No. 16 Kansas tops Iowa St 41-36 in Big 12 opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)—The way leads and records kept changing hands, even the players had trouble keeping up.

First, Dezmon Briscoe broke Kansas’ career record for receptions. Then Kerry Meier leaped ahead of Briscoe. Then Meier also erased the school record for most catches in a game.

In the meantime, Todd Reesing was throwing for a career-high 442 yards and four touchdowns and No. 16 Kansas was beating Iowa State 41-36 with the help of plenty of last-minute good fortune.

Iowa State’s Austen Arnaud ran around eluding tackles on a fourth-and-9 play and spotted Darius Darks running free into the end zone with about a minute left. But the ball sailed over the receiver’s outstretched hands, allowing Kansas (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) to slip past the 20-point underdogs and remain unbeaten.

“We found ourselves in a shootout and in the end, we seemed to make a few more plays and found ourselves on the top end,” said Meier.

For a second or two, it looked like the ball might settle into the clutches of Darks, who about 2 minutes earlier had caught Arnaud’s 5-yard TD pass.

“If (the pass) is two yards shorter, we’d be having a heck of a celebration right now,” said Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads.

Arnaud had a day to remember, hitting 25 of 40 for 293 yards and two TDs. Alexander Robinson, who missed most of the previous game with a groin injury, ran for 152 yards and two more TDs for the Cyclones (3-3, 0-2).

“I thought I had (Darks),” said Arnaud. “But I just threw it a yard or two too far.”

Reesing was 37 for 49. He tied his own team record for completions and came within 38 yards of the school mark for most yards.

Meier had a school-record 16 catches for 142 yards and two TDs while Briscoe, a fellow senior, caught 12 balls for 186 yards and two more scores. For this week at least, Meier owns the career record with 167 receptions. Briscoe stands at 165. Meier broke the single-game record he and Briscoe had shared.

“You get in the swing of the game and kind of lose track of what’s going on,” said Meier. “I had the feeling I was catching quite a few balls. I didn’t know I was around 16.”

The career mark will be a two-man duel the rest of the year.

“It’s hard to believe there’s a better pitch-and-catch group in the country than those guys,” said Kansas coach Mark Mangino. “I’d be hard-pressed to find a better one.”

After the Cyclones took a 30-27 lead on Arnaud’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Hamilton, Reesing made it 41-30 with a 46-yard touchdown throw to Briscoe and a 6-yard scoring toss to Meier.

“I don’t think you can find a duo who’s better than them,” said Reesing. “If you do, I’ll challenge and say that they’re not.”

One of the biggest cheers of the day was for Jacob Branstetter’s extra point following Kansas’ second touchdown. Until then, he and Iowa State’s Grant Mahoney had combined to go 0 for 3 on PATs, a play that’s usually close to automatic.

After Reesing’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Meier put Kansas ahead 41-30, Arnaud led the Cyclones down field and with 4:55 left connected with Darks on a 5-yard pass.

Reesing, who already owns most of the school’s passing records, hit Meier with a 3-yard TD pass late in the first half and then made it 20-12 with a 4-yard run up the middle with 30 seconds to go.

Iowa State took a 23-20 lead in the third quarter with Grant Mahoney’s 34-yard field goal and Arnaud’s 2-yard run and two-point conversion pass.

“When you’re playing against an offense that is as good as Kansas and has players as good as Kansas does … one stop, you’ve played great defense,” said Rhoads. “Had we gone down and put it in the end zone, I would have said we played a great defensive football game.”

Robinson scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards.

The day started brutally for Iowa State’s special teams, continuing the nightmarish ending to a 24-23 loss the week before when Kansas State blocked Mahoney’s PAT attempt with 31 seconds to go.

Mahoney missed after each of the Cyclones’ first two touchdowns. In the second quarter when Mahoney lined up for a 26-yard field goal attempt, holder Derec Schmidgall mishandled the snap.

This has to be the most back-loaded schedule I've ever seen.

Kansas is ranked 16th and has to sweat out a home victory over the perenial worst big conference team in the country. Any respectable team would be 6-0 with this schedule, the best team you've played is Southern Miss, who you were luck to beat and UAB blew them out.

This Kansas team has to be one of the most over-rated teams in the history of the NCAA, they'd finish last in the SEC.

NU offense won't blow out any Big 12 teams this year. Mizzou gave way most of their scores. NU defense is ok though.

The way the Cyclones keep improving every week, I wouldn't be surprised if they beat Nebraska it's not like they're world beaters.

I'm not saying that NU will smash KU, but to think that the Jayhawks will light up the scoreboard against NU is absolutely ridiculous. I think it will be another great match-up to watch, with a much lower score than people think. NU's defense is for real. Their offense is so-so, nothing to brag about. The Jayhawks have become way too@#$%y...this isn't basketball. Start living in reality, your Jayhawks haven't proved to anyone yet that they are THE team to beat. So keep on talking your trash, but don't start crying when you start losing games.

I get so tired of the bs line that KU hasn't played anyone, whether from you NU morons or the talkin heads on ESPN. Until yesterday Florida hadn't really played anybody either. Hell UK managed to take down their Superman! Bottom line reads this way, KU is unbeaten, 5-0. Make all the excuses you want NU CHOKED against VaTech. Just like OU choked against BYU and Miami. KU just beat NU when they were down, they stomped your team into the turf and buried them. It was a well deserved beatdown for program that gotten way too@#$%y and just expected to lay down in fear of the dreaded NU. The last 10 NU got a taste of the crap that Kansas dealt with before Mangino's arrival, and you don't like it. TFB, get used to it, it's our turn to celebrate for a while.

