Shipley’s big day leads No. 2 Texas, 35-3

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—At the end of his big day, a group of Texas fans were chanting Jordan Shipley’s name when he was pushed out of a group of Longhorns players, flashed a quick “Hook’em Horns” salute and jumped back into the pack.

For a guy who seldom likes to talk about himself, even he had to acknowledge the best day ever by a Longhorns receiver.

“That was fun,” Shipley said. “I was trying to hide in the back but those linemen grabbed me and tossed me out in front of everyone.”

Shipley caught 11 passes for a school-best 273 yards and a touchdown as No. 2 Texas shook off a slow start for a 35-3 win Saturday over Central Florida. His total yards smashed the previous school best of 242 set by Tony Jones against Pittsburgh in the 1987 Bluebonnet Bowl.

“He’s the best receiver in the country,” Texas receiver James Kirkendoll said. “There’s nothing he can’t do on the field.”

Shipley’s biggest moment on a day full of big catches was an 88-yard touchdown pass from Colt McCoy early in the fourth quarter on a drive that started at the 1.

Afterward, Texas coach Mack Brown joked he’d like to get another year of eligibility for his sixth-year senior.

“We’d like to get him a seventh,” Brown said. “He just keeps playing so well.”

McCoy was very close to a school passing mark as well. His 470 yards was just shy of current running backs coach Major Applewhite’s 473 against Washington in the 2001 Holiday Bowl.

McCoy took his last snap with 9:13 to play. Texas coach Mack Brown briefly considered putting him back in to break the record, then worried it would be bad form didn’t want to risk an injury.

“I just decided no, we’ve got some goals out here and neither of them are passing yards,” Brown said.

The goals are much bigger than that: winning Big 12 and national championships. Texas remains in perfect position to chase both.

It took the Longhorns a little while to get up to speed, though.

After three big wins over Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State, the Longhorns seemed ripe for a letdown. Brown tried to keep his players sharp by talking about the goals in front of them.

But the home crowd was late showing up for the 11 a.m. kickoff and the Longhorns’ offense was slow waking up. Early miscues included a rare missed field goal by Hunter Lawrence and a bobbled pitch by McCoy on a flea flicker. Catch the ball and he had John Chiles wide open behind the defense for an easy score.

“We went into the game expecting a fight,” McCoy said. “We should have come out with more of an edge to start the game.”

The defense kept things in control until McCoy and Shipley could get rolling. Central Florida (5-4) managed just 151 total yards, the third Texas opponent held under 200 this year.

The Knights started reserve quarterback Rob Calabrese and was without leading rusher Brynn Harvey. Calabrese, who started the first two games of the season before being replaced by Brett Hodges, was 10 of 19 for 76 yards and was sacked six times.

“It’s awesome to play in front of 100,000 people. Not many people can say they have played in a stadium like this.” Calabrese said.

McCoy and Shipley eventually found their rhythm. Long passes to Shipley kept Texas’ two scoring drives moving in the first half. Two touchdown runs by Cody Johnson put Texas ahead 14-3.

McCoy then hit Kirkendoll with a 14-yard TD pass in the third before the big strike to Shipley.

Shipley made a double move to slip behind coverage, snared the ball in stride and easily pulled away for the score.

“We gave up too many big plays. Shipley had too many big plays,” Central Florida coach George O’Leary said.

McCoy spread the ball around to nine receivers to keep the Central Florida defense guessing where he was going. The play before the TD to Shipley, McCoy hit Chiles for 12 yards to get Texas off the goal line.

Since a bad outing against Oklahoma, McCoy has been sharp the last three weeks.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt this is the way we’ll see him play the rest of the year,” Brown said.

Texas is now 9-0 for the first time since 2005, the season Texas went 13-0 and won the national championship.

“Any time you can be part of a team that’s undefeated, that’s what I came back for,” Shipley said.

So who's it going to be? Assuming Texas wins its remaining games. Florida vs. Texas or Alabama vs. Texas?

I'd love to see a TCU vs. Texas game. The BCS Title game could be coined, "a SWC Haunting"..ehehe.

Swamp Thing, are you really that big of a damn fool? Comparing OU to Texas? Son, you've been drinkin' swamp water and eatin' gator poop and your mind ain't right. Everybody knows that OU gets it's best players from Texas. Heck, they wouldn't have a team if the didn't have Texas players to recruit. Git back up there on the porch with the other yapping little dawgs.

Little dogs like Alabama always bark loudest at the big dogs like Texas that they fear the most. Just like 'Bama fans on these posts trying to trash talk about Texas. McCoy, Shipley, and the Texas "D" will take 'Bama apart like a cheap suit if they ever meet this year. Bet the farm on it!

