McCoy struggles, but Longhorns beat Sooners 16-13

DALLAS (AP)—Colt McCoy was a mess. His right thumbnail was ready to fall off, a nagging cold was wearing him down and Oklahoma was confusing him with blitzes he’d never seen.

Then, with a chance to put the game away for No. 3 Texas midway through the fourth quarter, he threw an interception that could’ve turned into a go-ahead touchdown for the Sooners.

McCoy salvaged it all, though. He made a game-saving tackle on the pickoff return, then, after his defense got him the ball back, managed to grind out the final 3:31, sending No. 3 Texas to a 16-13 victory Saturday over a No. 20 Oklahoma team that again lost Heisman winner Sam Bradford.

“You’ve got to be confident in yourself and trust your teammates,” McCoy said. “`Let’s find a way to win.’ We did.”

The sloppy performance did little for McCoy’s chances of winning the Heisman Trophy and it won’t earn much respect for a team that slipped a spot in last week’s poll. But what matters most to McCoy and the Longhorns (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) is remaining in line to play for the national championship—and, well, it always feels good to beat their rivals from across the Red River, especially in front of 96,009, the largest crowd in the 104-game history of this series.

That explains why the usually humble McCoy gave a huge fist pump to the burnt orange end of the Cotton Bowl before the final snap, drawing a roar from fans already celebrating their fourth win over the Sooners (3-3, 1-1) in five years.

“It’s such an awesome feeling,” said McCoy, who joined Bobby Layne and Peter Gardere as the only Texas quarterbacks to beat Oklahoma three times. “This is one of the greatest games in college football. Knowing it wasn’t that pretty, but you gave it your best effort … I’m speechless.”

In the first quarter, Bradford reaggravated the right shoulder injury he sustained in the opener, but was never out of this one. Backup Landry Jones put the Sooners up 6-0 and he drove them for their only touchdown right after Texas scored its only TD, tying the game at 13 in the third quarter.

But the Sooners ran for minus-16 yards on 22 tries. They were stuffed on a fourth-and-1 at midfield at the start of the fourth quarter, then, down by a field goal, asked Jones to win it. His last two drives ended on interceptions, first by Aaron Williams (who KO’d Bradford) then by Earl Thomas.

Texas ran six straight times after that, with McCoy keeping it three of them. His last plunge was for only 1 yard on third-and-8 but a penalty on Oklahoma provided the game-ending first down.

“I thought it was more like a fight,” Longhorns coach Mack Brown said. “It was tough, it was ugly.”

McCoy was only 21 of 39 for 127 yards, with a pair of turnovers within 10 yards of the end zone. Besides the fourth-quarter interception, he fumbled at the end of a long run late in the first half. That came during a spurt of five fumbles in the final few minutes; Oklahoma dropped three of them, losing two, but Texas got only a field goal out of it, and the Sooners didn’t score off Texas’ miscues.

McCoy banged his thumb on his passing hand against the helmet of Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy during the first quarter, but insisted that had nothing to do with throws that at times were wildly inaccurate. He also got away with two passes that Keenan Clayton could’ve intercepted, and perhaps returned for touchdowns, late in the first half.

“Everyone gets beat up, everyone gets knocked around, especially in a game like this,” McCoy said. “It didn’t affect my throwing. You’ve got so much adrenalin going, a little thumb injury is not going to take you out of it.”

No, but well-schemed blitzes might. The Sooners did a great job of sending more guys than Texas could block and in ways that left McCoy wondering who was open. He only completed four passes for 22 yards to his favorite target, Jordan Shipley.

Freshman Marquise Goodwin scored Texas’ touchdown, turning a slant into an easy score after dipping under a defense who was reaching high.

The rest of Texas’ points came from kicker Hunter Lawrence, who hit a pair of 42-yarders and one from 32 early in the fourth quarter.

