STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Navorro Bowman almost tripped himself up on his 91-yard run to the end zone.

The Penn State linebacker picked up a fumble at his own 9, then started chugging full speed down the sideline, nearly slipping up at the Eastern Illinois 25 before righting himself and crossing the goal line for a touchdown.

Nearly everything else went the Nittany Lions’ way, too, in a 52-3 rout Saturday of lower-division Eastern Illinois.

Daryll Clark’s three touchdown passes paced the offense, while tackle Jared Odrick (career high-tying two sacks) and Bowman led the menacing defense—at least when Bowman wasn’t trying to catch his breath.

Coach Joe Paterno joked that his athletic linebacker wasn’t in shape.

“Joe’s always got jokes,” a smiling Bowman said afterward. “Man, I don’t make excuses, but I was a little fatigued, just running that far kind of got me.”

Bowman’s TD gave Penn State (5-1) a 38-0 lead to cap off a dominating first half. Penn State scored 28 points the final 7:27 of the second quarter to finish off FCS school Eastern Illinois (4-2).

Panthers coach Bob Spoo said earlier in the week that there was “ray of hope” that his overmatched team could upset a Big Ten powerhouse.

The closest Eastern Illinois came was when the sun came out late in the fourth quarter. Otherwise, the Panthers managed just a 43-yard field goal by Austin Signor.

Penn State bullied its opponent along the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Nittany Lions had season-high 553 yards, including 285 on the ground, and sacked quarterback Jake Christensen five times.

“They just outmuscled us.They just controlled everything,” Spoo said. “That was the basis of it really, we couldn’t block them, couldn’t tackle them.”

Clark opened the scoring with a TD plunge from a yard out, then followed with TD passes on three straight drives in the second quarter. He connected with Chaz Powell for 51 yards down the right seam to give Penn State a 24-0 lead with 4:33 left in the half.

Paterno offered cautious praise.

“We’re not anywhere near as good as where we have to be, but we think we are a better football team than three or four weeks ago,” he said. “We played with a little more poise.”

Later, Eastern Illinois pieced together a nice drive deep into Penn State territory, but Ollie Ogbu sacked Christensen and forced a fumble that bounced into Bowman’s hands.

He was off to the races—sort of.

“I’m sure anyone would be winded,” said fellow linebacker Nathan Stupar, who watched the play from the sideline.

Then, Stupar recounted talking with Bowman when he returned to the bench.

“He got back and said, ‘Stoops, I’m tired,”’ said Stupar, talking like he was out of breath.

Christensen knew his team was in for a tough challenge coming into Happy Valley.

” We knew we would’ve had to be perfect to be in the game. It didn’t work out for us,” the quarterback said. “It’s out of the way and it’s just another game on the schedule for us.”

Leading 38-0 at the half, the most compelling drama of the second half was when would Paterno send in touted freshman backup quarterback Kevin Newsome.

He ended up scoring, too, on a 9-yard run up the middle in the fourth quarter to make it 52-3. It was the highest point total for Penn State since a 55-13 blowout of Syracuse in September 2008.

The outcome wasn’t that unexpected, especially since Eastern Illinois plays in the Football Championship Subdivision.

After a win, the biggest goal for the banged-up Nittany Lions was to avoid any more injuries with Big Ten play resuming next week with a visit from Minnesota. Penn State played without star linebacker Sean Lee (left knee) for a third straight week, and right tackle Nerraw McCormack sat out with a right ankle injury.

It didn’t really matter—Penn State still had too much talent to overwhelm the Panthers.

“One of the biggest tests of a game like this is what kind of attitude your team shows up with,” said quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno, the head coach’s son. “We had to see if the kids could come out and self-motivate themselves, and they did.”

Christensen, a transfer from Iowa who played at Beaver Stadium in 2007, finished 13 of 25 for 137 yards and one interception. Clark was 13 of 19 for 234 yards with one interception to go with his three scores.

Mike M and Lind, I'm glad you weighed in because now I don't have to look for the TWO BIGGEST MORONS IN AMERICA, you two win! PSU loses it's bowls? Before USC, (which PSU beat in the Fiesta Bowl against Heisman winner Marcus Allen), they won 3 straight, and JoePa has the BEST bowl record of ANY Div.1 coach in college football. EIU has put many quality players into the NFL, like Tony Romo, ever heard of him? Guys like LIND and MIKE M always drop their pants to open their mouths.

Everyone knocking the Lion's schedule should know that originally ALABAMA from the mighty SEC was supposed to be in this slot on the schedule. The Tide cancelled the home and home series. leaving the Lions with a hole in their schedule, The only team with an opening at the time was Eastern Illinois. I wonder why the Tide is ducking the the Lions??

