McCluster, Mississippi run over Tennessee 42-17

OXFORD, Miss. (AP)—Dexter McCluster says being 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds has its advantages on the football field.

No Tennessee defender could argue with the Mississippi standout Saturday.

McCluster rushed for 282 yards and finished with 324 all-purpose yards, setting two Mississippi records, and the Rebels ran over the Volunteers 42-17.

He broke the Rebels’ single-game rushing record of 242 by Dou Innocent in 1995. He eclipsed the all-purpose mark of 317 yards by Deuce McAllister in 1999.

“My size works to my advantage,” McCluster said. “When they see me, it’s too late.”

McCluster scored on runs of 15, 23, 32 and 71 yards in Ole Miss’ first win against the Volunteers since 1983.

“For 170 pounds he is special,” said Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. “He can make the first one miss. He has game breaking speed. Hs you can see, he won’t just run out of bounds on a long run. He’ll cut back against the grain and separate to get into the end zone.”

It’s the most rushing yards given up by the Volunteers. Tennessee had yielded 217 yards to Colorado’s Mike Pritchard in 1990 and Alabama’s Bobby Humphrey in 1986.

“We didn’t have a way to tackle him,” Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin said. “He set a school record for rushing yards, and we probably set a record for missed tackles.”

Ole Miss (7-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference)—off to its best start since 2003—clinched bowl eligibility for the second straight year with the victory.

Tennessee (5-5, 2-4) was without three of their celebrated freshmen—wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson, safety Janzen Jackson and defensive back Mike Edwards. The trio was arrested early Thursday morning for attempted armed robbery in Knoxville.

McCluster scored his first touchdown just 1:31 into the game and added another with 1:20 left in the opening quarter. His 32-yard scamper came in the third quarter and Ole Miss opened the fourth quarter with McCluster’s 71-yarder.

“It was a big challenge to cover him,” said Tennessee defensive end Chris Walker. “We had to know where he was at all times and he lines up at wide receiver and he lines up at tailback, so it was really hard to adjust to that.”

Brandon Bolden added 46 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels, who finished with 492 yards of total offense, including 359 on the ground.

It was former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron’s first return to Oxford since he was fired in November 2007 after three seasons. In his first year at Tennessee as defensive line coach the Vols have improved, but struggled against the Rebels.

Jevan Snead, who was 13 of 20 passes for 133 yards, was sacked only once.

Jonathan Compton finished 20 of 37 for 176 yards and two Tennessee touchdowns. He hit Jeff Cottam with a 16-yard TD in the first quarter and Denarius Moore with a 25-yarder in the second quarter.

But the Vols’ offense never got untracked, gaining just 275 yards over all, 99 on the ground. Their only other score was a 27-yard field goal by Daniel Lincoln in the third quarter.

McCluster....all I can say is DANG! My VOLS need one of him!! I figured we'd lose because of the off the field distractions last week but, I didn't think we'd get blown out. He really made Monty Kiffin's Defense look bad but we're VERY thin on defense right now.

Anyways, the VOLS are still on track to have a great year with Kiffin...At the beginning of the year, no one expected us to beat Florida, Bama or Ole Miss this year...actually, we were supposed to get blown out by these teams in which only Ole Miss did...the only goal for us was to get to a bowl game and have a top 10 recruiting class..as a VOLS fan, we're right on track...Kiffin needs 3-4 more years of good recruiting to get the program back...remember, these are mostly all of Fulmer's recruits Kiffin is working with this year.

    GO VOLS!

Face it folks there are thugs on all the football teams out there. Including the ones you root for. The difference between UT's thugs and the ones on your team..is that UT's thugs got caught.

Kiffin cant coach, he has high paid assistants that can coach and recruit, dont overlook that fact. Kiffin will probably bring UThug back and be very competitive, but, he is an ignorant, classless, lame coach. As for this being the first incident, lmfao, of course one of the players involved in the incident was suspended earlier in the season for failing a drug test, but somehow this was the first incident in 11 months, yeah right Kiffin.. Keep talking out bad sides of your loud mouth you loser. Sometimes its just better to come in low profile than fire up some of teams you play, you have proved nothing this year except that your team UThug is still mediocre , this was a great week for them, for the little baby steps they had taken, they took a huge step backwards. Now, is the chance to the other teams to steal some of those recruits, Lame will let them use his pellet gun for the heist.

