CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP)—Michigan receiver Roy Roundtree cradled the ball and sprinted for the end zone.

Terry Hawthorne took off after him, finally catching up 76 yards down the field and spilling him across the goal line. Points went up on the board and it looked as if another long afternoon for the Illini was taking shape.

And it was, until a video review ruled Roundtree down at the 1, the Illini stopped Michigan on four straight runs, and Juice Williams answered with a 99-yard touchdown drive to take the lead on the way to a 38-13 win over the Wolverines.

“A lot of guys would have quit,” said Illinois coach Ron Zook, recipient of a dreaded vote of confidence earlier in a season almost completely without any redeeming features. “Terry didn’t quit. He kept going. He made the play of the game, maybe the play of the year.”

And how.

Before the goal-line turnaround, Michigan had given up just 94 yards of offense. Twice it appeared ready to take a 20-7 lead on the way to what would have been its first road win this season.

Instead, the Illini (2-6, 1-5 Big Ten) finished with 500 yards of offense and Michigan looked almost as lost as it did at times during last season’s 3-9 fiasco.

“It’s a big momentum change, particularly on the road,” Rodriguez said. “When you have the chance to seize momentum and you let it reverse on the road, it’s tough.”

More than half of Illinois’ second-half surge came on three touchdown drives that surrounded a pair of ugly three-and-outs led by freshman quarterback Tate Forcier.

Most of that 99-yard drive came on Mikel LeShoure’s 70-yard burst up the middle, but Williams, who ended three first-half drives with sacks on third down, led two more drives to put the game out of reach.

He capped a 79-yarder with his 2-yard toss to London Davis. And after Michigan went backward on its next possession the Illini went 45 yards for another touchdown, this one a 3-yard run by Williams for a 28-13 lead.

Michigan (5-4, 1-4) turned the ball over three times, twice when Forcier coughed it up in the second half.

A year after ending a three-decade bowl streak and finishing 3-9 in coach Rich Rodriguez’s first season, the Wolverines remain one win from eligibility, but have four straight Big Ten losses and a win over Delaware State in its last five.

“We haven’t given ourselves much of a chance because of some of our own errors,” Rodriguez said. “Again, you have to give them credit, too, because they made plays, but we’ve got to play a little bit more efficient to give ourselves a chance.”

Illinois hadn’t beaten a Bowl Subdivision opponent this season. But Michigan turned the ball over three times and seemed to breathe life into a team that barely appeared competitive during a five-game losing streak to start the Big Ten season.

“A lot of teams in this situation usually give up, quit,” Williams said after Illinois ended a five-game losing streak. “But we made a pact amongst ourselves that we aren’t going to stop until the end of the season.”

Williams, who went wild on the Wolverines last season with 431 yards of total offense—ran for 97 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown and completed 8 of 11 passes for 123 yards and another score.

Michigan, which started 4-0 with a win over Notre Dame, hosts Purdue next Saturday, then travels to Wisconsin before wrapping up the regular season at home against Ohio State.

“We’re not getting wins that we should, we’re just playing for pride now,” safety Troy Woolfolk said. “We know we’re not able to win the Big Ten, but we still have a chance to go to a bowl.”

Forcier finally got the Wolverines moving on the next drive, which looked promising until he was sacked and fumbled at the Illinois 16.

He finished 13 of 23 for 257 yards and Carlos Brown had 110 yards rushing on 25 carries and a touchdown.

Roundtree had four catches for 92 yards, including the 76-yarder he was stopped on.

Illinois added a field goal and another stop. When Michigan blocked a punt with 3:49 to play, the Wolverines were in a three-score hole with only the faintest hopes left.

Forcier immiediately ended those by fumbling the ball back at the Illini 15, Six plays later, Jason Ford went 79 yards to put a cherry on top for Illinois.

Before the goal-line turnaround, Michigan had pretty much shut down Williams, who accounted for more than 400 yards of offense in their meeting last season, a 45-20 rout by Illinois.

Though the Illini can still get to six wins, it won’t be easy. They go to Minnesota and host Northwestern before a trip to No. 5 Cincinnati and a home date with Fresno State.

“This game doesn’t mean everything is OK,” Zook said. “We’ve still got four games to go.”

Well, as a Michigan Alumni, I am very saddened by the recent scores, and seemingly continous losses Michigan is having with their Football Program. This year, RR was able to do some recruiting, it is obvious that RR was not to smart in keeping Forcier as QB even during times when RR could readily see he was losing the games even in the third quarters. RR has a second string QB that is obviously better than Forcier is at this point in time. Forcier may get better as he gets
older, but at this time he is no ready to be the main QB for Michigan or any other major College Football team, and when RR sees this and wakes up to that fact, then, and only then, he may have some good luck at winning some of the remaining games. If he uses Forcier, he will lose all three of the upcoming games, and Ohoi State will roll over Michigan like a steam roller. Thats how it really is!

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this game! I guess my favorite part, though there were many, had to be when the Wolverqueen touchdown was taken off the board, after review; only to be followed by an Illini touchdown just minutes later. In a matter of minutes the score went from 20-7 in favor of the queens, to 14-13 in favor of the Illini. Now, the TRUE measure of these Wolverqueens followed because a REAL team will fight back from adversity and struggle on, right? However, these little kittens err Wolverqueens simply folded like a cheap suit, going on to lose in a blowout. What a bunch of P U S S I E S! BWA HA HA HA !

