”

Reid was lucky to get his hands on the ball—Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen wanted the kick to sail out of bounds.

“The kid is a heckuva returner,” Friedgen said. “Regardless, we have to go down there and cover.”

Pryor’s go-ahead score was his second touchdown of the game.

“I never thought as a freshman I would get a winning touchdown,” said Pryor, who also scored on a 50-yard run on a pitch from Manuel in the second quarter. “I ran scared pretty much.”

Maryland (2-9, 1-6) suffered its sixth straight loss.

“You can’t let people get away,” Friedgen said. “All we had to do was take care of business.”

Maryland’s Davin Meggett scored his second touchdown on a 9-yard run with 4:29 remaining that gave the Terrapins a 26-22 lead.

“We had a chance to finish the game,” Maryland linebacker Alex Wujciak said.

Maryland’s defense intercepted Manuel three times, the last one by Cameron Chism with 2:57 left that seemed to shut the door on the Seminoles.

But the Terrapins were unable to run out the clock and Reid, the ACC’s leading punt returner, gave the Seminoles some momentum with his return to set up the winning drive.

“We’ve got to make two first downs in that situation,” Friedgen said. “We couldn’t do it.”

Reid returned three punts for 88 yards and now has 350 yards on 19 returns going into next week’s game at top-ranked Florida.

Manuel, who was making his first start at home since taking over for the injured Christian Ponder, completed 17-of-27 passes for 206 yards. He ran for 49, including gains of 15 and 20 yards on the final drive.

Maryland took its first lead at 19-14 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jamarr Robinson to Adrian Cannon early in the fourth quarter, but Florida State regained the lead when Bert Reed scored on a 42-yard end around.

The game turned around dramatically just before halftime when Wujciak rambled 82 yards with Manuel’s interception to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Meggett as the Terrapins pulled within 14-13 seconds before the break.

Wujciak stepped in front of Florida State’s Beau Reliford at the Maryland 11 and ended up at the Florida State 7.

Robinson, a sophomore making his second start, completed 20 of 27 passes for 214 yards and was not intercepted.

“He was poised, he made very good decisions,” Friedgen said. “I was very impressed.”

Florida State finished its home season with a 3-3 record and for the second straight game there were thousands of empty seats despite pregame activities honoring departing senior players and longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews.

The 68-year-old Andrews was given a new garnet Ford crew cab pickup from his former players. He is retiring at the end of the season after 26 years at Florida State.

There was also a moment of silence in the pressbox before kickoff in memory of veteran Tallahassee Democrat sports writer Steve Ellis, who died Thursday at age 54 nine days after suffering a heart attack. Ellis had covered the Seminoles since 1990 for the newspaper.

I love hearing the classy comments from all my FSU brothers and sisters out there.

I was a freshman in 2000, the last year we played for an NC. I've been to at least one game in person every year since then, and it's been nothing but a painful downslide. Bobby has had 10 seasons since to be nationally relevant, and he hasn't delievered. Granted, I'd probably be ineffectual at a job if I was 80. I wish Bobby would step down after this year. It's been a great run old man, but now it's time to go.

Remember the Charlie Ward years? Those were great years...

FSU used to have a solid program.

I have been an FSU fan since birth and i can't thank Bobby enough for everything he has done for FSU in his tenure here as Head Coach. But enough is enough. I'm tired of members of the media, outside the FSU area, saying that "Bobby has earned the right to stay as long has he wants b/c without him FSU wouldn't be on the map." Bobby has done wonders for this program but I can't support him as a coach any more because he's hurting the team, "that he built". The coaching staff is divided between Bobby and Jimbo Fisher which is reflecting on the field with our stellar play this year. We also have had a few recruits back out of their commitment to play for FSU because of the Bobby Bowden situation we currently find ourselves in. I would love for Bobby to ride off into the sunset a "hero" to FSU but the more the drags on the more it feels like the Brett Favre sitaution. Bobby just doesn't want to let go but the time comes to leave when you are dragging the program you "built" back to the level at which you found it. Bobby, thanks for everything but, it's time to get out on "top" or as close to it as we r going to get,

Ashley, there wasn't even 55,000 people at that game. I know for fact that stadium will hold 86,000+ and have seen it filled to capacity more than once. The current FSU students and "fans" should be ashamed of themselves for that game not being sold out. That was pitiful. Bandwagon fans is all they are!

right you are, John (#35); he is not bigger than FSU, but he deserves mucho credit for his contribution for FSU. Basically, he will always be FSU's coach & already has the 2nd most wins in college football history. I doubt very much that anyone else will come that close. He will never catch Paterno in wins now; I just hope he leaves FSU w/ dignity & no shame. Religions have nothing to w/ it. Humanity does though.

