Spiller, Clemson take control of ACC Atlantic

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP)—C.J. Spiller couldn’t help himself, and after his latest record-setting performance he probably deserved to tout himself as a Heisman Trophy contender.

At the end of Spiller’s high-stepping, 5-yard touchdown run, Clemson’s star tailback flashed a quick Heisman pose.

“A baby, a mini one,” he finally admitted Saturday night.

Spiller had a career-high 165 yards rushing and his 20th touchdown of at least 50 yards to lead the Tigers closer to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game in a 40-24 victory over Florida State.

It was Clemson’s fourth straight victory after starting 2-3 and a chance for Spiller to enhance his rising Heisman hopes.

The usually humble Spiller tried at first to deny the bit of showboating at the end of perhaps Clemson’s biggest victory in four seasons.

“All the pose you’ll see is if I’m hopefully in New York and holding up the trophy,” he said.

He has a shot if he keeps posting numbers like this. Along with his rushing TD, Spiller had a 58-yard scoring catch and finished with 312 all-purpose yards, surpassing the school record of 310 set two games ago in a 40-37 overtime win at Miami.

“I doubt if anybody is playing better than him in the country,” Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said.

A bigger stage is in Spiller and the Tigers’ reach.

Clemson (6-3, 4-2 ACC) can take the ACC’s Atlantic Division with victories over North Carolina State and Virginia the next two weeks and advance to the league’s title game for the first time.

A win there and Clemson is off to the Orange Bowl with its first ACC title since 1991.

For Florida State (4-5, 2-4), it was the fifth loss to Clemson in the past seven meetings—and will could revive the debate over Bowden’s future with a program he brought to two national championships the last 33 years.

Bowden, who turns 80 on Sunday, said the game came down to Spiller and Seminoles errors.

Christian Ponder, the ACC’s passing leader, missed two days of practice with sore ribs and threw four interceptions after having only three all year.

And a Seminoles defense that hoped to send retiring coordinator Mickey Andrews off with a flourish, failed to contain the Tigers after holding a 17-6 lead.

Bowden said his team was poised for three quarters. “Then, of course, the dam broke,” he said.

The Seminoles’ hopes for a division title are gone now after the first Clemson-Florida State game in Death Valley that did not match Bowden against his son, Tommy, in 10 years.

Fans rushed Frank Howard Field with a sense Clemson and coach Dabo Swinney, who took over for Tommy Bowden during last season, were closing in on a championship goal.

Spiller become the school’s all-time pass catcher among running backs and he and track partner, receiver Jacoby Ford, broke an NCAA mark for all-purpose yardage by teammates, bettering the 10,253 yards of Marshall Faulk and Darnay Scott of San Diego State from 1991-93.

“Who wouldn’t want him on their team?” Clemson offensive coordinator Billy Napier said of Spiller.

After Dwayne Allen’s 17-yard catch put Clemson ahead 6-3—Richard Jackson missed the team’s first extra point since the 2006 Music City Bowl—Ponder answered right back with a 49-yard scoring throw to Lonnie Pryor less than two minutes later.

Then the Seminoles defense got into the act, Jamie Robinson returning a Kyle Parker interception 52 yards to go up 17-6.

The fireworks slowed down in the second, largely thanks to mistake from both offenses.

Ponder threw a pair of picks after entering with three.

Clemson tightened the game, taking advantage of Chris Thompson’s fumble in his own territory. Two plays later, Parker found a streaking Xavier Dye across the middle of the field who finished off a 43-yard touchdown.

Spiller converted the first 2-point conversion of his career to cut the Seminoles lead to 17-14.

Spiller’s 45-yard run late in the second half looked like it might bring Clemson more points. However, the Tigers came up empty after a first-and-goal from the 1.

Florida State took the lead for the last time, 24-21, when Jermaine Thomas closed a 16-play drive with a 1-yard TD run.

That’s when the Tigers showed their newfound poise.

“We taught these guys to be a lot tougher,” Swinney said. “During the fourth quarter, we used a lot of mental toughness to overcome the pressures of the game.”

It doesn’t hurt to have a guy like Spiller, too.

#25: Never said I was the pres of Free Shoes University. I was just asking why they are keeping him?

You comment about being a BCS buster shows how far the old man has let the team fall. Back in the 90's they were expected to be in the title hunt.