Sorry, one last thing. The 3 guys who committed armed robbery - Kiffen needs to kick them off as soon as he can. As far as I can recall this is the only problem any UT players have had since Kiffen came on board. This coupled with the fact that penalties have been substantially reduced tells me that there is actually a lot of welcome discipline at UT. Other than this incident (granted, it's huge but still an isolated one) the program seems to be on much higher ground now.

Welcome to college football and, particularly, the SEC! First, guys, let's clean up the language and talk serious football. Yesterday's loss to Ole Miss was a shocker! UT had a dismal first half of the season due to Crompton and has had a great 2nd half of the season due to Crompton again. How UM was a touchdown favorite going into the game when you compare their performance against teams that UT also played was a mystery to me. Obviously, the big difference is a little guy name McCluster. I live overseas so I couldn't see the game but this guy basically won the game single-handedly. Give credit to UM's 2nd half defense as well. I'll bet Monte wishes he had assigned Berry to covering nobody else but McCluster that day. Would have made the difference possibly.

Anyway, when it comes to Kiffen, he's a young guy and has the arrogance that so often accompanies youth. I think the reason he's going to do so well in the future though is due to his assistant coaches. He took a pay cut so that he could divert the money to his assistants, who are second to none in the nation. Kiffen and his staff can, undoubtedly, recruit and his staff can coach. UT will do well consistently in the future because they recruit everywhere and have assistants who aren't as motivated to look for head coaching jobs in the future. UF's troubles will begin the day Miami and FSU resurface and start landing Florida recruits.

As far as the SEC goes, did you see what Georgia did to Auburn? Auburn dominated UT (the score was closer than the actual game) and UT dominated UGA (the lop-sided score was at least as indicative as to what happened on the field). When you get a bunch of young guys like this on the field anything can happen. For 2 teams to remain undefeated in SEC play (last second field goal attempts aside...) is truly remarkable and does anyone doubt that the SEC championship is truly the NC game?

Anyway, congratulations Ole Miss on a great game and season.

    Scott,

The difference between Dale Earnhardt and Kiffen is that Earnhardt backed it up with victories--plus he took it out on his competitors on the track not it the press for the most part. His brashness never got in the way of his kinder side. He would do whatever it takes to win and then after the race be able to put his arm around the driver he just knocked out and all was forgotten. I see nothing in Kiffen that leads me to believe he has that balance. He' a first class jerk--maybe he'll learn but I'm not hopeful.

Whether you are 20 or 60 it's easy to spot bravado that cannot be backed up. I agree with the Fulmer decision--but Tennessee could have done better. This guy lead with his mouth before thinking of the long term implications---brashness for brashness sake is a dead end street. His players will follow that kind of leadership and before you know it Tennessee will become the new Miami that it took so long for them to clean up (which they are doing now). He will probably get some wins but after a while he will continue to be the story rather than the players which will wear out his welcome. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until that interview yesterday--he's not prepared to lead in the limelight he so desperately craves.

Well im 40 and I think people who get on the net talking trash about others are just chlcken shlt punks so yes, that means your too old... ;-).. Internet cowboys who act bad behind a screen.. reminds me of those plss poor drunks that act 10 feet tall when they get a few drinks in them. Think what you want cuz I probably think the same about your coach but I don't choose to try and force you to think that way...Alot of people hated Dale Earnhardt but love him or hate him, he made racing exciting because it sux now that he is gone... when they stop talking about you is when you need to start worrying about your wins and losses..

