IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Of all the holes Iowa has dug itself, this was the deepest.

Indiana was leading by 14 in the third quarter and just two yards away from the Hawkeyes’ end zone. Given how poorly quarterback Ricky Stanzi was playing, one more touchdown might have brought their charmed season crashing down.

Tyler Sash instead returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown, and Stanzi bounced back from a career-high five interceptions to rally the No. 7 Hawkeyes to a 42-24 victory, yet another improbable finish in a season full of them.

Brandon Wegher had a career-high 118 yards rushing and three TDs for the Hawkeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten), who scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to stun the shell-shocked Hoosiers.

“No matter what happens, we know there’s still time left on the clock,” Stanzi said. “There’s a chance to win, so you can’t give up.”

Iowa is off to the best start in school history, thanks to four wins by three points or less. And after needing two blocked field goals to beat FCS school Northern Iowa in its opener, the Hawks control their own destiny in the Big Ten—with a chance to play for the BCS title.

“Our guys don’t buckle,” coach Kirk Ferentz said. “If they were ever going to buckle, I think today would have been the day.”

Stanzi threw four interceptions in the third quarter alone on a windy day in Iowa City, and Indiana (4-5, 1-4) took a 24-14 lead into the fourth.

Stanzi responded by hitting Marvin McNutt for a 92-yard touchdown pass and, moments later, connecting with Derrell Johnson-Koulianos from 66 yards to put Iowa ahead 28-24 with 11:38 left.

Wegher made it 35-24 on a 6-yard TD run and added a 27-yard score with 1:12 remaining.

Ben Chappell had 227 yards passing and two touchdowns to lead Indiana, which must have felt a case of deja vu. The Hoosiers blew a 25-point lead in a loss at Northwestern last week.

“We got into the fourth quarter again and we couldn’t fight it off,” Indiana coach Bill Lynch said. “We just didn’t have enough plays in our arsenal to hang with them.”

Stanzi’s mental toughness has long been defended by Ferentz, and he showed why at the start of the fourth quarter. He hit McNutt on a play-action rollout for what turned out to be the fourth-longest pass play in Iowa history. Johnson-Koulianos did most of the work on the other long touchdown, weaving his way through the Indiana secondary.

“No matter what happens, he keeps on playing,” Ferentz said of Stanzi, who threw for a career-high 337 yards. “If there’s one thing I can say about Rick, it’s resiliency. He’s done a great job of leading our football team.”

Stanzi opened the second half throwing interceptions on back-to-back possessions, and the Hoosiers moved to Iowa’s 2-yard line already leading 21-7.

That’s when Iowa’s defense made one more spectacular play.

Chappell was hit from behind as he dropped back to pass, and Sash gathered the loose ball in the air before racing 86 yards for a touchdown that brought Iowa within 21-14 and woke up a stunned crowd at Kinnick Stadium.

“It’s just something that jumps start everybody,” Iowa kicker Daniel Murray said. “It just kind of gave us confidence that we were back in the game.”

The Hoosiers appeared to have answered on a TD grab by Terrance Turner in the corner of the end zone, but the call was overturned by video and Nick Freeland missed a 28-yard field goal.

The game was strange right from the start—perfect these cardiac Hawkeyes on Halloween.

Iowa deferred on the opening kickoff, a rarity under Ferentz, and the Hoosiers marched 69 yards into the wind for a 7-0 lead on Darius Willis’s 4-yard run.

Ryan Donahue, one of the most reliable punters in the nation, shanked an 8-yarder into the stands midway through the second quarter, giving the Hoosiers the ball at the Hawkeyes 35. Five plays later, Chappell found Mitchell Evans for a 16-yard TD pass that made it 14-0.

The Hawkeyes answered on Wegher’s 4-yard TD run with 2:39 left in the first half, but after holding Indiana, Amari Spievey inexplicably picked up a wobbly punt and fumbled it away deep in his own territory. Chappell found Damarlo Belcher for a 9-yard TD with 9 seconds left.

It was a brutal end to the first half for Iowa, and a brutal end to the game for Indiana.

As a stunned and delighted crowd of Hawkeye fans filed out of Kinnick Stadium, they were serenaded—quite fittingly—by Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer.”

