Martin leads Boise State in blowout

LOGAN, Utah (AP)—Kellen Moore didn’t need to throw his usual three touchdown passes.

All the Boise State quarterback had to do was hand it off and watch Doug Martin and Jeremy Avery go.

Martin ran for four touchdowns, Avery ran for two more and both topped 100 yards rushing to help the sixth-ranked Broncos remained unbeaten and in BCS contention with a 52-21 win over Utah State on Friday night.

“It makes life a little easier,” said Moore, who passed for a modest 233 yards and one touchdown.

Moore had thrown for at least three TDs in six straight games, but the streak ended Friday night as the Broncos (11-0, 6-0 Western Athletic Conference) rushed for a season-high 323 yards.

Boise State broke a 14-all tie with four touchdowns in the second quarter, two just 43 seconds apart to start breaking down the Aggies (3-8, 2-5).

“We just came out with an intensity and didn’t back down. We just kept pounding and pounding and pounding,” said Martin, who had 13 carries for 121 yards. “It’s nice. I’ve just got to give out props to my O-linemen.”

Boise State added another touchdown barely 2 minutes into the third quarter and what was a close game for about 25 minutes turned into the rout it was expected to be.

The Broncos try to keep the streak alive next week at home against Nevada, which has won seven straight.

Utah State fell to 1-51 against ranked teams, getting outgained 572 yards to 363 in the latest loss.

“They are very good and they did exactly what they have done in every game all year long,” Utah State coach Gary Andersen said. “I though they controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football. When that happens, it puts you in a position where you have to take a lot of chances.”

Diondre Borel was 18 for 30 for 201 yards and kept the Aggies alive by avoiding several sacks with his speed, but the Broncos eventually started catching him and Utah State didn’t have enough other weapons to keep up after matching Boise State’s first two touchdowns.

After Robert Turbin tied it at 14 on a 24-yard run for the Aggies with 6:28 left in the second, the Broncos drove 73 yards in four plays to retake the lead for good. Titus Young made a diving grab with a defender all over him for a 56-yard catch at the 2, where Martin easily ran it in for a 21-14 lead.

Then Utah State fumbled a handoff and Ryan Winterswyk recovered at the 9 for the Broncos and Avery scored on first down, putting the Broncos up 28-14 with 4:04 left in the quarter.

Avery finished with 116 yards on 16 carries.

“Those are good running backs,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “If our line will give them a chance to get on their side of the line of scrimmage they can break tackles.”

Being down two touchdowns at halftime would have been tolerable for the Aggies, but another defensive lapse late in the period allowed the Broncos to drive for a 1-yard touchdown run by Martin with 5 seconds left in the half. The Aggies almost had Boise State stopped on third-and-10 with about a minute left, but Martin broke through for a 17-yard run to keep the drive going.

The Broncos opened the third quarter with a 71-yard drive, needing only four plays to score again on a 32-yard run by Avery.

Boise State intercepted a tipped pass on the opening possession and quickly took a 7-0 lead on a pass from Moore to Tommy Gallarda.

The Aggies answered on a 22-yard touchdown run by Michael Smith, who woke up the Utah State fans that had been drowned out until then by the orange-clad Boise contingent.

The Broncos got a little lucky on their next touchdown. The snap was bad and bounced to the left of Moore, but Martin scooped it up and bolted for a 17-yard touchdown run with 8:51 left in the second quarter.

“A slight mistake can cost you a touchdown and it did a couple times tonight,” Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner said.

Borel got Utah State right back, starting the next drive with an 18-yard option keeper to the 47. He also threaded a pass through tight coverage for a 14-yard gain to Eric Moats, then Turbin broke through the defense and ran 24 yards for a touchdown to tie it at 14.

Next week will be a good test for Boise State in its claim for a BCS slot. Nevada comes to Boise next week 8-3 and the only other team undefeated in WAC conference play.

