CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)—Mikell Simpson ran for four touchdowns and Virginia’s much-maligned offense erupted for its biggest output in five years as the Cavaliers rolled to a 47-7 victory over Indiana.

Virginia (2-3) entered the game tied for 117th in the 120-member Football Bowl Series in total offense, averaging more than 272 yards per game. The Cavaliers easily eclipsed that by halftime, with Jameel Sewell’s passing accounting for 248 yards of Virginia’s 337-yard total. Virginia finished with more than 500 yards (536) for the first time since 2004.

Simpson finished with 83 yards on 15 carries and 66 yards on four receptions.

Sewell was 20 of 30 for 308 yards in three quarters before turning the reins over to backup Marc Verica.

The Virginia defense did its share, too, in the only game this season between Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference teams.

Simpson’s first two TD runs came after big plays by cornerback Ras-I Dowling. On Indiana’s first possession, Dowling stripped the ball from receiver Terrance Turner, and Rodney McLeod scooped up the fumble and returned it 32 yards to the Indiana 38. Simpson scored on a 5-yard run five plays later.

Dowling’s first interception of the season set up another 5-yard scoring run for Simpson, who also had TD runs of 3 yards and 1 yard before being injured late in the third quarter. The crowd roared when Simpson gave a thumbs-up sign as he was carted off the field to the locker room.

Indiana (3-3) drove into Virginia territory on its first possession of the second half, thanks in part to a 27-yard pass from Ben Chappell to Mitchell Evans, but Nick Freeland missed a 40-yard field goal attempt. The Hoosiers finally broke through with a 12-yard touchdown run by Bryan Payton with 8:18 left in the game.

Virginia’s do-everything Vic Hall had his best game as a receiver since moving from quarterback, where he started the season. Hall, a cornerback during his first three seasons, had six receptions for 85 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass from Sewell—the first TD reception of Hall’s career.

Sewell also had a 1-yard TD run to cap a 77-yard drive that put Virginia up 44-0 late in the third quarter.

Robert Randolph added field goals of 37 and 31 yards for the Cavaliers.

Mike m is cruel, but has a point. The bottom of the Big Ten is really bad. It's probably the bottom of the Big Ten much more than Ohio State's losing streak against really good teams that hurts the rep of the BT. For fans of the better-performing BT schools like Ohio State or Penn St, this may seem great, but it ultimately has negative consequences. When the Big Ten as a whole is bad, it hurts the good schools in recruiting the elite athletes. Great athletes want to go where they will be highlighted in marquee games. The Big Ten is providing fewer and fewer of those.

It's been fun as a Buckeyes fan watching us pound Michigan for so many years in a row, but if we're going to be a better team outside the Big Ten--a better team in absolute terms-- we may ironically need for Michigan to become a better team, too. To say nothing of Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, etc.

It woudl be just like IU to support a "good guy coach" and let it override production. If it was a basketball coach at IU then he would have been gone right after former IU basketball players started a campaign to get him ousted. (love the former IU players who seem to chime in all the time from their real estate businesses since they're still bitter no one wanted a "team player" who avg 3.5 points and who "shut down jordan"...yeah right)

I don't care what football coach they bring in, hell bury Woody Hayes in the pet semetary and bring him back, I'm just tired of them going with coaches who have "Indiana ties" when year after year we strive for just 6 wins and half those wins come each year against creme puffs. Until IU thinks of itself as a football school as well and NOT just basketball then they will keep repeating the cycle and they will have to start giving away free tickets to fill up the stadium... oh wait they already do that and STIL no one comes.

I've been saying it from the beginning ... that Gregg Brandon offense just needs time to take off. As soon as it explodes, it's nearly impossible to stop.

Wow, it is hard to believe Indiana has three wins, they are hideous. They were obviously outclassed by a pathetic Virginia team that gained over 500 yards for the first time in five years. What does it mean when you lose to William and Mary and then totally destroy a Big Ten team who came in with a winning record? If the bottom of the ACC is that much better than the bottom of the Big Ten, wonder how the top teams compare?

What's sad is that IU played OSU pretty well last week then go out and get smoked this week against a UVA team that everyone says is junk. Even with poor coaching IU shouldn't have looked that bad.

Hoosiers simply are no match. I don't know what's wrong with this team. All I can say is that the coaches must not have prepared the players well for the game. It is really a very disappointing result and I hope the coaches understand that they have lost a lot of credibility. i hope it is not because the boys were out drinking the night before the game. Total ineptness.