He comes off like that too you because your probably older. To us younger people he is normal. We are just happy that we don't have the phat clapper on the sidleines with his 'Aw shucks' attitude cuz most people in Tenn knew it was all for the cameras and he was just a fat POS politician...And again, as for recruiting thugs, Everybody in the country was after Richardson and Jackson so saying that Kiffin knew what he was getting is rediculous..If you recall, Richardson was the guy that Meyer was calling every 5 minutes while he was visiting Knoxville that got all the BS stirred up..and Jackson was the guy that LSU people are still crying about not signing because he told them he was waiting a day for his mom to get there before he signed and then turned around and signed with Tenn instead of them... If you had watched Tenn football for as long as I have, then you would see the improvment in the play of the team from this year to years past. They actually play like they have heart and want to win where as Fulmers teams got lazy and had an entitlememnt attitude.

Post #32 - You live by the thug and you die by the thug.

Check FSU and Miami in the 90s...or check Oklahoma in the late 80s.
All of their programs came crashing down hard because of thuggery.
    Almost did Alabama in, too.

Oh yeah...I *loved* that preseason video Kiffin and the team with the Lamborghini and your black players wearing *chains* (seriously WTF?!?!).
Exactly what kind of message is that supposed to send to potential recruits?

I got news for you, UT fans...

Your "Lane Kiffin Era" is likely not going to last more than three seasons, and may permanently damage your reputation as an "elite" SEC member.

UT will be on some sort of major probation by the time Kiffin is fired, or soon after, if he pulls a Jackie Sherill and skips town at midnight, one step ahead of the posse.

Are you having a bromance with Kiffen? This isn't about how he compares to Saban, Miles, or Myer. He has and attitude that is beyond anything I've seen in a coach anywhere. Bravado is one thing--but most coaches let their field success do the talking before they start laying down the challenges. He acts like a spoiled, arrogant, no class brat that is way over his head when it comes to representing your school. I'm very surprised to hear all this blind support for someone that is going to be a constant source of negative controversy. He may turn the program around and be great, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen as quickly as everyone thought. Tennessee deserves better.

I find it funny that all you idiots are paying so much attention to a 5-5 team.. Don't you think you should be worried about teams that you will be playing for championships in the future? Would seem that way, I guess you know what's coming down the road and your taking your shots now.. As for the dude talking @#$% about Kiffin recruiting Thugs, I think he stole Richardson from Florida and Jackson from LSU so if they are thugs, they must have had a few more people fooled as well..Most realistic Tenn fans knew at the beginning how thin we were at depth and with the injuries adding up, everybody esle is seeing it also.. Our 1st team was SEC caliber but after that Memphis pushed our back ups around and now alot of our back-ups are being forced to play because of injuries..We have 5 walk ons playing significant roles now and you can't win in the SEC like that... We'll be OK and will only get better. Us Tenn fans don't give a rats ass whether you like our coach or not, We like him and thats all that counts. I think Meyer and Saban are prlcks but I don't get online trying to force it down everybodys throat so just STFU with that crap, and LSU fans, You have the most ignorant d- Coordinator in football next to Willie Martinez and Miles hasn't done anything with his own players so for you to be knocking someone else's coach is abit hypocritical.

McCluster ran wild thru the Vol defense while the Vol offense couldn't do anything with the Ole Miss defense (99 yards rushing). It was a decisive win in all areas. Tennessee didn't have an answer for Ole Miss in any area. Even on special teams, Ole Miss dominated them. Tennessee fans can call this a rebuilding year but maybe Tennessee should look to start re-rebuilding.

Another "wait until next year" game from the Vols and their fans. All the bravado trash talk to LSU, Bama, and Florida. YOU ARE 5-5 AND GOT ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED BY 'OLE MISS!! (congrats to Mississippi--fantastic game) You are now 5-5 headed for a third tier bowl (maybe). Is that the big improvement? Vols fans think if they get good recruits that counts as a victory. Watching Kiffen on the sidelines---all that he does is stare at is playbook--no emotion, no energy, nothing. Might be a great recruiter, but he has shown me NOTHING in games. Classic locker room coach that can't do it on the field. By the way, did you see the interview he had prior to the game on the attempted robberies by his Prius-pellet gun geniuses? Kiffen came off like an arrogant, spoiled brat! How do you Vols fans justify liking this guy? All talk--zero performance and he's a first class jerk to boot. Oh ya, wait until next year!