I think it's funny that people think that the fans were not there in supprt of Mickey, I was at the game and the empty sections were the visitors sections....There was one tiny section of Maryland fans..so really who wasn't there for supprt?

I don't usually write in these things, but I feel compelled to. This is simply my opinion and that's all. This has been an awful season, if you are a FSU fan. The fact of the matter is the 2009 Offense is the 4th best offense, as far as output, in team history. The sad fact is, conversly, the 2009 Defense is the worst. If we had a 50% better D, the team would probably be 9-2 with losses to USF and Clemson. Who knows?
What intrigues me is 1.) Criminoles? That tired joke is from the Spurrier days and "Free Shoes". Someone said it earlier. If you want to talk criminal element, just look to past teams from Nebraska, Miami, many other teams, and the current Florida squad. As long as teams win, fans look the other way or every team would be BYU, Army, Navy, Vanderbilt, etc. 2.) All of the talk about supporting Bobby and if you don't, you're a "hater." Yes, he is the head coach. Yes, he made FSU an elite team. But what began in 2000 by bringing his son on board (to secure his legacy by grooming him to be head coach--in my opinion) and telling the university president he would quit if Jeff wasn't hired, making a sacrificial firing of the O-line coach in 2005 to show people he had moxey, and never fully supporting the new Offensive Coord. - he has lost perspective by thinking he is bigger than the university (as evidenced by Mrs. Bowdens recent rant). It is not one bad season. It has been deteriorating for a decade.
I was a grad student when Coach Bowden began and I respect the character of the man and what he has done. It just feels like it is time for some serious change.
I'm sure some people, after what I've read in other posts, will have some derogatory comments about this or me - whatever. Would just like to have some reasonable discussion - after all, in the end, it's only football :)

Who is this Phil guy?? he is such a joke!! hahaha, all these haters posting here. Teams have ups and downs, some teams last a couple of years before a coach come and rejuvenate the team, such as Alabama, other teams can take some more. Bottom line is that FSU isn't stuck in the past. Yes they are NOT an alite team, people have gotten used to FSU being an elite team with 14 consecutive years finished top 5, Bobby having the winningest record and still being second, heisman winners, and one of the best home winning streak. FACT of the matter is, FSU still HOLDS the nation longest bowl appearance, meaning we HAVENT KNOW what a regular season losing record for 28 straight years, meaning that most of the current elite teams out there at the moment HAVE had losing records in these 28 years. Florida State, unlike Clemson, is like a Miami and have the money and the fertile state to recruit and be back on its feet at any time, and I hate Miami but I gotta be objective. Most of these posts out of pure hate from fans who most like root for lousy schools that are now finally able to put some points on a team that owned them for 10+ years. And though I am obviosuly not a fan of Gatornation and the Canes, I must defend them because these these three schools have each produced some of the best programs in the country. FSU and its 14 yrs finishing top 5, Miami with is 5 NAtional Champ and record for longest winning streaks at home, and Florida with what has done lately, 2 National Champs in 3 years and possible 3 in 4. Miami is currently number 1 with the amount of NFL players, followed by guess who?? FSU!!!....some of these stats are from the past, granted, but Miami has done very well this season having 55 freshmen and sophomore, especially after two very bad sesasons, and FSU keeps its bowl appearances and has one of the BEST records against top 10 teams (if not look at the records), with the latest one coming this year against BYU AT BYU and a couple years ago against #2 BC. So I am very sorry, that's not living in the past. I am SO sorry FSU can't stay top 5 forever, or keep winning NAtional Champs and having heisman winners ALL the time, that's actually quite a hard job to do, but at least we are a nobody team, we have somehow managed to keep some consistency (not a losing season in 28 yrs) and a program like this can rebound anytime, other worse programs have done it. So Phil, get a life and all of those FSU and haters of the state of Florida (best football state in the country) can go to hell.

I think FSU qualifies for the inagural "Stuck in the Past" playoff series, to be played this postseason. Here's my Final Four:

    -FSU
    -Notre Dame
    -Georgia
    -Clemson

The championship will be played before delusional fans in a half-empty stadium, and broadcast on ESPN6 to a disinterested audience of about 27.

On the other hand: I think it's a crying shame that in Mickey's final home game there were only 45K or so fans. Yet the place was packed to support Bowden a few weeks. Those fans that didn't show ARE NOT true fans and are blind to the fact that Bowden is the reason FSU's program has gone to @#$%!