I didn't suggest he walk away. Stick around and provide as much support as you can to the school and the team, but as coach he isn't cutting it and the coach in waiting and multiple assistant head coaches are just mucking things up with too many chiefs and not enough indians. Where he can provide benefits is to show up at fundraising and alumni events. The new coach may even have him come in and give a pep talk to the team once in a while. If he goes out gracefully, he can do these things and still be of great value. A few more 5-7 seasons and he will be remembered as a sad has been who didn't know when to hand over the reigns.

Grampa may really want to drive the car and he may try real hard, but if he's a danger to everyone on the road, you need to take the keys away.

Why don't they just take the senile old man to a high school game, let him stand on the sideline and tell him he's coaching FSU.

You wouldn't use a surgeon because he used to be good before he developed a bad palsy, but it's OK to keep coach who clearly has no idea what's going on and a coaching staff in total disarray.

Being from South Carolina and living in Florida the last 6 years I love how before every FSU Clemson game or Miami Clemson game that the teams from florida are gonna whip us. Wake up and realize you may win (which you haven't lately) but it wont be a whipping. Miami has not whipped up since they joined the ACC. FSU whipped us in the early 90's but that is past history. Great Win TIgers and good luck the rest of the season.

It was an ok game for about 3 quarters before the Noles just fell apart. But it did not help either that Jack Childers hates FSU (watch the games in the past few seasons he has been the ref in when FSU is playing). I seen way to many holding calls not get called on both teams but more on Clemson.

Ponder was effected by not practicing for the most part this week and it showed. And CJ is just to dadgum good to contain for to long. However the drop by Jacoby Ford, in I think the 3rd quarter, was honestly a shocker to me.

And I agree CJ should get the Heisman. However that would mean he would not want to go to the NFL either. (Heisman curse lol) But he has had a great college career at Clemson along with Ford and Davis.

Awesome win for Clemson, even with all their mistakes. Goes to show that they're finally got some mental toughness. If this game was played last year under the old coaching regime, Clemson would have folded up in the 1st half and let the Noles have it

Congratulations to all of you Clemson Tigers & fans! I hope you go all the way and achieve a worthy shot at the national championship. I'm a Seminole grad, a U.S.C. fan (except while Spurrier is there), but hey, being from Sumter must make us like distant cousins! I agree with 'Julie' (#9 below) that its time for Bobby Bowden to retire...THIS year! No more distracting and controversial 'one more year' contracts. If he won't retire gracefully, fire his pompous ars*! Our University is much more important than Bobby's ego and his obstinate refusal to admit his increasing failings at his job is casting dispersions upon all of us. Don't diminish your deserved stature any further, Coach B., please retire now and let the team have a new direction with Coach Fisher.

Ponder is not the best QB in florida, but he is the best PASSER in florida. And spiller is the best big play maker in the COUNTRY. He will win the hiesman if Clemson wins the ACC title game. If they dont, then he probably has no shot. Kinda sux for him that that is what it comes down to.

Good victory for the tigers. Spiller over 300 total yards and playing the entire fourth quarter hurt is one of those moments that people will remember. If he is not hurt and I hope Spiller is ok and puts up similar numbers on NC State, Virginia, Carolina, and then potentially Ga Tech, He should be seriously considered for the heisman in a year where no one is a clear cut favorite.

No bowl this year for FSU they will finish 5-7 losing to Wake and Fla. As bad as it has been this year I think they will be strong next season. The offense will return intact, obvious help needed on D but I bet they find it. The Miami loss took alot out of this team. Ponder is the best QB in the State of Florida and will be better next season. Early prediciton the Noles win 10 games next year and Ponder is a Heismen finalist.

The SEC is a little better in football than the SEC, not by much. The ACC is much better in basketball than the SEC. That is more certain. The SEC totally sucks in roundball, and is a bit overrated in football. They have 2 good teams. That does not a conference make.

Both teams are bad. The conference is bad, and jimbo could have called a air strike and a flock of F-22 fighter jets would not have changed that game. FSU has no defense what so ever and I think Ponder is the real deal at QB. The problem is not that Spiller is not a great player, the problem is that he plays for Clemson. He should have went to Florida and maybe that would have happened for him.

to me, if it was a fair system, no question that CJ should win the Heisman, but since it is a quarterback contest, he will have to do something even more incredible the next 3 games. I have never seen a team make so many stupid mistakes and still dominate a pretty good team. Clemson is so schizo, but this could turn out to be a very good year, and propel back towards a hunt for a national championship in the next couple of years. No way we could keep CJ for one more year?

FSU"s defense played tough but Fisher's play-calling cost the Noles another one tonight. Maybe the best thing for Florida State will be when Fisher finally takes over as head coach, the Noles will get another offensive coordinator.
