COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)—No. 21 Nebraska won’t earn many style points for its 27-12 comeback win over No. 24 Missouri on a cold, rainy night.
Until the fourth quarter, the Huskers were flummoxed by drive-killing penalties, mishandled punts and a stagnant offense. But the Huskers (4-1, 1-0) are right where they want to be after the Big 12 opener—atop the North Division with a crucial win over two-time defending division champion Missouri (4-1, 0-1).
After failing to score in the first half against Missouri for the first time in more than two decades, Nebraska mounted its biggest fourth-quarter road comeback in school history and its first win over a ranked opponent since 2006.
“It’s a great start to Big 12 play,” said defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who finished with six tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and a key interception Thursday night. “We want to dominate the Big 12 North and start it off the right way.”
Missouri, meanwhile, was left pondering missed opportunities after blowing a 12-0 lead through three quarters and allowing 27 unanswered points in a nationally televised fourth-quarter collapse.
The Tigers committed eight penalties for 100 yards, curtailing several early scoring opportunities. In one instance, Missouri got the ball on Nebraska’s 32-yard line after the first of three muffed punts by Nebraska.
But the drive stalled after a holding penalty, two incomplete passes and a sack of quarterback Blaine Gabbert that backed up Missouri to midfield.
“There were a lot of opportunities the first three quarters,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. “If we had done a better job executing there on both sides of the football, it might not have gotten like that in the fourth.”
Nebraska’s defense—which entered the game giving up just seven points per game, best in the nation—helped spur a 20-point scoring flurry over a little more than three minutes early in the final quarter.
With Missouri on its own 21, Suh batted down a Gabbert pass and hauled it in to give Nebraska the ball inside the Tigers’ red zone. Nebraska needed only two plays to score on a 13-yard pass from Zac Lee to Niles Paul, taking its first lead at 13-12.
A 40-yard interception return by Nebraska’s Dejon Gomes on Missouri’s next possession left the ball at the Missouri 10. Nebraska made it 20-12 on Lee’s third TD, an 8-yard pass to tight end Mike McNeill.
Gabbert injured his ankle on a first-quarter sack and fumble but remained in the game. The injury appeared to affect both his mobility and his ability to plant his feet while throwing, but Pinkel said there was little consideration of pulling the starter.
“He struggled a little bit but he felt he could play,” the Missouri coach said.
Gabbert entered the game leading the conference in passing efficiency and ranked fourth nationally in that category. But he completed just 17 of 43 passes for 134 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. It was his first game this season without a touchdown pass.
The win gives the Huskers an early advantage in the Big 12 North race— along with a possible tiebreaker should Missouri finish with the same conference record.
That was the scenario in 2008, when Nebraska and Missouri both finished with 5-3 conference records but the Tigers advanced to the Big 12 title game thanks to a 52-17 win in Lincoln.
Since the Big 12’s formation in 1996, the eventual North division champion has lost its conference opener only twice.
Nebraska coach Bo Pelini was subdued after the win—well aware that his team has plenty to work on after committing 12 penalties, surrendering five fumbles and barely gaining 100 yards of total offense through the first three quarters.
“It’s just part of the process,” he said when asked if the game marked a breakthrough for Nebraska, which hadn’t won in Columbia since 2001. “It’s on to the next game.”
Nebraska returns home to face Texas Tech (3-2) next week. Missouri travels to No. 15 Oklahoma State (3-1).

