Cody’s 2 blocked kicks lift Tide past Vols, 12-10

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP)—Mount Cody kept No. 1 Alabama perfect with a pair of super-sized plays.

Terrence Cody, the Crimson Tide’s 350-pound nose guard, blocked a 44-yard field-goal attempt on the final play—his second block of the fourth quarter— and ‘Bama escaped with a 12-10 victory over rival Tennessee on Saturday.

He muscled the Tide to another win, with pure brute force.

“I didn’t really get off the ground,” Cody said. “I just reached my arm up. That’s how I got it. I knocked (the blocker) back. He was on his back.”

Alabama (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) was about to have its bid for perfection knocked down, too.

Then Cody broke through the line on the last play and practically ran into Daniel Lincoln’s low kick. Relieved Alabama fans chanted “Cody!” as the All-American ambled toward the locker room.

Leigh Tiffin booted four field goals—including a 50-yarder and a 49-yarder — to provide all Alabama’s points and the Tide survived Mark Ingram’s first college fumble and some problems for the nation’s top defense. The last few minutes were all about survival—much like in then-No. 1 Florida’s squeaker over Arkansas last week

“You talk about how fragile a season is,” Tide coach Nick Saban said. “You’re controlling a game, even though you may say it’s winning ugly. We’re still ahead 12-3 and totally controlling the game with 3 minutes, 29 seconds and the ball. That’s how fragile a season can be. You make one mistake and you have to go overcome it. I hope that there’s a lot of lessons our team can learn from this.”

His team gets some time to absorb them with an open date before No. 9 LSU visits.

Tennessee (3-4, 1-3) kept alive its hopes for coach Lane Kiffin’s first huge victory with Eric Berry’s fumble recovery and Jonathan Crompton’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Jones with 1:19 left. Then Tennessee’s Denarius Moore recovered the onside kick at the Vols’ 41 with no time outs remaining.

Crompton hit Jones on a 14-yarder before Tennessee was pushed back by a false start. On second down, the much-maligned Crompton hit Luke Stocker for a 23-yard gain to get the Vols into position for the potential game-winning kick.

But Cody and the Tide made a big push, and Alabama, second in the BCS standings, still controls its destiny in the national title race.

“It’s a difficult loss to deal with,” Kiffin said. “You come into a hostile environment and play the No. 1 team in the country, as I said before by far the No. 1 team in the country and the best-coached team around. You come in here and outgain them by (nearly) 100 yards and miss three field goals.

“I don’t believe in moral victories, we should have won that game.”

He said Lincoln hasn’t regained his leg strength since a quadriceps injury.

“He can’t kick the ball up high,” Kiffin said. “If you kick the ball up high it’s never going to get there, so we can’t allow the penetration up front.”

Tiffin’s 49-yarder with 6:31 left had barely cleared the uprights for the 12-3 lead and, it turns out, the decisive points. That came after Cody batted Lincoln’s 43-yard field goal attempt with his left hand.

“Neither was an exceptionally good kick, but they both went through and that’s what counts,” Tiffin said. “I don’t know if I watched either one of them go through.”

Tennessee would get new life when Ingram lost the first fumble of his career in 322 touches, giving the Vols the ball back at the Bama 43. All-American safety Eric Berry jarred the ball loose as Ingram was going down, and then recovered it.

Crompton overcame a sack on the first play and completed 4-of-4 passes for 42 yards and the TD to make it 12-10. Alabama had nearly made it three games in a row without allowing a touchdown.

The Volunteers now have tested two No. 1 teams. They lost 23-13 to then-No. 1 Florida earlier and Kiffin’s team came even closer this time.

Tennessee was unranked the last time it beat a No. 1, topping Auburn 38-20 in 1985.

“On the sideline, we just knew we were going to win in those last 4 seconds,” Stocker said. “I don

Alabama was held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since the Mississippi State game in 2007.

The Vols outgained Alabama 341-256 and Crompton outplayed the Tide’s Greg McElroy. He was 21 of 36 passing for 265 yards with an early interception.

McElroy’s 18 of 29 produced only 120 yards. Ingram, who emerged as a Heisman Trophy contender the past two weeks gained 99 yards on 18 carries and surpassed 1,000 yards on the season.

After Cody’s first block, McElroy passed for a first down and ran for another to move the Tide in position for Tiffin’s field goal that made it a two-score game.

After a roughing the punter on Tennessee, Alabama was in position to milk the clock and secure the victory. But the normally sure-handed Ingram gave the Vols another shot.

Tennessee got close, but Mount Cody was ultimately too big to kick over.

    Phil,
you are the joke, not the sec! i guess you are too challenged to read, but the sec has 3 top 10 teams while the pacifier-10 has 1. who cares about the rest as they won't be a part of the national championship!!!

the nation championship will be the sec against what's left of the rest of the nation. look at a decade when we have only 1 bcs national championship from the pacifier-10! no wonder you have nothing else to talk about but the sec. sec people aren't interested in posting comments on pacifier-10 sites...

while the pacifier-10 ends their season begging for a bowl game, the top 2 sec teams will add another championship game to their schedules which is usually between 2 top 5 teams to determine the sec champion.

the pacifier-10 hasn't produced a game between 2 top 5 pacifier-10 teams this whole year, while teams like lsu will have done it 2 or 3 times!!!

go find your pacifier...this year you have at least 9 out of 10!!!

