Hughes’ TD run in OT give Notre Dame a 37-30 win

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Notre Dame waited even later than the last minute to pull out this finish.

Robert Hughes scored on a 1-yard run in overtime and safeties Harrison Smith and Kyle McCarthy jarred the ball loose from Washington receiver D’Andre Goodwin near the goal line on fourth-and-19 as the Fighting Irish beat the Huskies 37-30 Saturday.

It was the fourth straight game decided in the final 60 seconds for the Irish, the last three of which were wins.

“I’m just happy, really happy for these kids. They just keep fighting and fighting and fighting,” Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said.

The Irish (4-1) stayed in it with a pair of goal-line stands in the second half.

The first was late in the third quarter when the Irish held the Huskies (2-3) for no points on two plays from the 1-yard line on a pair of keepers by Jake Locker. Locker gained a half yard on the first play, but was stopped by Brian Smith and McCarthy. On fourth-and-goal from the 1, Locker lost a half yard when Kerry Neal and Harrison Smith stopped him.

“The first one was so close we almost challenged it so we came with a different formation again,” Washington coach Steve Sarkisian said. “It was so close. It felt almost odd when you look at both tries.”

Chris Polk appeared to give the Huskies a 30-22 lead with a 6-yard TD run with 7:07 left, but after a review he was ruled down on the half-yard line.

“I felt like I got in the end zone,” said Polk, who ran for a career-high 136 yards.

The Huskies couldn’t advance the ball on three tries, but got a fresh set of downs when Notre Dame nose tackle Ian Williams was called for roughing the snapper on the field goal attempt. The Huskies couldn’t get it in on the next three plays either, with Locker being stuffed for no gain from the 1. Erik Folk kicked a 24-yard field goal to cap the 19-play drive that ate up 9 minutes and 19 seconds on the clock.

“The whole game came down to that double goal-line stand,” Weis said.

Sarkisian said he could hardly believe the Huskies couldn’t get the ball in.

“I’ve never seen so many guys get tackled so close to the goal-line that many times,” Sarkisian said. “Obviously it’s frustrating when you had an opportunity like we had there in the fourth quarter to put the game in a situation to be a two-score game, and we weren’t able to do it.”

Jimmy Clausen was 23 of 31 passing for a career-high 422 yards, the fifth highest passing yardage in five seasons under coach Charlie Weis. He had 67-yard TD pass to Golden Tate, a 77-yard pass to Tate that set up a field goal and a 12-yard TD pass to Kyle Rudolph with 80 seconds left to give Notre Dame a 30-27 lead.

“It’s just a great team effort and a great victory for us,” Clausen said.

Folk kicked a 37-yard field goal with 6 seconds left to tie the game at 30.

Golden Tate caught nine passes for a career-high 244 yards and a touchdown. He set up Hughes’ TD run with a 22-yard catch on the first play in overtime.

“I guess we’re just a clutch team,” Tate said of the last-minute wins.

Locker was 22 of 40 passing for 281 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown, but couldn’t come up with the big play in overtime as he had three incomplete passes and was sacked for a 9-yard loss.

“I feel like we should have won that game, but we kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” Polk said. “I feel like we left some opportunities on the field.”

Nick Tausch tied a Notre Dame record with five field goals as Washington’s defense repeatedly held the Irish out of the end zone.

Linebacker Manti Te’o, a highly rated recruit playing extensively for the first time, finished with 10 tackles.

Washington cornerback Justin Glenn broke his leg, Sarkisian said.

The Irish had lost three straight in overtime, including to Navy two years ago and to Pittsburgh last year.

McCarthy said the last minute wins are “pretty fun.”

“But it’s much more fun afterward,” he said “It’s kind of shaky during the game.”

ND having there own t.v. contract and being on t.v. every week gives them an unfair recruiting advantage and the ncaa should stop it.They should be able to get the best players every year and whoop everyone but they dont.

