No. 1 Florida escapes with 23-20 win vs. Arkansas

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Tim Tebow stood on the sideline with his eyes closed. He couldn’t bear to watch, not after seeing so much go wrong all afternoon.

Maybe he should have peeked. After all, he missed what might go down as the most important field goal in Florida history.

Tebow directed a 69-yard drive in the final minutes, setting up Caleb Sturgis’ 27-yard field goal with 9 seconds remaining that gave the top-ranked Gators a 23-20 win against Arkansas on Saturday.

“Once I heard everybody cheering and opened my eyes and saw we made the field goal, that was fun,” Tebow said.

The rest of the game wasn’t nearly as enjoyable.

On a day when little went right for the Gators (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference), Tebow took over down the stretch and helped extend the nation’s longest win streak to 16 games. He threw for 255 yards and a touchdown, ran for 69 more and saved his best plays for when Florida needed him most.

That final drive may have been Tebow’s Heisman moment. It kept Florida unbeaten and likely No. 1 in the country. It also may have preserved the team’s chances of repeating as national champion.

“I always knew we had a shot,” Tebow said. “We were just going to keep believing until the last second.”

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner threw for 30 yards and ran for 22 on the final drive. Three plays stood out: His 12-yard pass to Riley Cooper on third down (Cooper fell down, then caught the ball on one knee) and consecutive runs that gained 16 yards and put Sturgis well within his comfort zone.

Sturgis overcame an early miss and finished with three field goals, including a 51-yarder in the third. For much of the day, it was Florida’s best play.

Just about everything that could go wrong for the Gators did. They had four turnovers, three dropped passes, were gashed against the run and gave up more big plays in one game than they had all season. They missed a field goal and scored once in their first four trips inside the 20-yard line.

“You usually don’t win that kind of game,” coach Urban Meyer said.

But after struggling to move the ball on a relatively cool, sun-drenched afternoon, Tebow led the Gators to scores on three of their final four possessions.

He hooked up with Deonte Thompson on a 77-yard TD that gave Florida its first lead of the game, 13-10 with 2:59 to play in the third. Another deep pass to Thompson drew a pass-interference penalty and set up Jeff Demps’ 10-yard TD run that tied the game at 20 midway through the fourth.

Tebow put Florida in position for the game-winner with a 14-play drive that took almost all the time off the clock.

“When it came down to it, you knew we were going to play with a little bit more heart and our guys were going to dig a little bit deeper, and they did,” Tebow said.

The Razorbacks (3-3, 1-3) entered the game with the league’s worst-rated defense. But they hardly looked the part Saturday. They stuffed Florida’s high-powered running game, sacked Tebow six times and forced the Gators into several mistakes.

“I think somebody held onto the ball too long,” Meyer said, putting much of the blame on his star player. “Six sacks and four turnovers? I’m going to get him in here and start yelling at him. We’ve got to get that fixed immediately.”

A week after knocking off Auburn, Arkansas showed it’s making fast progress under second-year coach Bobby Petrino.

Ryan Mallett threw for 224 yards, Dennis Johnson ran for 107 in place of injured starter Michael Smith (hamstring) and Greg Childs caught four passes for 135 yards.

Arkansas made a few costly mistakes, though.

Mallett overthrew fullback Van Stumon, who was wide open in the end zone, and Arkansas settled for a field goal that tied it at 13 late in the third. Then Alex Tejada yanked a 38-yard field goal with 3:08 remaining that would have put his team ahead.

“We played our hearts out all night,” defensive end Jake Bequette said. “It hurts. Right there with No. 1 team in the nation. Take the positives from this: Can play anyone, anywhere, anytime.”

Added Mallett: “We had a chance to win against the No. 1 team in the country and we couldn’t pull it out.”

Tebow did. The finish, though, probably won’t let Florida forget the start.

The Gators had three turnovers on consecutive possessions in the first half, including two fumbles by Tebow and another by tight end Aaron Hernandez.

“The worst first half we’ve ever play,” Meyer said. “I’m not pleased with where we’re at. But I understand the game and understand where we’re at.”

Defense kept the Gators close. They sacked Mallett four times and pressured him often enough that he completed just 12 of 27 passes. They did it without three starters, too.

