Sheffield, Texas Tech upsets Nebraska 31-10

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)—Texas Tech took a break from its win-with-offense style.

The Red Raiders’ 31-10 upset of No. 15 Nebraska clearly belonged to the defense.

Steven Sheffield passed for a touchdown and ran for two in his first road start, but the offense went dormant for long stretches of the second half, and the defense never let Nebraska back in the game.

“We were losing yards as fast as we were gaining them there for a while,” Tech coach Mike Leach said. “We tested them in about every way that we could. Bad field position. The offense goes three-and-out and then three-and-out. It was like, ‘What are you going to do about this, defense?’ They just kept stepping up.”

Texas Tech (5-2, 2-1 Big 12) won for the first time in four road games since last October. The Raiders came to Lincoln with the nation’s second-ranked offense, but they managed just 259 yards—263 under their average—and mustered only 47 in the second half.

Still, the effort was good enough, largely because of a defense that held Nebraska (4-2, 1-1) to 285 yards and the Huskers’ lowest point total since a 41-6 loss to Missouri in 2007.

The loss further exposed Nebraska’s offensive shortcomings against quality defenses. For the second straight week Zac Lee and the Huskers did next to nothing for three quarters.

Last week they were able to rally for four touchdowns in the fourth and beat Missouri 27-12.

There would be no late comeback against Tech.

“We didn’t execute from the beginning to the end,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. “On offense, we didn’t come off the ball. We didn’t catch the ball. We didn’t make the right reads at quarterback. We didn’t run the ball effectively.

“On defense, we didn’t make plays. You can sit there and ask all of the questions you want in the world. It comes down to we got beat because we didn’t make plays. We got outplayed and outcoached.”

Lee was pulled in favor of Cody Green in the middle of the fourth quarter, but offensive coordinator Shawn Watson wasn’t ready to say whether he would re-open the competition for the starting quarterback’s job before next Saturday’s game against Iowa State.

Lee and Green were harassed all afternoon by Tech’s front seven. Defensive end Brandon Sharpe had four of Tech’s five sacks, running his season total to eight. Sharpe also batted down a pass. Brian Duncan added eight tackles, and strong safety Franklin Mitchen had seven stops and intercepted Green after the Huskers had driven inside the 15 in the fourth quarter.

“I was just out there having fun, running hard, trying to get noticed,” Sharpe said. “We were just working hard. Come off the ball and good things will happen.”

Sheffield, who passed for 490 yards passing and seven touchdowns in his debut as the starter against Kansas State last week, was nearly perfect early, completing 14 of his first 16 passes against the Huskers. Playing for the injured Taylor Potts, Sheffield went 9-for-16 in the second half and finished with 234 yards.

“Second half, the offense slumped but the defense picked up our slack. Thank God for the defense,” Sheffield said.

Sheffield picked up where he left off last week against K-State. He completed all six of his passes while leading the Red Raiders on an 80-yard touchdown drive to start the game, finishing with a 16-yarder to Baron Batch.

“He went out there and elevated his level of play, marched down there and scored,” Leach said. “That electrified the whole defense. The entire offense for sure. And, I think our team.

Sheffield couldn’t get anything going on his next series, but Tech’s defense provided a big lift. Nebraska’s Niles Paul fumbled after taking a lateral from Lee, and Daniel Howard picked up the ball and ran it back 82 yards for a 14-0 lead.

“After I fumbled, that was a big letdown,” Paul said. “Nobody knew what was going on. It threw us off our game.”

The loss comes a day after Pelini finally handed out the Blackshirts, a tradition dating to the 1960s where the defensive starters wear black practice jerseys as a symbol of excellence.

Pelini waited until midseason for the second straight year to unveil the Blackshirts, and nose tackle Ndamukong Suh said Pelini should take them back.

“It had nothing to do with our black shirts, yellow shirts, white shirts or whatever ….,” Pelini said. “It’s not about blackshirts.”

    Dear Posting Group..

