USC holds on for 34-27 victory over Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Jimmy Clausen and Notre Dame pushed Southern California to the very last second, showing the Fighting Irish could go toe-to-toe with their fiercest rival.

Beating the Trojans, well, Charlie Weis’ team still hasn’t figured out how do to that.

Clausen threw three incomplete passes into the end zone in the closing seconds, and No. 6 USC held on Saturday for a 34-27 victory, its eighth straight win against Notre Dame.

“When it came right down to it we found ways to make plays,” USC coach Pete Carroll said.

Notre Dame’s streak of last-minute victories ended at three, but the Irish (4-2) at least showed they could compete with USC.

“I think anyone that doesn’t realize the fight that’s in the Fighting Irish is missing the boat. It’s evident if you watch the last five games. Every week it’s the same thing,” Weis said. “This team’s a bunch of fighters. I’m proud of the fight. I’m disappointed with the loss, it’s never OK to lose. But they’re a bunch of fighters.”

USC had dominated Notre Dame the past three seasons and led 34-14 in the fourth quarter Saturday. The Fighting Irish seemed on their way to the type of lopsided loss that would have their supporters grumbling about Weis again.

Instead, Clausen and the Irish rallied back, but couldn’t score into the same end zone where the Trojans (5-1) famously scored four years ago on the Bush Push, which gave Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and USC a 34-31 victory in Weis’ first season.

On Clausen’s first pass into the end zone, Kyle Rudolph made juggling catch but was out of bounds. The second was knocked down by Josh Pinkard and the Trojans started celebrating thinking the game was over.

Clausen and USC quarterback Matt Barkley, pals from southern California, even exchanged what they thought was a post-game handshake.

But the officials ruled there was 1 second left. Clausen fired to Duval Kamara, who slipped and couldn’t get a hand on it.

“Coming up short, one second to go, it’s heartbreaking,” Clausen said.

Barkley was 19 for 29 for 380 yards and two touchdowns to Damian Williams, who had four catches for 108 yards. Anthony McCoy had five catches for 153 yards.

The Trojans appeared to be on the verge of blowing the game open when Joe McKnight dove in for a TD early in the fourth quarter.

“Down three scores, I bet everyone in the house probably figured it’s time to throw in the towel. Not this group,” Weis said.

The Irish closed to 34-27 midway through the fourth quarter on a 2-yard TD run by Clausen and a 15-yard TD pass from Clausen to Golden Tate after an interception by Irish cornerback Gary Gray.

Clausen was 24-of-43 passes for 260 yards and two touchdown passes while facing a strong USC pass rush. He threw the ball away five times and was sacked five times. And in the end, he gave Notre Dame a chance, which is far more than the Irish have had in recent years against Carroll’s mighty Trojans. In the previous three meetings, USC outscored Notre Dame 120-27.

USC linebacker Chris Galippo said the game was more stressful that Southern Cal’s 18-15 win over Ohio State, when the Trojans scored the game-winner with 65 seconds left.

“They just kept getting second chance after second chance after second chance, and penalties. We would rip the ball straight our of their hands, but they fell on it,” Galippo said. “This seems to be a theme for our season, these close games. But our defense came through there.”

Tate had eight catches for 117 yards. The Irish also got a 25-yard completion on a faked field goal attempt by holder Eric Maust that set up another touchdown.

The Irish were aided in their final drive by a couple of penalties by USC. Robby Parris caught a 13-yard pass on fourth down to the USC 16, but All-American Taylor Mays was called for a personal foul on the hit to Parris. That got the ball to the 8. Then Malik Jackson was called two plays later for roughing the passer, placing the ball on the 4.

But the Irish couldn’t get the game to overtime and USC celebrated its 10th straight win against a ranked opponent. The Irish lost their seventh straight to a top-10 team, matching the longest streak in school history set from 1984-1986.

Weis was disappointed, but still proud of his team’s effort.

“If you would have told me before the game, hey you can have the ball on the 5-yard line with a chance to tie it or win, I probably would have taken that. I’m really disappointed for those guys in there because they’re fighters,” he said.