Star linebacker Brandon Spikes, who entered the game with a team-high 32 tackles and three sacks, injured his left groin early in the game and did not return. Defensive tackles Lawrence Marsh (ankle) and Jaye Howard (knee) didn’t even suit up.

“I don’t think they really missed a step,” Mallett said. “We just have a good offense. You’ve got to give us a little credit. They’ve never seen an offense like ours all year and probably won’t for the rest of the year.”

One thing I have noiticed is the lack of arrogant Florida fans who just had "we won quit whinning like all loser do" type of post !!! No kind of informative or insight on the game just the pop in two liner that said "Florida is number one, we won, u guys lost and @#$% about the officials" kinda of post!!!!! Good luck Florida from a Hogs fan winning the title. Becuase it ain't going to happen this year Gator boys!!!!

MarkW/Post 985- Sounds like what you wanted to say you didn't!!!! A lot of admonisity towards Florida, yes I got that, but that will be answered in the SEC Championship game which I beieve, alone with many other college fans believe will be answerered. I stated locally in Arkansas 3 weeks ago that Alabama is the better teasm in the SEC, defensivily, offenssivly, they are strong, big and punishining!!! They do not put up 52 points but they win 17 to 6 or 24 to 10 because they are more of an old school type of team. I am a Arkansas fan, for the record I never whinned like some Arkansas fans have and I am feel their frustration, it is far more then the lost to Florida, its a like of respect to the so called Hillbilly State of Arkansas!!!!! I say to the those fans and the to the great state of Arkansas, be humble, be patient, in the words of BTO (Bachman/Turner/Overdrive) YOU AIN"T SEEN NOTHING YET!!!!!!!! To you Mark, please say whats on your mind?????? spell out to us stupid South Eastern Fans!!!!

TO BILLY / POST 977...I only listed the top ranked 6 teams as I found them on BCS. Arkansas is not in the top few so I didn't list but here is the rundown (Shows Arkansas 8th). By the way, You don't have to argue with me about Arkansas. They always play Bama tough and they will be in a bowl game this year. I agree they have had a tough schedule this year.

To from the real world, Post 974 who insulted Arkansas by saying Razorbutts. You had no point, no opinion and nothing objective to say, you just wanted to insult and berate. I want to apologize to you because you were picked on growing up, or your parents didn't love you enough, or your self esteem is so low because of something. I am sorry that you must insult people and place drival on line to make yourself feel good. But there is one good thing, there are support groups which u can find that will help you get through your tough time in life. Stay strong and don't stop fighting, God Bless!!!!

To Mustyman, Post 967, whon has lumped all of Arkansas as a whinning losing team, who has it all sewn up by the points left on the field and the poor play bf Florida, atleast he didn't go further and say a bad Arkansas Team, guess he knew better then that!!! Okay Musty, Gators Missed one FG, Fumbled 4 times, Tebow Missed a pass, Now for Arkansas, Ryan went 12-27, missed a Touchedown pass to the fullback that was there, Childs dropped a Touchdown pass, Tejada missed two field goals, 97 yeards penailized to Arkansas, 16 to home Florida, one obvious wrong call which was confirmed by the NCAA, two other questionable calls, big calls and the officiating crew being suspended 2 games and their bowl game might be afftected. Now I never @#$%ed about the officiating, go back and see my post, but for u to say that you mighty Gators should have blown us out by half time is something else, its quite stupid in my humble opinion. Don't sum all opponants of a team which your team has just beat as whiners and complainers Mr. Expert, and oh yea, how about watching a game as a knowlegable football fan and not a biased fan one time!!!! Just one time Mr. Musty!!!!

Best damn 3-3 team in nation I bet we are better then 13th ranked through 25!!!! Arkansas aside....The SEC just suspended the whole crew........anyone who does not think that FLorida's position and ranking did not play a role in the officiating has not watched college football. And the minute the SEC gets some heat they cut the refs loose.

If Alabama and Florida meet in the SEC championship, then that is good for the SEC and good for business. So why is anyone surprised the referees made these calls? It's a business.

I have to disagree with you the real world, I watched the game, while I admit there was some bad calls, the bottomline, both teams missed opportunities, the thing is, that last missed field goal cost us. If your a Florida fan, your team won, but it didn't dominate us, no way. We had our chances to beat you and didn't enough said! There was no luck to it, laying all things aside, Florida will not beat Alabama in the S.E.C., they aren't the best team, Alabama is.

