Third-string QB Weeden leads No. 12 Cowboys to win

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)—Drafted by the New York Yankees in the second round, Brandon Weeden was a starting pitcher all the way.

After giving up baseball, the strong-armed right-hander earned perhaps his biggest win as an ace reliever.

Weeden, the third-string quarterback for No. 12 Oklahoma State, threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the second half to lead the Cowboys back from an 11-point deficit for a 31-28 win against Colorado on Thursday night.

“Right when we came out from halftime, I just kind of got a couple snaps, threw about five or six passes and I was throwing fire,” Weeden said. “I like that. I really do. I think that’s fun.”

With starter Zac Robinson injured and backup Alex Cate ineffective, the Cowboys (9-2, 6-1 Big 12) turned to Weeden to spark the offense.

His 28-yard touchdown pass to Justin Blackmon with 8:11 remaining proved to be the winner, keeping pressure on No. 3 Texas in the Big 12 championship race. The Longhorns would have clinched the Big 12 South with an OSU loss.

“We kept on giving him the 1-ball, and he kept throwing the heater, and finally we made a catch or two—and he made some plays with his feet, too,” offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said.

Colorado got out to a 21-10 lead against the one-dimensional Cowboys before Weeden finally provided a viable passing threat. He went 10 for 15 and threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Keith Toston.

Weeden had to give up baseball when he started having problems with his pitching shoulder and he can’t explain why it doesn’t affect him nearly as much when throwing a football.

The lessons the 26-year-old learned during five years in the minor leagues— never rising higher than Class-A—paid off in his first big chance on the college football stage.

“Not necessarily my age but I think baseball really helped me out. Being 18 years old and basically you’re just thrown in the fire,” Weeden said. “Move halfway across the country and they said, `Here’s a baseball. Go throw it.’ Really and truly.

“Just having to grow up and learn that on the fly on my own, I think that’s helped me not only in football but in life.”

The Buffaloes (3-8, 2-5) had one final chance to go for the win after stuffing OSU on fourth-and-short for the third time in the game with 3:14 remaining but decided to punt after Tyler Hansen threw three straight incomplete passes. The Cowboys, the Big 12’s top rushing team, ran the final 2:45 off the clock.

Oklahoma State wore black uniforms for the first time since 1994—a miserable 3-7-1 season—and they didn’t seem to be a good luck charm in the team’s first Thursday night home game since 1995.

Cate, who had attempted only five passes in his career, started in Robinson’s place but went 0-for-9 with an interception in the first half—and it could have been worse. Colorado players had chances for at least two more picks, but let the ball slip through their hands.

Weeden came on in relief and connected on his first pass before throwing three straight incompletions for a three-and-out. When he completed back-to-back passes on OSU’s third drive of the third quarter, the crowd of 50,080 let out Bronx cheers.

Two plays later, Toston finished that drive with a 45-yard touchdown run through a huge hole on the right side of the line to cut the deficit to 21-17.

Colorado had a chance to stretch its lead, but Aric Goodman’s 50-yard field goal try caromed off the right upright and coach Dan Hawkins then opted to go for it on fourth-and-3 from the 29-yard line instead of sending Goodman out to try a 46-yard kick.

“We all knew as a team that if we got that fourth down, we were going to score and seal the game. There was no hesitation, we were going for it,” said Hansen, who threw incomplete to Riar Geer on the play. “I was going to the sideline saying we’re going for it.”

Oklahoma State came right back on its next possession to take the lead on Toston’s 47-yard touchdown catch. Toston released out of the backfield, ran between two blitzing defenders and caught a short pass from Weeden before racing into the end zone for the go-ahead score.

Brian Lockridge answered with a 98-yard return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff to put the Buffaloes back ahead with 11:11 remaining, but Weeden responded with two big completions on third-and-long before finding Blackmon in the end zone as he scrambled to the right.

“Obviously, he’s blessed by his arm or he wouldn’t have been in pro baseball. He delivered some balls and we made some plays,” Brewer said.