Ignorant haters can keep coming up with excuses, and qualifiers, they can keep whining about KU's defense or the teams that haven't played yet, and Kansas will keep racking up victories. End of the day, KU is undefeated. The only other Big 12 team who can talk smack is Texas.

Iowa St is terrible at most sports and esp football, KU rolls
    -----------------------
Iowa State is traditionally dominant in wrestling.............which was my scholarship sport in college. I was always surprised that KU and KSU didn't field wrestling teams because they have excellent high school programs and the small colleges are good.

Actually, they gave Kansas a fit today in football.

Anyone who compares one game to another is a moron. So VA Tech beat Duke only by eight, and then crushed BC. Then Tech beat Nebraska. Does that mean Nebraska is about on the same level as Duke? Please. Just b/c ISU put up a lot of points last year, doesn't mean everyone better than them in the Big XII will score that much or more against KU. A different day always brings a different story.

And NU fan, you have been non-exsistant the past few years. One big fourth quarter and all of a sudden you are trying to channel Tommy Frazier. Chill out. This game (or Neb-MU) as nothing to do with what will happen when KU and NU hook-up. Just as the 76-39 beatdown in 07 will have anything to do with the NU-KU game. (had to get that in there)

Sure is interesting how billplays isn't here talking smack, what's wrong bill? Cat got your tongue? He11 the way Kansas's defense played today, a KState wildcat might have your tongue before too long.

You better worry more about your in-state rival before you think about the big dog in the north. You beat Nebraska when they were down, I'll give you that much, but this year you don't have a prayer.

KU fans need to stop talking trash until they have actually played someone. You people need to realize that the thoughest team you have played so far is Iowa State, the 3rd worst team in the Big 12...and you almost lost. You will probably win against Colorado also...the 2nd worst team in the Big 12.

Your defense is one of the worst in the conference, and when you face Oklahoma you will be completely embarrased when Sam Bradford puts up 60+ points.

And for those of you talking down about Nebraska, did you notice that as soon as the downpour let up against Missouri, Lee threw 3 touchdown passes in 3 minutes? Not to mention the star running back Helu was sick with the flu. I'd like to see how good Reesing plays in a monsoon. When Kansas faces Nebraska later in the season, they will be playing one of the best defenses in the nation, and I'm excited to see how many points Nebraska's offense will put up on you when you allow Iowa State to score 36.

Kansas will not win the north, they will be 3rd having lost to Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Missouri.

Nebraska will win the north, they will be favored to win all but one of their remaining games to Oklahoma. Missouri will be second with their losses coming from Nebraska, OK State, and Texas.

Sorry Jayhawks, you may start the season 6-0, but you will be in for a rude awakening when you start playing opponents that aren't laughable.

Horse - Thanks for reminding me how Nebraska CHOKED the VT game away. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! Moreover, Kansas just happened to beat that same team a couple years ago in the Orange Bowl. But, I will give your team props for coming back against an overrated Mizzou team.

Another almost win but no dice for the Cyclones. Following the score I could tell ISU was going to be in it and ultimately lose. Guess what they did. This doesn't much for Kansas, ISU is so-so on a good day, this is a game Kansas should have won by 21+. Apparently they're not that good. Horse M is right, Nebraska will pummel these guys and so will those other teams he mentioned. Any semblance of a defense and a pass rush, KU is in trouble. Guy talking about beating Duke...Hey if this was a basketball board I'd be with you a 100%.

Uh, Kansas was better last year, defensively, and you think they are going to stop Nebraska??? Nebraska's defense is going to stomp a mudhole in your quarterback, and your defense is not going to be able to stop the Huskers. You bring up the Missouri game, you better realize that five inches of rain, along with Missouri having a better defense than Kansas, still equated to a Husker win.

Oh, and for the Big 12 South fan... Oklahoma has lost 2 games by 1 point each? Wow, Nebraska has lost ONE game by one point, AT one of the hardest places to play in all of college football. You lost to freaking BYU at home. Seriously, get a clue.

Everybody just cool down. The Big 12 South is still the dominant division. Oklahoma has lost 2 games by 1 point!!! And that is without their top quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end!!! Texas, meanwhile, can hang 50 points or more each time out, just like OU did last year!!! I am a KU fan for life, but I am a realist, so you all must be joking if you think any North team stands a chance to sniff OU or UT!!! The winner of the North will easily have 3 losses, period.

KU Fan stop your chirping. You haven't beat a "quality" team yet. Keep playing the same as today and you will have more than four losses. Why all the smack talk about Nebraska, I'm from Colorado and I might be wrong here, but Nebraska has owned you for ever. You won 2 years ago, big deal. Maybe you should keep beating up on teams like Northern Colorado, who 3 years ago was a D2 team. Good Job KU way to have a tough pre-season line up.

Horesy, stop smoking what Mizzoura fans were before they got beat by nebraska. We'll have 2 losses at the most. OU maybe and probably Texas. Losses to Nebraska and Missoura? Yeah, don't think so. KU Big 12 North Champs. Deal with it.