BTW. If you want to compare that game to the regular complaints about ref's, just go watch it on youtube. Seriously, if you can sit through the replays and come away with any conclusion other than the refs were intent on FL maintaining their ranking, then quit wasting everyone else's time on here by typing your blind drivel.

Hey mustyman. Which 2 BAD calls are you referring to? (1) The imaginary pass interference called on Arkansas in the endzone or (2) The imaginary personal foul on M.Sheppard that the SEC has already apologized for? or(3) the magical extra yard tebow got from the refs to get a first down or (4) the mystical Florida field goal well after the play clock expired? Or no, after all the imaginary fouls on Arkansas, you must be referring to the NO call in the endzone when Arkansas was going to intercept and end the game but the FLA reciever bowled the defender out of the way in front of the same refs that "SAW" Arkansas commit imaginary infraction after imaginary infraction. Well, the SEC did admit that it was a judgement call. I would like to see the paystub that Mr. Curles "judgement" was able to cash after that game. Please, if you didn't actually watch the game, don't make ignorant statements about it. Sure, Arkansas didn't execute every play and score on every opportunity. But the refs made it clear that even if they had, they would make sure that FL would get the final opportunity.

Florida shouldn't be in the top 10. If you argue any point other than the fact that the worst D beat up on Florida and Florida's best play was sitting on the sidelines HOPING the HOGs would make a mistake.

Florida with all of their Troy, Charleston southern, Altamonte High School, The Girl Scouts of America Troop 2468...who do we appreciate...Soft Schedule, Soft Schedule...Yeaaaaaaaaa Soft Schedule. SEC = Soft Easy Conference. We aren't fooled by your 2 or 3 games on a schedule that is an absolute JOKE for a Team of what we thought was the caliber of Florida. JOKES. Not a top 10 schedule deserves to not be ranked in the top 10

    Projected BCS Schedule Strength

Highest rated team is projected to win all unplayed games...i.e., FLA 12-0, ALA 12-0, Iowa 12-0, VT 10-2, etc. then the end of season would come out to these numbers.

I love how Florida won this game ONLY because of two "bad calls"....one of which really was a bad call....but because of nothing else. Florida played uncharacteristically throughout the game...fumbled FOUR times and allowed the leading Heisman trophy candidate to be sacked SIX times, dropped a HUGE touchdown pass early, missed a FG, basically left points all over the field, or else Florida would've put this game away during the 3rd quarter probably. But they didn't. They let a good team in Arkansas hang around. A good team in Arkansas that had AMPLE opportunities to beat the #1 team in the land. Shanked FGs, missed touchdown passes, and penalties KILLED Arkansas, but not TWO penalties...there were NINE penalties (almost as many penalty yards as rushing yards) that destroyed their chances of beating Florida. I love how the losing team always has something other than the play on the field to say lost the game for them. You guys sound like Georgia fans this year, who havent lost a single game, the refs have blown every single one of them. They're still undefeated apparently.....

Uh...where are you all getting your strength of schedule numbers? The USA Today shows the BCS SOS numbers as:
Fla is 46th, Bama is 26th, Texas is 56th, Boise is 38th, Cinnci is 71st and Iowa is 20th. Go to USA Today...
    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2009-10-19-bcs-capsules_N.htm?csp=34
Fla couldn't be 8th with only LSU as a ranked team played so far.
To some who say that FLA shouldn't be number one though...I subscribe to the theory if you are number at the end of last year you stay number one until someone knocks you off...ergo...if you haven't lost then you stay where you are. So regardless of ANYTHING that has happened thus far FLA SHOULD be still ranked number one with the rest of us clamoring to get at them. That being said...Roll Tide...see yall in the SEC Championship I hope! We want another shot at you and Tebow.

It sucks that 364 days of the year, Florida could beat Arkansas no problem. The one time that everything was falling in to place for us to win, a streak of bad/no-calls took away any chance of us winning.

But it was good to see us hang in there against the #1 team in the nation. We can say something that no other team this year can say "We were beating Florida."

The pass interference call was questionable. The personal foul should have been a no call, and if anything, have gone against the Florida player who initiated the contact. Then there was the no call on the offensive pass interference where the Florida player was climbing all over the Arkansas defender's back.