Bama back to #3 as they should be. SEC is weak this year. As I predicted, only 3 ranked SEC teams. As the season progresses, it is obvious how mediocre the SEC is top to bottom. 3 ranked teams verse r anked teams from Big 10 (and they have 1 less team)....LOL. PAC 10 have 4 ranked teams and they have two less teams than the sorry SEC. Obvious the SEC is a joke

This is for post #910 who either has no access to a Tivo or a DVR. Like the fool that I am, I just wasted ten min. watching the play from 3 angles on "one frame advance". As for #910's {view?} that " the ball lands on the left side(duh?), but 1-2 yards behind the line of scrimmage". The line of scrimmage was the 26 and a half yard line and the ball rolls DEAD(as a door nail) on the 23 yard line. What game were you watching and what difference does it make? I give you my word, the game is OVER.
Tenn. played a great game,as usual, but shake Cody's hand like a man and say, "Wait until next year."

    Cody’s helmet.

For some reason the national media hasn’t caught on that Cody removing his helmet in that circumstance was not a penalty. The SEC even said so in a statement issued before Kiffin’s comments Sunday: “The foul for taking helmet off is a live ball foul treated as a dead-ball foul. That is, if it happens on a play where time does not expire then the penalty is enforced on the following play. However, since the clock ran out on that play, then there is no next play so there is no penalty to mark off.”
CBS announcer Gary Danielson went on a regional radio show to admit that he didn’t know the rule correctly and apologized. Unfortunately, he was the only one.

Let's find out Rick Z's history. Rick hates all us southern inbreds because one of us fathered him and he does not know who it was, neither does his mom. Rick is a self hating southerner, when he was yournger, he lived in the south and got his ass kicked each and every week. Once a bit older and still bitter, he finally left the lovely south for the west coast where he could fit in. Still to this day he is searching for his dad that lives in SEC, parts of the ACC and Big 12 country. Rick we understand why you throw your insults, keep up the DNA testing and maybe one day you will figure out which one of us it was.

914 - If a penalty had been called, it would have been a celebration call and assessed on the following play. Bama recovered the blocked punt so it would be Bama's ball and a 15 yard walk off but there was no time left on the clock, game over.

POST 914, please read foul committed during the kick, 3 yards or less from the line of scrimmage./nuetral zone. UMMMMMMM, the "foul" was no foul, it occurred after the kick, much more than 3 yards from the line of scrimmage/nuetral zone, please read into the rule and just don't post. The SEC has already commented on this, why oh why do we keep going over this again and again?

Rick Z history lesson for you, PAC-10, NO national titles in past 5 years, SEC, 4 national titles in past 5 years. SEC 2-1 vs PAC-10 this year. Dumb southerner here, go surf little boy, and "learn your history". Problem is you have no history, your just the village idiot.

Blown call, too many flags, it was hot, the kickers quad hurt, he kicked to low. Listen up, I have watched the blocked kicks repeatedly, Cody got a helluva push in the backfield, low kicks or not, Cody was three to four yards behind the line. The first time he just completely plowed over the lineman. As Saban said, we really played bad the last three minutes of the game, so everyone screaming and @#$%ing and moaning, you blew your gift, the Tide won and Kiffin ran that mouth as usual, he is a sore loser, hate to see if/when he starts winning how is he going to be. Amazingly even after the SEC has commented about this, people are still crying foul. No penalty, game over.

Casie has a seat reserved on the short bus. He is the typical ignorant SEC fan. He cannot read. he cannot count. He does not know facts.

    In response to another inbred:

You split up the Big 8 and Big 12, and I'm sure you didn't include all of the current ACC teams.

Also, dumbass, the Pac-10 and the Big 10 played each other in the same bowl game every year for years. During a lot of that time, the Big 10 rule was to play only in that game.

Use all of the history, Southern inbred. All of it. I realize Southerners hate history because it makes them look stupid. But don't just throw up some numbers and claim victory. You sound like a governor barring the doors of a college when you do that.

Yes. As the announcer said; blown call. Automatic call as a matter of fact. Be that as it may blown calls happen all the time, part of the game. What is really hilarious is alabama reveling in their victory. Was that really a # 1 team against a pitiful tn team. Geez! And this cody guy can't quit talking about how great he is. No wonder he took his helmet off. He is all about him. He didn't block anything. If he hadn't been there it would have wen right in the tn lineman's rear end. It was too very low, very bad kicks. With that showing texas needs to be #1 with florida then alabama.

It does not matter who is number 1,2 or 3 at this point in time!

The call was not a missed call.

Alabama did look like crap in this game but the call was not missed. Listen to Gary Danielson on the Paul Finebaum show Monday evening and he admitted he was mistaken about the rules themselves when he made that statement. One thing that I am disturbed about is that Kifin does not know the rules either.

Either call would have been a dead ball penality and since Alabama recovered the ball it would not have been a defensive foul. Where Tennessee screwed up was by not even trying to recover the ball.

Cassie, you are obviously an intelligent fellow. With the misspelling of official and the misuse of "that's" I can see why you were number one in your class of Alabama scholars. Surely with that kind of education you can post for us the rule or give us a link that we may peruse.