The Longhorns didn’t run much, or well, in the first half, but improved in the second half. They finished with 142 yards, led by 71 from Fozzy Whittaker, 33 from McCoy (including more designed runs than usual this season) and 31 from Cody Johnson.

With only 16 points, the Longhorns likely will lose their status as the nation’s highest-scoring team. But the big stat this week is the BCS standings that come out for the first time on Sunday.

The Sooners have lost three games by a total of five points. While last season showed they can lose this game but still win the Big 12, they have no chance at a national championship and Bradford’s career may be over.

Bradford returned for his junior year despite knowing he would’ve been guaranteed millions as a top pick in the NFL draft.

“It’s really hard to put into words the frustration I feel right now,” he said.

Jones was 24 of 43 for 250 yards, with a 35-yard touchdown to Ryan Broyles, who overcame a hairline fracture in his shoulder blade two weeks ago.

Oklahoma’s other scoring came on kicks of 26 and 37 yards by Jimmy Stevens. He also missed a 45-yarder.

Chris Brown led the Sooners with only 23 yards rushing on 12 carries. DeMarco Murray lost three yards, Jones lost four, Bradford lost 13 and Cameron Kenney lost 19.

“They were more physical up front than we were,” said Murray, who also had 116 yards receiving, 64 on one play. “They got the best of us today.”

581 jimster07...you are wrong and a typical hater...Texas fans did not cheer Bradford's injury.

You obviously weren't at the game, so keep stupid, hateful remarks like this to yourself.

id like to see how texas plays without colt mccoy..and they may have won last year..but ou had a far inferior defense compared to this year..so that we beat you last year thing isnt really relevant. I have the feeling alabama will play texas and well see who the loser is.. garanteed after hearing all the texas fans cheering at bradfords injury ill be waiting with bells on to see the horns epic fail.. in most situations I would want a big12 team to represent the conference but in this case i have to make an exception..

    Brandon L,

Have they already tigthened the marijuana regulations in your hometown?

Are you really talking up the ACC? Texas would destroy any of them. Okalahoma choked against Miami in Miami and blew the game and lost by ONE.

Texas is #1 in the country. You will all see.

UF won with the help of the refs. Bama looked anemic on offense. And the Horns' o-line couldnt look more uninterested in playing the game. Iowa is in the mix. These are the best 4 teams out there right now, and 3/4 of them looked like hammered crap (only cause I didnt watch Iowa).

    Keep on dissing Texas.

Just like ESPN did when they practically handed the trophy to USC, the "greatest team ever", before Texas beat them in the Rose Bowl.

It adds fuel to the fire.

As a complete outsider, both teams struggled. That is to be expected in a rivalry game. Texas did what it had to do to win, and thats what matters. Texas stayed undefeated that is also what matters. OU acts as though all the injuries are to blame (wasn't there a bunch of hype about Jones throwing for 6 touchdowns), and the other comment about losing by 5 pts total against rank teams . . .yadda yadda yadda . . . sounds like OU can't get it done in crunch time, not sure I would be proud of that! Texas has proved through the years if they are deserving they will get the chance (Like when they won the N.C. against U.S.C), I think they will get another shot at the N.C. this year (but they will have to keep doing what they have to do to win. The point is: to be successful you have to do, what you have to do (in other words take care of business good, bad or ugly) One team has, and one team has not . . . that is the difference.

I have no idea how Texas is ranked #3. They have the weakest schedule ever. The barely beat Texas Tech by 10 points at Home, which shows us how weak they are....and then they barely beat Oklahoma by 3 points (and that's not saying much)? Texas is weak. There's no way they should be ranked at the #3 spot. Until they prove it by actually playing great teams there's no way the commentators and poll should be giving in to the hype. And for those that say they still have to play Oklahoma state and Kansas.......Wow! You're reaching both of those teams are not as strong as they're rankings. Texas wouldn't be able to beat any of the top 3 ACC teams. The Big-12 isn't as strong a conference as they were last year. When will the commentators and pollsters see this?!?

