Temple win seventh straight, 34-32 over Miami

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Temple keeps finding ways to win.

Long the poster program for football futility, the Owls are on their longest winning streak in 36 years and talking about a bowl game.

Take notice, Philly. There’s another football team in town that has a conference championship in sight.

Bernard Pierce ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns, and Brandon McManus kicked an 18-yard field goal with 3 seconds left to give Temple a 34-32 victory over Miami of Ohio on Thursday night.

“Three years ago, our team couldn’t win these games, and if they did it was an anomaly,” coach Al Golden said. “Now the team has some toughness, some mental toughness and character.”

The Owls (7-2, 5-0 Mid-American) won their seventh straight game and are on their longest winning streak since they won the final eight games of the 1973 season.

Temple blew leads of 21-3 and 31-13 against the RedHawks (1-9, 1-5). McManus bailed out the Owls with their biggest kick of the season.

The Owls were already bowl eligible and they now have the MAC title game in sight. To put the winning streak in perspective, the Owls won seven games total from 2002-05.

The Owls opened the 1974 season with six straight victories and finished the 1970s with three straight bowl games. Temple then sunk into three decades of a deep football funk that made it one of the worst programs around.

No more.

The Owls showed some grit on the final drive after blowing the huge leads.

Zack Dysert threw for 426 yards and three touchdown passes for the RedHawks (1-9, 1-5). Dysert tossed TD passes of 25 and 14 yards in the fourth quarter to slice the deficit to five at 31-26.

Dysert rushed for the first down on a crucial fourth-and-1 at Temple’s 2 on the final drive. Thomas Merriweather capped the comeback with the short TD run to make it 32-31. The 2-point conversion failed.

Golden, a former Penn State captain, needed only four seasons to turn a a demoralized program into conference contenders. Once an automatic “W” on any team’s schedule, the Owls are on track for their first bowl game since 1979.

The Owls haven’t had a winning record since they went 7-4 in 1990.

Temple received one point this week in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for the first time since Dec. 2, 1990, the final regular-season poll.

“We’re in the hunt, but we’ve got a lot of football left,” Golden said.

Temple’s sob story—kicked out of the Big East, winless seasons—has been recounted countless times.

Pierce is among the Owls trying to write a new story in Temple’s history. He already set a Temple record for yards rushing (1,211) and touchdowns by a freshman. He now has six 100-yard rushing games this season.

Pierce had TD runs of 1 and 7 yards in the first half, then capped a 15-carry third quarter with a 14-yard score that made it 31-13.

His 14 rushing touchdowns put Pierce one shy of the single-season rushing record held by Paul Palmer (1986) and Walter Washington (2004).

“I expected to do good, but I didn’t think I was going to do as good,” Pierce said. “I didn’t know I was going to have a good line like I did. That always helps, having a 300-pound line straight across ahead of you.”

Golden benched starting quarterback Vaughn Charlton for Chester Stewart. Charlton started every game, but had only completed 51 percent of his passes and threw seven interceptions.

Charlton still made an impact, scoring on a fake field goal on fourth-and-1 late in the first quarter for a 14-3 lead.

With Pierce carrying the load, Stewart wasn’t asked to do much and threw for 143 yards.

“We don’t need a guy who throws for 300 yards when we’re rushing for a whole bunch,” Golden said.

Golden has done a masterful job with the rebuilding project on the field. He has miles to go to spark massive interest in a city that has never fallen in love with college football. Perhaps suffering from a World Series hangover with the Phillies loss to the New York Yankees, only a few thousand fans showed up on a brisk night perfect for football.

The RedHawks snapped a 13-game losing streak last week with a win over Toledo.

“There are always other opportunities to take in the game and we need to make sure that we take advantage of every opportunity that is presented to us,” RedHawks coach Michael Haywood said.

While Temple has never really been a powerhouse football program, we have had our moments in our history. Believe it or not, the past 20 years was an aberration I hope we can finally put behind us. We played in the first Sugar Bowl and Pop Warner was one of our coaches. Sounds like football history to me that needs to be played up the way Rutgers plays up their history as being one of the teams to play the first college football game. All I have wanted over these past two decades was for our program to be competitive again. Once you become competitive, good things start to come your way. Look at Navy. Six straight bowl games after decades of sub-mediocrity. At last we can go Bowling again. And I hope it's the beginning of a new trend.

Yeah, Temple lost to Villanova. Not dissing 'Nova, but that looks bad. That being said ... this is a different Temple team now. If Temple gets to the MAC Championship, win or lose they've got a bowl game. What a turnaround from a few years ago ...

"strength, mid-major basketball and take the rest of the sports year off. A bowl game, wow, way to go Temple. If there weren't 45 bowls, you wouldn't get a sniff."

And yet look where we sit in the BCS rankings: http://cfn.scout.com/a.z?s=451&p=2&c=557949

I guess you feel the same way about Nebraska, eh?

