Gators struggle on offense again, beat Vandy 27-3

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Everything top-ranked Florida seemingly fixed on offense last week looked out of whack again against Vanderbilt.

Tim Tebow accounted for two touchdowns—one of them on a tipped pass— Caleb Sturgis kicked two field goals and the Gators beat the Commodores 27-3 in a lackluster effort Saturday night at The Swamp.

It probably left Florida fans, many of them looking for something positive following linebacker Brandon Spikes’ one-game suspension for dirty play and coach Urban Meyer’s hefty fine for criticizing officials, disappointed. But the result was a 19th consecutive victory for the defending national champions.

“Have you ever gone 19-0?” Meyer said. “It’s not ho-hum, I can assure you that. If it’s ho-hum for someone, you’ve got to really reflect to say, ‘Where am I headed in this life right now?’ If 19-0 in the Southeastern Conference at the University of Florida is ho-hum, then you’ve got one exciting life, man, you’ve got a lot of good stuff going for you.

“I don’t ever want to take anything away from what those cats have done. Two out of three times we’re going to go play in Atlanta for the SEC championship in the best conference in college football. There’s absolutely nothing ho-hum about what this team is doing.”

Indeed. But the Gators (9-0, 7-0 Southeastern Conference) struggled on offense for the fifth time in seven league games.

The solution was standing on the sideline in street clothes. Percy Harvin, a first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings, attended the game along with former teammate and current Oakland Raiders receiver Louis Murphy.

A week after finding some offensive rhythm in a 41-17 victory over Georgia and clinching a spot in the SEC title game, Florida looked more like the team that eked out close games against Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas and Mississippi State.

Tebow completed 15 of 20 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. But a big chunk of his yardage came on a 64-yard run-and-catch by Aaron Hernandez late in the fourth quarter, and his TD pass to David Nelson in the fourth quarter came on a ball that slipped through Riley Cooper’s fingers near the goal line.

“You’d like to put the ball in the end zone more and not kick field goals,” said Tebow, who also ran 16 times for 27 yards and a score. “But we’re going to be happy being 9-0. Not too many teams in the country are 9-0.”

Vanderbilt, coming off a 56-31 loss to Georgia Tech in which it allowed 497 yards rushing, returned to its usually stout defensive ways. The Commodores (2-8, 0-6), who have lost six in a row, sacked Tebow four times.

They played mostly zone and blitzed early and often, taking away deep passes and keeping steady pressure on the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner.

“We need big plays,” Meyer said. “Any offense in the country, to get production, you need big plays. … We’re just not getting that. I know everyone is pressing to get it done, and we have to get that done with these games coming up.”

Florida finished with 375 yards, but about a third of them came late in the game—well after some fans headed for the exits.

Jeff Demps ran seven times for 57 yards and a touchdown that came on one of the few option plays Florida ran. Hernandez finished with seven catches for 120 yards. Florida’s defense was stingy as usual, giving up 199 yards and not allowed a touchdown for the fifth time this season.

Spikes was hardly missed. He watched the game from the sideline in a warmup suit and with a freshly shaved face—maybe an attempt to change his image following his eye-gouging incident against the Bulldogs.

Linebackers Dustin Doe and Ryan Stamper filled in well, helping shut down Vandy’s offense. The ‘Dores didn’t take too many chances with quarterback Mackenzi Adams making his first start of the season.

Adams was 13 of 29 for 100 yards, with an interception. He used a lot of quick passes to avoid Florida’s pass rush, and it worked. The Gators failed to sack him.

Vanderbilt could have made it even closer had it not been for two costly errors. Florida turned Adams’ pick into a touchdown and scored after punter Brett Upson mistakenly touched his knee to the ground as he fielded a low snap deep in Vanderbilt territory.

“We can’t mess up in those situations,” said Commodores coach Bobby Johnson, whose team trailed 13-0 at halftime and 20-3 entering the fourth. “It’s hard to beat a good team.”

Now if South Carolina and Auburn can rise to the occasion and end the "perfect" seasons, all will be good. Spurrier would love to notch one against his former babes. And of course, when Auburn plays Alabama, throw out the season records.

Then, it's TCU vs Texas for the National Championship..........an old Southwest Conference rivalry.

Unless Texas drops one to the "North" winner in the Big 12 Championship game.

NC game...Alabama or Florida VS. Texas...All the others out there from TCU to Cincy can just go on home now and talk about next year. IMHO, the SEC Championship game is the National Title game. The Alabama Florida winner just has to play one more against Texas to prove it to all the naysayers that just can't handle the SEC always winning the NC.

Rick Z is a 10 year old without parental supervision. Understand that and you'll get the gist of his posts completely... Beyond that it's just immature noise.

I agree, if you call a three TD visctory struggling, then we;ll take it in stride. Three more games to go. If we can get through the regular season without a loss, then its on to Atlanta to face the Tide for the SEC! Winner of that game will most likely take the National Championship this year. Texas looks like the only team that could give Florida a Bama a run.

TCU, Boise or Cincy in the NC game.... that's just funny!

