Nesbitt scores in OT, No. 10 Ga. Tech survives

ATLANTA (AP)—Josh Nesbitt had already fumbled on one fourth-down play, gotten tripped up on another. He’d also been stuffed trying to run for a first down, and had yet another all-or-nothing play ruined by a dropped pass.

Yet there he was in overtime, standing on the sideline with coach Paul Johnson, insisting he could get the 18 inches or so Georgia Tech needed to keep alive its Atlantic Coast Conference title hopes.

“Are you sure?” Johnson asked his quarterback.

“Yeah,” Nesbitt replied. “No doubt.”

He was true to his word. No. 10 Georgia Tech pulled off a gutsy play on fourth down after failing four times during regulation, and Nesbitt ended it with a 3-yard touchdown run that pushed the Yellow Jackets to the cusp of the ACC championship game with a 30-27 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday.

Georgia Tech (9-1, 6-1) can wrap up the Coastal Division title by winning at Duke next weekend.

“The biggest game ever,” Nesbitt said.

Jonathan Dwyer rushed for a career-best 189 yards and went over 1,000 yards for the season, but it was Nesbitt and the guys on the defensive side who bailed out the Yellow Jackets at the end.

After stifling Wake Forest (4-6, 2-4) on the first possession of OT, forcing a field goal, Georgia Tech drove to the 5 where it faced fourth-and-less-than-a-yard. The Yellow Jackets initially tried to draw Wake offsides, but was forced to burn a timeout when that didn’t work.

Instead of sending on Scott Blair for a chip-shot field goal to extend the game, Johnson decided to go for the win right there. Even though his team was 0-for-4 on fourth down, the Yellow Jackets offense trotted back on the field.

If Johnson has any thoughts of kicking a field goal, Nesbitt persuaded him for one more chance.

“I could see the defense they were in,” the quarterback said. “I just knew in my heart I could get it.”

Nesbitt lowered his head and powered up the middle for a 2-yard gain. He scored on the very next play, bouncing off right tackle to go in standing before he flipped the ball high in the air and raised both arms in triumph. The entire team poured onto the field to celebrate underneath the goal posts.

“I felt like there was a monkey off my back,” Nesbitt said. “Nothing was going right for me the whole game. To get that run and score to end the game just felt great.”

Georgia Tech hasn’t won an outright conference championship since 1990, the year they shared the national championship with Colorado.

“I play to win,” Johnson said. “The kids work hard and put in a lot of time and effort. If we can’t make an inch there, we don’t deserve to win the game.”

It was another excruciating loss for the Demon Deacons, who must win their final two games to become eligible for its fourth straight bowl trip. Five of their defeats have come by a total of 13 points, two of them going to overtime.

“It’s frustrating,” said Riley Skinner, who passed for two touchdowns after sustaining a concussion in last week’s one-point loss to Miami. “We are right there in every game. We’re just not finishing it.”

Georgia Tech jumped to a 10-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game, but Wake Forest dominated the second quarter and led 17-10 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets kept making dumb penalties, contributing to all three Wake Forest touchdowns. The offense also had its share of mistakes, getting called three times for chop blocks as the officials seemed to pay close attention to the interior line after opponents complained of dirty blocking tactics.

Dwyer broke off a 59-yard TD run on Georgia Tech’s first offensive snap of the second half, tying the game at 17, and the defense took over from there. Wake Forest managed only one first down on its four possessions after the break, and Georgia Tech went ahead 24-17 when Nesbitt scored on a 12-yard run with 8:19 left in regulation.

But Skinner, who had only been cleared to play on Friday after he showed no lingering effects from the concussion, finally cranked up the Demon Deacons’ offense. Wake Forest drove 74 yards in seven plays, capped off by Skinner’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Devon Brown with 4:27 remaining.

After Georgia Tech was stopped again on fourth down, Wake Forest appeared to be driving into range for a winning field-goal attempt. But Skinner was sacked by Derrick Morgan on third-and-7 from the Georgia Tech 35, and Wake Forest decided to punt it away and settle for OT.

“I swiped at him,” Morgan said. “I was just about out of gas. … I had to muster up my strength and go out there and give it one more play, reach down deep within and get some strength and power.”

Skinner was 26 of 40 for 263 yards, carrying most of the load on offense as the Demon Deacons were held to 28 yards rushing. Georgia Tech had another huge running day out of its spread option, piling up 412 on 62 carries.

It almost wasn’t enough.

“We found a way to win in the end,” Johnson said, “and 30 is more than 27.”

I am a West Virginia fan, but I saw GT play WVU in the Gator bowl several years ago. Although GT lost I found myself really impressed with the poise of it's team and it's fans. Now with Paul Johnson as coach I have to say they got guts to go along with everything else. 4th and 1 and the game on the line and you go for it. How can you not admire that coach and team with that much confidence.