GREAT GAME for the VT TECH- NU game, it was a great game, I respect your team as you should respect ours.. Yup, that's right, I bleed Husker Red! But like others have posted before, VT fans are a class act, so are Husker fans. We have no major league sports team, why are Husker fans so deep into this? Because it's what gives us pride and somethng worthwhile living here, something amazing, I'll bet you that VT has never had the consecutive sell outs Nebraska has. The first experience (Watching the Baylor Game (2003 or 04) Was one of the most amazing experiences I've had-- Why? Because when your in that stadium, and your wearing red or white, you feel as if your home, and this is my family, this is who we are and how we roll.
I was born in Washington, you have a choice to side with Washington Cougars or Washington Huskies, guess who i choose.. None. I was never a college football fan and believed i would never be... that was well... until i moved to Nebraska in 2003.
people tell me all the time, "What's in Nebraska?" What's so good down there?'' What is worth seeing?" All these can be answered with three words, NEBRASKA HUSKER FOOTBALL. When I came here, I learned from other people how much the Football team is the foundation of what makes Nebraska unique, and what make's Nebraska one of the greatest and utterly amazing states to live in. I watched alot of games from the past, all the drama with Miami, Oklahoma and Texas.
JEALOUS? I bet so Ruthie. To be part of the Huskernation is an honor! if you look on the Hiesman page, Suh was never on the list, look at it now, he is at 31 this week.. Tiebow.. is like at what 11 percent.. HUGE CHANGE.. HUGE SUCESS..
MOST LIKELY: Sam Bradford against one of the most agressive, if not, the toughest defense in the Nation, standing with also, USC and LSU, is most likely to get injured again, that is a huge gamble for Stoops.. is he willing to play Sam. Now say if he gets injured, that pulls SOME pressure off Nebraska, and really, they do have a chance to beat OU. Plus NU-OU is at Memorial Stadium.. Tough to beat us at home. were 3-0 at home this season. I say we have an advantage here. I'd give my faith into my blackshirts, red n white, and couching staff a bet that we'd win this one.
On the Side for Ruthie.. if you say it should have been 3 quarters... Your team would have lost anyways.. right? VT is a great team, they do well, but did poor against us, that's right... we held your team to 16 points.. unlike other TOP RATED teams like Bama..
Let's also mention great players in the NFL who have achieved alot!
Ahamad (sp?) Green (Greenbay, Seattle..etc) GREAT Running Back
Josh Brown (Seattle Seahawks) This kicker was the advantage for Seahawks winning games by a field goal..
The list would go on.. (here is something this week.., Zack Brohman.. 9 Tackles (Career High) in his win vs. Seahawks.
On your side... OHHHH this just gets worse..
M.Vick..... Alanta Falcons... Dog Fighting... Prision.. Eagles.. has DONE nothing since..
I am sure there are others, but not as great as the sucess of our players pass on to the NFL level.

are you guys even ranked yet? oh thats right every ranked team you have played this year has beaten you! when you guys were really good last year, you squeeked by with what a 6 pt win at home? lets say by some odd miracle texas tech does beat the big red. you will still finish 3rd in the south division and nu will play the winner of the red river rivalry. when its all said and done we will still be ranked higher than you and get a better bowl. not to mention a possible heisman candidate, which no matter how many yards ur qb throws for will never get recognition for. and i got ur pucker factor for ya: your qb thinking about big SUH! GOOOOOOOO BIIIIIIIIIIG REEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ESPN also released their top 5 list this morning and Suh is No. 5 on the list.
To tell you how amazing this guy is he ranks 6th nationally in batted down passes. The next defensive lineman on the list is ranked No. 98, all the others are defensive backs. I don't care who you are or who you root for you can not help but be impressed with this guy. NFL scouts are drooling over this guy and my bet is he is taken in the top 3 of the NFL draft, what an amazing year this kid is having.

"A defensive tackle who leads his team in tackles, drops into coverage and picks off passes is every bit as outstanding as a 4,000-yard passer or an 1,800-yard back. The problem is that the average Heisman voter doesn't understand how much a dominant defensive tackle can change a game.
Voters often counter that quarterbacks receive an inordinate amount of votes because the ball is in their hands every play. What they fail to consider is that a player like Suh affects every play in which he participates. Opposing offensive coordinators must design game plans around him. Quarterbacks must always know where he is. Offensive linemen must double-team him, lest their quarterback suffer as Gabbert did Thursday.
So, please, Heisman committee, give me a vote. I'll do exactly as you ask and select the nation's most outstanding player. Right now, that's Ndamukong Suh."
Andy Staples-SI.com, following Suh's effort against Missouri
"Suh is virtually unblockable and he does things no other DT can. He leads his team in tackles, again. That's shocking. That simply doesn't happen these days. You might as well see a 2,500-yard rusher. Last season, he was the first DT to lead Nebraska in tackles in 35 years. To have this kind of production again -- after knowing how he is the focal point of a rival's game plan -- is enough to get him on the Heisman radar. Maybe he can get in the race. I know this -- he'll be in my top five this week because I doubt there are five better players in college football."
Bruce Feldman, ESPN.com
Suh is an average DT.... I think NOT!! He is definitely the star of the defense, but the defense as a whole is exceptional!!

To all the MU haters, well so much for your hot wind, but thanks for a great game.
To all the NU windbags, and you know who you are, quit bringing the great sportsmanship rep of the Huskers down.
I am glad I got a chance to see this game on AFN.
Go Huskers!

I like how his argument for us not being good is that missouri was beating us 12-0 after the 3rd quarter. How is that relevant? Fact is we scored 27 points IN ONE FREAKING QUARTER. Who cares what the score is after 3, that's why you play 60 minutes you douchebag.
Or if you want to play that game, remember that Nebraska was being your Hokies after 3 quarters this year. Or does that not count?