It was only the second win for OSU against Colorado in the teams’ last eight meetings in Stillwater. Both teams ended up playing switcheroo at quarterback, with Cate getting a 7-0 head start when Perrish Cox brought back Matt DiLallo’s first punt 67 yards for a score.

OSU’s defense then sacked Hansen on back-to-back plays to force a three-and-out, but Toston took a handoff from Cate on the Cowboys’ first offensive snap and fumbled for the first time in 287 carries—a span of more than two years since he’d been benched for fumble problems in September 2007.

Hansen capitalized with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Scotty McKnight before leaving briefly with a thumb injury. Cody Hawkins, the former Buffaloes starter and the coach’s son, replaced him and threw a 5-yard score to Geer to put Colorado up 14-10 at halftime.

I feel little pitty for Colorado. About 20 years ago Colorado shared a national title because of an infamous 5th down play and litterally were handed the trophy. They had a couple of years of success and over the past 13 seasons have lost at least 5 games in 12 of them.

Over the past 20 years the Buffs have beat the Huskers something like 3 times.

But what is one of the more fascinating quirks in all of sports is that Colorado fans are the most obnoxios and nastiest fans that I honestly can ever recall. The way Buff fans act you would think they have dominated college footall won five national titles, etc. etc. The way they act with Nebraska you would think they have beat them 40 of the past 42 years.

Colorado fans are truly just the most annoying fans in college football and probably the one team that I truly take a perverse pleasure in seeing get beat. Colorado is 8-40 against the Huskers since 1962 but Buff fans act as if they have owned Nebraska.

Colorado has won only 7 bowl games in their history and has 14 losing seaons over the past 30 years.

Colorado is truly a joke of a program and as much as they pine to be at the same level as Nebraska, it simply will never happen.

Colorado had a few years of success, a one time deal and have lived off of that ever since. If Colorado fans were not so snotty then I probably would not get such a chuckle out of their sturggles but I have followed Colorado for 20 years and have nothing but distain for them.

After this weekend, if all win out, it will be tough to pick the last at-large BCS.
Boise deserves it if they win out (bad schedule, but even their own win in a BCS game proves you can't say they don't belong, plus that Oregon win gets better this week)
    TCU would be in.
    Loser of Bama, UF in.
Three teams for one spot. Iowa would be odd man out, they beat PSU, but NW loss plus no one wants to watch a field goal competition.
PSU looked good Saturday and has a case. With obvious bias, I'd go with OKState if they can beat OU. Especially if it's Fiesta Bowl, Big12 ties and closer geographically. If the opponent is Boise, would be a great story line to see if Cowboys could go and do what Sooners couldn't.

You want to put this sorry a$$ team in a BCS game, please... The buffaloes suck as bad as anyone in the nation this year. OSU get a lucky break and still could get into the Fiesta Bowl.. I hope the Sooners show OSU what they are really made of.. "

A lucky break, you say? We had a second-string QB that couldn't find his a$$ with both hands, much less complete a pass, and that was about the only thing that kept the Buffalosers in this game. When Weedin finally came into the game and started throwing bullets, that's when OSU had it wrapped up. It wsasn't luck, amigo.....it was hard work and determination.

Now, will OSU get into a BCS game? I'm not holding my breath on that one. However, they WILL be going to a bowl game, while CU fans just smoke a bowl.

As for OU.....yes, it's been a while since OSU won one in Norman, but it DOES happen. The main motivator for OU right now is pride- they don't want to finish their season on a losing note, especially to their cross-state rival. However, OSU is a lock for a good bowl game this year- not so OU. Sure, the Soonrs will go bowling again, but it'll be some podunk bowl game in BackForty, Egypt (had to clean it up for the kids).

But, anything can happen........this is why the game is called BEDLAM.

Huskers a year from being back....the nine freshman that start for Nebraska and the 4 sophs will be a year older and better in 2010. Huskers graduate (one) starter SUH...although you can't replace the best player in college football, the defense will actually be better in 2010 and the offense will finally start growing up....GO BIG RED!!

