PROVO, Utah (AP)—TCU quickly crushed any notions BYU may have had about revenge.

The 10th-ranked Horned Frogs scored the game’s firs three touchdowns, then stifled every attempt No. 16 BYU made at a comeback in a 38-7 win Saturday night.

“We came out firing tonight. That’s what we needed to do,” said Andy Dalton, who threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns as TCU remained unbeaten. “I think it shows the capabilities of our team. We still haven’t played our best game, but we played really well tonight.”

Yes, they did.

TCU (7-0, 3-0 Mountain West) held the Cougars under 300 yards of offense and didn’t turn the ball over once in a blowout that kept the Frogs in the hunt for a possible BCS berth.

The Frogs won their eighth straight and routed the Cougars (6-2, 3-1) for the second year in a row. The Frogs sacked Max Hall five times, including once when he was called for intentional grounding. Hall was sacked again on the next play, causing a fumble early in the fourth quarter that led to a touchdown to finish the blowout with 12:00 left in the game.

“We’ve been having fun all year. That wasn’t very much fun,” Hall said. “That defense is the best defense that I’ve faced.”

The Frogs were credited with a fifth sack on a play when Hall was called for intentionally

Hall finished 18 for 28 for 162 yards with a touchdown. The Cougars did nothing to help by committing nine penalties, including two on third downs that kept scoring drives alive for the Frogs.

TCU finished with five sacks and outgained the Cougars 412-298.

The Horned Frogs and coach Gary Patterson left the field to chants of “Ga-ry! Ga-ry!” after continuing their best start since opening 10-0 in 2003.

“I don’t think anyone would have predicted this and that’s why I told the players to enjoy the moment,” Patterson said.

Harvey Unga had more than a third of BYU’s yardage, running for 123 yards and caught a 3-yard pass from Hall for BYU’s only touchdown.

Hall ended up with two turnovers, one on a tipped pass and the other when he was sacked by Jerry Hughes early in the fourth quarter.

BYU, which had won 13 straight conference home games, was hoping to avenge a 32-7 loss at TCU last year that ended the Cougars’ 16-game winning streak. The Frogs were too fast for the Cougars then and now, scoring the first three touchdowns Saturday and never letting BYU back into it.

“We got beat in every facet of the game,” BYU tight end Dennis Pitta said, “that was pretty evident tonight.”

The Cougars gave the Frogs two breaks early in the third quarter. The first was when BYU’s Bryan Kariya tipped a pass straight up in the air and Daryl Washington intercepted it and returned the ball to the 40. The Cougars defense came up with a stop on third down from the 19, but a roughing-the-passer call gave TCU first-and-goal from the 9.

BYU held TCU to a field goal, but the Cougars’ defense blew another chance a few minutes later. Dalton threw an incomplete on third down, but Brian Logan was called for interference on TCU receiver Antoine Hicks and TCU got a first down at the 25. On the next play, Dalton threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Hicks, who left behind Logan long before he caught the ball in stride at the BYU 30.

After taking a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard run by Joseph Turner, the Frogs caught the Cougars by surprise with a reverse pitch pass deep in their own territory. Receiver Jeremy Kerley looked like he was going to throw the ball away and avoid a big loss when he spotted Jimmy Young open near midfield and threw it for a 44-yard gain.

Patterson said he wasn’t paying attention when one of his assistants called the trick play.

“They must have known to do it on first down because that way I wouldn’t veto it,” Patterson said.

Dalton completed the drive with a pass to Ed Wesley, who broke one tackle around the 25 and didn’t face another Cougar until he leaped over the goal line.

TCU scored again with 5:03 left in second on a 12-yard pass from Dalton to Young, who leaped to grab the ball and dragged a toe for the touchdown.

The Frogs had two sacks in the first quarter and nearly a third on a play that turned out even better for TCU. Hall passed the ball just before he hit the turf and the throw went backward enough that it was considered a lateral and a live ball. BYU recovered for a 9-yard loss.

BYU took a gamble late in the second quarter after getting stymied for a loss of 1 on third-and-goal from the 2. The Cougars went for it—quieting the boos they had been hearing from the home fans—and Hall hit Unga with a pass in the flat and Unga ran it in for a touchdown with 1:42 left to get BYU within 21-7.

You can have your real champion without a playoff system.

Just get rid of this bull @#$% where division 1 teams are playing middle school teams 4 times a year.

Make it so you have to play top division teams, not these cream puffs.

I am a former football player from USC and myself and other ex-players from multiple Universities across the Country have joined forces to do what we can to generate a college football playoff system. As college football fans, we have created a petition that will get at least one million signers to present to the NCAA, BCS and Congress through Sen Orrin Hatch from Utah. Please click on the link to sign the petition and send this to your email lists. We appreciate your help

    Nice win Frogheads!!

I miss the old SWC conference and it's nice to see TCU finally get respected nationally, even Houston is getting back to where it was. SMU isn't too far behind these days.Nice.

But I hate Houston since they beat us (Texas Tech), lol

I hope you guys make a run and make the BCS Bowl. This is proof we need a playoff.

It would be nice to see some of the BCS conference teams step up and go to Boise State and TCU and stomp them..., oh yeah, I forgot, the opportunity is not being denied to them by those teams..., they refuse to schedule games like that. What's the excuse?
Quite a few of them play much less talented teams than Boise State or TCU each year!

