No. 10 Oregon runs past No. 4 USC 47-20

EUGENE, Ore. (AP)—As the T-shirts worn in Oregon’s student section proclaimed, it was Fright Night at Autzen Stadium.

It certainly was for USC.

Jeremiah Masoli threw for 222 yards and a touchdown and ran for 164 more yards with another score and the 10th-ranked Ducks trampled No. 4 Southern California 47-20 Saturday night, the Trojans’ worst loss since 1997.

“I don’t know if we made a statement, this is just what we planned on doing,” Masoli said. “If it makes a statement it makes a statement. That’s just Oregon football and how we roll.”

Redshirt freshman LaMichael James ran for 183 yards and a score as the Ducks (7-1, 5-0 Pac-10) racked up 391 yards on the ground against the Trojans, who came into the game with the fifth-best rush defense in the nation (79.9 yards a game).

USC’s defense yielded a total of 613 yards to Oregon.

“It was a real mess for us tonight,” said Pete Carroll, who was handed his worst loss as coach of the Trojans. “Oregon did everything that they wanted to do.”

Southern California (6-2, 3-2) had not lost a game by more than a touchdown since a 27-16 loss to Notre Dame in 2001, Carroll’s first season with USC. The last time the Trojans were so soundly beaten was 1997, when they lost 35-7 to Arizona State and 27-0 to Washington.

Oregon remained alone in first and undefeated in the Pac-10. USC has won or shared the last seven Pac-10 titles. That streak is in serious jeopardy. The Trojans’ run of seven straight BCS games is also in danger.

The Ducks are now poised to take the crown after stomping the longtime Kings of the West Coast.

Oregon fans were decked out in special black “Fright Night” T-shirts with a duck-and-crossbones motif to commemorate the Halloween night game—billed as the Pac-10’s biggest game of the season. Afterward the fans swarmed the field, while a ring of blue-jacketed security guards circled the goal posts.

The Ducks have won seven straight games since an embarrassing 19-8 loss at Boise State in the opener, a game that got uglier when running back LeGarrette Blount punched a Broncos defensive end as he was leaving the field.

Blount was suspended for the season and Oregon moved on without him. James was his replacement.

USC freshman quarterback Matt Barkley, who earlier this week predicted he would feed off Autzen’s deafening noise, completed 21 of 38 passes for 187 yards and two scores. He was intercepted once.

Barkley shrugged after the loss.

“The biggest thing is realizing that there’s nothing we can do about this loss,” he said.

Masoli completed 19 of 31 for Oregon, which had never before scored as many points against the Trojans.

“I was as relaxed as I’ve ever been in my career,” Masoli said. “Even me and LaMike break a couple jokes every so often. It feels great.”

USC went up 3-0 on the its first series of the game on Jordan Congdon’s 28-yard field goal. Oregon answered with Morgan Flint’s 32-yarder, but the Ducks had squandered their opportunity after Kenjon Barner’s 77-yard kickoff return.

Masoli scored on a 3-yard run to put the Ducks up 10-3 late in the first quarter. USC tied it with Barkley’s 3-yard pass to Ronald Johnson early in the second.

Oregon went ahead again on Andre Crenshaw’s 1-yard scoring run. And USC tied it again at 17 on Barkley’s 4-yard pass to Damian Williams.

Masoli found Jamere Holland with a 17-yard touchdown pass to put the Ducks back up 24-17 at the half.

From that point, USC couldn’t keep up.

After Oregon extended the lead with Flint’s 35-yard field goal, USC narrowed it with Congdon’s 39-yarder.

James scored on a 5-yard run and fellow redshirt freshman Kenjon Barner ran for a 3-yard touchdown to make it 41-20 at the close of the third quarter.

Flint had a pair of field goals from 22 and 23 yards out to pad Oregon’s lead in the fourth quarter.