Wow is there a post the Troll dan g doesn't post the word suck. Like greg said I wish people would quit hating on Iowa for the close win, just like with OSU's case a win is a win. That's what makes college ball so much more fun to watch than nfl especially this year. I would like to see OSU an Iowa in a bowl game together will it happen probably not, but I can't wait for people to have their eyes opened this bowl season. Though you know that if a confrence does crappy in the bowl games that is all some people will remember. That is one of the main reasons that I hope Iowa gets a bcs game so they can show people that the NW game should have been won and that Iowa is better than they seem. GL to OSU in it's bowl game.

    To 69. Posted by DavidF:

LOL ... why would I be whining about OU? I'm a Longhorn. I give props to OSU for their season and their win while dealing with the loss of their starter QB. Not every college football fan operates in "knee-jerk" mode when evaluating teams ... even when they are arch rivals. I laugh when I see all the stabs folks are taking at OSU. A good ball club. But so is OU. Bet you didn't think a Texas fan would concede those points ... did you? But then, my Longhorns are doing fine this year too. If they don't choke, they will have a chance to represent the Big 12 in the NC. I think Florida and Bama both will have a hard fight, because of their top-level defenses. It just isn't very easy to run the score up against. OSU found that out when they played the Horns. That's not me talking smack either. It's true. But then, Texas wasn't able to run the score up against OU either. A guy can't talk it up just to suit his wish. Have to keep it on the level. OU's defense, along with the fierce rivalry on a neutral field, made for a tough game. It's no accident that the top 4 ranked teams all have very tough D's.

Relax and don't take it all so seriously.

    Hook'em Horns.

OU's last chance to salvage any kind of year. LOL. I hope OSU hands it to the Sooners in Norman but history shows that OSU can't make it over that hump. GO POKES

ToddP, you win the prick of the day award, congrats. "jl". enough whining about Ou's injuries. As stated previously, OSU has had 6 players out that are either all big 12 or all americans and they find a way to win. maybe OSU has a lot more depth. ToddP, you're just a prick.

True Bryce, but OU has been plagued by more than just a few injuries. Their backup QB was totally harassed by Nebraska and fell apart under the pressure. OU has one heck of a defense though and that's why they managed to stay in that game for as long as they did. Stoops has some wrinkles to iron, but OU is in a better place than many mid ranked teams this year. Good program at OU. They'll spring back.

" insert team here--- Sucks" there's a nice argument, grow up

    Greg-
Last post. Let's compare losses (nice play-by-play of a game that was 21-14 in the 4th quarter, saw that pick) since that's all that matters:
Texas vs Ohio St (likely BCS Champiosnhip game vs 2loss, oh, and they played this one last bowl season)
Houston vs Northwestern (might be 55-10 and Keenum could break more records.
Point is everyone's on here downing OKState because it was close. All had close losses and all have 2 losses. I'd take OKState at full strength over PSU or Iowa , but good arguing with you about it. That's why we love college football and they won't give us a playoff becuase these arguments would be settled on the field.

DavidF - You're right, Gundy never whines ....he's 40 and he's a man!! 0 and 9 against OU and Texas and about to be 0 and 10. Those nice facilities sure have helped. Gets you a second string QB who can't even complete a pass in the first half and a third string QB who is a washed up minor league baseball player.

    Mike-
Just for the record...No way you watched almost the entire Iowa vs Ark St. game. After 3 Qtrs. Iowa held 21-7 lead, midway in the 4th Qtr. Stanzi threw a pick 6 that went 75 yards. So instead of 28 -7 it was 21-14. Next drive Iowa ate clock and finished drive with a FG to make it 24-14. Ark St. scored last TD w/less than 1 minute left in game, than tried desperate onside kick. Stanzi's final stats. 18-26 296yds 3 TDs 2 Ints. Total Yards: Iowa 420, Ark St. 296.

You asked who would replace the Pokes for a BCS bid, than mentioned the near miss Iowa had, I know your trying to make a case for your team to get that bid but Iowa is more deserving. You talk about OK State's loses to top 25 BCS teams how about Iowa's wins 2-1 vs BCS top 16, the loss... at the shoe in overtime to #10 Ohio State with a freshman QB making his first start. Like you said a win is a win and I'm sick of hearing about Ark St....Iowa won!!!
