Collaros leads No. 5 Cincy over SU, 28-7

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Zach Collaros makes a practice of practicing his quarterback scrambles in practice. You know what they say about practice.

Collaros threw four touchdown passes, three off broken plays, the Cincinnati defense forced two critical turnovers and the No. 5 Bearcats remained perfect with a 28-7 victory over Syracuse on Saturday.

“We do a scrambling drill every day,” Collaros said after just his second start in place of injured quarterback Tony Pike. “We have good chemistry with the receivers.

“All I know is I like to improvise a little bit.”

To the dismay of the Orange (3-5, 0-3 Big East), who registered eight tackles for loss but only one sack.

“It’s hard to run around and get someone open to make a big play,” first-year Syracuse coach Doug Marrone said. “You have to have great vision. You have to keep the play going. We didn’t finish.”

Collaros was 22 of 28 for 295 yards and no turnovers. Always a threat to run, he managed just 22 yards on nine carries, preferring to use his strong right arm to inflict the damage.

Collaros is a remarkable 47 of 63 (75 percent) for 749 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception this season and has rushed for 213 yards and two more scores.

“He’s definitely a kid that understands what’s going on out there,” Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said.

Collaros hit Armon Binns on scoring passes of 81 and 13 yards off scrambles, Kazeem Alli for 16 yards off a botched field goal, and Adrien Robinson for 4 yards as Cincinnati (8-0, 4-0 Big East) won its 14th straight regular-season game to remain in contention for the BCS national championship.

“He’s not a drop-your-eyes scrambler,” Kelly said. “He’s going to keep his eyes downfield. Syracuse is pretty good up front. There were too many times where he was flushed out of the pocket. We would have liked to have managed the game a little bit better from the pocket, but Zach is really good outside on the perimeter.

“We got our job done, and we want to get the heck out of here.”

Cincinnati is one win off the best start in school history—the 1951 team won nine straight to begin the season. Its mistake-free offense—the Bearcats did not have a turnover and remain the only team in the nation not to lose a fumble this season—and opportunistic defense made the difference.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Cincinnati linebacker J.K. Schaffer said. “We’re right where we want to be.”

The turnovers cost the Orange dearly. Drew Frey intercepted Greg Paulus’s pass in the back of the end zone late in the second quarter and defensive tackle Derek Wolfe recovered a fumble on a first-and-goal carry from the Cincinnati 7 by Delone Carter late in the third.

“They were driving on us,” Frey said. “We definitely needed some type of spark. When they get down in the red zone, our defense usually steps up, and we were fortunate enough to make a play. I read the quarterback’s eyes, and it said No. 1.”

That would be standout Syracuse wideout Mike Williams, who along with Cincinnati star Mardy Gilyard were hardly noticed. Gilyard finished with six catches for 62 yards, while Williams caught four passes for 34 yards in his return from a one-game suspension. They entered the game 1-2 in the Big East in receiving, Williams with 118.7 yards per game and Gilyard with 96.3.

“He’s a leaper. He makes big plays,” Frey said. “One of the focal points of the game was to stop No. 1 in particular. For the most part, I think we did that. Communication was the main point, knowing where he was on the field at all times.”

Collaros had three TD passes and only two incompletions in his first college start a week ago, a 41-10 victory over Louisville, and was able to scramble away from trouble and find wide open receivers most of the afternoon against the Orange.

Even when his receivers were covered, it didn’t matter. Facing a second-and-9 and leading 14-7 early in the third quarter, Collaros rolled right and, just when he seemed out of time, hit Binns in the corner of the end zone despite solid coverage by Da’Mon Merkerson.

Paulus was 12 of 17 for 85 yards with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cody Catalina and his 11th interception of the season, and heard a round of boos after his errant throw.

“We got all the way down there and executed exactly the way we wanted to,” Paulus said. “We just have to close the deal.”

Cincinnati didn’t waste time getting on the board. Two plays after a holding call nullified a 50-yard reception by D.J. Woods, Collaros scrambled and hit Binns all alone in the right flat, and he raced 81 yards to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead after four plays from scrimmage.

