FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Ryan Mallett went 23 of 27 for 329 yards to lead Arkansas to a 33-16 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.

Mallett was 12 of 13 in the second half, and the Razorbacks scored 23 unanswered points to finish the game. Arkansas (5-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) needs only one more win to become bowl eligible.

D.J. Williams caught seven passes for 137 yards for the Razorbacks, including a 69-yard reception near the end of the first half that set up an important field goal.

Stephen Garcia passed for 327 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4), who have lost three of four and are in danger of a third straight late-season fade. Mallett and Garcia entered the game ranked 1-2 in the SEC in passing.

South Carolina scored on its first play of the second half when Garcia threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery, but it was all downhill from there for the Gamecocks. First, they botched the extra point. Then, Arkansas took a 17-16 lead on Mallett’s 1-yard scoring run.

Jerell Norton intercepted Garcia in the end zone on South Carolina’s next possession, and Broderick Green put Arkansas ahead by eight with a 2-yard touchdown run. Less than 90 seconds later, the Razorbacks added a safety on a play that began at the South Carolina 32. A shotgun snap sailed past Garcia, and although the quarterback tried to fall on the ball near his own 5, it skipped into the end zone. South Carolina recovered, but the two points gave Arkansas a 26-16 advantage.

Green added a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:31 left in the fourth quarter.

Williams, a tight end, caught a team-high 61 passes last season, but he had only 16 receptions this season entering Saturday.

With the Razorbacks trailing 10-7 and 22 seconds remaining in the first half, Williams took a short pass, eluded a couple defenders and ran all the way to the South Carolina 7 for a 69-yard gain. Mallett nearly threw an interception on the next play, but Arkansas was able to tie it with a field goal on the half’s final play.

South Carolina is trying to avoid another difficult finish after starting 5-1. South Carolina was 7-3 before losing its final three games of last season, and dropped its final five games of 2007 to finish 6-6.

The Gamecocks wasted an opportunity on their very first possession. On fourth-and-1 from the Arkansas 6, they called two timeouts before Garcia finally ran for a first down. Moments later, South Carolina was ready to go for it again on fourth down from the 1, but a delay of game penalty forced the Gamecocks to settle for a field goal.

Joe Adams put Arkansas ahead 7-3 with a touchdown on an 18-yard end-around.

South Carolina took a 10-7 lead on Garcia’s 1-yard touchdown run after the Gamecocks stopped a fake punt in Arkansas territory.

With the impending rookie salary caps... it is highly unlikely Mallet stays for his senior year... we will lose many players... as will all college teams... the draft before the salary caps. That will be the most hectic year for college football.

I agree jjeffers49, we are making progress, we are a very young team, we should, in spite of our many growing pains, finish 7-5 this year, compared to 5-7 last year, I'm okay with that. I can't see any reason we can't be at worse, 8-4 next year, probably no better than 10-2. This year, I picked us at worse 7-5, at best 9-3. Mathamatically, we could finish 8-4, I'm not ruling out beating LSU, especially since finding out Charles Scott broke his collarbone in Tuscaloosa this last weekend. I hate it for this young man, but him being out of their roster, it may give us enough edge to pull off the upset in Baton Rouge!

I am not so much a Carolina fan but hate to see this happen to them year after year. The problem is the o-line but the defense is overall young and not that great this year versus the run and Mallet picked the secondary apart. The good news for Carolina fans is that it might be getting close to time for a Spurrier exit and guess what another washed up coach might be out there cause it looks like ND is about to get rid of Weiss, so there is the next coach for Carolina. Sorry thta was a shot but i could not resist, seriously the next coach needs to be a young guy that is not looking for his final payday as a coach. Spurrier has had decent recruits but has shown none of the fire he had at Duke and Florida. Carolina fans deserve better from their coach and the next coach should be a young guy that can build the program and stay around for more than 6-7 years.

hey michael h, i agree with your post. were not an a team ,yet. the offense is going the right direction though.the thing about mallet is he doesnt always set his feet, so he is inconsistent . true sometimes he is running for his life, but still. special teams under john l scott needs to improve. that fake punt in the sc game blew up in our face, and was an extremely risky call on our what, 25 or 30 yard line. that led to a sc td. the defense is the area that needs to improve the most. we have been burned deep 2 many times. recruiting defensive players that can stop the run and pass is what it will take to consistently win in the sec as im sure your well aware of.ive heard from another post this is a typical bobby petrino ball club. boy i hope not because we will never win the sec championship much less the sec west with that kind of defensive inconsistency. i do think next year we could go 10-3. its the year after that i think we could win a nc if mallet stays his senion season. go hogs.

hey from the real world, you seem to always have something negative to say about the hawgs. for one, south carolina is not a patsy ball club, they have had their good and their bad, just like any ball club.secondly, you didnt mention who your team was. finally, you need to calm down and get off the hogs ass. you should seriously consider getting help. dont know if you lost a bet on them long ago or what your trip is, but one can tell you dont have much of an education and you have a beef with them. good to hear that your club, whoever they are, won 7 national championships. get some rest.

seriously!hogs are a good football team and so is S.C..hogs got a few breaks off of S.C miscues, take a bad snap out of it and a missed exra pt that took the wind out of the sails and we have a good game. Hogs are on their way, seems they have some mental blocks a few times. young though. I consider this season for arkansas a successful one, they have learned a lot!!

