Harris, Miami cool off UCF 27-7

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—By the end, about 5,000 fans were all that remained from the biggest crowd ever to see a game in Central Florida’s stadium.

Seemed like all of them were from Miami.

Jacory Harris survived six sacks to complete 20 of 26 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown, Javarris James rushed for another score on the way to topping the 2,000-yard mark for his career, and No. 9 Miami methodically pulled away to beat Central Florida 27-7 on Saturday night.

Damien Berry added a fourth-quarter touchdown run for the Hurricanes (5-1), who matched their best start since 2005.

“We’re on the right track,” Harris said.

Brett Hodges threw for 163 yards for UCF (3-3), but the team’s top rusher— Brynn Harvey, who was coming off a 219-yard effort against Memphis—was held to 25 yards on 12 carries.

UCF is now 0-20 against teams in the AP Top 25 since moving to Division I-A in 1996. Miami held nearly a 2-to-1 edge in time of possession, had 26 first downs to UCF’s 11, and outgained the Knights 363-229.

“Our defense did a great job of keeping us in the game,” UCF coach George O’Leary said. “But offensively, we just did not capitalize.”

It was a perfect day for Miami in the ACC: Not only did the Hurricanes win their third straight, they got help in the Atlantic Coast Conference race when Georgia Tech knocked off Virginia Tech earlier Saturday. Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech now all have one ACC loss, with Virginia (2-0) leading the Coastal Division.

“Kind of made me smile a little bit,” James said, acknowledging that he checked the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.

Although Miami scored the game’s first 17 points, getting past UCF wasn’t easy, not with Harris getting hot so often.

UCF had chances, none better than getting the ball at the Miami 2 midway through the third quarter after a snap sailed over Miami punter Matt Bosher’s head.

Bosher retreated and kicked the ball soccer-style out of the end zone, which turned out to be brilliant.

On third-and-goal from the 6, Jared Campbell got to Hodges just as his arm was going forward, the easy pop fly was intercepted by Miami linebacker Colin McCarthy, and the Hurricanes knew they just dodged a bullet.

Bosher kicked a 46-yard field goal on the ensuing drive, putting Miami up 20-7.

The outcome wasn’t in doubt again.

“We got a positive out of something that could have been negative,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said. “Tough situation for the defense, but they held in there and got the turnover. Those sort of changes are really big for us right now.”

Until Hodges’ 8-yard touchdown pass to Rocky Ross with 9:15 left in the third quarter, the Knights had been scoreless in all 21 of their offensive possessions against Miami. UCF’s two touchdowns in last year’s 20-14 loss came off interception and kickoff returns.

That streak nearly ended much earlier, and might have changed UCF’s fortunes, too.

Hodges connected with Kamar Aiken for a 35-yard gain on UCF’s first possession, getting to the Miami 18. But the drive stalled, Nick Cattoi’s 32-yard field goal try was wide left, and the game remained scoreless.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities,” O’Leary said.

From there, Harris was surgical.

He completed his first seven passes, got the scoring going with a 23-yard pass to Leonard Hankerson, and the Hurricanes were on their way.

And early in the third quarter, after shanked UCF punt, Harris was at his best.

He found LaRon Byrd perfectly for 32 and 14 yards on Miami’s first two plays of that drive, and James went in from 5 yards out on the next play for a 17-0 lead.

“We concentrated more,” Harris said. “We tried to stay focused. We tried to pay attention to what we had to get done and just executed our plays, made the right reads and made the right blocks.”

James finished with 65 yards on 17 carries, giving him 2,032 for his career. He’s seventh all-time at Miami but still No. 2 in the family; cousin Edgerrin James rushed for 2,960, topped only by Ottis Anderson’s 3,331.

“It’s a good accomplishment,” James said. “But I’m happy we won. I’m more excited with the win.”

Dont worry ACC fans we see the real effects of the ACC---- thats the NFL. So when they say the conference is weak year in and year out we know that they dont watch football on sundays either. Next to the Big10 conference who also have gotten poor remarks by the **EXPERTS** just turn the TV on sundays and see the ACC in action. The ACC and the BIG10 have represent themselves well at the next level.

I'll take the 20 point win but the O-line better figure out how to pass protect before next Saturday's game. 6 sacks allowed to UCF. That's brutal! We can't afford to have Harris go down to an injury by having that kind of crap continue.