Gator Nation...Back away from the ledge...The Gators are just fine. Ask Pete Carroll if he would trade places with Urban right now. Ask Chucky Weis if he would like to be 9-0 and taking critcism for being unbeaten. Our only problem on offense is siting in Minnesota. Take away a once in a lifetime player like Percy and D-Coord in the SEC can game plan against you that much better. Did everyone in Gator nation believe that Tebow was doing all that stuff last year by himself??? Think again..He's great but you can account for Tim by blitzing Tim relentlessly and Teams now have an extra man to do this with because you don't have to account for Harvin. Go Gators!!! We will be just fine. ps...The Defense is the best in the Nation and Defense wins National Championships. (Sorry for the cliche)

Dear Gator Nation, Please come together and rejoice in every victory. Dont let the media paint a struggling picture...dont complain about the offense or offensive coaches....cause win or lose we are still champions and that can all change in a hurry.....just ask the Miami Hurricanes. We could win it all again this year....and then lose Tebow, Spikes, most of the defense....and if the fans keep crying we could lose Meyer to Notre Dame or the NFL.....Please i beg you enjoy it....19 wins in a row in the Sec.....Sec east champs again.......a shot at 24 wins in a row and another Natl Championship are you serious......Rejoice while you can and eventually we will lose and when we do I know the stands will erupt with the loudest cheer of them all..."Its great to be a Florida Gator"

I've been laying it on Tebow too much. Who's protecting Tebow? NOBODY !!!! What the hell happened to the O-line. Who tells the number one team in the nation to kick field goals from the red zone when we're playing an unranked team? Addazio!!! And Urban Meyer seems to be satisfied with all of this conservative football. Whatever happened to the smashmouth, swashbuckling gators? We should have vanquished Vandy just for the hell of it, just because we could, just because we had nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon.
    Conservative football is @#$% football.

The top 3 - FL, AL and TX are really close. On any Saturday either one is best. Observations: FL beat LSU by 10 and Bama beat them by 9. Tebo doesn't look great but better than what Bama has. TX schedule is weaker than the other two so who really knows about them. I expect FL will squeek it out again but Bama is really solid other than their QB. USC is also quite good but not consistant. They just lost too many players to the NFL. It seems they are always starting fresh. Amazing what they accomplish under those circumstances. But in the end, the SEC is the toughest. I expect FL will go all the way but TX is the wild card.

Imagine an SEC east vs SEC west Nation Championship game!!!! That would be one of the greatest games ever played.....Rumor has it that There Is a slight possibility for a SEC championship rematch in the National Championship.....IF Texas loses ANY game from here on out and IF Florida were to lose in the SEC championship (which is unlikely) then Florida would drop to 4th or 5th in the standings. BCS rules says only one AT large spot for a non BCS team, so TCU or Boise State will get a BCS shot.(Sucks to be the loser in that arguement). SO only TCU/BS or Cincinnatti would remain ahead of Florda. And as we have seen several times in the past, the great non- BCS teams always fail durning crunch time. Leaving only CIncinatti as the only threat in the way. But Cincy still has to make it thru a tough Pittsburgh team. Meanwhile, Florida is sitting pretty waiting for all this to play out and having their sights on Alabama for a rematch at the NCS

rick z - You're on here again. Retards! Illiterates! Inbreds!

Oh rick, please stop. You're hurting our feelings with your rash generalizations and insults. I hope I can sleep tonight knowing that you feel that way. After all, when you hurl to the insults, my mind goes blank. I'm just so frustrated I can't think of anything to say. You are such a mature and intelligent individual, how would one respond?

Florida hasn't lost in 19 games. How have your USC Trojans faired during that period? Don't bother answering, that was a rhetorical question. I think I can speak for the vast majority of people posting on here when I say that nobody cares. After all, USC could have had their chance to beat UF were it not for 3-6 Washington.

By the way, the year after that NC game loss you refer to (by what many consider the best college football team to take the field) Florida won the NC game by 32 points.

Keep posting, rick. We're all looking for a laugh every now and then.

So, let's see . . . the Gators offense looks awful again against a bad team, Tebow as usual throws a horrible pass into the endzone and gets a lucky bounce, and yet these Yahoo sports writers like Dienhart move Tebow UP the rankings for the Heisman??? WTF??? Are these sportswriters blind? Florida may be #1, and they are undefeated (thanks to the refs), but it certainly isn't thanks to Tebow. Florida keeps winning depsite Tebow, not because of him. He has SUCKED all year long. He shouldn't even be in the top 10 for the Heisman.

    Dear FloridaFan62,
My favorite team has 12 National Championships. We have the most bowl appearances of any other college team. My favorite team has just won the WEST with a 24-15 win over a ranked (#9 LSU team). We still have 3 games left in our schedule. Before you start making room in your trophy case for that National Championship trophy, you have one more mountain to climb. His name is Cody. My dear gator fan, we have a date in Dec. with you in Atlanta. See you there, Baby.

Let's not write off the Gators because of a couple of lackluster performances. They have won their last 19 games! That is what counts. To have an off week and still win is the mark of a champion. Anyone who does not think the SEC is the toughest conference in college football is smoking crack. UF, Georgia, Bama, Auburn, Tennessee, and LSU are top tier teams, year in and year out. And that's half the division. The only relatively easy wins are Vandy and sometimes Miss St. The rest of the division consists of dangerous and/or up and coming teams like Ole Miss, SC (featuring the ol' ball coach Steve Spurrier), Arkansas and Kentucky. Pac-10, who do they have for strength of schedule? USC but then it falls off. Maybe Washington and UCLA or one of the Arizona's, but not every year.