To the comment about a championship team does not have to go to overtime to win a game against a unrated opponent. All I got to say is the number 1 team in the country did not put up as many points as Tech did against a common opponent. Florida did not beat Vandy as badly as Tech did and Florida was playing at home.
Bottom line is Tech scores points and finds ways to win games they would of lost in the past.
This Tech team has accomplished things this year that has not been done in decades.
We beat Florida State in Florida, We beat Virgina in Virgina, We beat a top 5 team at home this year.
This Tech team is not like the Tech teams of the past. We have a great coach and a solid program this year. I just hope the voters will see that and give Tech the ranking they deserve this year.

This article by PAUL NEWBERRY AP sport writer is really biased. You sounds like Tech should have lost the game and overlooked the facts that
    (1) WF's lead in first half was built on Tech's penalties. Those penalties had given WF 11-point advantage in the 1st qtr. The 77 yd alone is equivalent to a TD drive, plus a Tech TD called off in the 2nd qtr.
(2)Tech had been leading WF mostly in the 2nd half, while the article seems to suggest Tech was trying to catch up and won by luck in OT. Unlike Miami-WF game last week, Miami scored in the final minute. It's unfortunate for WF to lose Miami last week, but not seems in this one.
(3)Because of those 4th down plays Tech gave up a few field-goal opportunities. Otherwise, Tech could win without an OT. The article only mentioned WF could have a field goal in 4th qtr.
As a sport writer and report you shouldn't be biased. Doesn't matter if yourself is a fan of Canes, Hookies, or GA. Your job wasn't to write sth like a fiction. LoL.

As a GT alumni, congratulate to GT football team with such a record this year. Paul Johnson is a good coach. Even though I could see Tech climb up in top 5 I feel we should care less about the rankings. Win or lose I hope Tech would always be the best team in ACC by Paul Johnson.

Who cares that it was Wake Forest...who cares that it was an overtime win against an inferior opponent...they found a way to win, every year teams that are better are faced with a lesser opponent and its the "great" teams that grit it out and find a way to win...way to go Jackets...what's the good word....TO HELL WITH GEORGIA

Absolutely, other than Clemson, Wake has been right there in every game this year. They're probably the best team with a losing record in the country and I knew Tech was in for a battle today. Tech played like champions today.

    Go Jackets!
    Go Navy!

The true measure of a team is when you are not having your best game and you are able to still win. If you watched the Wake /Miami game you would know that Wake would not be an easy win. GT is destined and determined to be winners this year. So far they have shown that they are...!!

    Go Tech!!

it is very difficult to get over Colorado 5th down win and to be honest Tech should of went for the win against NC that year instead of the tie. But it is over and there is always another season to do it right.
All I can say is Paul Johnson has BIG BALLS. Going for it on 4th down in overtime. Wow that could of caused us to lose the game...But what faith he had in the offense. Way to go Tech. That was a very hard game to win...why did Tech have to make it so close.
    Fear the Bee!!!

Paul B...........The Yellow Jackets played a powderpuff schedule that yr and did not crush everyone and still only took UPIs championship by 1 point over (you guessed it) Colorado (who had a much tougher schedule mind you). I agree that the Buffs had the 5th down but just like OSU should NOT have been national champs in 2001 due to the PHANTOM pass interference call against Miami.........what's done is done. Get over it they were not sole champions that yr.

Actually, I remember that very well.....and yes Georgia Tech was the only undefeated team that year....11-0-1.....The tied 13-13 with the Tar Heels.....before the times of Overtime. In the Game against Colorado and Notre Dame was terrible....Colorado won the game 10-9, and actually Notre had won the game, but the "Rocket" Ismail was called back on a clip and that ended the game for Notre Dame giving the game to Colorado...."the "Rocket" Ismail returned a punt for 92 yards in for a touchdown, but as stated the play was called back on a clipping penalty"....So I do agree....GA Tech was the sole champion that year....and Colorado was second.

Go who....Very tough and gutsy moved by Coach Paul Johnson, but it gave them the chance to set up for the win and they won. Go Yellow Jackets....good job on pulling the win out. I will give credit to Wake for almost handing Miami a loss, and you all did very well against GA Tech. So what if the Canes beat us...we beat Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech beat the Canes....just another one of those days...anything can happen in the ACC. Go Jackets!!!!!!!!!

Will the historians stop saying that Georgia Tech "shared" the national championship in 1990? Tech was the only unbeaten (one tie) team in the nation - Colorado had one loss and really lost two games - if you remember the infamous "fifth and goal" game where the referees lost track of the downs and gave Colorado a fifth down to score the "winning" touchdown.

Georiga Tech - THE national champions of 1990