Nevada is the #1 rushing offense in the nation, averaging a staggering 373 years a game, which is almost 60 yards a game more than a fantastic 10-1 Georgia Tech offense, the only other team in Division 1 football to average over 300 yards per game this year! Nevada is the #2 team in the nation in total yards per game (behind 9-2 Houston), and it is #4 team in the nation in total offense with Boise State being the #1 team in the nation with an average of over 44 points per game.

Boise State and Nevada are one of only 4 teams in the nation to average over 40 points per game, therefore, this game should be fireworks! The winner of this game will be the team with the better defense, because both teams have almost unstoppable offensive programs.

Clearly, if Boise State can get past this tough opponent, it should be a lock for BCS game consideration, especially if Oregon can prevail against rival Oregon State and take the Pac-10 title and secure a Rose Bowl/BCS game. Now if that happened, and an undefeated Boise State got snubbed two years in a row for a BCS game, well then, the BCS system is corrupt and should be discarded and the Utah AG should file that lawsuit.

the last thing i want to see in the bcs is boise, tcu, and cincinattit getting matched against one another

let them face the big 6'ers....let the floridas and oklahoma states and ohio states back it up instead of forcing the tcu's and boises to face one another so that all you big-6'ers cna just write off the win one of them gets as being over nobody

#246: Zac, a win is a win. Boise was able to outplay, overcome the odds and beat a heavily favored rival. They won when nobody thought they would. I call that a roll.

the 900,000 payout is not any different than any other team demand.s That is the cost of doing business and to make sure the other team does not cancel out of their obligation to return the favor and play on the Smurf Turf.
    t
Given how much money these coaches make, and the money tthese schools make on football, sorry the economy excuse does not fly.

If football coaches are so tough, then go and play anybody anywhere and stop beeting up on Chattanooga, North Texas, etc, etc. College football is really just a farce!

Boise is a fine city, I dont live there, but have visited numerous times. Get out of your bubble and learn!!!

Puckster, you've obviously never been anywhere close to Boise. Boise is the third-most populous metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest (behind Seattle and Portland, respectively) with a rough count of a half-million people. Compare that to big schools in U.S. "flyover country" like University of Nebraska-Lincoln (pop. 250,000) and the University of Oklahoma in Norman (pop. 102,000), and the argument that Boise is somehow outside of "mainstream America" holds no water whatsoever.

The 2007 Fiesta Bowl is widely hailed as one of the most entertaining, exciting, dramatic college football games ever to have been played, and were the Broncos to make it into another BCS bowl, people would tune-in because they are a good team and a lot of fun to watch. ESPN has televised a significant number of games in recent years, including airing half of BSU's games this season on their family of networks, which helps market Boise State to a national audience.

If consistently under-performing football teams like Baylor, Vanderbilt, and N.C. State, with a tiny television market and no national acclaim or exposure whatsoever, can be said to have a better chance of playing for a national championship than a team like BSU or TCU by virtue of their conference, the system is broke.

The Bowl Championship Series is not a life-time achievement award- to tell one team they must go undefeated, win a bowl game, and go undefeated again the following season to have a CHANCE at a national championship/major bowl game, while telling another it's okay to schedule cupcake non-conference opponents, lose a few games here and there, and still be a lock for a shot at the title is insane. If a team can be ranked 6th in the country and still be considered "very fortunate" to make it to a meaningful post-season, the system is fundamentally and irrevocably flawed.

Bosie fans are quick to rally around the "The big teams are afraid to schedule us!" theme...here's the rest of the story..while some schools have turned down bosies requests..it's not that simple..bosies AD Bleymaier first asks for a home and home, then a one game guarantee with a $900000 to $1 mil payout...across the country in the current economy, that type of guarantee has been rare and usually reserved for teams OK with taking a beating and leaving with a fat paycheck....so for example a school may well have an opening for 2011..but may not have the $$ that boise demands..or may be able to find an FBS or 1AA school that will take far less to play.