Clausen said the Irish, playing in their fifth straight game decided in the final minute, may have pushed their luck.

“When you live on the edge like that, you’re not always going to come out on the winning side,” he said.

Carroll said he can’t explain USC’s streak against Notre Dame.

“We hope to keep this thing going. It’s a big deal to us. It’s special,” he said. “So we’ve got to hang onto it next time around when they come to our place. We have to get after it and see if we can keep the thing going. Because it’s very special for the SC family to continue to be on top of this rivalry.”

I can't believe that the ND and SC fans are still jawing over academics. Yes, both ND and SC are highly rated universities in US News & World Report and other ranking services. But the similarity ends there. ND graduates 94% of its football players; USC about 55%. The Trojan football program is an island of academic mediocrity within a sea of intellectual excellence. USC doesn't expect Pete Carroll to graduate anyone, just keep them academically eligible to play. USC doesn't prevent its players from getting a degree, 55% do. ND, on the other hand, does expect Weis to graduate a very high percentage of the players he recruits. If the graduation rate dropped below 90%, he would be under the gun, even if the team was playing better.

ND continues to beat the drum that this doesn't matter, and it can still compete for the national championship year in and year out. The right head coach can bring in the proper mix of quality players to make that happen. This is unrealistic. From time to time the Irish will make a run. But at a 94% GSR, this will be the exception rather than the rule. The university has made a decision to take the high road, and I give them credit for that. But there is the trade off. Play hard against USC but don't be disappointed if its crew of ballroom dancers (remember Matt Leinert?) wins most of the contests.

Kendrick, all I have to say about your rant is PAC 10 5-0 in last years bowl games!!! Read your history, until recently, USC had been noted for turning out RB's and linemen with a few LB's thrown in. Yes, USC does fold to conference teams, some weaker, but that is almost like a rivialry where anything can happen. FACT, alot of USC'recent grads are actively playing in the NFL. As a guy who has played sports all his life, there's a tremendous jump between each level. I was a standout in HS football, held my own in college, but probably never made it as a pro. I did make the pro's in baseball though before Uncle Sam called for my services. West Coast football has opened up the offenses all over the country. If it sucks so bad, why is everyone trying to copy it?

USC...you might as well settle for the rose bowl again cause you will never go to the sugar bowl again. The fact of the matter is that west coast football FLAT OUT SUCKS!!!!! Sure USC plays tough teams, but they always manage to choke to a weak school in their conference. The fact of the matter is outside of Troy Polamalo, there have not been a USC player that really been worth the publicity in the NFL. USC quarterbacks and running backs are usually the ones that ends up in obscurity. When you heard of a USC QB\RB leading their team to the Super Bowl. The fact of the matter is not just about BCS Bowls, but about NFL careers.

Michael, you're right had my glasses off and hit the wrong key. USC did almost give that game away but a win is a win. I would have said that even had ND won. Five absolutely stupid second half penalties on the defense. Pete Carroll needs to address that. We'll see how accurate your typing is when you get to my age. LOL

I repected you earlier for your logical and calm demeanor. Please don't spoil it, Both schools have alot of pride and tradition.

For a university that is so associated with the Catholic church like Notre Dame is, allowing a shirt like "trojans break when the irish come" is extremely classless. Then again, with all the child molestation that goes on with the preists and the way the catholic church likes to downplay and look the other way on such horrible things, I guess people really shouldn't expect anything other than classless behavior from a catholic university or catholics in general.

Hi Michael, have to correct you on one point, at the time USC and ND played, ND was ranked at #25. I have been a USC fan since the Mike Garrett days. I try to stay pretty objective for the reasons I mentioned, but like all colleges, USC has some jerks for followers as well. I don't think it's a insecure issue, but just that we USC fans sometimes feel "uneasy," to see the team struggle in its "rebuilding," year. We got "comfortable," in a high scoring and high powered offense. Great to see a dominate defense now, but if "we," now could only stop the stupid and thoughtless penalties. Cannot give a QB like J/C second chances. USC should have learned that in the 2005 Rose Bowl.