“It was just an overloaded ballgame by them. Masoli was ridiculously effective,” Carroll said. “We really had our chances to make things happen but we couldn’t tackle them in the backfield. the runs that he popped whether scrambles or by design just broke our back. It was a very, obviously, difficult night.”

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott, who was at the game, said he planned to stay in Eugene to meet with Blount and school officials over possible reinstatement.

Scott says he’ll meet with Blount, Oregon counsel, university president Richard Lariviere, athletic director Mike Bellotti and coach Chip Kelly and members of his staff.

He says the university has not made formal moves to reinstate Blount and his role “completely depends on the university and whether they want the penalty revisited.”

The Trojans have lost four straight in the state of Oregon.

“It was intense,” Oregon cornerback Talmadge Jackson said. “Halloween, USC, crazy night game, it was everything everyone expected it would be.”

    Hey William,

I am not sure if I am for a playoff system. In some ways no one will be happy with determining who should be in it. The season is long enough already and I thought that these were to be schools of higher learning instaed of a farm system for the NFL which I feel college football has become. There are more serious issues facing this country and I think Congress should keep their freaking noses out of college football as everything they touch gets FUBAR!!!! If the NCAA cannot figure out something as simple as a true NCAA Champion, then what does that say for all those brainiacs? As many have mentioned here, many question the data that goes into the formula for determining BCS ranking. Bottom line though, keep the damn government out of college sports!!!!

I do have one LOL spelling error to report. Brandon Spikes plays for Florida. Takeo Spikes plays for the 9ers. I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

Yeah, kammeres, post #1105, I read more, heard about the alleged prior activities. What I saw was awful, something to be done in actual war, yes, but not in a game like football. If Spikes really did get his helmet ripped off, it happened in the course of the game, I imagine... and again, I have to IMAGINE here, where's the video proof?? Anyway, if someone facemasks DURING THE COURSE OF THE PLAY, and eyes happened to get brushed by or scraped during the process, that makes you mad and all, but.

There's too much taking the 'Urb's word here, and taking Spikes's word here, too much heresay. Plus, though it sounds like the scrappy play (that Spikes says preceeded his eye-gouging play) sure was outlandish, it happened 1) during the course of play, and 2) during a PREVIOUS play.

How did raking that Bulldog's eyes help to stop him from gaining any more yards on the play when he was already down, bogged down by the pile of humanity there?

What 'Urb had to say to the press just smells fishy. "My player had a rough childhood," Urban basically told us, "and that's why he needed to fish around in that Bulldog's helmet FOR SECONDS, trying to scrape his eyes. Trying to gain a competitive advantage."

If I see video evidence that backs up Spikes' claims, fine; I may then let him off the hook. And that's not too much to ask in this day of YouTube.

William, nice chatting with you. I try to be objective here as well in most issues in likfe as I hate eating crow. LOL. I am doing so a little bit this year because of USC. I still believe in the old saying that until you're beaten, you're still #1 and that is the sole reason I keep FLA in the #1 spot. However, ALA should still be #2. Overall they have played far better than most other teams. I'd really look seriously at Cincy and Boise St at #3 followed by Oregon even with their flop earlier in the season just as USC's with Washington. Both Boise St and Washington deserved to win those games. Oregon wole USC did not.

Herb, agaon there is not arguing with people like you. It's a waste of my time. Like I said dude and I meant it as in casual conversation, I found my spelling errors long before you did. And additionally, if you had ever played organized football, you wouldn't have been so surprised at the FLA player's action. Was it wrong, most definately!!! But as a former football player, I have seen and experienced similar tactics that go "unseen," such as being kneed in the kidneys. It you took a microscope to every play you'd be surprised at what you'd see. Was this stunt uncalled for???? MOST DEFINATELY and a one-half game suspension is bull crap!!!

