Clay, Wisconsin run through Purdue 37-0

MADISON, Wis. (AP)—John Clay ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns and Wisconsin shut out a Big Ten opponent for the first time since 1999 to snap a two-game losing streak with a 37-0 victory over Purdue on Saturday.

Freshman David Gilbert added a leaping blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown, putting an emphatic exclamation point on a dominant first half in the win that made the Badgers bowl-eligible for the eighth consecutive year.

Wisconsin (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) and Purdue (3-6, 2-3) came in heading in opposite directions after the Boilermakers had beaten Ohio State and Illinois.

Instead it was Purdue’s worst shutout loss since a 48-0 defeat at Notre Dame in 1992 and worst Big Ten shutout since 1991, when the Boilermakers lost 42-0 at Michigan.

Purdue gained 141 yards on offense for the game, nine fewer than Wisconsin rolled up in a 150-yard first quarter.

That’s because the 248-pound Clay, who leads the Big Ten in rushing and rushing TDs, flattened the Boilermakers early and helped Wisconsin restore confidence after losses to Ohio State and Iowa followed by a week off.

Quarterback Joey Elliott had the worst start of his career, going 5 of 23 for 59 yards and an interception before being replaced late in the third quarter. Elliott’s receivers didn’t help him either, dropping six passes.

Wisconsin has now won 23 straight home games against unranked opponents. The Badgers rushed for 266 yards and started with 11 straight runs in an 80-yard TD drive on their first possession.

Clay, who has been working through a sore ankle, capped the drive with a 1-yard dive to make it 7-0.

After the first of three field goals by Philip Welch made it 10-0, Wisconsin scored twice in a span of 31 seconds in the second quarter to put it out of reach.

Elliott made an ill-advised throw from his goal line midway through the second quarter that Wisconsin cornerback Devin Smith picked off at the Purdue 20. Four plays later, Clay scored from the 1 to make it 17-0.

Purdue was forced to punt on its ensuing possession, but Gilbert leaped over 6-foot-3 defensive tackle Adam Brockman and 6-foot-6 offensive tackle Peters Drey to get his hands on Chris Summers’ punt. Aaron Henry returned the block 9 yards for a TD to make it 24-0.

Clay, who finished with 24 carries, made it 31-0 on the first possession of the second half when he ran for 3 yards, fumbled at the goal line and recovered it in the end zone.

Elliott had appeared to turn a corner with his performances against the Buckeyes and the Illini but was on the bench in favor of Caleb TerBush late in the third quarter. Purdue’s quarterbacks finished 9 of 33 for 81 yards.

The last time the Badgers were this dominant was a 59-0 rout of Indiana 10 years ago when the Badgers rolled up 461 yards rushing behind Ron Dayne and Michael Bennett.

I love the Badgers but hate ignorant wisconsin fans. If you hand a team 21 points you didn't outplay them. According to your logic that makes the Bears a better team because they outplayed the Packers in week 1 but handed them 4 ints. No, the better team is the one that actually wins the game. This is the problem with Wisconsin/Packer fans you don't think before you talk. And thanks for finally proving to the country how terrible Packer fans are, you boo the one guy that turned your franchise from a joke into a contender again. Between 1967 and 1992 the Packers were one of the worst teams in the league, then Favre comes along and changes that, you morons then honor him by booing him because Ted Thompson ran him out of town. There is so much hate and hostility in Green Bay. Bears fans didn't boo McMahon when he signed with the Packers. He is still beloved and honored in Chicago regardless, and he didn't do half as much for the Bears organization as Favre didn't for Green Bay.

Hey Get educated we beat Purdue 37-0 and they beat OSU, but we lost to OSU is so is anything really relevant. The statement was that we played better (WHICH WE DID) but still lost oh well i'm over it. and as far as vikes 38 pack 26 they played a whole game we only played a half simple as that

Hey apatheic Purdue fans - ready to finally give up on Hope or do you want to blame it on dropped passes and Joey? Fact: Wisconsin used to be a basement team. Fact: They turned the corner. Fact: Purdue used to be a decent team and Tiller couldn't take us to the next level. Fact: Michigan and Purdue are about the same size as is Wisconsin but we just don't want to consider ourselves as good or as capable. I'm sick of Purdue losing and its fans making excuses. Hope sucks - he didn't have the team prepared pure and simple. The sooner he and all the Tiller remnants are gone the better. Second place is the first loser and Purdue has sucked since Woodson played there. We can never win the big game. After Orton's so-called fumble to Wisonsin, it's been downhill ever since. HOPE MUST GO! He's the new Akers.

I agree with your last statement, but handing a team 21 points simply means your teams isn't as good as the other team. Playing mistake free is an obvious clue that OSU is better.

    btw - Vikings 38 Packers 26. What's your excuse?

Way to go Badgers! Nice to see you play a full 60 minutes.

And to you OSU lovers, there is no doubt the Badgers outplayed OSU however, as previously posted, the Badgers handed the Buckeyes 21 points. You won't win many games when you throw two INT for TD and allow a return for TD in the same game.

This is also only the third shutout in Big Ten Conference play. (Ohio State and Penn State have also shut out a Big Ten opponent one apiece this year.)

Hey Get Educated Allow me to educate you YES THE SCORE WAS 31-13 OSU got the w and that's the only thing that matters. However WIS. had twice as many yards, had the ball for over 42 minutes(that in itself would warrant outplaying someone) but made three crucial mistakes 2 int's for td and a return for a td. So if you had watched the game you would know Wisky did outplay OSU just didn't play mistake free ball which hence the score and the w for OSU. Scoreboards aren't always an indicator of who played better!!!!!!

As a Purdue fan I'm completely embarassed. I've been waiting for basketball since week 3, losing to Northern Illinois in West Lafayette. At least they'll look competitive while letting me down in the end as opposed to this football team.

Congrats Wisky on a nice shutout. You should have beat Ohio Fake, you outplayed those fakers.
Again today you showed you're clearly a better team than Ohio Fake.

So how bad is Ohio State? Since Purdue, they've played two awful defenses in Minnesota and NMSU.