Layne and Tomcat01 are both right on point. NCAA football at many big name schools are simply breeding grounds for the NFL. Academics be damned.

Don't see why all the SC fans are so "giddy" about beating Notre Dame, an unranked team. The Irish haven't had a football program worth much of anything for over a decade now. Apparently, ND decided that the phrase "student athlete" is really supposed to mean something, and many other big name schools said no thanks -- we'll take all the glory and money that comes with fielding a team of thugs that couldn't think their way out of a fishtank.

Maybe SC and it's fans are starting to feel a little insecure about: 1) barely beating an unranked team, 2) losing to an unranked team (Washington), and 3) the fact that they won't play for a national championship despite all the crooked crap they pull. They can't even win when they cheat. Beautiful! Perfect for southern California!

USC takes the "college" out of college football. They should call it Minor League Football.

Refs give it away? The PAC 10 refs, that is? Please. Remember the Bush Push, anyone? The only bad call that drive was on the SC guy's hit of the ND player while still in bounds. Wrong call. But the taunt on the sack of Clausen. Valid call. ND got rung up for a whisper sign against UM. If you don't like it, change the rule. Or get guys who don't constantly taunt. Roughing the passer. Good call. It was. Guy took a cheap shot at Clausen. He could see ball was already thrown and he shoved him down anyway. No brainer. Jackass Mays spearing WR Parris. No question. One sec still on the clock. Indisputably. Try not to be sore winners, Biff.

ND golden dorks have played in 5 games that went down to the wire. They won 3 and lost 2. They blame the 2 losses on the refs but must have had good officiating in their wins. Instead of whining and crying as usuall, take a look at the awesome defense you have. Now at 104 in total defense, 425 yards a games. 500 yards given up in the last game. But it was the refs fault.

What excuses would you ND fans have if the NCAA had assigned the refs? I have a suggestion for eliminating any question of the ref's. That would be to do away with conference referees. Have them all in a pool to be assigned by the NCAA on a game by game basis. BTW, even if the field refs were PAC10 the others in the booth were Big East. Even the announcers admitted that

Listen Patrick, it doesn't matter what conferences the ref's were from. YOU again prove my earlier points!!! As for the name calling, you prove my point there as well. Sore losers spoil good conversation and I see you're that!!!! If a frog had wings he would not bump his ass when he jumped. USC almost let that game get away with 5 stupid penalties that gave a good team and a very good quarterback second chances. Whether or not ND or USC had a certain player is irrelevant and purely speculative at best. As far as those T-shirts go, never heard of them and never would wear one. That shows a lack of class and I hate eating crow when it's my turn to be the fish in the barrel. So in my opinion, if there is a moron here , you fit the bill. If you have to blame the refs for the loss, you either are full of excuses and crap or you have a crappy team. Which is it in your case?

tomcat dont be a moron. The calls were even, but the refs were from the pac 10. Im not saying the refs were bad, but they were from the PAC 10. And if they teams were at full health meaning USC would have stafon johnson and ND would have michael floyd, i think ND would have pulled it off, Floyd is one of if not the best receivers in the country. And frank, whats wrong with the catholics versus convicts t-shirt, that didnt make you laugh? Or if you were on campus last week, the shirt was "trojans break when the irish come", is that really classless or just funny?

Andy 595. USC almost gave that game to ND with all those stupid 4th Qtr penalties. Had ND won, I would have said USC got what they deserved. ND lost because they didn't capitalize down at the end zone in the final minute. Great game even though USC caused me significant hair loss for which I can spare little.

Sorry Lind about my post. I hit the wrong key (didn't have my glasses on). My rant was directed towards 586, indianapoliscottsfan76. He so indignified the true ND fans as well as the team itself in his statement. They are not blaming the refs. If the officiating had been as bad as some ND fans here profess, the media and everyone would be clammering for an investigation by the NCAA. People like him are so LOW CLASS that they cannot discuss anything here without the name-calling and and the #@%# !!!! Bottom line, the Big East officated the game and few of their calls were overturned by those in the booth. Good luck to the true ND fans and team. It's a rivalry, but in the end class should prevail.
