Jones’ 4 TDs lift Oklahoma past K-State 42-30

NORMAN, Okla. (AP)—Landry Jones learned earlier in the week that Sam Bradford wouldn’t be returning this season, leaving Jones as the full-time, rather than fill-in, starting quarterback for No. 22 Oklahoma.

His comfort level is increasing with every start, and that’s one reason Oklahoma’s offense is beginning to catch up to its defense. In his fifth start, the redshirt freshman completed 26 of 37 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns in the Sooners’ 42-30 victory over Kansas State on Saturday night.

“The most exciting part of tonight was when the offense answered back when it had to,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “… It’s a sign we’re becoming a more complete team.”

Running back DeMarco Murray returned from a one-game absence due to an ankle injury and scored three touchdowns for Oklahoma (5-3, 3-1 Big 12). The Sooners jumped ahead 21-0 and hung on while Kansas State (5-4, 3-2) twice closed to within five points in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, Jones went 10 of 10 passing while Murray scored twice, on a 6-yard reception and a 3-yard run, helping the Sooners hold their lead.

“Every game you just have to keep getting better,” Jones said. “And I’m getting better. I’m seeing the stuff easier out on the field and seeing the coverages more.”

Bradford, who won the Heisman Trophy last season, announced last Sunday he would undergo season-ending surgery and likely enter the NFL draft. Jones’ teammates said they have confidence in his ability to lead the Sooners the rest of the season.

“Landry is growing each week,” Murray said. “He’s a great player and a great competitor. He knows the job is his now.”

Oklahoma’s defense, so strong in a close loss to No. 3 Texas and in a rout of then-No. 24 Kansas, came through in the final minutes against the Wildcats. The Sooners stopped Kansas State on downs at the K-State 41 with 4:10 left and Quinton Carter intercepted a pass from Grant Gregory at the Oklahoma 2 with 42 seconds left.

The Wildcats’ Brandon Banks returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, the fifth time he’s scored on a kickoff return in his career and the fourth time this season—both Big 12 records. He also caught nine passes for 156 yards.

“Brandon played well in a lot of different ways,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. “…You begin to expect him to do some things with kickoff returns. But I thought he went up and competed well and made some catches in coverage.”

Kansas State remained atop the conference’s North Division despite the loss.

DeJuan Miller, who had 11 catches all season entering the game, led the Sooners with nine for 94 yards, while Ryan Broyles had eight for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Oklahoma has won 28 straight home games, the longest active streak in the Bowl Subdivision.

Kansas State hasn’t won at Oklahoma since 1997.

“A loss is a loss,” Snyder said. “I think the fact the youngsters did come back and made the effort and got back in the ballgame, I think that is a positive.

“You have got to be proud of the fact that they didn’t give up, which I am.”

Early on, it looked as if the Sooners would run away from the Wildcats, as Oklahoma needed just four plays to score on each of its first two possessions. Jones hit Broyles for a 15-yard touchdown 73 seconds into the game, and his 23-yard scoring pass to Miller made it 14-0. Oklahoma scored again on its next possession, as Jones and Broyles connected on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 4:40 still left in the first quarter.

Keithen Valentine’s 2-yard touchdown run made it 21-6 in the second quarter, but Oklahoma’s Adrian Taylor blocked the extra-point kick. A 44-yard run by Oklahoma’s Chris Brown to the Kansas State 5 set up a 1-yard scoring run by Murray.

Valentine’s 14-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-1 play and a 2-point conversion early in the third quarter made it 28-17. After Oklahoma went 3-and-out, the Wildcats went on a 75-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a 41-yard halfback pass from Daniel Thomas to Banks. Oklahoma’s Auston English blocked the attempt, leaving the Sooners up 28-23.

A holding penalty wiped out a 38-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Broyles, and a subsequent unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Broyles gave Oklahoma a first-and-45 late in the third quarter, but the Sooners picked up the first down, thanks to an 18-yard reception by Murray and a 25-yard catch-and-run by Broyles.

Murray closed the drive with his 6-yard touchdown catch, but Banks returned the ensuing kickoff for a score, making it 35-30 with 11:18 left.

