NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Turns out Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has a few more tricks in his offense than just the triple option.

Josh Nesbitt ran for two touchdowns and threw for two scores, Jonathan Dwyer ran for a career-high 186 yards rushing with three TDs, and No. 11 Georgia Tech rallied to beat Vanderbilt 56-31 Saturday night.

The Yellow Jackets ran less triple-option than usual.

“They decided they were going to take that away, and they did. We tried to play with our auxiliary stuff, and it worked out well,” Johnson said.

Did it ever.

The Yellow Jackets (8-1) rolled up a season-high 597 yards total offense against a Vanderbilt defense that was ranked 34th nationally, giving up 320 yards per game. They wore Vanderbilt out, holding the ball for nearly 40 minutes and rolling up 404 yards rushing.

Dwyer had 22 carries and matched his career-best in touchdowns.

“We have a lot of weapons on the offense so each and every week somebody has a breakout game,” Dwyer said.

The Yellow Jackets improved on their best start since winning a national title in 1990 by winning their sixth straight for their longest winning streak since 2000. They also won a fourth road game this season, which they hadn’t done since 2000.

Vanderbilt (2-7) lost both its fifth straight and any faint hopes of the first back-to-back bowl berth in school history. Coach Bobby Johnson has seen Paul Johnson’s offense for years, dating back to their days coaching against each other in the Southern Conference.

“There is always an edge. You don’t feel good about what you’re doing to stop them. We tell our players if you give them a chance, they’ll burn you. They made a good play on a previous option, and they took advantage of us. That’s the pressure that good offense puts on you,” the Vandy coach said.

The Commodores made it exciting, leading 31-28 late in the third quarter.

Dwyer helped the Yellow Jackets pull away. He scored his second and third TDs on a pair of 3-yard runs 40 seconds apart at the end of the third quarter to put Georgia Tech up 42-31. His third TD was set up by Georgia Tech’s second recovered fumble on defense.

“The defense got us fired up,” Nesbitt said. “That was the spark we were looking for the whole game, and we really didn’t make any adjustments.”

Georgia Tech was coming off a dominant performance at Virginia to grab sole possession of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division.

Nesbitt scored the first two TDs for Georgia Tech, capping the opening drive with a 4-yard run and opening the second quarter with a 1-yard plunge. His second TD was the first of 21 straight points as Georgia Tech grabbed a 28-14 lead before halftime. Nesbitt connected with Demaryius Thomas on a 35-yard TD pass, and Dwyer ran for a 13-yard TD.

Later, Nesbitt helped polish the victory off with a perfect pass to Embry Peeples that went for 87 yards and a 49-31 lead. Nesbitt finished 6 of 13 for 193 yards, with six carries for 56 yards before being replaced midway through the fourth.

Roddy Jones also added a 15-yard TD run.

It was the most points Vandy has allowed since a 56-30 loss to Kentucky in 2001. The loss also spoiled what had been Vanderbilt’s best offensive performance since a 36-17 win over Rice on Sept. 26.

The Commodores hadn’t scored more than 10 in any Southeastern Conference game, but a pair of freshmen sparked Vandy even as it lost starting quarterback Larry Smith to a pulled left hamstring in the first quarter.

Warren Norman caught an 11-yard TD pass to cap the opening drive, and he returned a kickoff 80 yards for his second straight game with a kickoff return for a TD and his third this season—a school first. He also joined Willie Gault as the only SEC players with three kickoff returns for TDs in a single season. Gault did it for Tennessee in 1980.

Zac Stacy, who had scored on a 3-yard TD run in the first, ran 62 yards to tie the game at 28 just before halftime.

But the Commodores had to settle for a field goal to open the third, and that was the last points they could manage.

I am not saying this to be mean to GT, because I like Paul Johnson and I love the option, but the flexbone Johnson runs is just a glorified wishbone and that particular style of option is designed to eatup TIME and play to THE defense.... but you have got to have a shutdown defense WHEN they are on the field. If not you are in trouble. Until Johnson gets enough talent to shutdown teams on defense he will not win a mythical national champioship. The offense will allow him not have to have alot of depth on defense since they WON'T be on the field that long, but they have got to shutdown teams when they are on the field. Johnson needs to start recruiting for better defensive players and he will be OK. So the offense gets all the press, but it is the defense at GT fans you need to worry about, not the offense. {Sorry I had to repost, but kept getting interrupted before I could finsh}.