For all you HATERS out there that said UCF was going to beat Texas i think you better get your football predictions up to par. I hope you all didnt put no money on it if so you owe that so pay that if you havent already. We may be #3 in the BCS standings but we still #2 in the Ap poll and the coaches poll. We know just like everyone else knows that Texas is going to come out on top.

    # 118 : Why do you keep refering to UCF as "sisters of the poor" ?

Like I said earlier, alot of lame as-es that need to do their freakin homework, before crying like a little pus- about Texas' schedule.

For your lame-as_ information, UCF is the 4th largest college in the nation so "sisters of the poor" really doesnt fit .

Personally I would love to play bama in the NC. I would love to see Mark Ingram try and run against the Texas defense. I guarantee you his numbers would not be impressive.

146 - Tony C - Dude, you ain't going to find what you are looking for. I have posted the same question several times and nobody can respond. EVERYBODY has a least three cupcakes on their schedues.

147 - herbert e - Look at their entire schedule. I understand that they lost to a Miss school that was an underdog but look at their entire schedule and where the teams they played were ranked. My only problem with last year's NC game was that TX should have been in it instead of OKL. As I have explained, Bama was down after losing a close SEC Championship game to Florida. Bama had no interest in playing a Utah team and it showed. I will not take anything away from Utah. They had a lot to gain and played a good game.

michael h i looked at the gaytors schedule last year and it said they got beat by an unranked team at home. is that right? they still got to play in the nc game while your bama had to watch after getting beat by utah, utah cmon utah. the sec is the only conference that can lose to an unranked team at home and play in the nc game sec sux.

Here is the way it is going down. alabama is going to beat florida in the sec. championship game and then they will beat texas in the bcs championship game. alabama should be rated number one right now. there is no football team that is even close to alabama. coach saban is the v ery best coach in college football and he has proved it. florida is scared of alabama just as they were last year. this year the tide will roll over every opponent in their way. texas is good, but florida or alabama can beat them. you see florida and alabama are great and that is what makes all the difference. just telling it like it is.

PLEASE........show me ONE team in the top ten that doesn't have at least 3 cupcakes on their schedule. When someone can do that I will eat crow. No......it's only fun to talk sh*t about teams you don't like huh? Look in the mirror at your own teams..........ANY contender has at least 3 pu**y teams on the schedule this year. Is this not true? PLEASE prove me wrong..........until then...............HOOK'EM!!!

Oh yeah BAMA's schedule is so tough, they played powerhouses like North Texas, Florida International, Kentucky, and oh yes, let's not forget about Chattanooga. And the GATORS have played a tough schedule with Charleston Southern, and Troy. And they play FIU this month as well.

Nobody commented last year when the HORNS played the toughest schedule and had to face 4 top 20 teams 4 weeks in a row. And they deserved to be in the Championship game last year but Oklahoma got to go instead even though Texas beat them. So this year Texas is going due to a weaker schedule, too bad, turnabout is fair play. It's not Texas' fault that the Big 12 talent diminished this year and their is still great. HOOK EM HORNS!!!!!!

Wow you Texas haters are unbelievable! They have TALENT people. They are undefeated. And shut up about "they play nobody." Florida plays nobody too. Alabama barely wins every week. So shut the @#$% up! Texas' defense is AWESOME! Alabama and Florida's offense is not that good, especially Alabama (Their offense is like a junior high B-Team). Alabama's quarterback SUCKS! You will be seeing Texas in the National Title if you like it or not. The only way to shut up all the haters is to have a playoff.

134 - wes -If you think that one call changed the Bama - LSU game, you are homer. I have watched the replay several times and the correct call should have been pass interference. There were also other non calls that should have been called on LSU. The non-interference call on JJ in the end zone cost Bama a first and goal and we ended up getting a field goal. The replay booth was not working so it could not be reviewed. Yea Bama got all the calls alright. $*&^%^ homer!

Who was it last year that broke every scoring record in the NCAA and was taunted as the most powerful offense in the history of college football. They averaged what like 60 a game against Big 12 opponents. What happened when they played for the Championship against Gators? Bradford sacked, Bradford running for his life, interception, tackle for a loss. The same happens to Texas.

Texas Longhorns play NOBOBY! Can Shipley and McCoy do as well with REAL teams. Don't think so. The SEC is a far better conference. Let Texas play their schedule and see how they do. They certainly wouldn't be ranked. Texas Defense is AWESOME yes, but only because they play NOBODY! Good Luck Horns, and keep thinking you are going to win the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
