McCoy ties wins record, Texas rolls 47-14

WACO, Texas (AP)—When the wins come by the dozens, some are going to be easier than others.

For Colt McCoy, count No. 42 among the easy ones.

McCoy passed for two touchdowns to help No. 2 Texas beat Baylor 47-14 Saturday, tying him with Georgia’s David Greene for the most victories by a major college quarterback.

McCoy is 42-7 in his career with two regular-season contests, a likely Big 12 championship game and a bowl still to come.

“Every time you step on the field you want to do your best to help your team win,” McCoy said. “It’s a tribute to great coaches, great teammates and playing well together.”

The senior didn’t even have to put in a full day’s work in this one, leaving midway through the third quarter with a 40-0 lead.

“We’re all proud of Colt,” said wide receiver Jordan Shipley, who caught both TD passes Saturday. “It also says a lot about this program.”

Texas (10-0, 6-0 Big 12) reached 10 wins for the ninth straight season, second only to Florida State’s run of 14 consecutive 10-win seasons from 1987-2000.

“Ten wins feels good. It’s one win more than nine and it’s one win closer to our goals,” defensive end Sergio Kindle said.

Those would be conference and national titles, neither of which are included in McCoy’s resume.

A week after throwing for 470 yards against Central Florida, McCoy passed for 181 while the Texas running game and defense did the heavy lifting against the Bears.

Cody Johnson ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in his first career start. Tre’ Newton dashed 45 yards for a touchdown, Texas’ longest scoring run of the season.

The Longhorns defense swamped Baylor (4-6, 1-5). Texas had three interceptions and forced a safety. The defense held Baylor to minus-20 yards in the second quarter as Texas turned a 14-0 lead into 40-0 by halftime.

Eddie Jones capped Texas’ scoring with a 60-yard interception return in the fourth quarter before Baylor punched in two late scores.

McCoy got the record-tying win in front of a road crowd that had to feel more like home. Floyd Casey Stadium is only a 99-mile drive from Austin. The crowd of about 44,000 was among the largest ever at Baylor for a Big 12 game and about half wore burnt orange.

The Longhorns quickly punched in their first score on the opening drive when McCoy found Shipley slicing underneath the Baylor defense at the goal line.

Baylor, still confident after a rally at Missouri a week ago, responded with a drive to the Texas 4. But freshman quarterback Nick Florence, who set a Baylor record with 427 yards last week, threw an interception to Aaron Williams in the end zone. Williams timed the fade route perfectly, leaping high to make an acrobatic catch.

“The game turned right there,” Texas coach Mack Brown said.

Baylor lost all momentum when Texas stuffed the Bears at midfield on fourth down on the next drive. Given the short field, the Longhorns scored again on Johnson’s 10th touchdown of the season.

Newton soon made it 21-0 with Texas’ longest scoring run of the season.

Texas started three touchdown drives in Baylor territory.

“I didn’t want to go out this way,” said Baylor senior safety Jordan Lake, who was playing in his last home game. “Wherever you are, as a defense you have to step up and hold them out.”

Texas’ only scary moment came when McCoy dumped a short pass to Shipley across the middle in double coverage. Shipley was hit hard and stayed on the ground for a minute. Texas’ best receiver eventually walked off under his own power, shaking McCoy’s hand on the way to the sideline.

Baylor was penalized for a personal foul on the hit, giving Texas a first down. Three plays later, McCoy pump faked before hitting Shipley in the end zone again.

Texas’ top-ranked defense got after Florence all day, sacking him three times, including a hard hit early in the game. Florence finished with 240 yards passing.

“I think Nick got rattled a little bit and rightfully so,” Baylor coach Art Briles said. “That’s the great thing about experience: it teaches.”

Baylor couldn’t do much to help itself.

Even when the Bears were just trying to get to halftime without any more damage, they bumbled away points. After Johnson’s second touchdown run made it 35-0, a fumble bounced backward 20 yards to the end zone and Baylor recovered for a safety.

Texas then tacked on a field goal in the final seconds to make it 40-0.

“I thought it was awesome in the first half,” McCoy said. “We really knocked ‘em out.”

