Thomas leads K-State to 17-10 win over Kansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP)—Bill Snyder orchestrated a massive turnaround in his first stint at Kansas State’s coach, transforming a team with more losses than any other into a national title contender.

After a rough start, his second reclamation project seems to be going well, too.

Daniel Thomas ran for 185 yards and a touchdown, and the Wildcats harassed Todd Reesing into three turnovers to remain in control of the Big 12 North with a 17-10 victory over rival Kansas on Saturday.

Picked to finish at the bottom of the Big 12, Kansas State (6-4, 4-2) has won three straight games against Big 12 North opponents and is 5-0 in the Little Apple since Snyder returned to the stadium that bears his name.

The Wildcats stayed close against Kansas by forcing two fumbles and an interception by Reesing in the first half, then took over in the second behind Thomas’ bruising running to end a three-game losing streak to Kansas (5-4, 1-4) in the 107th version of the Sunflower Showdown.

Two games from the finish, Kansas State is inexplicably in position to reach its first Big 12 championship game since 2003.

“It’s about trying to build whatever it is you’re trying to build, kind of put one stone on top of the other,” said Snyder, who is 14-4 against Kansas. “Hopefully, over a period of time, it’ll take us where we’d like to be. This is a step.”

Reesing had another forgettable game a week after being benched, undone by early turnovers, occasionally wobbly passes and a few drops.

He finished with 241 yards on 27-of-41 passing, most of it on short throws between the 20s. Reesing was only able to get the Jayhawks into the end zone once and Jacob Branstetter missed 30-yard field goals in each half, giving Kansas its first its four-game skid since 2006.

“It goes without saying that when we lose to our rival, it hurts more than losing to someone else,” said Reesing, the fifth player in Big 12 history to throw for over 10,000 yards (10,204). “We enjoyed a pretty good stretch there for three years in a row. It’s the first time I’ve had a loss to K-State and that’s not what you want.”

The Jayhawks might have had a chance if they could have stopped Thomas in the third quarter.

The junior college transfer dashed for 40 yards up the middle to open the first drive of the second half, setting up his 5-yard touchdown run that put the Wildcats up 17-7. Thomas had 105 yards in the quarter, becoming the ninth player in Kansas State history to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season with 1,087

He later helped Kansas State close out the victory, teaming with Grant Gregory to grind out the final 5:20 after Branstetter hit a 46-yard field goal, giving the Wildcats their ninth straight home win over Kansas under Snyder.

“Nobody expected us to be where we are today,” Thomas said. “We were picked at the bottom of the Big 12 in every poll, but we knew what kind of team we were. We showed it today.”

Reesing was a Heisman Trophy candidate through the first five games, throwing for over 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns with three interceptions.

His season started to come unhinged with a strained groin against Colorado, leading to seven turnovers over the next three games. A three-year starter, Reesing was benched for the first time in the fourth quarter against Texas Tech last week after being sacked six times and failing to move the offense.

It didn’t get any better.

Reesing was dropped for a 12-yard loss on Kansas’ first drive after Darrell Stuckey returned the opening kickoff 67 yards, then threw a nowhere-near-his-receiver interception inside Kansas State’s 10-yard line on the second drive. He closed out the first quarter by doinking a side-armed shovel pass off Toben Opurum’s facemask.

Midway through the second quarter, Reesing finally found a rhythm.

Getting cornerback Joshua Moore to bite on a play-action fake, he threw a receiver screen to Dezmon Briscoe, who turned it into a 17-yard touchdown and a 7-3 lead.

The success was shortlived.

Reesing fumbled on the next drive, stripped from behind by Jeffrey Fitzgerald on a scramble inside the Kansas 25. Next drive, same thing: Trying to get extra yards on a scramble, Reesing had the ball jarred loose by a hard hit with 36 seconds left in the half.

Josh Cherry missed a 39-yard field goal after the first fumble, but Reesing and the Jayhawks weren’t so fortunate after the second. Gregory hit Lamark Brown on a 31-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats up 10-7.