“I’ve never been in a game like this. I’ve never seen a game like this,” Ferentz said. “I can’t say enough about our players.”

conference championships can be a huge factor in deciding who goes to the title game or bcs bowl. take the big 12 for instance. say texas played nebraska this yr and beat them. nebraska wins the north and gets a 2nd chance to play them in the big 12 champ and wins. nebraska who lost to texas in the regular season now jumps texas getting a better bowl but no chance for a title game. texas out of the title game. changes things. so say iowa wins out but have to play a psu team they beat earlier in the season in the big 10 champ and lose. almost every other conference has one. just kinda evens things out. and another reason there will only be 1 sec team in the national title and not 2.

No need for a conference championship game in the big ten if the top team in the conference is undefeated and has beaten the next two best teams in the conference..which iowa could do. Funny how every other year, iowa fans cringe a bit when we see ohio state, penn state, and michigan on our schedule..however this year has been a little different. I'm not going to guarentee an iowa victory over ohio state...but the teams are pretty well matched up..should be a good one...also, i dont think penn state is overrated! I dont think theyre in the top ten, yet their only loss this year is to an undefeated team in the top 4 in the bcs standings....and i will guarentee that they beat ohio state!
As for wisconsin...they are 6-2. Almost any team in a major conference that is 6-2 will be somewhere in the top 25...thats a no-brainer!

Okay post #408. who cares if 4 teams in the top 25 are big ten teams. Penn st was overrated to begin with. when its all said and done they will play 2 ranked teams at home all yr with the weakest non conf schedule ever. so far they are 0-1 against a ranked team. and why is wisconsin even in there? they got beat 2 weeks in a row and then they shutout a 3-6 purdue team and now they are ranked? say what you want about the big ten but i stick to my guns, its weak. by the end of the year there and after all those big ten bowl losses....again. you will see. and i do agree the big ten needs a conf championship. if you dont play everybody in the conf, how can u call urself the conf champ. look at bama and florida. that would be a great national championship, but it will never happen because why? conf champ.

Yet again the AP Poll shows its bias. 1-6 are 8-0 and Oregon (7-1) jumps over Iowa (9-0). Man they really don't like someone new joining the top ranks. Thank God the BCS ranking is the only one that matters. Apparently, computers really are smarter than humans!!
    ------------------------------
When you are Florida, you can get away with a couple of sloppy games against mediocre teams (such as, Arkansas outplayed the Gators but lost because Arkansas has a very average kicker). Oregon beats a one-loss USC team (and the one-loss was to a below average team) and jumps, despite the season opening, humbling loss to Boise State. Iowa should be in the top 6. TCU should be in the top 3.

Wow again people are complaining about a bad call. Not that I watched the game, but would it have changed the outcome? Who knows, but blaming the officials for an Indiana loss and an Iowa win is getting old. Every game has a call that is either missed, or blown, because it is officiated by humans, not machines. If you want to piss and moan about something, then complain that we have government officials that want to investigate the BCS for a damn Monopoly, or the lack of playoffs in college football. Incase you haven't noticed, but every level of college football, except one has a playoff to decide the National title, and no one seems to complain about the playoff systems they use.

Yes Iowa has won close games, and got lucky against UNI, with two blocked field goals to end the game. Yes they have the toughest schedule according to the experts of all the top 10 teams, and yes the experts are finally starting to show Iowa some respect, but I know next year that will all be gone again as it is every year.

Indiana's coaches even admitted that their first string athletes are as good as anyone, where they lack is depth, as do a lot of teams, Iowa happens to be one of the few this year that has good depth.

All that matters this week, is Northwestern, not all the talk about maybe playing USC, which got whipped by Oregon, or playing Oregon, or any other team in a bowl game, since there are far to many games to play yet. The one thing that hurts Iowa, is the fact the Big Ten does not have a championship game like most conferences do.

As for all of you non Iowa fans or haters of the Iowa program, please tell me why you don't berate the other top teams when they win a close game, or when their offense looks like crap but their defense wins it for them, Florida vs Arkansas comes to mind.

I have watched a lot of football and played some. I think Iowa wins the close games in the fourth quarter because of the severe pounding the Iowa defense and offense cause on the other teams. It is a bruising game and Iowa inflicts the most bruises.

