OU’s Bradford has big game in return, beats Baylor

NORMAN, Okla. (AP)—Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford wasn’t sure how his injured shoulder would hold up to a full day’s work.

After 49 throws in No. 19 Oklahoma’s 33-7 win against Baylor on Saturday, Bradford is ready for next week’s rivalry game against No. 2 Texas in Dallas.

“I think that’s something that we were all curious around here is how I would react to 3 1/2 -4 hours in my pads, on and off, not throwing the whole time, kind of sitting on the bench, coming back and making some throws,” Bradford said. “I felt like my arm responded great, and I felt good out there.”

Bradford threw for 389 yards and a touchdown after missing the last month with a sprained AC joint in his right, throwing shoulder. It was the 14th 300-yard passing game of his career, matching the school record set by 2000 Heisman runner-up Josh Heupel.

And he could have had even bigger numbers if the Sooners’ receivers didn’t have trouble handling his passes. Bradford had a career-high 22 incomplete passes, most of them coming on flat-out drops or passes that at least hit his receivers’ hands.

“To have been off as much as he has and go out there in his first go at it to play as well as he did, I thought he played great,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “He stays away from the poor, the negative plays or the bad plays and he had a great night.

“If you add in seven, eight, nine drops—you could cut that and say there’s five legitimate that are dead right in their hands—he has an incredible night.”

There had been concern that Bradford’s shoulder wouldn’t have the stamina to hold up to a full game, but he ended up matching the second-most passes he’d thrown in his career with a 27-for-49 performance. The only time he had attempted more passes was when he threw 53 against Kansas last season. He had never had more than 19 incomplete passes in a game.

“I was disappointed in the drops, but again I think a lot of that is just inexperience,” Stoops said. “We’ve got all kinds of yardage and big plays if we’d just catch the ball better. I’m hopeful and I believe that the ability is there. It’s just time, time on the field for those guys to make improvement and make those plays when they’re there to make.”

Bradford skipped part of Oklahoma’s pregame routine while the rest of the team’s quarterbacks were practicing throwing and then jogged to the locker room while his teammates were stretching as he tried to keep from wearing his arm out before the game even started.

Then came a real scare when trainers huddled around Bradford after he stepped awkwardly on an incomplete pass on his first drive and aggravated a right calf strain that first bothered him in two-a-days.

Bradford, who didn’t miss a play, called that injury “no big deal.” The shoulder is looking that way, too, after he went through a month of frustration not knowing exactly when he’d be able to come back.

“It’s extremely gratifying just to get back on the field, just to be out there with the guys that I’ve put in so much work with in the offseason,” Bradford said. “Just the simple things—handoffs, everything out there. It’s just exciting to be back really.”

Brown’s touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards in the second quarter put Oklahoma up 14-0, but the Sooners (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) couldn’t get into the end zone on their first four trips inside the 20-yard line in the second half.

Jimmy Stevens hit four field goals to tie a school record held by Jeremy Alexander and Garrett Hartley before Bradford finally connected with Adron Tennell in the back of the end zone for a 3-yard score with 4:03 to play.

“I felt good just the way my arm responded, the way I was able to play four quarters and the way I was able to make some throws in the fourth quarter that had some heat on them,” Bradford said.

Brandon Caleb caught seven passes for a career-best 139 yards after moving inside to replace injured slot receiver Ryan Broyles, who is out 2-4 weeks with a hairline fracture of his left shoulder blade. DeMarco Murray added 107 yards rushing on a season-high 24 carries.

Oklahoma racked up a season-high 592 yards, with 203 on the ground to go with Bradford’s big day.

“Sam has that inspiration on the team. He’s a captain and everyone follows him and vibes off of him, and it’s definitely a good thing that he’s coming back,” receiver Cameron Kenney said. “He just made good plays today, and he was just real relaxed.”

Third-stringer Nick Florence started at quarterback for Baylor (3-2, 0-1) for the second straight week, following a season-ending knee injury to Robert Griffin III. He threw for 220 yards on 22-for-41 passing with one touchdown and one interception.

Blake Szymanski, the backup who had sat out last week with a bruised shoulder, replaced him on Baylor’s final series in the fourth quarter and threw a 42-yard completion and an interception in the back of the end zone on consecutive plays.

Jay Finley, the Bears’ top rusher, also returned after missing two games with an ankle injury but had just two carries for minus-1 yard.

The Sooners have won all 19 games in their series against Baylor and won for the 27th straight time at home.

“Of course, there’s room for improvement,” Bears coach Art Briles said. “We knew today would be a measuring stick. We knew today would be a chance to show how good our guys can be.”