UC is 4 in AP which is voted on by pundits in the media. However, the coaches view UC as 7 behind BCS busters TCU and BS who will not get to the NCG and Iowa with 4 wins by 3 points or less. I ques UC will just have to beat every team by huger margins than they already are.

What a disappointing game. I agree with your comments Sir Comman but mxk1 your the loser for making your stupid comment. In all fairness, that TD that Cincy got in the 2nd quarter off the fake field goal shouldn't have counted because of an obvious penalty of ineligible receiver downfield. An offensive lineman made a block down at the 1 yard line to make the receiver open in the endzone and the lineman is not allowed to go that far ahead of the line of scrimmage. The refs just totally messed up that call. Had they made that call, and Syracuse not turned the ball over TWICE on 1st and Goal inside the 8 yard line and instead gotten TD's out of it, that could've been a very different game. Even that 81 yard TD pass Cincy had at the beginning of the game was lucky as that was a busted up play but I do give credit to Zach Collaros for not giving up on the play like SU's Defense seemed to. Coaching mistakes by Doug Marrone also contributed to the loss. Overall, Cuse is on its way up, I believe this will be a Top 10 team in no more than 4 or 5 years from now.

    UC and Pitt are legit."

Yes, they certainly are. I watched Cincinnati dismantle a very good USF team, with their 2nd string QB running wild...now look at what he did to Syracuse. How many top teams could lose their starting QB, and seem to improve??

The way Cincinnati is peaking right now, they HAVE to be rated top 5.

And Pitt had a very solid D, a very good team. Saw them dominate over Louisville. Very good team, with a very good RB.

    I'll be seeing them soon:

UC and Pitt are legit. The Big East is a small conference but very competitive. I feel like the Big East is missing one piece of the puzzle - Syracuse being a contender. 'Cuse has been down for a while and 'Cuse has just as much if not more football tradition than WVU and Pitt. I believe once the Orange returns as a national power (and they are on the way up right now), as long as UC and Pitt are still competitive, the Big East is going to take a HUGE step forward in both national competitiveness and perception. That all being said ... UC is a legit contender and I believe they are the best team to come out of the Big East since Miami's national championship runs.

Cincy should be ranked no lower than 4, and USC should be ranked no higher than 10 after the new poll comes out. Hopeufully the Irish can move up to 22.

UC as usually dominated another team outscoring by 21 points and a margin of 4 to1. However when be BDS big dollar series polls come out tomorrow it will not surprise me to see UC not even in the top ten. During the Florida game the pundits predict Fl in the BCS championship with the opponent in the following order Texas who played no one significant out of conference, USC who lost to Washington and Oregon, Iowa who barely beats below average teams at home, then BCS buster TCU or BS. No mention of UC the only undefeated team in the BCS who has dominated every opponent they played.

It's a shame that the Polls have to be so biased. Cincy is better than half the teams ranked ahead of them but ESPN/abc is hyping BCS busters and the SEC so they have to talk down the Bearcats. Remember when the Polls were actually about football?!

Brian Kelly can coach, no doubt there, and it looks as if the Bearcats will win no matter who runs the plays. But Collaros is special. He's not very big, but he runs what amounts to a pro style offense like a pro. I expect to see the Zach attack many Sundays to come. Bengals, draft this guy, Carson has maybe two years left.

Ya know Kevin, it is football, and anything can happen. As a long time Cincy fan, I've been through their painful 4-win seasons, and optimism is key. Syracuse gets good recruits every year (better than UC at least), they are bound to get better!

But, Cincinnati's defense ranks 2nd in the country in interceptions (14 total), and well, Greg Paulus loves to throw them. I'd imagine that the Orange are well aware of this and will depend on the running game and may actually see some success early on. But at the end of the day, I really don't see how Syracuse's horrid pass defense can cover our spread, even with Collaros. We will probably put a lot of points on the board.
