BCS-hopeful TCU now 10-0 after beating Utah 55-28

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—TCU coach Gary Patterson immediately reminded everybody that the No. 4 Horned Frogs still have games left to play, making the expected ‘we’re not done’ comments.

Yet, he actually smiled.

And deservedly so, even if he’s not ready to talk about just how close they are to finally busting into the Bowl Championship Series.

“We’ve got two games left, we’re not going to talk about anything else,” said the typically staid and reserved Patterson.

With the hometown fans finally taking notice, and representatives from the major bowls watching, TCU crossed its last significant hurdle to an undefeated regular season with a 55-28 victory over No. 16 Utah on Saturday night.

“If the nation didn’t think that this was enough style points, then I don’t know what is,” Patterson said. “We’re just going to go about our business.”

The Horned Frogs (10-0, 6-0 Mountain West) put the game out of reach with three touchdowns in a 2 1/2 -minute span early in the second quarter and stretched their winning streak to 12 games since a last-minute loss last November at Utah (8-2, 5-1).

Utes, last season’s BCS busters, had won 22 of 23.

TCU also has won 13 in a row at home since losing when the Utes last visited two years ago.

With a record crowd of 50,307—a sellout at 79-year-old Amon Carter Stadium without the benefit of an instate opponent—and representatives from the Orange, Rose and Fiesta bowls watching from the athletic director’s suite, the Frogs put on quite a show. Fans stormed the field when it was over.

“We made a big statement,” said quarterback Andy Dalton, who was 17-of-29 passing for 207 yards with a TD.

Matthew Tucker had the first and last touchdowns (runs of 41 and 9 yards) for TCU, with five teammates getting into the end zone in between. It was the first time Utah gave up more than 50 points since 1996, and the most allowed since 1990. The lopsided game even caught the Frogs by surprise.

“Not in my wildest dream,” defensive end Jerry Hughes said. “I figured it was going to be a dogfight.”

Even without guaranteed access to the BCS, the Frogs have upped the ante. Instead of wondering if they can make one of the big-money games, now they have a legitimate chance to be the first team from a conference without an automatic BCS bid to play for the national title.

The Frogs are fourth in the BCS standings, the highest a team from a non-AQ conference has reached. They trail only Florida, Alabama and Texas—all winners Saturday.

Ed Wesley ran for 137 yards and a touchdown and TCU had 549 yards overall, its third straight game with at least 500.

Utah’s Eddie Wide, who had posted six straight 100-yard games, was held to 25 yards on 14 carries.

Jeremy Kerley scored on a 3-yard run with 14:11 left in the first half after a blocked punt. He then had a 39-yard punt return to the Utah 29, setting up Antoine Hicks’ 1-yard TD run. Tank Carder then returned an interception 15 yards to make it 35-7 with 11:40 left.

“It was one of our worst performances,” Utah linebacker Stevenson Sylvester said.

“We knew we would have to play our best and we didn’t do that,” coach Kyle Whittingham said. “The key thing now is how we respond. We’re still working on a pretty good season.”

The Frogs, 10-0 for only the second time since its 1938 undefeated national championship team led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Davey O’Brien, play next week at wobbly Wyoming. They close the regular season Nov. 28 at home against New Mexico (0-10).

Utah was the original BCS buster in 2004 and last year capped the only undefeated season by an FBS team with a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.

The Utes, who had won six in a row since a 31-24 loss at Oregon in mid-September, entered freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn’s second start as a nearly three-touchdown underdog. Utah was 5-1 in the series, the only loss in overtime at TCU in 2005, and won 13-10 last year in Salt Lake City by driving 80 yards to score the game-winning touchdown in the final minute.

There would be no chance of a comeback this time, especially considering that before its quick three-TD spurt, TCU missed a chance to be up 14-0 before Utah’s first offensive snap.

The Frogs’ opening drive ended when Tucker took a handoff, juked a defender and sprinted toward the right sideline untouched for a 41-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Utah’s David Reed had to jump over a teammate that had slipped down and then took a bone-jarring hit from Tyler Luttrell that knocked the ball loose. TCU recovered at the Utah 16, but didn’t make a first down and Ross Evans missed a 26-yard field goal attempt.

Utah tied the game 7-all when receiver Shaky Smithson took a direct snap and scored the first of his two 10-yard TD runs.

Ryan Christian, a converted senior running back who had his first two receiving touchdowns last week, made it three when he turned a quick pass into a 16-yard touchdown after shaking past a defender at the line of scrimmage. It was 14-7 before Utah’s next possession ended with the blocked punt.

Agreed ... a playoff is preferable. But the devil lies in the details. To keep the total number of games to a realistic number, it would be an abbreviated playoff which would still leave some teams disappointed, and some fans complaining.

Some good points. I don't like BCS system. I think it does generally work but I would love a playoff system but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

I feel bad for the players. I don't doubt that TCU is a tremendously talented team. I really hate coming across like I bash those teams when it's not the players fault for scheduling. Hey, TCU has won every game that they've been scheduled so i think the one who lose here are the players for not getting the chance. But until we have a better system this is how it's going to be.

