Jefferson gets redemption, LSU beats Auburn 31-10

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—Jordan Jefferson came a long way in the two weeks since the worst outing of his young career.

Jefferson threw for a career-high 242 yards, including two touchdown passes, and scrambled for another score to lead No. 9 LSU to a 31-10 victory over fading Auburn on Saturday night.

“We always knew we could do this as an offense,” Jefferson said. “We picked the right time tonight to do it. It was important for me to do this as well. During the bye week we really worked hard on all the things that we had mistakes on.”

After passing for 96 yards in a 13-3 loss to Florwhida two weeks ago, Jefferson quickly put that performance behind him with a touchdown pass to Terrance Toliver on LSU’s first series.

Toliver had a career-high nine catches for 86 yards, Brandon LaFell caught a 17-yard touchdown pass and freshman Russell Shepard ran 69 yards for his first career TD.

“I feel like we could have been doing this all year,” Toliver said. “We executed the deep ball well today.”

LSU’s defense was impressive as well, causing two turnovers and sacking Auburn’s Chris Todd four times.

Auburn came into the game ranked eighth nationally in total offense, averaging 464.9 yards, but managed only 193 against LSU. Running back Ben Tate was held to 67 yards, 55 yards below his average coming in. Onterio McCalebb had only 3 yards on three carries.

“They beat us in about every phase of football game, from the beginning to the end and probably everywhere in between,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. “Make no mistake about it, (LSU has) one of the best defenses in the country. We got exposed tonight in some areas. I think that was evident.”

The sacks were refreshing for LSU’s defense, which entered the game ranked last in the Southeastern Conference with five and hadn’t had any sacks in four games before nearly doubling its season total. LSU’s first sack of the game by linebacker Harry Coleman resulted in a fumble by Todd, which safety Danny McCray recovered on the Auburn 17 to set up LSU’s second touchdown on Jefferson’s 15-yard scramble.

The victory assured LSU (6-1, 4-1) a chance to vault into first place in the SEC Western Division when the Tigers play at Alabama on Nov. 7.

Auburn (5-3, 2-3) has now dropped three straight after opening the season with victories in their first five games.

Auburn effectively buried itself under 64 yards in penalties and three turnovers in the first half, when LSU jumped out to a 17-0 lead.

Auburn was shut out in the first half for the first time this season and did not score until Wes Byrum’s 24-yard field goal with 9:21 left in the third quarter made it 24-3. Auburn’s only touchdown came on a 1-yard pass from backup quarterback Neil Caudle to Philip Lutzenkirchen with 3 seconds left in the game.

Todd finished 8 of 14 for 47 yards and one interception. After throwing for 12 TDs in Auburn’s first five games, Todd has not thrown any in the last three, but Chizik stopped short of saying his starting job was in jeopardy.

“I know what’s on people’s minds but it’s the whole offense,” Chizik said. “We had 42 yards at halftime. You can’t pin that on one guy.”

Jefferson wasn’t flawless either, losing one fumble only a few yards from Auburn’s end zone and taking three sacks. Still, he completed 21 of 31 passes, his longest pass going for 31 yards to Rueben Randle, and was not intercepted.

“He was really, really accurate and put the ball about the only place you could put it,” Chizik said of LSU’s sophomore quarterback, who was making his ninth career start. “They hit some underneath, intermediate ones as well, but it was the deep balls that got us. He threw them with a really nice touch.”

Having pledged to throw deep more after completing only one pass longer than 20 yards against Florida, Jefferson did so on his first series, looking for Toliver and drawing a pass interference penalty on Neiko Thorpe.

Soon after, Auburn’s Zac Etheridge was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit on LaFell on an incomplete pass, a second 15-yard foul on the drive. That set up Jefferson’s timing pass to Toliver in the corner of the end zone.

LSU’s defense produced another turnover on Auburn’s next drive when Chris Hawkins made a difficult one-handed interception of Todd’s pass along the right sideline.

Auburn’s third turnover of the first half, a muffed punt by Philip Pierre-Lewis, led to McCray’s second fumble recovery and set up Josh Jasper’s 32-yard field goal.

i agree wth Derrick L, I'am a bama fan ,and i don't hate auburn playerd i just did not like tommy. He was not a mans coach like terry or pat. Aub. should not have fired tommy so quick. I think 1 of the reasons aub. beat bama all those yr was because we had been on probation and could not recruit good payers, but thats the past. Aub will be back in the hunt with the big boys in 2 or 3 yrs. the fans have got to be patience. After pat dye left bama and went to aub. it took him a few yrs to get it gong. if aub. wants to run spread EVERYONE has to sale out and commit to it. It took Steve years to do it at Flordia. now look..
good luck an the season tigers c- ya in Nov. ROLL TIDE !!!!