Man oh man oh MAN!!!! This kind of thing is so tired. Both Texas and OU are good. And no matter which team you support, you have to agree that this is one of the best rivalries in the game. But too many on both sides try to pretend they know what's going to happen. Are you psychic? No. You never know WHAT the hell is gonna happen. Did you OU fans expect to lose against BYU or Miami? No. Did you expect the horns to beat you last year? No. I'm sure no one expected Kansas to fall to Colorado either. Grow up and quit pretending you know how UT would fair against Florida, because you don't. OU couldn't handle USC and said Texas couldn't either. But we took care of business where OU couldn't. Can we do the same against Florida? Who knows? No one. So don't pretend that you do.

And this whole weak schedule argument for UT is bs. Even if the non-conference schedule wasn't the best, our IN-CONFERENCE schedule was looking pretty stiff toward the end of last year. NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE IS NOT THE ENTIRE SCHEDULE!!!! The only reason people are saying its a weak schedule now is because OU, Tech and Okie State didn't live up to all of their hype.

I think you guys have too much time on your hands to be worried who is in the top 25 or not there is no doubt a reason why a team is in the rankings or not , like all of you armj chair critics who can't even play a game of marbles get over it, im a big 12 alumni and i think Texas was fortunate to win that game.andf Texas is no match for Florida, Alabama or USC.So all you haters go on and take your buts to bed, and shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. thank you!

I am an OU fan. Disappointed in the outcome yesterday but Texas won so congratulations all you horn fans.

I wasn't going to reply to all of you taking this opportunity to call OU Choklahoma and we're no good even if we are experiencing a large amount of injuries, etc. But then I read #551 Wowza....scroll down and read his nonsense first before reading my reply

.....so you must be a Texas fan. Saying a 3-3 OU team doesn't deserve to be in top 25...even though it shouldn't matter a bit to you what we're ranked. Three losses to ranked teams by a total of 5 points....yes, with a depleted team, and you, Austin homer, are mad about that? Dude, the Big XII and NC are out of the picture for us (OU). Why are spending your time hating on the fact that OU is still ranked. Typical Texas fan. Instead of winning with class you complain about what OU is ranked instead of looking ahead to Texas having a shot at THE title. Unbelievable.

Actually, I appreciate that! As an OU fan, it makes me a feel a little better about our season that Texas fans are still focusing on us rather than YOUR season. Take a cue Colt and Mack. They won with class. The gave OU props for over coming all the injuries and battling hard....realizing the injuries do make a difference and wishing Bradford well. Your fans...just can't do it, huh? Ok, you won by 3 points in a game with 8 turnovers. Take your win and go represent the Big XII well in the National Championship.

Just so you know, myself (and many other OU fans) will be rooting for Texas on the national stage because it makes MY TEAM and our conference look better. Congratulations again. Maybe this year you can get past Tech.

Colt McCoy lied on television immediately after the game with Oklahoma "I was sick all week". He lies every time he plays badly that he was "sick all week". How can he be quarterback, if he is constantly sick? He is a medical marvel. He is always "sick all week", but magically cured on game day.

Listen to all of these Chokelahoman's whining about their team being "beat-up" and "second-string." You seem to forget that WE BEAT YOUR BEST OFFENSE EVER LAST YEAR TOO!!!!!! What's your excuse now? LOSERS! Quit coming up with excuses. It was a competitive game and you lost (again). But don't give this crap about how banged up your team is because we beat you last year too. In fact, you have to come up with three more excuses since you like to refer to the past when we whip you butts.

Eric..if Florida loses the SEC game to Bama...no way they will be put in front of an undefeated Texas team or any other undefeated team...especially after the way the gators looked yesterday. It's a good thing Tebow is a religous man...he needed all the help he could get yesterday !
And for the record...this not only applies to Texas, but several other teams, Texas had a tougher schedule set this year...other teams pulled out, including the Arkansas team Florida survived yesterday. Arkansas was on the schedule and didn't want any !
