JACKSON, Miss. (AP)—Trae Rutland had 363 yards of total offense to lead Jackson State past Southern University 22-14 on Saturday night.
Rutland, who averaged 14.1 yards per carry in the game, rushed for 127 yards and was 14-for-27 with 236 yards passing.
Darius Bolela added 56 yards rushing and Bloi-Dei Dorzon added 53 for Jackson State.
The Tigers took a 16-14 lead late in the fourth quarter when Eric Perri kicked a 43-yard field goal. Dorzon added a 9-yard touchdown run to seal the win with 1:14 remaining.
The Tigers (1-3, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) outrushed the Jaguars 246-20, and maintained possession for 11 minutes more than Southern.
Lee Bryant was 21-for-39 with 207 yards and one touchdown to lead Southern (3-2, 1-1).