Michael, lets look hypothetically at this issue. Supposing that ND did not lose to UM and USC, and went undefeated they would probably still end up playing Boise, the Florida/Alabama loser, or Iowa in the second best BCS game. There simply is no justifying ND's jumping over Florida, Alabama, Texas, or Iowa. Offensively ND, when healthy, is one of the top groups in the nation, but the defense, you must admit, is not on the same level as the offense. Like I said you can continue to hope, if I was in your shoes I would be, but I feel the cards are stacked against you. Be careful what you wish for, Penn State doesn't get any respect but are extremely quick in the defensive front and can pose problems for you. They blew the UM o-line into the backfield on EVERY play, they are definitely not an easy match up.

Sorry, but ND isn't going to be playing in a BCS game either. They won't be ranked in the top 14 by the end of the year and they shouldn't after Michigan put up 38 points against them and beat them.

I hate to ruin your Monday, but please read the latest. There is a lot of talk of ND-Penn State in the Fiesta. Please, google College Football Bowl Projections. As much as you hate Notre Dame , you just can't dismiss them should they go10-2. That's just reality, and you have to accept it. Face it, they are 10 points of being in the National Championship game!

I'm a true blue fan but i'm discouraged. Even though Carr stopped recruiting before he left they still have enough talent to at least be mediocre. They're embarassing. There are (4) decent players on the team.........NONE OF WHICH IS THE QB. I think RR can get it done sooner or later, likely later if he has a chance.

Michael again why the belittling, is it necessary. Yes I am aware of the deal with ND, however they need to move significantly to get there in the only poll that matters, the BCS poll. The computers will continue to drag them down despite running the table, if they can. Michigan is most likely going to lose out and USC looks as if they will lose at least once more, so those losses are hurting you much more than you realize. I understand your passion for ND, I have the same for Michigan, however passion should not substituted for good old common sense. You can keep hoping, but I feel that the cards are stacked against you. The 58th strongest schedule (I looked it up!) is simply inadequate to push you in.

If RR was smart, he would start next years recruit in 2010..Gardner. He's a big strong QB that looks great..way better then forcier could ever imagine to be. Gardner's around 6 ft 5 in. I believe. He's not a small whimpy guy like forcier. But knowing RR, he will keep forcier in as starter and continue to lose games. RR should be using more of his qb's instead of just one and sometimes two. I believe that the 4th and 5th string QB's are better then their top 3, I also think that they are bigger. RR needs to do a lot of changes to the line up and coaching staff, what he has isn't working and will continue to fail unless things change. Win or lose, I will always be a Michigan fan, but I will let them know what I think if they play like the lion's.....

Rich Rodriguez is 8-13 overall at Michigan including 3-10 in the Big 10. His resume is rather impressive since arriving on the scene.

In his first season he coached the worst Michigan team in the HISTORY of its football program. That first season included many memorable milestones, but nothing compared to the loss to Toledo. That made him the first Michigan head football coach to lose to a MAC school. In addition, the conclusion of his first season ended the longest consecutive bowl streak in the country. Way to go!

In season two he got off to a slow start, but he's back on track now. He became the first Michigan coach to lose back-to-back to Michigan State since the mid 1960's. In addition, he also became the first Michigan coach to lose back-to-back to Illinois in 52 years! Wow! But wait, he even made another Michigan first. He lost to Penn State back-to-back for the first time in school history. Through it all he's only won a single game on the road. I'm so happy he's in Ann Arbor. I mean who could have Michigan acquired that would have been better than Rich Rod.

I can think of many. Thank the alumni and boosters of Michigan football who ran Lloyd Carr out as head coach. You got exactly what you wanted.

If you knew your college football, which you don't at all, ND will go to a BCS Bowl game should it be ranked 14th, and have nine wins. The Irish are very close to that. You really don't know what the hell you are talking about. It is amazing to me how little some fans know about this game.

Murphy- Blame falls squarely on RR and his inept staff. The team is unprepared to play every week, RR's fault. The team can't execute, RR's fault. The complete lack of fundamental skills, RR's fault. The team is completely undisciplined, RR's fault. Greg Robinson's defensive strategy is pathetic. How many plays were blown up in the first half by blitzing and pressure, so why did they stop? RR's fault. Offense stopped at the 1 yard line four straight plays, clearly RR's fault. I am a lifelong, die hard, bleedin' maize and blue Michigan fan; but enough is enough. They should of fired the entire coaching staff and left them in Champaign. The team has gone no direction but backwards under RR, hence he should be canned and the sooner the better! Youth is no excuse. The entire team are not freshmen so the fact that they play like it is a direct reflection of the coaching they receive.

Its funny how some of you so called "Michigan fans" are now turning on the team and RR. Have you guys forgotten how young we are? Did ya think that we were gonna be BCS contenders right away?
Ya I sat there and watched us get our asses handed to us and
it was very frustrating. Turnovers and dropped passes killed us not to mention the fact that Illinois had that great goal line stand.
My biggest question is why RR didnt play Robinson? I guess we'll never know.
Im not ready for RR's head on a platter just yet. He doesnt have the personnel he wants on defense and it shows big time!!
Now if we are playing like this next year at this time then I might agree with what's being said about RR as far as his coaching style goes.