    Midwest
Conference USA / Sunbelt winner vs. Big 12 Champion
    West

Semi-Final could be in Bowl games outside of home state: True Neutral Field
    Championship Site: Pre-determined.
Rose Bowl could be Northeast vs. Southeast
Orange Bowl could be Midwest vs. Southwest

Whatever formula is chosen, there should be ONLY one school per conference, and then it should be a PLAYOFF! Who you think would win is good for your mind only, which includes me! PLAYOFF will make it like Missouri, the SHOW ME STATE! Seeing is believing for SPORTS!

Oregon was ranked at the time. #16 actually... Before saying something stupid, at least have your facts straight.

    Brandon,
The BCS has already been busted! Alabama, Pitt, Oklahoma all lost BCS bowls to non- BCS schools the last three years. TCU and Boise State can play with anyone, and will.

David, yeah, other "state teams" did well, look at OSU and Cincy. they both routed their teams as well. Even if TCU and Boise St both remain undefeated, they will not AND do not deserve the NCG. BYU only credible win came against OK, who was shown to be nothing without their starting QB. Boise St only win came against Oregon who, for good reason, wasn't even ranked at the time. I'm so sick of these "bcs crashers" Yes, I do favor a playoff system. Main reason being so these teams will get stomped, and shut the hell up.

no surprise. BYU is a BIG, SLOW football team. It was evident against Florida State, San Diego State and yesterday with TCU. This team was NOT prepared to play. I blame the coaches, especially Bronco and his defensive coordinator AND offensive coordinator. I suggest we stop recruiting big lugs and go after lean, mean and quick defensive players. SPEED kills and it continually does to the Cougs. Oh another thing which isn't a surprise, BYU's passing defense? Oh, they don't have one! Never had never will and what's with the slow corners? Getting burned on wide out pass plays to the corner of the end zones. Yesterday and a week ago. My hats off to TCU, I predicted this slaughter last week. And one more thing, Max Hall, the senior, seems to be playing like a freshman when it comes to BIG games. He is NOT a bigtime quarterback and will never be drafted. Enjoy your football career now, it will only last at the end of this year. I predict UTAH will crucify BYU because of SPEEEEDDDDD!!!!!! Very embarrasing.

OK. All silly and bigoted comments are now posted. I think everyone agrees on one thing: The best team will only win when there is a playoff.
I am tired of the beauty contest ranking crap. Pick 8 teams and let them go at it.
Oh, and by the way, it is refreshing to see someone other than the pretty boys winning in the Little 11.
Ohio may have the most sports pundits, but they can't play football for @#$%.

Whoa! Lot of vituperatives on this thread. Lot of filth emanating from some sewer mouths. Keep it civil and clean. What a cess pool this nation has become. As for TCU/Texas in the title game, not happening. The boys/girls at the bcs would croak! And, the season is not over yet. Lots of roadblocks ahead for these teams. I do recall back in the day...1959...when TCU defeated unbeaten Texas in the old SWC by a score of 6-0. Coach Royal called TCU the "@#$%roaches of the conference". Couse, he apologized the next day. Today, he would have to crawl from Austin to Fort Worth on his hands and knees wearing sackcloth and ashes and prostrate himself and beg forgiveness. His job would be taken from him for being insensitive to all horned frogs around the world in general and TCU in particular. Great job TCU. Don't let Utah escape this year!

    Quentin (post41),

It's unlikely we'll see more than three undefeated teams by season's end, Cincinnati, Boise State and TCU. The only way there will be more is if the SECond rate conference keeps telling refs to protect Florida's and Alabama's *ahem* "perfect" records as has happened the last two weekends. The SECond rate conference "ain't that gud!" (as someone from the south would say).

Don't count out Oklahoma State knocking off Texas (or another surprise toward the end). And Iowa, well...Iowa is a Not-So-Big Ten team. Big Ten teams usually fold when they're the favorite, and are often surprised by mid-pack teams.

There are no guarantees, but I see the top four ranked teams after week fifteen being TCU (12-0), Oregon (11-1), the SEC chump-ion (12-1), and Cincinnati (12-0). It will (hopefully) be a mess that sends the BCS into conniption fits and an attempt to "fix" and "select" a champion, rather than let it be won on the field. It'll be another nail in the coffin of the vampire that is the BCS.

Quentin: Agree. What's your (or anyone's) thought on the argument that the seasons would be extended? This seemed to be the biggest hindrance or influence to keeping the system as-is.

Afterthought for the name-caller (the guy who honored me with the article of idiot): Had you taken the time to read my original post, you'd have seen that I coined the possibility of Texas and TCU a rare match up. I even chose Iowa over TCU. And finally, I was asking Texas folk to agree with the my bit about the whole discussion and comparison regarding Florida, Alabama and last week's rhetoric on how Texas was overrated because its defense had to win the game against OU.

There is a strong possibility that there will be five undefeated teams at the end of the regular season: Florida or Alabama (one is going to lose in the SEC title game), TCU, Iowa, Boise State, and Texas. What a nightmare for the BCS. Only two of those teams get to play for the national championship. The BCS needs to retire and let's bring on the play-off system.

Well this idiot does not think the world revolves around Texas.

I am looking at the same data that you are - and this week - Texas teams did quite well. Can you say the same about the other group of "State" teams?

Oh. By the way, TCU is a credible team as is Texas. But then again, the polls mean nothing, right? Except for all of the other teams. Keep your day job. Idiot.