“He was just playing hard,” coach Mark Mangino said of Reesing. “He is a great player. He gives us the best chance to win at that position. He tries hard, he gives you everything he has. I’m not going to be critical of a player who gives his heart and soul to the program.”

re-stull are u kidding me? in a defense to defense battle you pick snyder hands down? pelini has brought back the blackshirts, has them ranked as one of the top defenses in the country, not to mention 1st in the big 12. ksu is ranked last in the conf in passing. ya snyders ok but to say hes got a better defense is crazy talk. nu's offense is bad, but will be able to score more pts against their defense than they will in lincoln.

    J Hawk and Thomas

Those comments are typical KU excuses. Everything is woulda, shoulda, coulda. YOU LOST!!! dont blame it on a lame "groin" injury. Its D-1 football and players play hurt ALL year. Daniel Thomas has a very banged up shoulder that is going to require off season surgery. Yet, he goes out and dominates you over rated ChickenHawks!!!???

Win 10 or more games 2 years or more and then you can speak to other fans that have see and REAL program. Better yet, how bout KU wins 10+ games as many times as KSU has (6 since '95).

Thomas, the only way Kansas would have beaten Colorado would have been if the whole TEAM had shown up. A QB can really affect his teammates, but if others had stepped up, who knows?

Instead, Colorado reached up from the grave and smacked the Jayhawks into a spiral of decaying play and lackluster efforts. Maybe Kansas can turn itself around. But K-State played hard ALL DAY. They won as a result. Were the Jayhawks hoping for another "Futility Bowl"?

JHawk said, "KSU finally has a better record than KU in any sport and they act like they are the best in the nation."
JHawk, despite what you think, KU is NOTthe measuring rod for the Kansas State football program. Hold on... I'm still laughing about your rediculous comments. (sighs) I mean c'mon, KU has NEVER even won a Big 12 North title, let alone a Big 12 championship in football. KU hasn't even come close. I mean, good grief, you guys can't even beat Missouri. LOL!
Every football program goes through ups and downs. K-State had a 3 year stint under an underachieving coach. Now we are getting better again. And KU...? Well, they're going back into the basement where they belong. Say hello to Baylor for us. Ha ha ha ha ha!

KSU finally has a better record than KU in any sport and they act like they are the best in the nation. I guess if we had ahd as many failures in both BB and FB in the last few years, we would also be trying to make the most out of anything that comes our way. If we had a healthy Reesing, I doubt that you would be smiling today.

What difference does it make which team wins the Big 12 North? That team will then just get CRUSHED by Texas in the Big 12 championship game, anyway. Too bad this isn't "the old days" when you generally had to win AT LEAST 8 games in a season for any bowl representatives to come calling. 'Cause if it WERE then the ENTIRE Big 12 North would likely be shut out of bowl season, and only 2 or 3 teams from the Big 12 South would be going, either. I'm no fan of UT, but the Longhorns are this year's best Big 12 football team, BY FAR.

    Hey Daryl S:

Actually you do realize that we were actually good those first 5 games. Since reesing has been injured the hawks have gone 0-4. When he was healthy we were 5-0. Southern miss wasnt a bad team that we played and iowa state has shown they can win some games this year too already having 2 wins in the big 12. We would have beaten kstate and colorado and texas tech if it wasnt for reesing being injured. KU is fine and will be back to prominence next year when we have a starting qb who isnt injured. Its like u are unaware of this injury. This is no suprise to me that ku is playing bad. Our defense is actually a lot better than last years. Its the fact that we have no offense due to reesing's injuries. We have some 4 star and 3 star players coming in next year and have a better recruiting class than a lot of schools in the big 12. Actually we have the top recruiting class right now in the big 12 north so I think that KU will be good. This is a fluke year due to an injury but we will be back next year going 8-4 and 4-4 in the conference. That Georgia Tech game could be a loss to as i dont know how good they are yet. Southern miss is on there agian but i believe the hawks win by 8 points in that game. Okay well i dont want to do anymore talking. We will let next season show whose right.