For reference, I'm a Longhorn fan, but try to look at things objectively. I wouldn't say that TCU's schedule has been that weak. They beat Clemson. No, Clemson doesn't have a perfect record, but go check out Clemson's record. Their losses have been by narrow margins, including their loss to TCU. Worthy of note, that was a hard fought game for TCU with a close, and low score of 14-10. Also worthy of note, and to TCU fans in particular, Clemson was the first good defense they faced. Not to deny that TCU is good, but looking at TCU's two closest games, and you will see that it was against the two toughest defenses on their schedule. Air Force was that other team. Utah's defense was not that tough, even though as a team they were ranked. I tip my hat to TCU for their accomplishment. And I do think that TCU is ranked appropriately. They are tough, make no mistake. They too have a tough defense. In fact, looking at the top four ranked teams, they are also the top four defenses. So TCU fans, you have a team worthy of being proud. But don't be so blinded by your success over Utah. It would be a different game against Texas, Alabama or Florida because those teams have the toughest defenses. Frankly, I think Alabama has the edge over Florida, but that's no insult to Florida. Two great teams.

Also, I see lots of comments on strength of schedule, and usually citing ranked teams. The BCS obviously doesn't always "get it right." But generally, it is most accurate for the top teams towards the end of the year. That's obvious because they are most consistent teams and the picture is clearer by then. Throw USC out as skewed data most of the time due to the obvious hero worship. My point I'm working toward here is this. A lot of non-ranked teams can be better than their ranking implies. Clemson being an excellent example. They can spoil your ranked teams record if you don't take them seriously. There are teams like that in each of the conferences.

Bama has played 4 ranked teams at the time of the game:

    VT (7)
    LSU (9)
    South Carolina (22)
    Ole Miss (20)

And gave up 48 points in all 4 of those games for an average of 12 PPG against 4 ranked teams.
Truthfully, if TCU, Cincy, Boise St. had a real schedule then they would not be undefeated and I will love the day that FBS has a playoff system but until that day we still have the BCS and the "overrated"
SEC has claimed 5 titles in 11 years (Big 12 has claimed 2)

Who has TCU played? I mean really? TCU has a WEAK schedule. It's not the players faults and I feel bad for them.

FYI for 6 years in a row, more SEC players have gone 1st round in the NFL draft than any other conference.

Uh Porter.....Nebraska couldn't beat its own meat without messing it up somehow. U certainly must be dreaming. There is NO WAY Nebraska is gonna take Texas in the title game. They just aren't good enough and way to streaky.
    -----------------------
I don't think the Huskers can beat Texas - but streaky they are. They did beat Oklahoma......don't forget, the Sooners offense did what it wanted to Texas but ruined long drives with five fumbles and lost by a field goal (Texas' offense struggled against the Sooner defense). The Big 12 Championship Game can bring the best out of teams. I remember K-State knocking off Oklahoma. I remember an 8-4 Texas team knocking off Nebraska. And I remember a Colorado team (2001) season that lost to Texas 42-7 during the regular season then beat Texas 39-37 in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Actually, Terrance - if Alabama drops the Iron Bowl to Auburn (when those two play, throw out the season record) then whoops Florida in the SEC Championship Game, TCU will play Texas for the Championship. If not, then TCU will be stuck playing the loser of the SEC Championship Game just like Utah had to do a year ago. Then when the Horned Frogs whip them handily, like Utah did to Alabama, the SEC apologists will claim their "heart wasn't in the game." (Whine, sniff, and all that.....)

Listen to the BCS blowhards strut about - with ALL of the ridiculous built in advantages, they can and have been beaten, and beaten badly, as Utah demonstrated last year when they were denied a shot at the national title and settled for spanking former #1 Alabama, who was lucky to get as close as they did. TCU will beat whoever they play this year, having beaten several good teams in the MWC and whoever would play them outside the conference- another issue for non BCS schools. It is a rare day that SEC top teams will risk scheduling the best teams form outside the "club".

Talk about weak schedules, look at the bottom of the big 12 and even the SEC, hardly anything to brag about. Year in , year our, both the MWC, C-USA and the WAC have several solid teams, in spite of having to play against the BCS system as well as their opponents.

Why the Big East or the ACC would get automatic bids over the MWC is mystifying, but then, the BCS is meant to continue giving the 6 conferences the edge, in recruiting, in TV time, and in every way possible.