I quote from a fellow poster, "Whats all this talk about Texas Techs domination in college football? This is the Husker site right?"

You've got to be kidding me? Since when did a Yahoo posting thread about a game that involved both Nebraska and Texas Tech become a Nebraska fan club?

Whats all this talk about Texas Techs domination in college football? This is the Husker site right? How many times has Tech won the Big 12? or even the Big 12 south? One big win here or there wont bring home the crystal football. Despite the huskers low offensive performance we still had more total yards than that big badass red raider offense. Not that Im blaming the refs on the loss but there were some pretty @#$%y calls that totally terminate any kind of drive. Leach is a ballsy coach that does make some crazy calls which may be great, or destroy you. Have fun finsishing 3rd in the Big 12 south, maybe. When I see Texas Tech win a national championship, I have a feeling it will be very cold outside.

TonyC - I agree with Lanceo29, the comment you made was very typical of a "teasip". The arrogance in your comment is so strong that I can smell it. Why don't you along with all of the Texas fans finally learn to accept the fact that Tech is up-and-rising and that y'all aren't all y'all are cracked up to be. You are the most overrated team in college football. Face it you know good and well that id Stephen Sheffield would have started this season Texas Tech would 7-0 so far this season. You think you so big and bad because you beat us by 10 points at your home field where the refs are reputedly known for being biased against the visitors. Y'all are a sad breed of people. You see how we are with A&M, Tech is starting to dominate them and we're kicking them while they're still down. Be for warned that little brother can hold his own now and that Texas is next in line for an era of ass whoopin's from Tech just like A&M is getting right now and has been for that last 10 years. Hell, the 2008 season when we beat y'all took some of your recruiting away from you in the spring. Ifwe can make an 11-1 team out of nothing, imagine what we could do with Texas' and A&M's blue-chip recruits. Think about it. Scary isn't it?

Are you from like 10 years in the past or something? I don't see anyone talking about the "Husker Empire" anywhere.

When Nebraska takes on 3 mediocre teams tromps them in all three games, and then toots their horn like they have really accomplished something. This is arrogance and stupidy all rolled into one. It's like some 300 lb bully pounding the heck out of 97 lb weakling and bragging as if he'd really acomplished something great.

Time for all the Nebraska fans to COWBOY UP AND MAN UP act like decent people instead of the mouthy, pig headed, idiots that you currently are.

You sound educated and don't think your a big loss to the great state of Nebraska, at least now the state doesn't have to pay your unemployment check, if you didn't already, take the rest of your dumb ass family to the state you moved to...PLEASE.

TonyC - that is a pretty ignorant comment typical of many TU fans. It's not a comment any of the staff or players that actually play for Texas would dare make. They know better. You hide behind them when they are winning and then whine when they don't. "oh you got lucky", "oh, the refs were not on our side for once", "oh see, I told you Colt McCoy sucks" (that was an actual quote from a TU kid last year) It is funny to watch you talk about how high and mighty you think TU is. 16-13 against a battered and broken OU is DEFINITELY not dominating. Read what everybody is saying about TU. "horrible performance", "most overrated team in the rankings". What the hell is a sand aggie? Doesn't even make any sense. TU is on their way down. Tech is on their way up. Deal with it and accept that your "little" brother is now capable of kicking your A** anytime now.

Here's the problem in a nutshell: 1. Bo Pellini is a good defensive coach. The second half against the Red Raiders was excellent. And the Blackshirts will continue to improve on D. No question about it. 2. Pellini is NOT an offensive coach. And Nebraska is NOT suited to West Coast offense football or even some Pellini minor repair of it. Let's scrap all the remaining vestiges of the disasterous Callahan-Pedersen pass-focused era, go back to the option, keep Pellini brand defense, and we will start winning championships again. The only thing that Solich couldn't do was recruit. Pellini can probably recruit. We should have kept the system in place back in the day when we un-ceremoniously dumped Solich. I am still not sold Pellini is a great head coach. Not sure he is smart enough, with the demeanor of a consistently successful head coach. I think he has the demeanor of a great defensive coach. Osborne should bring back a storied Nebraska offensive coordinator from the glory days, and get back to playing Husker smash-mouth football, with a few more wrinkles. No one could stop us when we played lights out D, and hurt people running the ball. We should never lose to Texas Tech. If we had any kind of offense, we wouldn't have.