McCoy’s 181 yards was among his lowest totals of the season, but he has four career wins over Baylor. Next week against Kansas will be his final game at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

“I’m proud that Colt got the winningest record for quarterbacks in college football history,” Brown said. “What a great honor for him.”

Folks...let's state the obvious. Strength of schedule aside. Top 25's played aside. Margins of victory aside. Strength of conferences aside.
We are going to get an actual bonafide NC game this year against two of the top programs of all time.
After Bama dispatches Florida (we have their number this year with our better defense and better offense), we will have the match up of Texas and Alabama. Of course, much will be made by the media of the Texas overall record of 4-0-1 against the Tide but you can toss that one out. The media is almost always wrong on the NC game and toot the wrong horns preceding the NC game. All that can be REALLY said is this NC game is gonna be a hell of a matchup with the winner probably being the team who has the ball last.
Roll Tide...just one game at a time. UTC, Auburn, Florida then Texas.

Folks. Hook 'Em and enough about strength of schedule. To go undefeated is quite an accomplishment, no matter who is played. I was having a little thread over on the TCU-Utah. Naturally, the bleeding hearts of the SEC were infectious. They were kind enough to remind me of Alabama's greatness 31 Bowl Games won and 12 National Titles. I had to call up my man Paul Harvey to get the "Rest of the Story". So..

    152. Posted by David Sun Nov 15 1:16pm EST

    1. Congrats on Bowl games and National Champions. No one is denying that Alabama has a strong history . However, this mudslinging about other reputable programs is intolerable - especially when you talk Texas-Alabama history. Here are some facts for you as well. If you are going to throw out the facts, then give them all...

Bowl matchups between Alabama and Texas. 5 Total Meets, all except one, Alabama was ranked higher. Record? Texas leads 4-0-1. Bowl games? Alabama's history is 30-21-3. Texas? 24-21-2. Yes. Texas is ranked second with Tennessee followed by USC. Alabama is top.

    2. The issue here is whether or not Texas Longhorn football is legitimate and whether or not they are worthy enough to compete with Alabama or Florida for the title game this year. I'd say yes. The schedules are comprable. As I have stated in other posts, if you look at those teams that Florida, Bama and Texas have played...all of their victims are no longer ranked with the exception of Oklahoma St and LSU. So don't give me the same old story about strength of schedule.

    Enough said.

Troy #25 - Quit being a dick and give the guy his respect ! Padding his stats....yeah, yeah...Texas has a weak schedule...blah blah blah ! You forget the Big 12 had 4 teams in the top 10 last year. Five QBs that led the nation last year were in the top 10. Don't act like Colt McCoy hasn't played anybody on the way to his records...hell..the 2nd game of his carreer was against Ohio State ! He set NCAA records as a sophmore..highest completion percentage as a junior and now tied for wins as a senior. He hasn't been arrested, has fathered any illegitimate children, hasn't beat up any women and thinks religion is am important part of his life ! Quality person and a stud......just the way we like em in Texas ! May want to look at our coach's records while you're a it...I'm sure he has played a soft schedule for every year he has produced 10 win seasons also...right ? Man..I hate ignorant and uninformed football fans....

    Oregon
    UC DAvis (FCS)
    Tulsa
    Blowing Green
    Miami-OH

Combined record above, 24-26; (without Oregon, 16-24)...rest of the WAC, 34-46.
Never mind; I see why you left them out to begin with.

The University of Texas holds a thing called respect. Many teams such as Boise State (The team who goes for 2 when leading by 40), Florida, and OU dont have respect for the other teams coaches or players so they run up the score. Plus Colt is a senior, meaning that someone meaning Garrett Gilbert has very big shoes to fill. The more experience he has the better they will be next year.

Here's what I think should happen w/ the rankings this week...if you look at the schedules, who played who, who's ranked now vs then, etc, etc.

Out of all of Alabama's opponents this season, only one remains Top 25 ranked. This is LSU. 'Bama has one more ranked opponent to play, Florida.

Out of all of Florida's this season, only one remains Top 25 ranked. This is LSU. Florida has one more ranked opponent to play, 'Bama.

Out of all of Texas' opponents this season, only one remains Top 25 ranked. This is Oklahoma St.