TGS Red shirt freshman is not a freshman its a 2nd year freshman nice try

CT ya there out there. Though there real rare to find ive got one signed from when I was there in 89-92 There was some celebration honoring him and he came into the locker room post game and I got to talk to him it was my first start at Center my freshman year and he came to talk to me about the job I did. My dad was at the game with his old Bobby Moore jersey on so I told him my dad had on his old jersey from when he played there and he asked me to get my dad and hed sign it.

I also have acouple Fouts jerseys signed and acouple balls.

Lets NOT remember the 96 Rose Bowl. I was there on the sidelines standing next to Coach Brooks screaming run right and idiot shifted left side. We knew from watching film that every game that year Collins comes out reads left calls out left package then hands off to Carter for off tackle run right. EVERY GAME they did that and noone could stop it for some reason. As everyone knows we didnt either.

Beavers fans are funny there all now jumping up saying there gonna ruin our season. Dont think so it will be another USC game. This team is to focused the hype of past teams doesnt carry with these guys. In the locker room post game ya everyone was excited but the attitude is now lets get the next team. Coach Kelly has them locked in with the mind set of celebrate after the season is over til then we have WORK to do.

Did you guys see the freaks of nature of recruits we had there? Lache Seastrunk is a beast he might just be better than Jonathan Stewart.

Herb, did you read the UF writeup? According to the article, Urban's wife was the one that brought it to his attention a day and a half after the game, isn't that funny? His wife had to point it out before he decided to take any action. I watched most of the first half of that game and there was lots of dirty stuff going on - stiff arms with fingers in the faceguards, face-to-face mouthing off, extra hits, and more. Officiating crew knew it was a rivalry so they eased up a bit and then clamped down when they realized that it was getting out of hand.

Dawg, WAWebfoot, here's something for you - Walt Garrison played one game on two broken ankles, just had the trainers tape him up extra thick. Instead of new car as a signing bonus, he asked for and received a horse trailer. When Duane Thomas started playing for the Cowboys, people thought the two wouldn't get along - they were complete opposites - but they became good friends.

Speaking of Florida, I just saw the video of Takeo Spikes gouging that Georgia player's eye while he was all tangled up in the bottom of the pile. Talk about sportsmanship. At least Oregon's Blunt was attacked each time before he pushed or struck back.

And yes Tomcat I completely agree with you on the fact that the Longhorns have way to easy of a schedule this year, ESPN and several highly reputable sports news sources have stated this. And I as a Longhorns fan believe until we play a real tough schedule, keep the Longhorns away from the damn bowl games, its a disgrace honestly.

Tomcat, while i agree with your sound reasoning that a lot of texans are very prideful, I myself am from Texas. The BCS as a whole is an overrated and outdated system, it no longer works in todays college ball game. I believe a playoff style not unlike the NFL shoud be adopted, it would ensure that teams that genuinely earn the spot based on stats and margins of victory. But in response to your quote as to Florida in the BCS top. I admit Florida has good players, but at the same time it feels like the refs play more for them, anyone watch the arkansas game, and the unsportsmanlike conduct call for an illegal block, which florida immediately on the next possession proceeded to lay on arkansas. but enough blathering on about games already played and the politics involved, I would not like to start a bloodbath. AND CLINT P, seriously guy shut the hell up. you obviously know nothing of the sport of football, nor are you qualified to speak about Longhorns anything. You are giving Texas and fellow Texans a bad name with your loudmouth and Illinformed rants, I hope you take this guidance to heart.

    Herb,

Like I said dude if you read my post, I discovered my mis-spelling before you did !!! . Like I also said, Texas and Texans are disliked for that HUBRIS reason. Those are the ones that give a great many Texans a bad rap!!! These are the same that fail to realize that are many who are just as proud and love their roots as Texans do.!!!!

BTW, I didn't have have to go to a web site to look the word up either.

And another thing, I get tired of Mack Brown crying because of Texas;s standing in the BCS polls with its, "tough," schedule. Play some tough schools like the SEC and PAC-10 do. Even ND has a tougher schedule tan Texas.
