Sam Houston State overtakes Nicholls State 44-21

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP)—James Aston ran for three touchdowns and nearly half his team’s rushing yards Saturday as Sam Houston State beat Nicholls State 44-21.

Aston carried the ball 13 times for 81 yards as Sam Houston State (3-2, 1-0 Southland Conference) outran the Colonels (1-4, 0-1) 173-149 in the conference opener for both teams.

Nicholls State’s Anton Robinson scored two touchdowns—a 68-yard catch and a recovered fumble. The team’s quarterback LaQuintin Caston completed 8 of 15 attempts for 172 yards.

Trey Hopson also tried to help Nicholls State by rushing for a TD in the third quarter.

Sam Houston quarterback Blake Joseph threw for 269 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more. Kicker Miguel Antonio hit a field goal from 42 yards out.
