Rutgers stuns UConn 28-24 in final seconds

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)—On a day Connecticut honored slain teammate Jasper Howard, one of his best friends won the game for Rutgers.

Tim Brown, who grew up with Howard in Miami, scored on an 81-yard touchdown pass from Tom Savage with 22 seconds left to give the Scarlet Knights a 28-24 victory over the Huskies in UConn’s first home game since Howard was stabbed to death.

“I just went out there and played that game for my friend,” Brown said. “He was a special guy to me and I just went out there and dedicated that game to him.”

Connecticut (4-4, 1-3 Big East) scored to take a 24-21 lead with 38 seconds left and the crowd was roaring, when Brown got behind cornerback Robert McClain and outraced the entire UConn secondary to the end zone.

Howard, Brown said, might have had the speed to catch him.

“We was ready to play (each other),” he said “It would have been a great game for me if I’d had my other friend on the other side.”

There were numerous tributes to Howard before the game and fans lined up three-deep to greet the Huskies as they made their way into the stadium wearing T-shirts with his number “6” on it.

Howard was killed outside a school dance on Oct. 18. Since the Huskies have played twice and taken two tough losses.

Last week, UConn lost 28-24 at West Virginia when Noel Devine broke a 56-yard touchdown run with 2:10 left in the game. The Huskies’ four losses are by a total of 13 points.

“Could we be (undefeated)? Yeah, but the reality of it is that we’re 4-4,” coach Randy Edsall said. “And the reality of it is, we’ve got to understand how to finish these games off and make the plays at the end in order to win.”

Savage, the freshman quarterback, threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns for Rutgers (6-2, 1-2) in his first Big East road game. But he gave all the credit to Brown, who finished with 162 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

“He made one of the best plays you could probably make in college football,” Savage said. “I know he was down all week, and he was down during the game, but he just made the play and I’m sure Jazz is proud of him.”

Backup quarterback Zach Frazer, who entered the game in the first quarter after Cody Endres went down with an injury to his left shoulder, threw for 333 yards and a touchdown for UConn. He led the Huskies on two fourth-quarter touchdown drives after they trailed 21-10.

UConn’s Marcus Easley cut the lead to 21-17 when he caught a pass over the middle, bounced off linebacker Ryan D’Imperio and went in for a 32-yard touchdown with just over 10 minutes left.

The Huskies tried an unorthodox 2-point conversion, hitting tackle Mike Ryan on what was supposed to be a lateral screen. The 320-pound lineman dove into the end zone, stretching the ball over the left pylon. But Ryan was ruled an ineligible receiver, and UConn had to settle for a kick after the penalty.

Connecticut got the ball back for a final time with about 3 1/2 minutes left. A 31-yard diving catch by Michael Smith got the ball into Rutgers’ territory, and a 32-yard catch by Kashif Moore on fourth down got the Huskies into the red zone. When Jordan Todman ran it in from 2 yards out on another fourth down, the home crowd erupted, thinking the Huskies had completed the comeback.

Edsall said Endres is likely done for the season. He is scheduled to have surgery on Sunday.

Frazer, who lost the starting job after he suffered a knee injury in the second game of the season, completed 21 of 46 passes, but also threw three interceptions.

The game started with the stadium buzzing and the UConn crowd energetic on an emotional day for the school.

A lot of that energy seemed to drain from the building after Delvin McCourty took the opening kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown for Rutgers.

A week ago, West Virginia’s Tavon Austin went 98 yards for a score with the opening kick.

Joe Lefeged’s interception set up a seven-play, 81-yard Rutgers drive that ended with Brown’s first touchdown catch, a 37-yarder.

Robby Frey brought the crowd back into the game by taking the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, cutting across the field behind the blocking of Todman and diving into the end zone.

But UConn senior cornerback Robert McClain limped off the field late in the second quarter, leaving the Huskies with three redshirt freshmen in the secondary.

Savage took advantage, finding Mark Harrison over the middle for a 20-yard touchdown that made it 21-10 at the half. McClain returned in the second half.

UConn gamely came back, but for the second consecutive week a victory the Huskies wanted so badly wasn’t to be.

“I don’t know,” he said. “We’ll just keep fighting. That’s all I know to do.”

xbaseballx. You took my comment the wrong way and I just noticed I typed the wrong #. I was supposed to type 13. Comment number 13 said that UConn should stop playing for Jazz because they are embarassing just because they lost a game. That is when I said that it is amazing that they could even play a game this soon after a terrible and sad result of a stabbing. What I meant to say was that as long has they give it 110% show they are trying (part of knowing they are trying is by seeing stats) then it should not matter if they win, just as long as they try there hardest. Number 13 said they were playing for a fallen teamate and they blow it at the last minute and that they should stop playing for Jazz because it is embarassing and that is just terrible. Read it and let me know if you understand what I am saying. If you dont understand, maybe I am just wording it wrong then. It is NUMBER 13, NOT 14!