William B, you are a tool. Keep talking like that and pretty soon it'll be likely that Temple, Central Michigan, N. Illinois, or any other MAC school will be beating on your team; which you conveniently failed to mention. I'm assuming that you are from NY with your "Phillies suck" comment, must suck having to rely on Syracuse who "can't sniff" a bowl game. Good on Temple, way to go, keep the streak, until the MAC Championship. As a CMU Alum I'll be going crazy for the Chips in the MAC Championship, but it'll be nice to beat ya haha (just a little good natured ribbing) not exactly OSU/MI here. As far as Temple having no trouble with CMU at all, ummmm pretty sure that's what Sparty said and look what happened. By the way Miller; how did you see them play in Illinois this year? They don't play N Illinois until NOV 27 and that's at home. Just asking but you might want to check your stats before trashing another team. Anyway, I hope the MAC continues to knock off the big boys, gives them good exposure and really opens up recruiting.

Definitely I want a play-off system. It works for basketball. In fact it is more entertaining to watch, with the Cinderella teams keeping the top teams on their toes. But then with college football it is all about those in control are those who make the big bucks.

In my many years of watching football (yes I am old!) I have seen a lot. I have often seen with my team and others that they often play at the level of their opponents. So a really good team may not play well against a bad team and vice-versa.

Let's keep the fun in sports. Quit with the name-calling and let the fans be happy with their teams when they win. I am enjoying my Iowa Hawkeyes game by game, regardless what the nasty bloggers say.

Flukeytown: Bowl matchups are mostly predetermined by contract. The MAC champ gets the Motor City Bowl; the runnerup gets either the GMAC Bowl or the International Bowl with the next best MAC team getting one or the other. Depending on how the other conferences fare during the regular season, a fourth MAC team often gets a bowl. Sometimes the MAC champ gets to chose which bowl they want to play in. Last year Central Michigan was the runnerup and played in the Motor City Bowl, losing to Florida Atlantic, 24-21. Northern Illinois received a bid and played in the Independence Bowl and lost to Louisiana Tech, 17-10. Western Michigan played Rice in the Texas Bowl and lost, 38-14. Buffalo, the MAC champ, played Connecticut in the International Bowl and lost, 38-20. Ball State played Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl and lost, 45-13.

Hopefully, this year will be better for the MAC when bowl season rolls around.

Temple and Central Michigan will make a great MAC title game. Both will get bowls, no matter outcome of the title game.

For all you who don't follow ALL of D-1AA (FBS), the MAC has been on a steady rise for the past decade. Before the turn of the century, every team in a BCS conference could count on at least one win a season by scheduling anybody from the MAC. Now MAC teams regularly defeat the lesser schools in those conferences and give the next tier a loss now and then. It's only a matter of time before MAC schools knock off a so-called ranked opponent. Let us not forget that Northern Illinois knocked off Purdue in West Lafayette and Central Michigan beat Michigan State in East Lansing. The more television exposure the MAC gets, the more quality athletes they get into their programs. A lot more kids are giving them serious looks during recruiting season. They're seeing a lot of MAC grads playing in the NFL, and that makes a difference when it comes time to commit.

Temple's loss to Villanova? Football is a game of emotion, for those of you who have never played or coached the game. Adrenalin can turn an average kid into a superstar for one game. It can turn a whole team into a champion for one game. I've seen it happen first hand as a coach and as a player. I sucked as a player, but I still had my one great game. Villanova is a quality D-1AA team, and they got up for crosstown rival Temple and came away with a win just like Boise State did against Oregon the first week of the season. Look what happened to Michigan a few years back when Appy State knocked them off in Ann Arbor. Michigan finished 9-4 that year. It happens.

Owls and Chips in the MAC title game. Don't miss it. It's gonna be a doozie!

i attended the temple/psu game this year. Yes, PSU won, but Temple played a good game. And to say they will get waxed by real teams? I guess NAVY isn't a real team? And Temple should be 8-1. that first lost to villanova was sad but i'd like to see them play the cats again... They didn't have there feet set or a running game like they have now.

A bowl game, wow, way to go Temple. If there weren't 45 bowls, you wouldn't get a sniff. Go back to your hole. BTW, nice job Phillies. You suck too.

super cold night ... cold D but Zack Dysert really has been throwing the ball the past few weeks ... but Temple turned it on again towards the end ... surprised they stopped the passing game after the third quater ... it definitely hurt them in the forth ... they need to push the play action more as they did in the last few plays of the game to move them in field goal range ... should be interesting how they deal with their last 2 games with Kent St and Ohio both who are playing well in the MAC

Are you kidding me.....this team playing against a 1-7 team..w/a 3 score lead blows it. They are going to get crushed when they play a REAL team. What did the offense and defense decide to start the scrubs in the 4th quarter and let the pitiful redhawks score 19 unanswered. This is not a game or win worth praising, but an omen that though, this team may no longer be in the cellar. They have a long way to go before they are a team that can contend. And, yes Central Michigan is going to wax temple ass up and down the field!
