No. 17 Buckeyes steamroll NMSU, 45-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—New Mexico State didn’t offer much of what No. 17 Ohio State will see the next three weeks. It just filled up an open date on the schedule.

Dane Sanzenbacher caught two touchdown passes and Terrelle Pryor threw for a score and ran for another in the Buckeyes’ 45-0 victory on Saturday.

“I think we’re ready for the last three games,” Sanzenbacher said. “Today helped because it builds confidence. Everyone’s excited about the fact that our goals are still intact.”

The game was a respite for four-time defending Big Ten champion Ohio State (7-2), which closes the regular season with pivotal conference games at Penn State, against Iowa and at Michigan.

The Buckeyes had seven players who provided more offensive yards than New Mexico State did as a team in 45 plays. The defense throttled the overmatched Aggies, last among all Bowl Subdivision teams in total offense, by allowing just 62 yards—and two first downs.

“Really, their offense never got on track,” Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said. “When you have a good defense, you’re probably going to get good field position and you’ll maybe get some bonus points, which we got.”

Linebacker Brian Rolle took advantage of a fumbled snap, falling on the ball in the end zone for a score. By then the Buckeyes were already looking ahead to their showdown in Happy Valley next week.

“It will be fun going back to Pennsylvania,” said Pryor, a native of Jeannette, Pa., who spurned Penn State and Michigan to come to Ohio State as the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the country two years ago. “We’ll be ready to go. I always want to play in tough stadiums against tough teams. Those (Nittany Lions) fans will try to tear me up because they were one of my choices.”

Rebuilding New Mexico State (3-6) received $850,000 to come to the Horseshoe. The defensive front for the 44-point underdogs was outweighed by almost 50 pounds by the Buckeyes’ offensive line.

Just playing on a big stage seemed to be enough for the Aggies.

“Ohio State was my dream school coming out of high school,” said linebacker Ross Conner, a native of NMSU’s hometown in Las Cruces. “I made it to the ‘Shoe.”

By any measure, the game was a mismatch.

“As the game went on, we were just trying to get out of here healthy,” NMSU coach DeWayne Walker said.

The Buckeyes felt the same way but they lost kicker Aaron Pettrey, third in the Big Ten in scoring, with an apparent knee injury to his kicking leg.

Tressel, frequently criticized for his ultraconservative play-calling, had his team onside kick after its first touchdown and later called a double-reverse wide receiver pass that resulted in DeVier Posey’s 39-yard TD throw to Sanzenbacher.

Pryor completed 11 of 23 passes for 135 yards. The sophomore also ran for 83 yards on nine carries, scoring on an 8-yard run before taking off his pads and watching the second half from the sideline.

“I would take care of my superstar—if I could find a couple of them,” Walker said. “You’ve got to take care of your star player and get him ready for the big game.”

Pryor ran for a TD and hit Sanzenbacher for a score after a surprisingly scoreless first quarter. The Buckeyes were just warming up.

Later, Dan Herron took a pitch and then lateraled back to the left-handed Posey, who tossed a 40-yard spiral to Sanzenbacher for a 21-0 lead.

Pettrey kicked the extra point and was covering the ensuing kickoff when he was blocked on his right knee and lay for several minutes on the field. He was helped off and stood on the sidelines in a warmup suit without crutches in the second half. Tressel would only say he was “banged pretty good.”

It was one of the few negatives for Ohio State on a gray, chilly day.

“It’s really important we had a good game this week so we could go into November ready to roll,” defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said.

Don't you Buckeye bashers realize how cowardly you look when you say that "Ohio State can't win in January", or "the Buckeyes can't play with the big boys".... Ohio State is 3-3 in BCS bowl games this decade with a National Championship. I see Iowa and Michigan fans in hear bashing the Buckeyes! What's your record in BCS games this decade? Michigan you are 0-2 , and Iowa....oh Iowa,,,hey Iowa....YOU HAVE NEVER MADE IT TO A BCS BOWL GAME!!!!!!!!!! BITE MY NUTS BABY!!

osu will be lucky to win 1 more game , osu fans are dellusional. no points in the first qtr and only 14 points with 5 minutes left in the first half ?that game should have been 21 -0 after the first qtr and with tressell, you know he will be conserative the rest of the year, maybe after this year when he fails to beat whoever the buckeyes play in a bowl game, they will wake up and realize tresell isnt the man, so what he beats michigan every year, how about beating lsu, florida, texas, or usc for once?