Thomas, who entered the game as the Big 12’s leading rusher, carried 16 times for 88 yards. Gregory completed 19 of 30 passes for 174 yards.

rededicated.......Barry Switzer, although not perfect, (none of us are) booted his share of players. Remember Marcus Dupree? Possibly the greatest RB recruit os all time. History, down the road, gone, addios, see ya. Barry probably could have done a better job of maintaining his recruits, but the fact is that he was a head football coach. He was not a babysitter. Barry was and is a fine human being, and I for one take umbrage at your maligning of such a great coach. Was part of your rededication also, taking time out to judge others? How can you make such a remark? Do you not find your remarks a bit sanctimonious? Barry Switzer is, and was, a fine coach who did exactly what he was hired to do. Although I am not a theologian, I think it goes something like......."judge ye not, lest ye be judged..........". Lay off Barry. Just sayin'...................Boomer Sooner.

Sad to know that some Texas fans cannot seem to display an ounce of class even as their team is on a roll. You might try taking a lesson from your beloved QB or head coach

Hey, horns.....you have been nothing but lucky all season.....even with a second string quarterback and a struggling offensive line....Texas STILL didn't do any whipping up on OU....matter of fact.....McCoy looked awful and so did Shipley......hey....I bet that is the dirtiest McCoys pants have been all season....he seemed to be eating dirt every time he tried to get rid of the ball..........so you beat OSU.....they are minus their two best running backs....seems to me that the only big games you win are the ones where they are missing key players......hmmmmmm.....different story if you actually beat their BEST....so....live your dream.....since you didn't have a tough schedule at all this year....win the Big 12 (that is still a maybe) and go on to the national championship.....the sweet thing will be to get there and LOSE!!!!! Oh, my....what a disappointment....you have your hands full with an SEC defense....especially if it is Florida or even Alabama....guess McCoy better take more pants.....he may need them....

Michael J.......As a Sooner fan, I can answer that question. I have several friends who live in Texas, and are 'horns fans. They are all class acts, as I find most UT fans to be. There are some on this thread. A shame the few that post here have enough influence that you would need to ask that question. I have been going to the OU-UT games for over three decades, and find most Texans to be fine, upstanding people. I can tell you with absolute certainty, that this sampling is not representative of most 'horns fans. Boomer Sooner.

Question? What kind of a year would Texas have if McCoy had gone down their first game of the season?I have always been a Sooner fan. I don't want to see any of these fine young quarterbacks go down to injury. I want to see the best play the best.If Texas wins the big 12, I will pull for them to win the national champsionship. How about you Texas fans? Would you be a fan of any other big 12 teams if they qualified for nat. champsionship?

My first thoughts about the game were, OU has nothing to be proud of, beating K State in Norman by far less than the points projected before the game, and looking shaky throughout the 3rd qtr. But there are probably more positives to take away from this game than most of the other OU wins. The running game appears to be clicking, the red zone offense is efficient, 3rd down percentage is at 80%, and the defense was able to make key stops when they needed to. K State's gameplan was to slow down the game, and in fact won the ball possession stat, and try to keep OU's offense off the field. They were successful to some extent, and even with all of the OU penalties, OU's offense showed it's stuff. On one scoring drive they had to overcome 50-yards of penalties, and still managed to make first downs and get to the end zone. Still, they can certainly play better than they did Saturday!

With USC losing, I wonder if that means they will be going to the Holiday Bowl this year? If OU wins out, people are saying Cotton Bowl, but damn I think an OU-USC Holiday Bowl would be kickazz.

SOONER!!!!!! All I got to say is that all the people that are saying the Sooners are having a down year ought to look at the three losses: by 1, 1, and 3 to BYU, Miami, and Texas. Not exactly chopped liver, guys! Put a healthy Sam Bradford and Jermaine Gresham, and let's see if those losses are still losses. Anyway, God willing, the Sooners will win out the rest of the year, including Bedlam, and then get ready for the Cotton Bowl, and then get ready for next year. BOOMER!!!!

This year would be the year which will hurt Texas. Could the Big 12 change the rule for the championship game? I think the conference should do what they do for basketball and have one division and take the top two schools for the championship. If a 7-5 North team plays Texas in the championship, it would drop Texas in the computers and possibly in the human polls where by Alabama and Florida would play each other and Iowa could be undefeated having played a tougher road schedule. Therefore Texas may need the Big 12 to change the rules this year or win by 40 or more points. I think Texas is going to Fiesta Bowl unless the Big 12 does what they should do. Texas-OSU in the championship.

If OU can win this game, they have a chance to move up a few spots at teams above them lose. VT already did but OSU and others may not win (though as an OU fan who hates them both, I still think I'll pull for the cowboys). It will be nice to see OU get a head start on the TX team for next year's RR Shootout as Bradford's replacement gets the experience that Colt's does not.
