Kentucky rallies in 4th quarter to beat Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (AP)—Randall Cobb scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 4-yard run with 3:17 to play as Kentucky came from behind to defeat Auburn 21-14 Saturday night.

It was Kentucky’s first win over Auburn since 1966.

Cobb set up the winning score with a 61-yard zig-zagging run two plays earlier. Cobb rushed 12 times for 109 yards mostly on direct snaps from the Wildcats’ wildcat and Derrick Locke ran 19 times for 137 yards.

Kentucky (3-3, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) had tied the score with 6:29 to play on a 2-yard run by quarterback Will Fidler. Fidler came off the bench in the second half to lead the comeback. He replaced freshman Morgan Newton, who had started the game in the place of injured Mike Hartline.

Auburn (5-2, 2-2) held a 14-7 halftime lead, but was held scoreless by the Kentucky defense in the second half. Ben Tate rushed 31 times for 132 yards, his fifth 100-yard game of the season.

Auburn had one last chance to tie the game as the Tigers drove from their own 20 into Kentucky territory. The drive started with a 10-yard keeper by quarterback Chris Todd and an 18-yard run by Tate. But the drive was thwarted by two false start penalties and ended with 1:36 to play on fourth-and-11 from the Auburn 48 when Chris Todd’s pass to Terrell Zachery fell incomplete.

Both teams were ineffective passing the ball on a cold night. Kentucky gained only 75 yards in the air, while Auburn had 95 passing yards.

Defenses mostly dominated in the first half. Auburn’s Jake Ricks blocked Lones Seiber’s 38-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and Neiko Thorpe scooped it up and raced 69 yards for a touchdown.

It was the first score on a blocked field goal attempt for the Tigers since 1981, when Chris Martin returned a blocked kick 77 yards for a score against Georgia Tech.

Making his first start at quarterback, Newton was shaky at first, overthowing receivers and appeared to be nervous. But he started to warm up in the second quarter and scored on a 4-yard run with 9:02 to play in the half. Kentucky’s score came after a six-play, 53-yard drive that included a 23-yard sideline pass to Chris Matthews.

The game remained tied until Auburn took advantage of a poor Kentucky punt and got the ball at the Kentucky 48 at 5:26 in the half. The Tigers then took control of the ball, driving methodically to Tate’s 1-yard touchdown run with 6 seconds to play in the half.

Trainmaster....I completely understand how my post comes across. I'm not saying I have "better things to do" as far as rooting for my team. However, what I am saying, is that 70% of this state are Alabama fans (totally random guess), and the other are Auburn. That's assuming that 100% makes up fans for each team, which obviously isn't the case. But anyway, what I was trying to say is that for 6 straight years, us AU fans ribbed AL fans about winning 6 in a row, and all we heard was "we still won 9 in a row...Bear Bryant, how many championships do you have?". And now that AU is rebuilding (much quicker than the ten years it took AL, mind you) all I hear about is 36-0. What have you done for me lately. I'm fully aware that AU fans are the same to AL fans. Of course I want AU to beat Bama and all that stuff. What I'm trying to say, and very poorly I admit, is that people who actually attended the schools don't act all crazy and "get the gunz out" over the good-natured ribbing. And as much as many 'bama fans won't admit it, AU is only about 35 miles from GA, and about 50-60% of Auburn's student population are actually from GA. So the "big" game of the year is the UGA game. It's been tradition at AU to compete against 'bama, and that will never change. And according to ESPN, and most Alabamians (who are mostly 'bama fans), AU is the big rival. I know AL has TN and it's huge as well. But most AL students come from this state. A large % of AU students are from GA. The rivalry is huge, and always will be. By the way, kudos on the kids, house, and job. You are NOT the type of person I was calling out in my earlier post. You, my friend, are the small percent of educated fans that actually have something else going on for them. I was talking about the guy who lives in an RV in a park somewhere that couldn't even tell you where Tuscaloosa is. But he knows he's supposed to root for 'bama and call AU a "cow school". That guy has no idea that AU has blown up into such a nice place with new shopping malls, housing, and a fully renovated campus. I'm not talking about just the school, but everything that it supports. Without UA, Tuscaloosa would still exist. Not quite the same for AU. No ill will here. Complete ramble, I know.

UK is not a terrible team, I agree. As for the four turnovers, turnovers are part of the game. Hell, Bama had four turnovers, 10 penalties for 113 yards and still won the game.

Post 29- you do speak some truth, Auburn is in fact exactly what you stated. You are correct, if Bama had went undefeated instead of the Auburn, we would still be talking about it. That's because UA has passionate fans. So since you have so many better things to do, why the three paragraph post? I for one do keep up with recruiting, it is an important part of college football. I also just happen to be a huge college football fanatic, and Alabama fan. With that, go do whatever it is you do and leave the posting for true college fb fans. You stated you had a house, a job, a life. Well, I have a house, a career, three kids, work out five days a week, etc., etc., etc. I just happen to be very passionate about my team, and unlike you, I think lossing sucks.

To all the Alabama fans, Hate to tell ya, But your still overrated. And over the last ten years, AU has owned you hard core.

As for Auburn, I think everyone knew coming into this year it was going to be a rebuilding year for us.

Is Chris Todd the best quarterback there is. No. But he is the best option AU has right now. Rollison needs the time to mature a little bit before sticking him in to play in the SEC. Have you seen this kid?
He still looks like a HS baller.

All you Chizik haters- This is virtually the same team/players as last year. If any one thinks this years team is worst than last year then you need to open your eyes.