A funny thing about the standings if OSU was undefeated they would be ranked number 1 - 3.... yet now they have two losses and the fans still think they can hang with the big boys in the country. I am a die-hard Hawkeyes fan, born in Iowa City. And throughout this season I have watched a team that gets the job done when things look very very bad. The Hawkeyes have one thing that the Buckeyes DO NOT have... An unending will to finish the game. Pryor has not seen a D like the Hawks have and Stanzi has proved he can overcome any and all adversity. Give the Hawks some credit that they deserve before the Hawkeyes crush your ego and you "nuts".

Just Me, You must be a Mich fan who really has nothing to say and is now jump ship to join the Gators and Timmy ball. You talk about Ohio State playing NMSU for our bye week filler, atleast they are a DIV I school unlike the power house DIV II school Mich picked, Del State, plus you palyed your starters deep into the 4th quarter to make your freshman quarterback look good. You must be best friends with the very Bias Mark May who still thinks Tebow is in the running for the Heisman and will probably get it. One year Mark May talks about Timmy and the great numbers he put up his Heisman year and he did, he earned that one but this year not even close.

2007 yards per rushing TD passing TD
    252.8 23 32

    2008 196.1 12 30

    2009 165.4 8 10

But according to May this year, its given to the BEST player in college football its not about the numbers he says, its about leadership. Thats Bull, its about who gets hyped and who dosen't.
Although Tim will improve those numbers greatly here in the next three weeks when he plays the powerhouse teams of Vandie, 5 passing TD'S, 2 Rushing, FIU, 7 passing TD'S, 3 rushing and FSU, 4 passing, 1 rushing and he and his offense will play the entire game for all three to pad those numbers.

Ohio State's last three games. Penn State is a toss up, they could be the team that played Iowa or the team that played Michigan. Iowa is going to lose against our defense, end of story, we're going to be the game where their luck finally runs out. Michigan just lost to Illinois, Ohio State shut Illinois out, I just hope little Forcier doesn't get too badly beat up against our defense.

I feel bad for the pathetic little jerks who take time out of their day just to find Ohio State articles and say negative things. They're only proving that they think of Ohio State ALL THE TIME, so thank you.

    GO BUCKS!!!!!

All I care about now is winning our last three games, winning our FIFTH straight Big 10 Title, and going to the Rosebowl. WE ARE YOUNG! USC IS DONE!!!! NO BCS BOWL FOR LITTLE PETEY CARROL AND THE CHEATERS. GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone seems to be forgetting that Ohio State is YOUNG. Our Defense has THREE shutouts this year (should be five, but thanks to Tressel putting in second team defenses) and we only lose 3 seniors. Pryor is still 19 years old (is 14-4 as a starter) and is almost there. He will be in Vince Young form his last two seasons. Our top three receivers are a freshman, sophomore and Junior. Our RB's are Junior, junior, freshman, freshman. Look out, cuz next year is the Buckeyes year!

42 On October 31st Florida played Georgia, Texas played Oklahoma State, Iowa played Indiana, USC played Oregon, Miami played Wake Forest, South Caroline played Tenn..and the SUCKEYES played New Mexico State. Works for me ranked #17 and with USC losing that sure is going to move them up the polls. Iowa will beat them and so will PSU. I would not be surprised if Michigan takes the game in Ann Arbor. Sound like a typical delusional worthless nut. Here Gator Gator lololololololol

Its nice to see that a few people have a clue about how college football works and the money aspect but it is also disturbing that mjany that claim to know sports are so ignorant to it,did you not see the NMS players taking pictures like the were tourist this will be probably the greatest memory in their football careers and the back up QB was an Ohio kid from Waverly who would have never got to play at the shoe if not for this chance and to think they made close to a million$ for their program that will help them get better equipment and facilities.Granted this was like a bowl game for them and OSU had nothing to win but when you can take in that kind of money and distribute it out to a smaller schools its a whole lot better than just having a bye week and for that the real football fans that understand are greatful for teams like OSU that will help out since they are the largest money making school in the country with their athletics programs and they do share the wealth