    109. Out classed... really? After reading many of the blogs on this page I beg to differ. I have always had a lot of respect for both schools, but I have to give it to Nebraska fans; with the exception of a couple they aren't acting like children on this blog. I feel very bad for the Tech fans on here that are embarrassed to read what some of their fan base has written. It's very sad to see. Nebraska fans; keep your head up, things will turn around. You truly are the greatest fans in college football. Tech fans, don't worry, most of us outside of this small rivalry can see that most of your fan base has class.

Chipswon (post#114) ....I'm not sure even God could help. No matter what anyone says, The SEC RULES College Football! Pure and simple. National Champions THREE years in a row and it will be FOUR after this year. Look for the trophy to be in Tuscaloosa this year.
Hate the SEC if you want people but, you can't argue with success. Three in a row and going on four! By the way, I reside in Nebraska but, telling it like it is.

Nebraska's top rated top 5 Blackshirt Defense ran into Techs top rated offense. Something had to give. It did. Tech wins against the ranked Huskers. If you are a Tech fan, great game. If you are a Huskers fan, theres still plenty of football to be played.

Huskers offense ran into Techs own Blackshirt Defense we now find out. Techs D played great. Shut down an offense that dominated Tech on the time of possession last year. Tech did not need last second heroics this year. Last year the game was a dogfight, a knockdown drag out nose to nose battle. This year, Techs D shut down the Huskers O. Great game. Go Tech

Great game Tech. Why was it a good win? Because Nebraska is a good team again. Not great like they once were, but still good. Somebody posted and asked why Tech fans seemed so angry. If you lived in Texas and had to read in the papers EVERY SINGLE day about TU and even A & M (who loses all the time now) and how great they were and then a little sidebar about Tech beating a ranked team you would be sore too. And then year after year the media completely ignores Tech being good but keeps overrating teams like OU, A&M, TU, etc. I mean come on, OU has lost 2, now 3 games and keeps staying ranked.

From what I've seen, Nebraska has some good fans and it's a premier program and school. Fans are loyal to no end. Tech has good fans too. But try to understand why some of us are so angry. TTU is good and deserves to be thought of that way.

How is this an upset? Texas Tech has beaten Nebraska the last 4 times they have played. When Nebraska traveled to Lubbock in 2004, the final score was Texas Tech 70, Nebraska 10. Tech beat Nebraska in Lincoln in 2005 34-31. Last year in Lubbock, Tech beat Nebraska 37-31. So where is the stunning upset in all of this? It's not surprising at all.

As a lifelong Husker fan and a long time ticket holder it is sad to see where the Huskers are now. But give credit to TT they played a better game than we did. Nebraska's history is just that ,history. A true fan supports their team all the time ,not just when it is popular or easy to do so. Some changes need to be made and hopfully NU will learn from the game. Go Big Red

I lived in Nebraska for a number of years and I still follow NE college football. They really do love them Huksters.

To me, its entertaining...but still, it's just a bunch of kids playing a game. How that can turn into a threats, anger, and violence as displayed by "Chris" in response to "high_endurance2000" is odd to say the least.

I have no great love for Nebraska. Generally, I see it as a racist community and I was glad to leave. LIke most college educated minorities I couldn't get a good job until I left the state. Now that I think about it, I guess I do like to watch them loose...too bad I missed the last game.

Loved watching the Huskers get beaten down by a far superior team. Loved watching my neighbors near tears as they watched the demise of their team.

Husker/Nebraska fans truly are wacko. These people actually go in to seek counseling from a professional when their team loses a game or has a poor season.

Definately these Nebraska Corn Husker fans are truly mentally ill people.