GT held the ball almost 20 minutes more than Vandy, and Vandy had 3 turnovers and 67 yards in penalties and they still scored 31 POINTS.... If I were GT I wouldn't be worried about offense as much as I would my defense.!!!!! GT needs a defense. Vandy has a hard enough time scoring in practice against themselves.

Hello, LSU stopped Georgia Tech's offense last year in a bowl game. Also, Miami stopped it. So, GA Tech offense can run into problems in January.

USC has two losses now. They are not a good team. They will drop to around 15. tech will be in the top 10. Iowa is the overrated joke. Big 10 officials had to give them the Ind game yesterday.

No worry at all. We dominated them. Football is two halves last time I checked. 597 yards of offense. We won by 25 and some of you act like it was close. Whatever. I seem to recall most nat champs winning by having an unstoppable offense. Remember Neb and Fla in the 90's. Usc and Texas this decade.

Worried when we are winning. Not a chance. Fans that are worried are the ones getting blown out by teams they used to compete against.

    8. Posted by icantmakeyouthink Sun - Sounds logical but because of the BCS computers and their failure to recognize schools outside of the Big Money Six (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10, Big East and SEC) Boise State, TCU and Cincinatti will not get the chance to play in the Title game! And, since Boise State beat Oregon, then the BCS suits couldn't justify letting Oregon in either. Even a 1 loss SEC team would play in the BCS Title game before Oregon. Odds on favorites right now are Texas VS Alabama or Florida.

One game at a time friends, one game at a time! The polls mean VERY little right now. Tech still has two more TOUGH ACC games to play. Let's hope they are thinking more about Wake than the stupid BCS polls.

    GO JACKETS!

USC falling to just #10?? No way! They looked horrible against Oregon, so I say cut them no slack! They go down to #14 or thereabouts. That loss at Washington has to come back into play now, so it appears that the Trojans won't even see Pasadena this year. GT should be roughly #8 or #9.]

Gotta disagree with ya, buddy. USC is the only team in the top ten that lost...so they should fall below G.T.....down to maybe one or two places above N.D., that they barely hung on to beat. Since USC lost to Washington, and N.D. beat them after that.

G.T. should only rise to #10 from #11: # 9 LSU socked Tulane 42-0, while G.T. trailed 2-7 Vandy 31-28 late in the 3rd qtr. No way they leapfrog LSU.....Iowa...going life and death with Indiana...in my book falls one or two spots, and Boise St rises to their spot.

Let's hold off who should be playing in the National Championship game just yet....remember the SEC has a tourney....and should Florida or Alabama fall before that, they could then beat the other in the SEC championship game...both ending with one loss.

Which, in my book, with Oregon blowing out USC...and only losing to Boise St...means Texas vs Boise St should they win out....with Oregon ready to replace Boise St should they falter.

I look at the trends...and the trends tell me Texas, Boise St, Cincinnati and Oregon are the top 4 teams right now (not necessarily in that order btw)...with Florida # 5, and Alabama # 6. Iowa #7. Penn St #8. LSU # 9 and G.T. # 10.

    My opinion, fire away..hahaha.

Vandy will never be competitive with a halfway-decent running back starting at quarterback. It's sad that Adams, last year's outcast, led the 'Dores to their best offensive output of the season (Rice doesn't count).

All that momentum built up from the days of Cutler and Bennett are now gone. It doesn't matter how good our defense is if we don't have an offense worth a damn.

Tech won't move up the rankings because it isn't "popular" enough with the pollsters. If anything, Penn St might even leap-frog Tech to the #10 spot. OR USC will just fall to #10, and Oregon will move up, leaving the same top 10, but with a change in order. I'm betting Tech will remain at #11, no matter what, unless of course, they lose a game and fall in the rankings. In that case, the sky is the limit as to how far they can fall.

Boise St is in the same boat. No matter what they do, the Powers That Be will arrange things so that they do not move past #5. Though, the top 4 teams really do deserve to be where they are - when they're on game, they are formidable opponents. I betcha Oregon will soar above Boise St to #4. Just wait and see...I've got this BCS hoakie system all figured out lol