They are several things that are going to show up during the game. 1) Colt and Braford will have a great game 2) Oklahoma's running backs will have an average game. 4) Both Defenses will show up. 3) A Texas running back either Whitaker, Johnson, Monroe etc will break a long one (don’t discount Newton) All the Dallas Cowboys will be behind him and his father. 4) Texas wide receivers vs. Ok wide receivers (Texas will win that battle) Oklahoma best wr out. So what’s left.....Special Teams and Defense/4th quarter come back. Texas will start slow and catch-up during the 3rd and 4th quarter. Oklahoma will start blazing hot.. Oklahoma can’t score TDs against above average teams (Look at the Baylor game ...field after field goal...Chokahoma at the end. **** Remember last year Oklahoma Team was alot stronger and better. Texas did not lose but 3 defensive players, a wr and an average running back. Texas 27 Ok 21

I am a huge sooner fan. I bleed red and white, but I think sooner fans should be prepared for a loss this weekend. Texas is going to bring everything they have against us, and against good teams our defense hasn't held up in key situations. Seeing Texas win is the worst thing for any sooner fan, me included, but Im a realist too. Even though our defense plays solid, they seem to give up big plays at the worst time, and the defense can only do so much. When receivers drop ten passes against baylor, what do you think is going to happen against a quality opponent. If the offense shows up, we have a chance, but odds are, that texas wins by 17 or 21 points in this game. I hate to say that as a sooner fan, but it is what it is. As much as I dislike the horns, we need a good showing this year as a conference is post season play. So even though I will be rooting against them in this game, if they do win, I hate to say it but I will be rooting for them the rest of the year. The one thing that I think everyone can agree on whether you are a sooner fan or not is KEVIN WILSON NEEDS TO GO. He has got to be the worst offensive coordinator in the history of our school. He is too scared to use the tools he has at his disposal when he is in the red zone. Who cares if your top receivers are hurt. Try to run it once then pass the ball. This man is stuck on principle and it has cost us several games.

Why is it when Tebow has those kind of numbers everyone says why didnt they pull him instead of running up the score? Anyone else gets these numbers they get a pat on the back.

To all of those whining about the lack of penalties on the Sooners, the statistics show OU with 110yds in penalties while Baylor was flagged for 79yds. So it seems the referees tried to slow OU down more than look the other way. In case you don't realize it, the distance between end zones is only 100 yards. Moving the ball that much seems as though Baylor could have had more. ( ok. the difference is only 31 yards favoring Baylor so I'll let you other pundits fight about it.)

I guess if you're a fan of the field goal unit then the Okrahomo game was impressive. If stoops would have had his way it would have been 200 - 7 but the red zone offence couldn't get it done. Texas played base defense and base offence. Olkahomo played to win at all cost. They had to with 2 loses hanging around their necks. I sure hope Okrahomo doesn’t get to a major bowl only to stink up the Big 12 again.

Plenty of gorgeous girls at the game...if they belong in a dog pound, then I would be happy to serve as a dog catcher.

I have nothing but respect for Texas. Of course I hope the Sooners win, but if they don't...then I will root for Texas to win the BCS. I will always root for a Big 12 team, even if it is Texas.

Hey Matt M, Post 40 - You got it man. The women in Oklahomo should be in a dog pound. Fat, short, cellulite hanging off, fat ankles and big feet. Not like California, or Texas. In addition, the referees and those BCS Politicians also give the chicken crap team the benefit of the doubt. Fortunatly, during a BCS game, they have to call it fair and Oklahomo gets blown out.

well it's the red river rivery game. A few opinions on the game Texas while being undefeated looks capable to make a run for the NC game this year. Oklahoma has been inconsistent with their offense. However Bradford looked good, not great but sharper than most critics felt he would, what I observe is that the OU defense has the ability to slow down Texas. Colt isnt having the year we expected him to have, shut down shipley and texas becomes one demensional , Oklahoma has a better run defense and the secondaries are playing solid which should give Texas some amout of frustration moving the ball the Key to the game lies in Oklahoma's ability to make catches if the Sooner's can hold on to the ball it is very likely they could pull out a victory. these teams are very close in talent and the team that can be consistent will dominate

The real Texas was exposed tonight. The Sharply/ Mccoy dual. Stop one of them and you can beat them. Texas is not that good! Florida is truly the number one team and I would say Alabama is the number two team. USC is my vote for the number three spot. The SEC is by far the best conference. OU does not look that good but I still think that they will beat Texas.

I never said Baylor had a chance, in fact I said that they didn't have a chance if you had bothered to read. My gripe is that OU is the Tim Duncan of college football, the refs are scared to touch them. That's a fact, go watch the game again. Better yet, go have another beer and and give that 2:10am desperate look to the fat fugly sitting across from you.

Actually, James, Utah should have won last year's National championship. They were undefeated (unlike Florida who had a loss) and humiliated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl - dominated them far more than the Gators did. The Gators trailed Bama in the 4th quarter before the Tide started playing sloppy. The Gators, by the way, have a former Utah coach in Urban Meyer (who also took the Utes to an unbeaten, 3rd ranked season in 2004).

Anyway, if Texas plays against Oklahoma like they did against Colorado today, they Sooners will win. Texas won, but many of their 38 points were the result of Colorado errors - blocked punts, returns, ints........The Buffaloes shut down the Texas running game (does Texas have one?) and were tied into the 3rd quarter. And the Buffs are not very strong this season.
