LAS VEGAS (AP)—Harvey Unga, Max Hall and No. 18 BYU put up some big numbers Saturday night at overmatched UNLV’s expense.

Unga ran for three touchdowns and 149 yards, and Hall completed 21 of 27 passes for 320 yards and two more scores in BYU’s 59-21 victory. The Cougars (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West) gained 611 yards and led by double digits for the final 48 minutes.

“I thought the team played well and played a complete game,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “We improved in a lot of areas.

UNLV coach Mike Sanford fell to 13-40 in five seasons with the Rebels (2-4, 0-2).

“First thing is to give BYU credit,” Sanford said. “They are a very good football team. They are the 18th-ranked football team in the country and played like it.”

The Rebels scored 5 minutes into the second half on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Omar Clayton to Michael Johnson to make it 24-14, but BYU only needed four plays to respond.

Hall’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Pitta put the Cougars back up by 17 and the Rebels weren’t a threat again. BYU added a 1-yard run from Jo Jo Pili and a 15-yard touchdown pass to JJ Di Luigi for a 45-14 lead at the end of the quarter.

“Max is the cornerstone of this team and this offense,” Unga said. “Hes a great leader. He is one of those quality guys who can lead team during crunch time.”

Unga scored all three of his touchdowns in the first 20 minutes, breaking free for a 52-yard run with 11:12 to play in the second quarter to give BYU a 24-7 lead.

Unga also ran it in from 33 yards and 1 yard and Mitch Payne added a 28-yard field goal.

“(Unga) is a different type of ball player. He makes everything look easy,” Mendenhall said.

BYU, which entered averaging 34 points and 432 yards per game, took advantage of a UNLV defense that surrendered 773 yards last week in a 63-28 loss at Nevada.

The consecutive poor performances could cost Sanford his job. He spent parts of his postgame media conference answering questions about his future.

“Coach Sanford will make sure all of our focus is on the next game,” Clayton said. “Those other things are out of our control.”

The Cougars have scored 136 points to win their three games since a 54-28 loss to Florida State on Sept. 19.

Unga is still upset about that loss.

“Florida State is a real great team and they beat us by playing their game,” Unga said. “I just wish we could play them again.”

A 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Deante’ Purvis gave the Rebels their only points in the first half. It was UNLV’s first kickoff return for a touchdown since 1999.

Hey Scoot, you sound upset. If you were my child, I would put you in time out. I stand about 6 feet tall, have brown hair (blonde when I was 9), have some hearing and vision loss, drive a Dodge Stratus. My mouth was shut the whole time I wrote my comment. I think my tongue was under control during that time. I have voted for a Democratic Senator. I belong to YOUR church and do not see eye to eye with him. I have never tried to stop him from practicing what he believes. Are you trying to stop me? I hope Senator Reed practices his religion--don't you? Last time I checked, I don't have to be either a republican or democrat to practice mine. I can practice politics how I choose. Harry Reed said to a reporter who asked him a tough question: "I hope you go out of business." Is that decent? Look it up. As for my understanding of stereotypes, I once had a Pioneer and now I have a Alpine. Stick with the Pioneer--even if you were joking.

Diego, you have no idea of what you speak. I dont care if you are only joking. Things like your comments can mis-understood by some. You need to control you tongue and what what you say about people and their religion. Harry Reed is a decent senator and just because he is Mormon does not mean he has to be perfect. There are many people in MY church (Mormons) that do not see eye to eye with his actions but it doesnt not stop them from supporting his beliefs and his freedom to practice religion as he sees fit. You have used more stereotypes in your response than you probably even understand what they mean. Since we as US citizens live our lives by simple yet equal rules, people like Harry Reed have the right to religion and politics just like you and I. Lastly, if you dont have anything constructive to say.................SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!!

Well....That should just about do it for the Sanford years at U.N L.(no f..cking defense) V. My God....Have you ever seen a worst defense in your life.....They f..king stink.....I bet any high school team in the nation can put 40 on the board against this f..king mess of a D. I beg and plead the powers that control the hiring in this college to find a replacement for this no-defense teaching f..k. How many more years do I have to sit and pray for a winning team from my home town.....I have never seen a bigger bunch of heartless mofos in my life. lets see.....122 points in two games.....you tell me....time for Sanford to go....or is it me. Its to bad that Singatary (yes i know its spelled wrong) is with the 9ers. He's the type of coach this defense needs. It just eats my ass to see a team that I love so much...play this poorly.....goodnight all....and f..k you Sanford....your three years to build a winner is up..

Are you kidding? Mormons settled Las Vegas. Then they let organized crime take over. But what goes on in Vegas...

UNLV is pretty much considered an extra home game for BYU.

Not only are Mormons allowed in Vegas, there will be more Cougar fans at the game than Runnin' Rebel fans.

Yes, but only those of us who are blind. But if we have 70% vision loss in combination with 30% hearing loss we can get qualify. However if you have brown hair and stand at least 6ft tall you get a free pass to go. Brown hair, 6ft, and green eyes--then no. If you drive a Dodge Stratus and swear you would never vote for Harry Reed, then you can go, but only if you are blonde. Harry Reed (Mormon) senator from Nevada clearly has broken all of the rules. Unless there is a provision for being a Senator, I will check, but even so, I don't know how he got permission to run for office there in the first place b/c he would have broken all of the above rules. But on the other hand, it's not like he hasn't broken rules as a Democratic Senator. On the other hand, if you are a Democratic Senator evidently have free reign and can break as many rules as you want and get away with it. So maybe there is an exception, like Harry Reed, if you are an idiot. Again, I'll check--good question though.