I'm getting real sick of Carolina's crap. Every year it's the same damn thing. We start out good, but finish barely over 500. While on the other hand Clemson is the complete opposite, they start out bad, but finish good. Now since losing two straight, I guarantee you we will lose our last two games. Florida hasn't been playing great, but they get the job done and Clemson has been a beast since that bye week, 4 straight win's. More than likely we'll finish 6-6 and if we do get to go to a bowl it will be some crap bowl which we will end up losing anyway. I hate to put my team down, but this is the same crap every year. What sucks even more is that Clemson will more than likely beat us so I'll have to deal with their crap for the next 365 days. I'm just going to tell them "yea I know y'all are going to win" so when they do it won't be such a surprise. Looking at our team, our problem is our offensive line. They are not blocking for our QB which is why he gets sack or hurried in the pocket making him throwing bad passes. Our offensive line not opening holes for our running backs and our offensive line is playing horribly causes us to keep our defensive on the field more and they can only do so much. If we can get our offensive line to improve during our bye week we can probably beat Clemson. Since our game is at home and hopefully the game is at night and our fans are into it we can walk out with a W, but Florida is a loss cause. Beating Clemson and being 7-5 and probably going to the Outback Bowl and if we can win that, then I will say we had a good season.

I'm a Razorback fan to the core, but until we get some consistency, we aren't no A team! I know you can't take parts of our program, but I often wonder if we would have a QB and receivers like we have now, and McFadden and Jones, we would be a very, very good football team. I wouldn't call Georgia an A team, if we had any type of defense coverage, or running game like we did when we played Florida, we would of beat the Bulldogs! Ole Miss is about as good as it's going to be, they'll fade next year. Unsure about Auburn, we should improve, but the team next year that will give Florida fits in the East, is Tennessee, the Vols are beginning to gel! If we can come up with half the running game we had with McFadden and Jones, with Mallett passing the ball to our very good receivers, we should be a fairly decent club next year! I look for the Hogs to go 7-5 this year, wished we could of done better, but much better then the 5-7 mark last year! And yes, I love see Steve Spurrier throw his little hissey fits on the sideline, it was fun! GO HOGS!!!!

I'm a diehard Gamecock fan and supporter but truth of the matter is that our schedule is too difficult. Think about it we got to mix our schedule up like the rest of the SEC our two cake walk teams were S.C State(who almost beat us btw) and Florida Atlantic then we play a slew of SEC opponents with our bye coming the third game before the season's end. Keep in mind who Ark. played last we E. Mich I think. It's nice to open with N.C State but we honestly probably wouldn't beat them if we played 'em next week. The point of it all is the Eric Hyman(A.D) needs to re-evaluate our schedule because Carolina is a Coaches Graveyard at this point. Our last two coaches including the current have had nominal success but success at Carolina is going to the Carquest or the Outback bowl at this rate we won't compete for an SEC championship. The success we enjoyed under Coach Lou Holtz was ill-fated amid NCAA violation so that counts for nothing. I blamed the guys who left early last year for the NFL but I understand why now. Carolina= A sad state of affairs. -Forever to thee Go@#$%s c/o 2003

First, just a point about grade of teams in the SEC currently Carolina is 2-4 in the conference and that puts them 11th of 12 teams just ahead of Vandy. If not for cupcake games versus Fla Atlantic and SC State and a win over a bad NC State team, plus a few close wins, this team would be more like 4-6 instead of 6-4. This game was over with 8 minutes left in the third quarter and that is a fact. Carolina just gave up with the pick in the endzone. Now comes the homestand versus #1 Florida and a Clemson team that very well might be looking ahead to the ACC title game and a chance at a BCS bowl, which Carolina has never even in their best year been close to getting. So for the Carolina idiot on here bashing a Clemson team that handled FSU last nite despite trying to give them the game. Shut your mouth and watch your Carolina team collapse..... again. The will not finish better then 7-5 and more likely 6-6, the only reason I give them any shot versus Clemson is that the Tigesr will probably be more focused on Ga Tech for the ACC title than playing a floundering Carolina team needing a win to secure that precious music city bowl bid to play either FSU or Duke. I have respect for Carolina but some of their fans are sad, pathetic, and in denial. This team has a chance to be good next year and I know this is not what you want to hear but this season is lost and for the carolina faithful, you must look to the future where Carolina has a shot next year with UGA, Florida, and Tenn. being down. That being said UGA and Tenn. were down this year and still managed to beat Carolina.

Well congrats to the Hogs for dominating in the battle of two of the SEC's grade B teams.

Florida, Bama, Georgia and LSU being the A teams. Arkansas, Carolina, Tennessee, Mississipi and Auburn being in the B bracket. Good but just not good enough. But enough to ensure that the conference gets at least six bowl teams which is good overall for the conference.

and Miss State, Kentucky and Vandy fill out the grade C teams.

For your information, Florida didn't pummellt us, they got very lucky, they certainly didn't hammer us! And if your talking about LSU being the 'puddycats' we beat them the last two years, which makes me wonder if you even know what a football is! When I hear people say some of the crap you said about my state, it makes me realize the ones talking, certainly have little or no room to talk. Before you go talking about us 'toothless Arkies', may I suggest a mirror! I got all my teeth but I bet your face looks about like your a$$!

Shoot, I'm not going to lie, if we can have three more pastries, I'd love it! South Carolina isn't what I'd call a great team, but a good team, at best, I don't see my Razorbacks winning but 2 more games. even if we do end up 6-6, we may not get a bowl game, compared to last year, I would be satisfied with any bowl game. Overall, I'm not totally disappointed, we had a couple of games we could or should of won but didn't, the only real ugly game we had was against Alabama! As far as Houston Nutt, good riddance, he had his chance in Arkansas, let me put it this way, we had two of the best backs in the nation, and could only finish 9-3 and 8-4, then yes, that is disappointing. Petrino is at least moving us in the right direction, Ole Miss will one day figure out what our ex coach was about, let them be a team of underachievers for the next 10 years, I got so sick of that!