Well ole Penn State beats another unrated team again. The only team that was rated that they've played kicked their butt.I guess at the end of the season they'll go to a bowl and all the Penn State faithful will say they deserved it even though played no one with a winning record .Old Joe Pa will get more wins for playing all these loosers.

So many Penn State fans here that aren't happy. Or are you Penn State fans? I think not. Your team stinks so you come here to rip into PSU and Joe Pa. Get a life, a real team and a real coach and get off our backs. Youngstown State and Buffalo? Please. People in glass houses.... By the way sports fans, the Big East was forming and PSU was ready to sign on the line. What happened was Pitt and Syracuse were happy to have PSU for football but wanted them omitted from their elite basketball conference. Paterno wanted PSU basketball to step up by being in a top-notch league. When the Big East thumbed their noses at PSU, Paterno went after the Big Ten and vowed he would not help these Big East teams in the future. Cry in you beer but it was your AD at the time that drew the line in the sand. Paterno simply honored it. Stop being jealous, suck it up and go beat Syracuse. Wait aren't they a Big East team? Everyone keeps telling us they were a cupcake game. That means there are cupcakes in your league. As bad as the Big Ten has been the past couple years, you never hear them say they have a Big Ten cupcake on their schedule. Go State!

All these people who complain about the strength of schedule of the Big Ten, take a peek at reality.

    http://realtimerpi.com/football/ncaaf_conf_Men.html

These people who say the conference is weak need to read this. First, they are "weak" because the media loves other conferences and WANT there to be a BCS conference that is weak so they have someone to pick on....

    Go Big Ten!

Penn State fits in well with the other Big Ten schools. They play nobody, beat nobody, and will lose most of their bowl games. The Big Ten has one win over a ranked out-of-conference opponent this year (and is 1-2 vs that team, Notre Dame).

Even the crummy ACC has three wins over ranked teams (BYU, Nebraska and Oklahoma). And they still have games against Florida, South Carolina and South Florida.

But the Big Ten keeps getting all their OOC wins vs the MAC, Sunbelt and Eastern Illinois. Guess it pads their records and keeps them bowl eligible.

There is no upside to cupcakes. If you win, you were expected to. If you lose, or they even manage to keep it close, it's an embarrassment to your program.

Couldn't agree more with the cupcake scheduling. I blled nittany and despise ohio state but, gotta hand it to the buckeyes for wanting to play the best teams like USC. I disagree with the 2-3 cupcakes in your conference schedule. The Big Ten has more than that try 5-6. Being from PA i am sad to say that the Big Ten football is dead. OK OK not dead but just waiting for the plug to be pulled. I can see SEC teams scheduling all cupcakes OOC, but not no other conference. Even the Big 12 is usually a 2 team conference. Like who ever took Mizzou, and Kansas serious in the last couple years.

Cup cakes are great once in a while, but you've got to diet on hearty vegetables or meat and potatoes to get strong. I am sick of the cup cakes every weak. You have to figure there will be two or more cupcakes to feast on in your own conference every year. Start with a cup cake, move onto a substantial appetizer (up-n-coming mid major) and fill out the rest of the out of conference with other BCS conference teams. What's that 1 or 2 games a year? No team will ever do this now, there is too much to lose with each loss. It sucks, but thats the way it works. It always has for the Texas's and Oklahoma's and now JoePa is on the bandwagon. I hate it. (my pet peave, my rant). thanks. I am a psu fan and I miss the Pitt, WV, Notre Dame, BC and Maryland games. We're all in the wrong conferences.

As a Penn State grad from Pittsburgh, I used to love those thanksgiving friday Pitt and State games, but Joe Pa got pissed at Pitt for not entering into a contract to form a big east conference prior to the big east conference being formed. Hence, he has vowed to keep Pitt off States schedule. I agree with most of the people here, in that , both Pitt ( Buffalo) and State ( E. ILLINOIS) play atleast three cupcakes each year..It only makes sense that they should play each other..Besides, Penn State is something like 26-5-1 vs Pitt all time. A game at Heinz field would be a big payday for both teams. ..and being from western, P.A. it is a natural fit. Oh, one more thing, I love State, but if State were in the big east they would have their hands full with both Cincinnati and the South Florida Bulls just as Pitt would have their hands full with Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio State. Remember, in these times of equal schlorships that bigger is not always better..besides South Florida has upwards of 20 thousand students.

Yea, I know Penn State is too tough for the Panthers. But EIU has a respectable program in its own right. Maybe you didn't know, but the Panthers have produced some pretty good players in the past: Sean Peyton, quarterback in '86 was second in the nation in passing behind Bernie Kosar, now coaches the Saints. And let's not forget Tony Romo. Many other players have went on to become stars in the NFL throughout the years. So as you Penn Fans laugh at the matchup this weekend, try to contain yourselves somewhat and give EIU some respect for showing up to play in the first place.
    Chuck h, EIU alum '86.
