Special teams, defense carry No. 2 Texas, 38-14

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—First came the boos. Then came the chants of “Beat OU!”

In between, No. 2 Texas turned a stagnant effort against Colorado into a 38-14 win Saturday night to stay undefeated going into their annual grudge match against No. 19 Oklahoma.

Earl Thomas returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown and Ben Wells recovered a blocked punt for another score to help the Longhorns (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) pull away in the second half.

Jordan Shipley added a punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also caught a 39-yard touchdown pass in the first half and finished with 147 yards on 11 receptions.

“It was a tough game and a physical game and one we really needed going into next week,” Texas coach Mack Brown said.

It wasn’t exactly a confidence booster with the Sooners up next Saturday in Dallas.

Colorado (1-4, 0-1), which managed just 127 total yards, led 14-3 in the first half. The Buffaloes blocked a field goal attempt, forced two turnovers by Colt McCoy and held the Longhorns to 313 yards, their lowest output of the season and 200 yards below their average.

“When everybody talks about how bad Colorado is all week, it’s really hard to go out there and take them serious,” Brown said.

Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins burned Texas twice early on play-action passes for touchdowns. The first to Patrick Devenny capped Colorado’s first drive. The second to Riar Greer came in the second quarter after McCoy fumbled on the Longhorns 6.

After one Texas drive stalled, McCoy unsnapped his chin strap in frustration and stood at midfield with his hands on his hips.

“We were in a battle all night,” Longhorns wide receiver Dan Buckner said.

But McCoy to Shipley can cure a lot of ills.

Shipley was wide open when he turned around Colorado cornerback Jalil Brown on a fake and McCoy hit him in stride for Texas’ first touchdown with 46 seconds left in the half.

It didn’t solve everything. Texas’ first two drives of the second half ended without reaching midfield, prompting some boos from the crowd of 101,152.

Special teams and defense quickly turned the boos into cheers.

Goodwin, a freshman with world-class speed in the 100 meters, turned the game with a 12-yard burst when he slipped through a seam in the right side of Colorado’s punt protection to get a clean block on the kick.

The ball spun backward toward the end zone and sat up neatly for Wells to scoop and score from the 3 for a 17-14 lead.

“We expect things like that on special teams,” Shipley said. “Those plays are so important, especially in close games.”

Colorado was still in the game when Jalil Brown intercepted a Shipley drop deep in Texas territory. But Hawkins threw behind his receiver, making it an easy pickoff for Thomas and the safety sprinted along the sideline for the score.

The 92-yard return tied for the second-longest in Texas history and was the longest for the Longhorns since 1936.

Hawkins, who was 6 of 18 passing for 68 yards with two interceptions, was pulled for sophomore Tyler Hansen on Colorado’s next drive. After the game, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, Cody’s father, announced that Hansen is now the Buffaloes’ starter.

“He’s gotta make that throw,” Dan Hawkins said of his son. “(Hansen) is such a trooper and we’re just gonna go with him.”

Shipley made it 31-14 with his punt return, weaving through the middle of the field for about 20 yards before breaking to his left to find a clear path to the touchdown.

By the time it was over, the Texas fans still in the stadium were chanting “Beat OU!”

McCoy wasn’t ready to join in the fun just yet.

“We’re going to enjoy this win,” McCoy said.