There is a major reason why Boise State cannot play any big-name teams or receive invitations to major bowl games. As they say in business, it's location! location! location! Boise, Idaho is an isolated pocket of sparesely-populated humanity surrounded by mountains and potatoes in all directions and not much more. Therefore, BSU is not exactly on the mainstream-America's milk run. They are in the lonely right armpit of the Pacific Northwest.

The only reason Oregon took on BSU is that there is local interest in the game - call it the Ore-Ida connection. When it says Ore-Ida, it's All Righta. ;-)

Major bowl games are commercial enterprises. They want to draw large crowds and lots of viewers. Putting BSU in the show doesn't have the same potential as signing a local favorite or a team located in a more heavily populated geographical area, city, or state. Consequently, Boise State will be VERY fortunate to receive a BCS bid or an invitation to a major bowl. I know it ain't a pretty scenario to Bronco fans, but it is what it is.

Personally, I think the best thing that could happen to BSU and the PAC-10 is for Boise and another dominant team such as BYU or Utah to be invited into the "PAC-12." That would help out everyone concerned and give BSU more respect and consistently better competition.

rolled OSU in the fiesta bowl i think we saw different games. What i saw was Boise State blow a 18 point lead fall behind use a trick play to get into overtime and then win it with another trick play. If you call blowing an 18 point lead and then winning in overtime blowing someone away i guess we have difering standards of what a blow out is

The only thing i have to say to these boise state fans that think they are big time is what is their record over the last 4 bowls they went to. Oh yeah i remember 1-3 and their win was overtime after blowing an 18 point lead. It is that win which makes them think they were elevated to elite status. It does not matter how good your season is if you cant win the big games. That is what good teams do they seal the deal. Boise State cant do that and their fans cant realize the fact that they are not that great. They are over rated period. They could play good teams on the road but they are 1-13 against BCS teams on the road i would not want to do that either if i were them. Why would a good school want to go to boise because their afraid i think not. What incentive do they have to travel across the country play in a 30000 seat stadium to prove to a bunch of clowns that their team is overated. Boise fans get over yourself keep playing in the wac go undefeated and take you money win you can get to the BCS and be happy. Fact is you would not win in a BCS league period. I doubt you would even win the moutain west. Until you start winning bowl games i could care less how many games you win.

Not a big fan of the BS, I mean BCS. Go to a playoff, that's the only true way to determine a national champion. That way, Boise State and TCU can prove whether or not they can play with the so-called "big boys." Plus, Boise State can only play the schedule they have. If the bigger programs refuse to play them (too risky, ha ha) there's nothing they can do about that. All they do is win, which is what you're supposed to do. Put it a 16 team playoff, then let the best team win it. (In my opinion, the national championship game this year will be the SEC championship game between Florida and Alabama.)

Boise St. fans are misguided fools living in a fantasy world if they really think they could even give Texas, Florida or Alabama, a good game. Join a good conference. But, oh no, you would never be undefeated. Scared? These three teams fear no one. All your talk sounds so stupid to everyone else.

It's November 21st and there isn't a single game this weekend that pits two ranked opponents against one another. The system is broken. With an 8 or 16 team playoff teams could schedule big non conference games w/o risk of one loss knocking them out of the National Title picture. Let's see USC/LSU, Oregon/Texas, OSU/Florida, etc

Post 229...Your post reads like you think BS needs to go undefeated every year and the WAC undefeated in every bowl to be considered for a BCS game. That's some lofty expectations that no team will reach.

VernH feel free to kiss the Big Boys AZZ's . SOS is 58th for BSU .power house games . None of the big boys are worried about your team . They just can't up and drop games to let BSU have the butt kicking they're crying for . You bear an average Sooners team 4 yr's ago and since then ? BSU could have reset some of their games but the only time we (the nation) hear of BSU is when their new PR spins the wheel and it lands on "Talk @#$%."

