No. 18 Miami rallies past Wake Forest 28-27

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP)—Miami’s offense didn’t do a lot for most of the game while the defense couldn’t seem to stop Riley Skinner and the Wake Forest offense.

Yet none of that mattered, thanks to Jacory Harris and his opportunistic Hurricanes teammates.

Harris threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin with 1:08 left and No. 18 Miami rallied past the Demon Deacons 28-27 on Saturday.

Harris threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns for the Hurricanes (6-2, 3-2 ACC), who trailed 27-14 going into the final period. Despite being outplayed most of the way, Miami hung around thanks to some mistakes by Wake Forest—then made its move when the Demon Deacons made a few too many.

The biggest was a muffed punt near the goal line that the Hurricanes recovered and quickly converted into a short touchdown. While the Demon Deacons still led 27-21, it gave the Hurricanes some momentum in a game that seemed to be slipping away only a few minutes earlier.

“That was key because it gave us the opportunity to put some points on the board after we just had a three-and-out,” Harris said. “It was like God sent something from the heavens.”

After getting the ball back with 2:40 to play, Harris directed an 82-yard scoring drive in the final minutes—which included a 29-yard catch by Aldarius Johnson on fourth down—that ended with Benjamin’s diving catch near the left pylon.

It was a heck of a way to bounce back from last week’s overtime home loss to Clemson.

“We went through a lot of stuff my first year,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said. “We would get behind or things would go bad, and we weren’t really able to respond. Well, we responded on this night when things went bad for us.”

It was a frustrating finish for the Demon Deacons (4-5, 2-3), who scored the first 17 points and looked to be in control. Skinner looked sharp in leading their offense, throwing for 349 yards and touchdowns to Chris Givens and Tommy Bohanon while keeping Miami’s defense off balance with quick and accurate throws.

He also ran for a 7-yard touchdown that made it 17-0 early in the second quarter, but everything changed when he took a hard hit on a keeper that ripped off his helmet and broke his facemask with about 6 1/2 minutes left in the game. The 12-yard gain moved the chains to keep the Demon Deacons in position to melt the clock, but Skinner was slow to get up, then dropped to a knee after making his way back to the huddle.

The four-year starter left the game with what might be a concussion, forcing backup Ryan McManus—a former walk-on with five career pass attempts—into the game to direct Wake Forest’s offense the rest of the way.

“You don’t want anybody to get hurt,” Miami defensive tackle Allen Bailey said, “but it played in our favor. … Three people hit him. I turned around and he looked kind of dazed. I was like, ‘He ain’t right.”’

McManus got the Demon Deacons across midfield on their final desperate drive to set up a 60-yard field goal attempt from Jimmy Newman, but the kick fell well short and wide on the game’s last play. Newman also missed a 45-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter, one of a line of mistakes that included several dropped interceptions by the defense and Devon Brown’s botched catch in the rain on one of Matt Bosher’s numerous booming punts.

That put Miami at the 2, and Harris connected with Tervaris Johnson on the next play to make it 27-21 with 11:47 left.

“You want to try and field every punt that you can,” Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe said. “With the rain coming down, it got over his head a little bit. He’s really sure-handed, it just got away from him.”

Demon Deacons outgained the Hurricanes 555-356 and converted nearly half of their third-down chances. Now they head into next week’s trip to No. 11 Georgia Tech with three straight losses and uncertainty about whether Skinner will be ready.

“We’ve had a lot of heartbreaks this year, a lot of close losses, and this is another one,” Grobe said. “This is one where we played pretty good football for four quarters. We just got beat by a really good football team.”

Miami should be ashame of the way the Defense has played all season.
Randy when will you stop putting your Job on the line with having some else call your Defense's

You call these Miami thugs football players? What a bunch of @#$%, they should've lost.

Willie T couldn't even score high enough on the SAT/ACT as these guys "thugs" have done to get int UMiami. Every senior graduated last year, some with double majors or having already started Master's work.

What is your pitiful excuse Willie?

hey post 63, You Catholics have a lot of room talking to Canes fans about homosexual curiosity! After all, it's you @#$%ot, pedophile priests that have pretty much sent that religion to it's doom. If the Canes played your sorry ass Irish they do to them the same thing you do to your Holyness, they give you an ass raping and blow you away. The difference here is Miami is a young unranked team who is playing great considering the strength of schedule, all the Defensive injuries, and the fact they weren't even ranked or highly regarded to start the year. So what's your lame ass programs excuse? Some dumbasses even picked you as a NC contender HAHAHAHAHAHAHA yeah and i'm a chinese jet pilot. ND even made some media dumbasses think that sorry excuse for a team some call Michigan was a top 25 team. Your team sucks big time and hasn't been worth a piss in well over a decade. So take a look at your team before you start talking @#$% about the Canes you arrogant little maggot

As a Wake fan,I feel Jim Grobe has done an awesome job with the program. The game last night despite some bad breaks should show this team has tremendous potential. When you can tally over 500 yards in total offense against a team the calibur of Miami, any deac fan should be proud. I think in the next four weeks we are going to see a much different team.

The fact is Miami is a really young team. In the top 25 in the country you won't find a younger starting offense than Miami. QB J. Harris soph, WR: A. Johnson soph, WR: T. Benjamin soph, WR: Byrd soph, the running backs and tight end are the most experienced players on offense. All the recievers except Hankerson are sophomores with really good freshman behind them.