As a fan of the Big 12 I wish we could have got TCU instead of Baylor. What a great job Patterson has done. You guys are fairly consistent. I'm sick of the not playing anybody comment. I know Florida's ONE ranked opponent makes up for Charleston Southern(who?). Is it TCU's fault that no one will play a home AND home with them. Why do they have to be a sacrifical lamb? Don't give me the argument that the big boys go on the road with te exception of a tough conference game here or there. How great would it be to see FSU beat UF, then UF beat bama. Also watch Neb beat UT Cin lose to Pitt. TCU vs Boise for NC? Not in a million years, but woud be kinda funny!!

i hope tcu or cincy advances in the bcs ranking ahead of ut because quite frankly...they don't deserve to be ranked that high!! ut has not been challenged. this does not seem so because 'they are so good' but its more based on the fact that the big 12 is pretty weak and has lost a lot of credibility!! You guys have me laughing. It exciting to see a new face on the scene, but honestly, Have TCU played any great teams? What makes TCU better than Boise St. or Cincinnati. What makes TCU think that they have a shot at the title. Its ok to have dreams but sooner or later reality needs to set in. TCU has the same chance of making it to the National Tittle Game as the Redskins making it to the Super Bowl (you do the math.) The winner of the Alabama and Florida game will face Texas in the for the National Title, but TCU will get your shot to play with the big boys in some other bowl game and then you will truly see that TCU was not forreal.

Here is the link to the pages on this site which enumerate rankings of recruiting classes:

    http://rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp

Here is evidence on that site which provides rankings of teams' recruiting classes. The 1 beside Texas indicates that Texas' class is ranked first. The 68 beside lowly TCU indicates that its horrible class is rated 68th:

    1 Texas 20 0 17 3 3.85 2,295
    5 Oklahoma 25 0 12 13 3.48 1,944
    13 Texas A&M 20 0 8 12 3.40 1,492
    18 Oklahoma State 24 0 4 18 2.92 1,111
    22 Texas Tech 21 0 4 17 3.19 1,034
    24 BYU 25 0 4 13 2.84 1,012
    34 Nebraska 16 0 5 8 2.88 729
    38 Kansas 14 0 3 9 2.93 603
    39 Utah 14 0 3 10 3.00 591
    41 Missouri 16 0 4 7 2.31 563
    47 Baylor 13 0 3 8 2.77 398
    49 Kansas State 14 0 2 10 3.00 384
    50 Colorado 12 0 2 8 2.83 353
    56 Iowa State 19 0 1 11 2.26 320
    68 TCU 8 0 0 7 2.63 170

Pitiful Gary Patterson can not entice one 4 star player in America to play for lowly TCU. Every Big 12 team's recruiting class is ranked higher than that of lowly TCU. Even Brigham Young's class is significantly better. TCU's future is not bright.

It appears that TCU has a lot of fans upset over their recent success. Jealousy is the best form of flattery!

TCU went on the road and beat Clemson in Death Valley. They traveled to Provo and beat BYU. Utah travels to FW and gets spanked.

They beat Air Force in a ice storm. Bottom line: 10-0 and they actually beat the teams they are supposed to beat convincingly. Same can't be said about Florida, Alabama, LSU, Texas, etc...

    Texas signature win - OSU?
    Florida - LSU?
    Alabama - Virginia Tech?

Say what you want but the Frogs are for real...Hopefully things will play out the next couple of weeks and the Frogs can play for a National Championship. Go Frogs!

Consider if you will a non BCS conference tournament .Until the BCS changes why not have a championship with the non BCS conferences and independents like Navy or Army if they also have winning records . The MWC , WAC , MAC , Conf-USA and Sun Belt could take their conference champs and play each other for an Auto BCS spot . Get a contract in those regions with a Superbowl quality stadium .i.e Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego that way the best of those conferences get to play one another at a neutral site . This would give those conference a national spot lite and generate revenue for a buy in with the BCS and give them considerably more weight than they have now . If you look at other sports like the NFL-AFL , NBA -ABA . The AFL put on a good show generated enough revenue for the NFL to consider them a legitimate league to play .Same applies with the ABA and the NBA . Those organizations where so competitive that the larger leagues had to take notice and invite them in or risk failure altogether .

I think the teams of the non BCS conferences can complete on any given day , but the conferences are not respected by the majors and that's were the concerns start and end .

In your mind, everyone who beat Washington this year must be much better than Southern Cal.

Can you make a valid point?

Let's get realistic, TCU fans. You haven't played anybody up until last night and you had week after week after week of warm up games against poor excuses for football programs. With all those cakewalks, how could TCU not be finely tuned for Utah. Let's take a look at TCU's schedule.

Virginia. 3-7 including loss to Bill & Mary.

Texas State. Their schedule looks like a bunch of junior colleges.

Clemson. The ACC should stick with basketball.

    SMU. Washington State's only win.

    Air Force? 20-17?

Colorado St. 7 losses in a row.

BYU. Overrated after squeaking by Oklahoma without Bradford.

    UNLV. Horrible 4-7 team.

San Diego St. Worse than their 4-6 record.

Utah. Big deal. What have they done. Same patsie schedule as TCU.

    Upcomming-

Nov. 21. Powerhouse Wyoming team that lost to BYU, 52-0.

Nov. 28. New Mexico. 0-10. That says it all.

All I can say is, if you want to join the BCS party, play somebody or join a REAL conference. At least Utah played Oregon.