Schools from big conferences just don't want to play boise state because they don't want to do anything risky because they get an automatic bid to the big bowl games. BSU would get beat 1 of 3 times if they played the teams like Alabama and Florida, but they would put up a better fight then most teams in the Big 12 and SEC

There should be a 16 team playoff just like every other division.Their players still have to study and play games, but they seem to handle it.Are they better athletes than FBS.Can't mess with Bowls, but Bowls don't care about fans. Most are scheduled now so that a large majority of people can't watch.Used to be New Years was bowl-heaven.Now scattered over two weeks.People who go to work early can't stay up all night to watch games, and most are held up til prime-time on week nights.I say use the bowl venues to host playoff games. The final most important games would end up at the "major bowls",so they wouldn't lose their importance.Revenue shouldn't suffer. Some "lesser bowls" would probably gain in revenue.Like other conferences, the winner will have fought his way to the championship. And, if your team is still undefeated, you had to have won it.No doubt--no argument.

In other news, Boise State remains unbeaten as they run past Idaho Jr. High Amputees 42-13. The Bronco's kept the pressure up through the entire game, forcing the Amputess, normally used to playing 8 man football, to constantly throw the football.

7th grader Amputee quarterback Brian Kosworth had this to say, "They're just a great team. Once they took out Bobby and his one good leg, we had no rushing attack. I tried to get the ball downfield, but there was too much pressure and our receivers don't have arms anyways, so it made it even tougher. They were just relentless, I can certainly see how they win so many games."

What's next for the BSU Broncos? Time will tell. It's going to be tough for them to get a BCS bid, even with all of the quality opponents they have played lately such as the Amputees.

They did play Oregon, however, in the opening game and despite a rusty Oregon (who lost several players to the NFL draft) looking absolutely horrible with a first year coach and in Boise's own smurfturd field, managed to squeek by the one single ranked opponent this year. That certainly qualifies them to play for the National Title in this reporters eyes.

I'm sure the people of Boise and the greater Idaho area also agree, so let's hope they don't get screwed over by the BCS. Everyone can agree that they deserve to be in the title game.

to Jason W -Bring 'em on! The FACT is, nobody knows how good we are b/c all you big bad teams are afraid of us. If Florida and Alabama were soooooo sure that they're sooooo good that they would kick the crap out of us, then they should come CRASH ON THE BLUE just like everyone else. I mean, it's not like we have a standing offer to play anyone, anywhere, any time or any thing, so frankly, all of you need to PUT UP or SHUT UP. I'm tired of hearing people like you piss and moan about our pissing and moaning. You're like the French, all show and no go. If we loose, then all of you nay-sayers get a great big 'I told you so', but if we win, then we get the 'I told you so' and Florida or whoever looses face and rank in the MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BCS, and that's what it's REALLY all about, MONEY. You have your little oligarchy and you want to keep teams like us out so you can horde all the dough. Who can respect that?

Hope Boise State does well. Not a fan, but appreciate their circumstances. The BCS is an embarrassment to college football. Too much politicking and not enough oversight. A win is counted as a win, even if you beat Chattanooga, creating a great flaw in the system, which the SEC has taken advantage of for years. I don't blame them. If I were them, I would sure as hell rather plat Chattanooga, Florida International etc., than Boise. Sad fact is that a real playoff system is needed. Now, do I believe Boise would win games against the better teams in the PAC 10, probably not, but they deserve a chance. (Yes I know about Oregon) The system is totally unfair and the SEC has a huge advantage under the current system. With a playoff, it is unlikely any SEC team would be left after the first round. But that is just my own opinion. I think Boise is better than all the teams in the "Big" 10, but OSU will get their heads handed to them no matter who they play.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL.

all BSU fans seem to have a fading memory...they always bring up beating Oklahoma and Oregon, but fail to mention losing to East Carolina, TCU, and Boston College. Beating Oregon twice and Okalahoma once, big deal. Everyone fails to metion Hawaii beating BSU and Georgia destoying Hawaii in the sugar bowl. BSU does have a good team, but it's hard to judge how good when you play teams like Utah State every week. In a big six conferance they would still be good but certainly wouldn't have undefeated seasons every year.