Coming into this season, I had reason to think that KU would contend with Nebraska for the Big 12 North. Of course I didn't believe that we could run the table. I expected the Hawks to finish at best 5-3 in the conference. That being said, K-State has shown more grit and passion. Therefore, they are where they are. KU is not used to being the front-runner, and it has shown miserably these last few weeks. Sure, there is basketball to fall back on, but I would like to see KU make at least one appearance to the conference championship. It is almost laughable now that the Border Showdown at Arrowhead could be between 2 teams that won't even be playing in a bowl game this year. Can't wait to see how much money is lost!

Hey KU Fan, what has happened? Maybe you need to tell your AD to actually have a decent pre-season game or two. That way you might actually know your not good and you won't run your mouth so much when your 5-0. I read for 5 weeks how great KU football was and how the little blue birds where going to run the table in the Big 12 North. You talked way too much smack and now look like idiots. However, this is the perfect time to start running your mouth about basketball, the season hasn't started yet.

Bill Snyder is one hell of a great football coach, and the job he's done in his return to Kansas State is (thus far) as impressive as the job he did in his initial tour of duty there. But let's get real. K-State will lose at least one of the next two games and then get clobbered by Texas if they indeed play in the Big 12 chanpionship game. But they should get (and deserve!!) a respectable bowl berth. A very creditable turnaround for Kansas State this year.

"Congratulations K-State. This from a Jayhawk fan. Your team has made gigantic strides. This division absolutely stinks. At least SOMEBODY wants to win and improve. Iowa State is in 2nd place. Everybody (including me) had Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska finishing in the top 3. Doesn't look like it anymore!"

This is what I said after the Colorado win. Being a KU fan, I saw the signs that Bill Snyder had turned around the program enough to contend in the weak North division. Next week will be a cakewalk for K-State against Mizzou. Defense vs. defense against Nebraska. I favor Snyder over Pelini, hands down.

As for the Jayhawks, this is an absolutely devastating nightmare end for these players. I honestly don't know which direction we are headed in the future. I just hope that the kids in the wings see this as a learning curve for next year. I believed the hype in the off-season and at the start of the year, but we just don't have enough winning experience as a program to off-set other programs successes.

You mean they play football in Kansas? I thought that was just a rumor- or at least something to fill the time until basketball season.........................lol..................

Matters not- whoever wins the Big 12 North won't win the championship. Not with Texas as hot as they are.

Something goes wrong, and you see the roaches crawling out from the woodwork .... hey Eric P, there's nothing wrong with our coach. Mangino's done fine the last few seasons with a team that had done nothing for the prior 30+ years. This season is collapsing because Reesing, the same qb who lead us to our Orange Bowl win, suddenly lost his confidence (or maybe has an unannounced injury) and can't go into a game without giving up the abll several times. That's NOT the coach's fault. And if you start blaming Reesing now, that'll further show how incorrect you're criticisms are. He's having a bad second half to a season. Where were you when the Jayhawks had Terry Allen for a coach? Probably in your pj's.

" I have a lot of respect for Bill Snyder as a coach, but if K-State beats KU it will prove my point on poor coaching. IF a 70 year old Snyder can take a team (he didn't recruit) his first season back and beat you, well you have a problem. Snyder is a great coach but no one should be able to do that to a program in full swing."

This is what I posted the other day and feel strongly about it. This should have been Kansas's year but when you can pressure the QB, Have no running game, it makes it easy to defend! Also while you’re at it get a new strength and conditioning coach. If you lines were strong and conditioned better it would help. The bottom line is I hate to see this year lost for the senior group such as Meyer and Reesing that deserved much more. Don't blame them for lack of coaching.

KU football fans and recruits aren't going anywhere. While this season has been an utter disappointment, we've pulled in more talent the last two years than ever in the program's history. The future is bright. We'll have to shuffle around a few coaches, but next year is promising with an easier conference schedule. Congrats to KSU.