Ouchyfish ---------- Let's think about this for a minute. Let's say I am a defensive recuit and a pretty good player. Should I go to BAMA and maybe compete for a National Championship or Auburn, where Ark laid 44 on them and LSU laid 31 on them and BALL STATE LAID 30 ON THEM!!!! are you kidding me? If you were the NFL draft, you will start about the 5th round before you get your 1st pick.

You lead a rich fatasy life.

After that pitiful performance against Tennessee (a team Auburn handled much better) I am surprised Alabama fans would come in here talking their usual smack. There are plenty of recruits to go around and regardless of who is coaching Alabama, they can only recruit so many players so please stop sucking on that guys tit like you Bama fans love to do. Give Auburn another year or so and that Iron Bowl is going to be the biggest and best game in college football again.

LSU - don't be pounding your chest too much. Auburn is at best a 6-6 team. They will beat Furman and that is it. As long as Saban is at Alabama , Auburn will be that other team in Alabama that was once pretty good. Auburn had a cupcake first 5 games and you would think they were on their way to a National Championship LOL
Reality is a wicked taskmaster. Their remaining schedule is tough and BAMA will school them in ways that will bring big'o war eagle tears. Seeing hope dashed this year at Auburn has been kind of funny if you are a Tide fan.

And you guys debating failed programs is rich.................

Alot of people are on here bashing Auburn like their a pinata. Thats not exactly fair. I mean in one year, Auburn is going to contend for a national champ. Yalls exspectation is to high. Nick Sabans first year was just as bad. They finished the season 6-6(not including the bowl game win over Colorado.) Be patient. I can't stand watching them lose because I'm the only Tiger fan in the house but you have to understand, Auburn needs a couple years. If you want them to be undefeated now, send them to the MAC od Sunbelt conferences. The Vols proved against BAMA that evry team is dangerous. Auburns high tempo offense is killing their defense because going three and out in 1 minute wears you defense down. I think Chris Todds has improved alot, but Neil Caudle needs more playing time. Maybe Todds will step it up then.

The program failed last year because of Tuberville's cronies not buying into a brand new offensive scheme and players inability to learn it fast enough. I see what Malzahn has done with his offenses and I see what Chizik has done when he worked for solid programs (Texas, Auburn) and I know he will do it again.

    Ouchyfish,

I understand what you are saying and agree that it will take time to rebuild Auburn but when you consider how AU responded to Tommy Tuberville's losing season last year, I just don't see how this season is any more acceptable than last year. If anyone deserved some patience and time, it should have been Tuberville. Nothing against Chizik but how can you explain coming in to turn a program around and implementing a program that looks very much like the same pathetic program that failed last year.

It's easy to get mad and have knee-jerk reactions but people need to realize that the guy has to completely rebuild an entire football program from the ground up. This cannot and will not happen in one year. It's a friggin MIRACLE that they have won 5 games this season. I see some very promising signs that this staff is going to have the whole country drooling in a year or two so please just be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day and unstoppable football programs aren't built in a year. It takes years of good recruiting and players getting trained into the new schemes. Auburn will be unstoppable by 2011. This just takes time.

Not satisfied with how slow we turn around - but we will and we will win again - in FL, in LA and be on top of our Conf.

Top recruits - go to AUBURN - you'll play and play a lot. If you're good - when you leave , you leave a millionaire. Ask Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, Takeo, Jason Campbell and a few dozen others.

I think LSU could beat Alabama. Alabama can't score. If I'm am an Alabama fan I would be nervous. Tenn beat themselves by missing all those field goals. As far as Florida, Alabama can't score. I don't see them beating them.

I will not dog Auburn with this win by the Tigers. As I see it, LSU left 14 points or more on the field the margin of points should have been more. Yet, I luv those Tigers and they are still trying to find and define who they are. S. Shepard had a great run and hope that he continues to trust the line but LSU still has a lot of work to do on the Offence Line.........in the end............LSU Defense is the bomb.....it's all 11 players and subs......good job guys on this win.

    God Bless them Tigers.

Can't say that I am surprised by the outcome of this game. Auburn's offense is a joke. Hurry up offense so you can run a QB draw??? Who runs a no huddle offense so you can run a QB draw every other down??? Gus Malzahn and Gene Chizik will be out at the end of this season. This type of pathetic play is unacceptable for a team that prides itself in being one of the top football programs in the country.