Their defense is also very young. DT: Forston soph, DE:Robinson soph, MLB Spence: soph, S:Telamaque RSFr, CB B. Harris Soph. S: RayRay Armstrong fresh, This team next year will be contending for a national championship. They have a lot of sophomores and freshman who will have a lot of experience going into next year. Having such a young team, especially on defense will cause mistakes that loses games. If you look at the 2 games they've lost the defense has had a lot of blown coverages. That screams inexperience. You can say whatever you want, but the U is back and this team played one of the toughest non conference schedules this year. They took chances against teams like Oklahoma in the beginning of the year. Yes they didn't have Bradford but Miami didn't know that when they made there schedule. Miami's first 4 games were against teams in the TOP 20. 3 of the 4 were in the top 15 in the country.

I'm saying it now so all the U haters pay attention: The U will be contending for a national championship next year. The U will be unstoppable. They are loaded with talent and that talent next year will be juniors. They are the fastest team in the top 25 this year and next year they will show that. 2 losses this year for a young team is a GREAT season. FLORIDA GROW SOME BULLOCKS AND PLAY MIAMI, STOP DODGING THEM WHEN THEY ARE GOOD. The Gators need to play OTHER teams outside the SEC that are top 15 teams. I would love to see them matched up against a great defensive team. Play an Ohio St, Michigan, Miami, Virgina Tech, USC, Oregon. Take some damn chances instead of using the excuse of the SEC is the best conference so we don't have to. The best team in the SEC is Alabama and of course thats the one team they don't play this year. You can't tell me there not dodging teams when they don't play the best team in the SEC.

2010 will the the year of the CANES: Bank on that.

Icant, if you remember at the beginning of the season, experts were saying Notre Lame had two games that mattered, USC, and Mich. What happened in those games? Oh and by the way Miami was supposed to come out 0-4 so don't hate on the team that outplayed its expectations.

    55. Posted by pyrii - What kind of name is that?! Does the last "i" stand for idiot? I don't really think any knowledgable football fan would say that Wake Forest is Miami's premiere win. The first four games of Miami's season were all against ranked teams; the only loss coming to a then ranked #11 VA Tech. They beat FSU #18, GA Tech #14 and Oklahoma #8. Granted, these were their rankings at the time they played Miami. The Canes are no joke and will continue to get better.

First off, Wake Forest was a preseason "dark horse" by many to win the ACC. They ran up 555 yds of offense tonight: not too shabby.

Miami has had a very difficult schedule, and has held up very well. Turnovers are a part of every game, and Miami capitalized on them, like good teams do.

That said....let's get down to it:

is everyone here an idiot??? [why, you looking for your twin? [Since when did anyone say that Wake is or was the canes premiere win? [one person did, that makes "everyone an idiot?", nitwit?] Lets see, they also killed G Tech and beat oklahoma. [and got stomped by three loss V.T. 31-7] I dont know what team you and your boyfriend watch [ jealous again. Adam K???] but I doubt they have 2 wins over teams of that caliber. you sound like a notre dame fan ...

You better pray N.D. doesn't get the Miami Criminals in a bowl game, genius: if V.T. can throw up 31 on the Candy 'Canes, N.D. will lay 45 on ya. Guaranteed. You haven't faced anything like Clausen, Allen, Tate, Hughes, Rudolph and Floyd, genius. Maybe they lay 55 on ya.

    Def a ND fan, u guys blow.[You've mistaken N.D. fans for Miami's Adam K]

And people, stop @#$%ing about the canes, they won.barely, but yes, they won[ They have two losses to two really talented teams.

[and N.D. lost to then #5 USC, barely, and to the number one winning program of all time: Michigan, at Michigan, which was ranked #22 after the win] A 9-3 or 10-2 season is still very possible and thats a hell of a season [which is exactly where Notre Dame and their awesome offense will be come season's end], especially for this young, banged up team. Shannon, J 12 and the rest of the Northwestern class are gonna bring a NC to mia before they leave, bet on it!

Then let's see this Miami Candy 'Cane team, at 10-2 or 9-3 play Notre Dame's 10-2 or 9-3 team in a bowl, big mouth.

Or STFU, and be happy the Miami Criminals avoid facing the Notre Dame Catholics in a bowl, again. And get whipped, again.

BTW, do all of you Miami fans Project your homosexual curiosity every comment?? Do you know what it says about you??
    Bwahahahaha.

Okay win for the Canes. However, the season is over. Maybe they can salvage the season and hopefully go to the Outback Bowl. I don't know if they are thinking they can show and they will automatically win. They should have crushed Wake Forest. They have a lot of growing up to do! They need to learn how to come out swinging and absolutely crush teams they are suppose to beat and not turn it on at the last minute. This is the same crap that happened with Clemson. Hopefully, they will grow up serious and the coaching staff needs to really look at their strength program with all of the injuries they are having. I am still a die hard Canes fan but I have some serious questions. Last, they seriously need a running game!!!!!!

I'm trying to figure out what's up with that Hankerson??? Am I the only one who thinks Hankerson was dropping passes on purpose? Remember the 'Canes wouldn't have needed those last minute heroics if Hankerson didn't throw the football down! And I'll be the first to admit that I hate pass dropping receivers regardless of which team they belong to (and yes, I do intend to see a therapist about my hate for pass-dropping receivers!). But, I noticed that Coach Shannon thought that something was up and benched Hankerson for the rest of the game!!!
Hank, if you're out there...say it aint so!!!

well hell light the bonfires and break out the kegs-- yins struggled to get by a 4-4 team. thank goodness they quit actually playing and went to a (doesn't stop anyything) prevent defense. otherwise you never know what the outcome may have been. i won't say you suck -- yins are a decent team - considering all the leagal issues typically ocurring down there. also you have managed to beat a few teams who the media( ah hahaha the media) said and thought were also decent teams. but let;s face it you should not be rated as a top 20 team -- i mean i wont say you are overrated (i hate that term) nor will i say you are a joke -- but i will ssay that your team is definitely the benefactor of some hellaciosly humorous calculating done by some really (yawn) umm well umm intelligent idiots