TCU. Given TCU's history to compete with the big leagues, including a win over USC back in the day of the SWC, and their current performance tonight.

Consider the overall team strength, I think it should be...

    1. Alabama
    2. Texas
    3. Florida
    4. TCU
    5. Boise St.

Though I really think Texas should be on top because it is playing the best Team Ball than Florida or Alabama. I'll give Alabama credit for beating formerly ranked teams this season. I do think that if the teams were really as good as they were ranked when 'Bama beat them, then they should remain in the Top 25. It is this last statement that justifies why Bama and Florida are nothing extraordinary when compared to Texas.

If you really want to know what I think, I think the Top 3 should be,

    1. Texas
    2. TCU
    3. Alabama
    then
    4. Florida
    5. Boise St.

Rod Muckelroy is a freakin' stud! He has definately maintained the pride and tradition of the Texas defensive line. He's a regular at the children's hospital on Fridays and wreaks havoc in opposing backfields on Saturdays.
Congrats to Colt! It's one more accolade on the road to the title!
How 'bout Colt & Jordan sitting side by side at the Downtown Athletic Club this year?!

One thing I do not like about the BCS is how they "worship" Florida. Tim Tebow, and the Gators team is probably, besides for USC, the most over-rated team. Texas played: Oklahoma State (who has a very good quarterback), Mizzou (who was ranked many times), Tech (who has a very good rookie quarterback), UCF (who beat number 13 Houston-who has a heisman contender qb), and they play Kansas (who all around is very good), and Oklahoma (who has one of the best running backs in college football), and Bama, who played very well against LSU last week, and they played many tough teams, is ranked third, while florida, who had trouble beating many teams, who has struggled against unranked teams, is number one. I think it should be texas or bama as number one, and florida as three. I know Tebow is going to win the heisman, but i dont think he should at all, it goes to Colt. I think Texas will embarass Florida/Bama in the championship game, and it will be a good night to remember in college football history... HOOK EM!

First, I admit that I'm a Gator fan who is grounded and realizes that football is just a game.

I do have a story that eludes to a Longhorn player that some of you Horns fans might find amusing.

My wife and I live twenty miles east of Gainesville on 20 acres and have seven dogs. They're all rescues or abandoned and have been given full names - first, middle and last (we have too much time on our hands). When someone abandoned the seventh dog, we took her in and my wife named her Flora Mae, but couldn't come up with a last name. Then, I was watching the Texas/Ohio St. game in January. Roddrick Muckelroy made a tackle and as soon as she heard his name, she yelled, "That's it! That's Flora's last name. Flora Mae Muckelroy!" She's an awesome dog and quickly became a favorite of mine.

I made it my business to find out what I could about Roddrick. He seems to be a great guy and a credit to the Longhorn Nation. I find myself thinking about him, and the Longhorns, about every day.

Good luck to your Horns, and you who make up the Longhorn faithful.

"Stunned", "routed", "rampaged", "embarassed", "flattened", "humbled"...quite a list the media used to describe the day USC had. They have been sized, measured and found wanting. What's a guy like Musberger to do in 2009....Pete Carroll at 8-4; Mike Leach at 8-4. Guess he'll have to wait for March Madness and Coach K to pass out his Bee Jays.

Doesnt look like any changes in the top 10 this week. USC will likely fall to about 15 or 16 due to the bias and other losses (Iowa, Houston, Miami, Ariz., Utes & likely OSU)

    Go Horns
    Go Frogs

These comments are very entertaining. A lot of pride/testosterone fueled theoretical debates. Who knows whom will win it all? No one. However, that doesn't stop any of us from planting our flags and laying claim to the top spot. Congrats to Colt for an excellent season, both on and off the field. Maybe not as sensational as last year, but exactly what the team needed. Congrats also to Tim T. He seems to carry Florida on his shoulders. Tragic about Sam B.'s injury shortened career at OU. What an incredible season he had last year-magic with the ball in his hands. And how about TCU. What an amazing story that is. Tonight's game will be a major hurdle, but look out if they win. With so much real estate between now and the end of the season, nothing is set in stone. Fasten your seat belts, and enjoy the ride.