AU has some growing pains this year but still finishes the year at 8-4. Possibly 9-3.

Kentucky is not a bad team, And as Arkansas proved against Florida, They are also a pretty dang good team.

Compare BAma vs Kentucky boxscore, If not for 4 Kentucky T/O's then bama would have been spanked.

But anyways, AU will finish with at least 3 more wins.

Post #3. "nice... looks like a three quarterback system the rest of the year..."

A three quarterback system is why AU is struggling now. PICK 1 and live or die with him. Chris Todd will never get better if he gets pulled in a poor performance. It's called growing pains. The problem is too many people expect AU to be the best team in the SEC every year...NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

I think we should bench Chris Todd in favor of Tyrik Rollison. Let's face it, with Chris Todd the best we can hope for this season is 6-6. We should be able to beat Furman no matter who is at QB but if we LOSE to Furman, Chizik will be fired! With Tyrik Rollison, we give our opponents a different, young, and talented QB that they haven't seen yet. This gives us hope to possibly steal a win from Mississippi and Georgia. At the very least, we get the opportunity to open next season with a returning starter at QB with SEC game experience.

As for the firing of Gene Chizik: Losing to Kentucky at home was bad enough but a loss to Furman would destroy any hopes of him returning next season.

I LOVE college football! I LOVE IT! With that said, I recently moved to B'ham and I'm surrounded by Alabama fans. Not all, even most of them, are that bad. However, just because your sister's husband's cousin's best friend's daughter went to Alabama for a semester that doesn't give you some connection with the school. Most Bama fans that actually attended school there feel the same way I do. I graduated from AU, and I will love it whether or not the football team wins or not. The people that irritate me are the trailer park bums who keep reminiscing about how great their high school "playin' dayz wuz" and root for Bama because that's what's your supposed to do if you grew up here. We get it. It's a tradition. You've got Bear Bryant, all those Championships, own recruiting....etc. We all know. Just because your life isn't that interesting and you don't have anything to cheer about all year except Bama, you shouldn't have to rub it in ALL THE TIME. During football season is fine. But I really don't give a crap about some junior in high school that's a 4-star recruit that's thinking about going to FL or AL. I don't care. Get over it already. If it had been AL that went undefeated in '04 instead of AU, we'd still be hearing about that everyday and how AL got screwed. But since AU is the "red headed step child" it's OK that it was them that got screwed. Guess what, I'm over it. And I'm an AU alumni. Sure it sucked. And I'm sure Bama will beat the snot out of us this year, but I have a job, and home, and a life. I'll be fine with a W or an L. Of course a W would be great, but I'll deal if it's an L. I'm sure as **** not gonna be talking about it in March or April when I've got some other stuff going on. I know this sounds whiney, and I'm fully aware of that. But geez, get a freakin life already!

u definitely dont get W's by racking up over 75 yards in penalty points....
Auburn's not getting beat by opponents...
Auburn's defeating themselves...its NOT because the other team is that good...im just sayin, quit the bull@#$% and talk REAL SEC football....they will do better...Go Tigers!
    WAAAR EAGLE.

FYI...Bama wasnt always number one either....they been had the talent before the Saban era..duh.

Honestly, Auburn has not looked good all year. They were very fortunate to find themselves 5-0. The wildcat offense is still a joke. Gus Malzahn runs the same busted plays over and over again. How many times is this guy going to call a QB draw and a reverse? You are an offensive coordinator and that is the best you can come up with---a QB draw and a reverse?? I said it at the beginning of the season, Auburn's best chance at returning to a great team is with the sophmores and freshmen. Start Tyrik Rollison, Emory Blake, and DeAngelo Benton...NOW! They may not lead AU to victory this year but at least they will get some very valuable experience against some very tough SEC teams which can help them prepare for next year.

Post 10, yeah we having been foaming for a long time now, thanks for that great hire, 2nd rate! Blubberville knew when to leave, he saw the writing on the wall. Bama no longer on probation, team gets waxed, recruiting had went down the tubes, he knew when to leave, hence this is what you have a mediocre team and coach, everyone was singing the praises just two weeks ago, my how things change.

First off, great win on the road UK! Second off, Earth to Auburn, Earth to Auburn, your team is falling apart, the 5-0 start involved some luck with teams beating themselves, that's not happening now. Chris Todd is just that, Chris Todd nothing special. UK had two back run for over 100 yards. How does that happen? I hope ya'll can pull it out against LSU, but after watching the past two weeks, I am not real sure your gonna even win 7 games.

Until Auburn cans its A.D. they will have problems getting a quality head coach and staff. Secondary agendas don't cut it in big time college football.

I've never ONCE been a Chizik fan and it's looking like our last win of the year will be against Furman. That was a DUMB hire and unless we clean out the athletic department at auburn, it's gonna be a long losing tenure coming up. Tuberville is somewhere laughing right now. I miss you Tubs.

Bama fans shouldn't be that happy. Their game tonight revealed a QB who is suspect. Alabama passing game is inconsistent. They have a serious offensive weakness at QB position. McElroy stare down his receivers. He doesn't seems to know how to eye fake the defenders off. He is also very inconsistent when under pressure.

Auburn was flagged 10 times for 75 yards. Kentucky had 0 flags. Thus, it is clear that the Tigers beat themselves. On the other hand, Kentucky overcame a great deal and the Big Blue deserves credit. Both teams will get ok bowls this year, but Auburn has the brighter future.