now that the walls of secrecy behind which the ncaa and the conferences and the bcs or bust coaches and schools have operated for decades have been crushed into the dust , the list of schools with full time athletes with 2nd grade or lower reading levels is so long that listing the exceptions to the florida state standards and practices is much easier.
those exceptions include stanford, boston college, ucla, vanderbilt, ohio state, penn state, army, navy, air force, notre dame, byu, and very few others.
if anyone is searching for florida, usc, michigan, alabama, auburn, lsu, or cal on the short list, those schools are not there because they operate their football and athletic departments according to the florida state standards and practices, hiding the full time athletes, with minor exceptions, in courses with zero or no academic content, even within schools which have fine academic departments for real students.
now that the walls of secrecy of the ncaa, the conferences, and troy(aka troy) and all schools have been torn down, prepare yourselves for millions of pages of great reading material.
shredding and deleting will not work now.
we had been after those walls of secrecy for years before we it the jackpot in the ncaa/florida state case.the ncaa and the conferences and the schools on the long list spent millions in attorneys' fees trying to fight us and make us go away.
there is nothing in the florida laws which does not also exist in every single state and at the federal level.
the schools, like usc(aka troy), that think they fit into some special exemption from disclosure because the are private, not public, institutions all take money from the federal and state governments, as well as from publicly traded companies in which we all own shares.
    the doc hates the bcs.
we hate all corruption and dishonesty in college sports, the landscape of which will never be the same after the ncaa threw in the towel in the florida state case.

Being a Tech fan, I don't think Texas is going to slaughter OU. OU is a more physical, balanced team than Tech and they will be ready to play. Also, Tech was beaten in Austin by a mere 10 points, and the Red River Rivalry is in the Cotton Bowl. Expect OU to be fired up and get ready for a close game.

As a BSU fan its strange to see that Colorado's Coach Hawkins benched his son, QB Cody Hawkins. That had to be a difficult call.

Texas had a bad game on offense, but so did OU. They beat a Baylor team without their starting QB. The Sooners kept driving down and getting field goals. The running game was not good for UT. The OU receivers couldn't catch a pass. Baylor just threw the game away. I think that UT bounces back, but it will be close. UT by 7 to 10 points.

Big mistake moving Texas to number 3 in the AP poll.Whats going to fire Texas up even more is where they will be in the BCS poll next week.Early predictions are showing Texas in the #5 or #6 spot in the BCS poll with Virginia Tech and Boise State moving ahead of them and possibly USC.This is just the thing to get Texas so fired up they will come in and annihilate the rest of their opponents.Next game with OU...Texas-76 Oklahoma-3

Texas will not win with just special teams and defense against OU (or any other ranked team). Colt and the offense better wake up fast because they have cost us the #2 ranking for the lack luster performance they have showed against crappy teams. I believe they will go undefeated this year, but the BCS looks for more than wins. They look at how you take care of teams you should, that means beat them from the first whistle. Wake up Texas! Hook'em Horns!!!!!!

I love seeing the Texas haters come and attack us and say how we suck and this and that. But the bottom line is it doesn't matter how much you win by as long as you win. It doesn't matter though because we will continue to win and on to Pasadena. So just keep talking about how bad we are and etc and we will see who is playing for the BCS Championship in January and we will see who the best team is in the country come that night.

Texas plays at the level of their compitition, then turns it on when needed. This team is too deep w/ blue chip studs from the GREAT STATE of TEXAS. The Longhorns will smoke OU. As for the coaching staff, they are second to none, and for all of you so called experts who hate on Texas HOOK "EM HORNS !!!

What's with these USC fans hanging around here? USC blows, lost to a crappy team, WILL NOT play for the title. There will be two unbeaten teams at the end of the year. If not, USC will never be seriously looked at to play for the title. Eat it and shut up. There's always next year.
I watched both Texas and Okrahomo play yesterday. The Texas game was a much better game to watch. Okrahomo looked bad. The real Okrahomo team of last year would never have to “field goal” a weaker team to death.
Understand that Texas played base offence and base defense. They were not about to show anything that Orkahomo could study on tape to prep for next week. Orkahomo’s attitude was win against Baylor at all costs. They had no choice.

Texas will pay again for their weak schedule, Colrado should have never been in this game. Notice the record of the teams Texas has played. Oklahoma will be their first test and I feel it could go either way. OU has their quarterback back but still with out their two best receivers so Texas should win. Either way, it should be a good match.

Tommy 55 - That is just fan talk. Bama, Florida and VT would beat Tx at this point in the season. I hate USC but I think that they would beat Tx right now. I am pretty sure, based on the Tx game and the Okl game that I watched, Okl will beat them. Right now the ranking should be.