Yea Rix;.great point, too bad you can't back it up...

    why???

well only one Big East school has the stones to play a Big 10 team and the 'Cuse is 1-2 vs the Big 10 so I would stick to the facts and that says the Big East is not so big...stick to teams in the MAC, WAC and Sun Belt...or someone else in your crappy conference that way you can keep teams in the top 25.

    Both teams are terrible...

#4 - The Big East is terrible...they should not have a team in the Top 25 now (much less the pre-season). They play weak schedules; SE Missouri State, Youngstown St., Buffalo, Liberty, Marshall, then they play each other...give me a break. I put them in a class with the MAC. Any Big East school that plays a ranked team outside the Big East loses. Ohh yea only Syracuse played anyone outside the Big East that's ranked (and yes they lost). The entire Big East should move to Division 1AA

#21 - Learn to spell. You were not a field level and nobody was going to catch Brown. The only way he was not going to make it to the end zone was if he tripped. Stop making up stories about who could catch him growing up -- Brown never said that and you have no idea what happened while they were growing up.

I feel bad for young Mr. Howard. My condolences to his family and friends.

But as far as UConn goes- the school can burn. They whored out the name of the athletic complex to a certain Robert Burton and family. Robert Burton is the majority owner of Cenveo, a soon-to be-bankrupt printing company. Burton has used the company as his personal bank account for years now, and has cost thousands of Americans their jobs. Burton's son played at UConn a few years back. UConn should be ashamed to have this person's name on ANY of their facilities, and until Burton's name is wiped from the facility they deserve NO support of any kind! Even though I know this will fall on deaf ears, I heartily encourage anyone interested to research the name and see if you agree.

    Rest in peace young man.

#20, No way the safety could have caught Brown. I was at field level near the play and there was too much space for him to make up on Brown. And Brown (Jazzes best friend by the way) was one of the fasted guys on the field. Brown even said that if Jazz was on the field against him, he may not have made it to the end zone. Jazz was the only one who could ever catch him when they were growing up together. Great win for RU. Big bummer for UConn. Big East has played real good football this year. RU's offense is starting to see the emergence of a QB that could really take the program places. This should help open up their run game a bit, too.

18 cody. you missed the point, completely. stats? you think it is about stats these kids play for? if playing for a fallen teammate, it is not stats. it is love. please, understand, stats mean NOTHING. the fact they show up in the weight room, on the field, on game day, that is what they show up for. not for themselves, but for what truly matters. and do you know what i saw watching the game today? i saw a safety give up on catching brown. he could have dove, he could have tried; instead, he was winded and gave up. that is where i lost the RESPECT that uconn deserved. it is a tragedy, what happened; but they must earn the respect and the love that it takes to allow them to play for jazz.

#14 Oh yeah it is amazing that they are even playing and then they stick right with the opponent. That shows heart. They dont have to win, give it 110% and put up some stats is all they need to do. You just want perfection, well people want it out of you and i bet ya they are not getting it or else you would find something better to say

#13 uconn ,, the only thing aprevent d- does is prevent a team from winning on any level-- that is why it is preached that you need to play 60 minutes at least - not 59:59 or less at any time. even in peewee leagues or pickup games amongst friends. so when i see it getting played as so often it is - i am totally baffled that coaches and their staffs utilie it - as to me it means they quit playing and tried thinking and we all know how that goes in sports

a solemn year indeed at UCONN. i watched them last week and was blown away with the loss they endured on the field after their significant loss off the field. i was stunned to see how that went, so as i was watching the game today and the huskies came back in teh 4th to take a lead with only 38 sekunden remaining - i thought man , i sure hope this is a win for them - even though rutgers has an explosive offense. then with 22 seconds left rutgers scored and the facial expressions i saw left me feeling hollow again. hold your heads up, and be proud - you are a good team and an even better community. just the effort you are giving and the way you are rallying around each other for support speaks highly of you -- you deserve nothung but praise good lick to all of you on and off the playing arena

I don't know that UCONN should have been stunned - Rutgers lead the whole game until that last minute TD. RU will be bowl bound again this year!! There are still tough teams on RU's schedule, but their two losses came to teams that are ranked #5 and #16 going into this weekend.

It was such a snub that no Big East team was ranked in the pre-season Top 25, and now they have three in the Top 20 with Rutgers and USF at 6-2 [same record as West VA at #20]. I love watching the action in SEC football, and the writers show lots of love to the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-10 teams - but give the BIG EAST it's due, there's some great football being played in the Big East.