    To Chris H
Im not a USC fan,but atleast they play in a conference where ND does not.Its alot harder to play conference foes cause they know what your doing when you play them every year.ND might play some teams every year but they are more focused on winning there conference.USC beat a so-so Ohio st. team the best team ND has played is Michigan and they lost and Michigan was so great last year and is a middle of pack big ten team hmmmm where Ohio st. is the top big ten team.Join a conference and learn some facts your self. And they should have a play off.

First, its about time ND got a break by the refs after three straight games of terrible calls that obviously favored the big ten schools by the big ten refs.
Second, why would ND ever join the Big Ten? They are Big East in every other sport and therefore would join the Big East. Besides, joining the Big Ten would give them a cakewalk every year. The Big Ten isn't sh*t. At least ND plays all Div. 1 opponents. Name me a Big Ten school who does that? Schedules are made years in advance and when you schedule 1-AA teams, you are trying to make sure you have a cakewalk schedule. If you want to have a weak schedule, you don't deliberately schedule 12 Div. 1 teams. Enough said.

Those Big East 'officials' in the replay booth OVERTURNING a Polk toudhdown that even NBC broadcasters employed practically by ND thought was a touchdown gave ND a chance at a goal line stance that they never should had. That CLEAR touchdown puts Huskies up by more than a touchdown and big east refs in booth but a different conference on field IT WAS LIKE - 'how can we make ND like us enuff to consider one day joining our conference for football too?'

How this wasnt the lead and was buried by the highlights and in most articles NOT MENTIONED AT ALL befuddles and bewilders me. TALK ABOUT BURYING THE LEAD....

Should it have been made a moot point by Washington AND was the Goal Line stance impressive ... sure ... bui the fact remains that POLK scored a touchdown and Washington won that game, and i do not ahve a dog in that hunt ... INDISPUTABLE evidence is needed to overturn a call on the field, and even the NBC broadcasters agreed that Polk scored on the scamper THUS the goal line stance as impressive as it may have looked is AS TAINTED AS COLORADO winning on a firth down all those years back!!!!

The reason ND isn't in the Big Ten is that they don't have the academic and research qualifications to be associated with the CIC. Has nothing to do with sports. They are working toward being qualified, and once that's done perhaps they will join.

Hey ND faithful- it looks like Uncle Fester took a hike or is he desperately trying to find out the answer to my intellectual question?? Anyhow, can not wait until the big show down in a couple of weeks against a very good USC program. We will certainly have to play our best game. Hopefully they fertilized the field last night and lose the key to the mower until Sunday Oct. 11.

Is that "into it" or "in to it" Mr. Wizard?? Just wanted to check and make sure your education credentials were up to speed. Where did you get your degree from Mr. Wizard?? Why dont you call some of your freak friends up and get a good game of Dungeons and Dragons started. This may be more up your alley instead of trying to mix a conversation about football with religion.

    Weis.....an extension.......are you nuts?????
His play calling is very questionable sometimes...like at the ND/Michigan game ---which I was at....or last year at the ND/Pitt game---4 overtimes...which I was also at......bad play calling

Look, I am a big ND fan but no way in hell he should get an extension at this point (he got one in his first year as the ND administration handed him a 10 year extension---the bigest idiot move in all of college football!!). He won a couple of close football games....which is good, but they were expected to win anyway. No coach should have more then a 3yr deal--too much risk for the program as a whole. Charlie Weis still has wayyyyy too many dis-believers in the Notre Dame faithful. He coaches too much like a Pro-program. By that I mean the thought may be big deal if we drop this game--we have next week. No you don't Charlie. There is no if I only win my division, keep the team healthy, they work hard in the playoffs and lets go buy ourselves some better players (like USC--Reggie Bush CHEATER!!!!)........back on subject, like Charlie had at New England. He coaches like that :(

And to John H----we were NOT screaming that we are "back on the national stage". We are just excited that we won a few close games---the ND program has a long way to go before they are back!

    Go Irish!

ND is lucky that Washington did not pay off the officials call the game in their favorite like Michigan did. As far as for USC, well, we pay our players to play the game and to win....so we do not need the officials to be on our side!!!