I don't know what the outcome would have been if the refs got it right, but my god, you have instant replay and still f@ck it up. Sad. Definitely changes the outcome. Would have been 7 more for Indiana and the whole team gets pumped up instead of being in dismay. Oh, and I am not a Hoosier fan either.

Youre right, I know nothing about football..but i do need to correct myself.
the top 7 in the nation are as follows..
    1.) Florida
    2.) Texas
    3.) Bama
    4.) Iowa
    5.) Oregon
    6.) Cincy
    7.) TCU

With TCU right behind Cincy...not by far tho.

Indiana fans haven't earned the right to blame losses on the refs. At least USC, Miami and Oklahoma have earned it, and they do so with gusto every time they lose, but when you haven't won a conference championship in 43 years (and haven't even come close during that time) you've only earned the right to say "Please sir may I have another?"

Jrall....let me explain something to you bout the AP poll....according to those voters, USC is the greatest football program in the history of the universe! According to those voters, USC is and always will be 10x better than Florida, Alabama, Texas and Notre Dame combined. So, if a one-loss team stomps the almighty USC, then that means that team (oregon) is the best team in the country! However, they couldnt put them at number one because of undefeated teams...but they did jump iowa tho! I'm a huge hawks fan just so you know...The AP poll is a joke and I think Oregon deserves to be in the top 6 but TCU and Cincy should not be.

good point angelino! Nobody said anything last year when iowa lost four extremely close games...but they WIN five or six close ones this year and all of a sudden its the luckiest team ever!? Last time i checked up on teams in the past who started off 9-0...regardless of how close those games were, it never mentioned in caps next to their record (got lucky against this team and that team). When the dust clears and the season is all over with, all thats left is the name of the school and their record.

p.s. congrats to the oregon ducks for winning against USC! What a great win for a great program!
Keep it rolling Hawks! Maybe we'll meet up with Oregon in the Rose Bowl. It'd give all them
Iowa-bashing USC fans a good chance to see what the big 10 is capable of!

Why wasn't Iowa the unluckiest team in the country last year when they lost 4 games by around 12 points? By the same token, why are they the luckiest because they won 4 by around 12 points? The luck only matters when you're in a position to win. Keeping yourself in that position, in spite of adversity, is what a good team does. Don't hate. Ain't got to congratulate, either. Just wait until your team has a string of good fortune. Let's see how objective you stay then. If the Hawks just play the games and take care of business, a national championship, however improbable, is not impossible. If it's in the cards, please enjoy this Hawk fans, but let's not get be ugly winners. In my recent memory, there was nothing more pathetic than pre-game taunting, then post-game blubbering, drunks crying in the Orange Bowl parking lot after SC scrimmaged a clinic in our last BCS bowl.

I love this time of year! Some people just hate to see those teams with 2 and 3 star players out-pacing those who receive 4 and 5 star players annually. Just because Iowa's players get it done when needed and some other teams don't...does that mean they don't deserve the ranking? Na, they are placed appropriately for their wins. Top 5. This is where they belong until they lose. Hell, USC has two loses and their fans are still bashing Iowa as they think their team should still be in the top 5! Washington...really? Nice. I have seen plenty of crappy, scrappy, pathetic, last-second wins by top 5 teams this year. But it's a WIN after 60 minutes. Judge it accordingly. Go Hawks and keep it going!

Even if the refs make the right calls Indiana doesnt win! Its still only 38 points!!! If you wanna start playing the what if game, take the wind out of it and Iowa scores 2 more touchdowns on a couple of those pics that the wind held up. Our recievers had 5 yards of seperation and the wind held the ball up. When it comes down to it, IOWA put up a W and will continued to be liked by the computers.

And for those who say Iowa is the "luckiest" team in college...Maybe youre right...but i'd rather be the luckiest and undefeated than really really good with one or two losses! Right USC?! The truth is that Iowa does play to the level of their competition and can play with anyone because of that.

The upcoming iowa vs. ohio state game....Iowa's offense is just as good as OSU's and the Iowa defense is probably a little better. Granted, we have no chance is stanzi decides to complete five passes to OSU. At any rate, it should be a classic game!

IF Iowa beats OSU...Iowa will be rewarded heavily!! But for now its one game at a time...GO HAWKS!