Well, it looks like the "U" is back on track to win it's first ACC Title in 2009. Even if all 3 teams (VT, and GT) win out, Miami will have the tie breaker over GT, and will definitely be a higher ranked BCS contender than the 2 loss Hokies (even though we lost to them earlier in the season).

To all those ACC haters out there -- we do have decent teams in our conference and at the end of the season, lets just see how many ACC teams will be ranked in the top 25.

And last but not least -- to all you --- Miami (FL), GT and VT fans alike .......... Good luck the rest of the season, and do us all a favor in the ACC -- please win baby and prove to all these jackasses out there that keep running our conference down week in and week out - that ACC Football is back and we're here to stay...... I think everyone in the conference is tired of hearing the bullsh*t from these quote -- experts....... saying how weak our Conference is......... It's time to PUT UP OR SHUT UP!!!!!!........ ITS THAT SIMPLE!!!!!!! ........IT'S OUR TIMEEEEE.........GOOOOOOO CANESSSSS!!!!!!!!

Just one more thing for the ACC board of trustees to CHEW ON --- why dont you try and SHUFFLE up the teams that play in these two divisions....... To me -- I think it's a JOKE to have a weak division (Atlantic) and a strong division in your conference........ Why don't you people just go by records like the Big Ten does? That's the only real FAIR thing to do........ And it wouldn't just be favoring a few teams, BUT ALL the Teams in the Conference - Every Year........ and if you wanna have a conference championship each year - then put the top 2 teams from the conference in it. If there's a tie, then go by overall records or head to head matchups in order to determine who will play for the conference title.......

Becos this year -- LETS FACE THE FACTS -- there are 3 great teams in the ACC and all 3 are in the same DIVISION --- just --- HOW STUPID IS THAT?? It just shows that a POOR team from the Atlantic Division will get a chance at a BCS Bowl and 2 of the 3 powerhouses in the Conference this year will be left out of the Title game becos all 3 play in the same Division of the Conference...... ITS A JOKE................ And I just think that no matter who represents the ACC in the BCS Bowl Game this year, I still think there's 2 other teams in the Conference that's deserving of a New Year's Day Bowl Game -- PERIOD!!!!!

I still wonder why the University of Commuter Fellows went to all the trouble of building that erector set
stadium on-campus. They are improving the Citrus Bowl and driving into town (USF) or beyond (UM) is not a crime. UCF suffers from a "me too" attitude. All the posturing before the game by the Knight fans was not based in any fact. UCF won C-USA in 2007 and is not a bad football team. I knew it wouldn't be blow out, Miami still has a recent tendency to play down to competition and Randy Shannon, unlike SubUrban, will not run up a score with meaningless FGs (although SubUrban will take every FG he can now!). That being said, UCF has to build like USF, a team they were far ahead of at the start of the decade. Eat the O'Leary buyout and start building one block at time.

Schedule does not let up for the 'Canes, Clemson at home next...

    Terry,

Love the enthusiasm, but we're not playing SOUTH Florida this week. We got Central Florida in Orlando. "On paper" this should be an easy game, but this is an in-state game. You can't look past anyone in the state that's trying to prove their worth (isn't that right Free Shoes U) especially at their house or you will leave surprised and dejected at the same time. I think Coach Shannon has our guys in the right mindset for this one though. I can almost guarantee he's said something to them to the effect of not underestimating their opponent this week because of what UCF ALMOST did to Texas two years ago. Miami will come into this game prepared, and Jacory will finally, FINALLY stop scaring us half to death before he puts his game face one...

    My prediction: UM: 42
UCF: 20 (and that's because it's a home game for the Knights)

canes 4 life..looking at this one miami should have control by halftime harris needs to stop throwing pic's and settled down he has alot od power in that arm but needs to put more accuracy and thought on some of those passes this one does not need much of a break down because of miami's losses on d' the bulls will score but this game should be easy game for canes expect 45-20

hah, the second coming of Kevin Smith (Brynn Harvey) will do to the Canes just what Smith did to the #6 Texas Longhorns a few years back (over 200 yards rushing... even if Miami is up at the half, you gotta beware of the second half at Bright House Stadium. 28-25 UCF!
