Mallett leads Arkansas past Texas A&M 47-19

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Ryan Mallett shook off a slow start and threw four touchdown passes to lead Arkansas to a 47-19 victory over Texas A&M on Saturday night in the revival of their Southwest Conference rivalry.

Mallett misfired on his first three passes, was sacked twice and hadn’t gotten a first down when the Razorbacks were trailing 10-0. Then the big sophomore hit Joe Adams for a 67-yard gain to start the next series, and Arkansas (2-2) was on its way to scoring 30 points by halftime. The Aggies (3-1) were never able to get back into it, and the Razorbacks never let up.

This “Southwest Classic” was the first of at least a 10-year series held at Cowboys Stadium in hopes of cashing in on recruiting and alumni riches in the Dallas area. The game drew 71,872 fans, but it didn’t hold their attention for very long.

The more lopsided the score got, the more folks went for long strolls to check out the $1.15 billion stadium built by Arkansas alum Jerry Jones. Many headed home by the middle of the fourth quarter, although enough Hogs fans remained to crank up a loud chant of “S-E-C! S-E-C!” in the final minutes.

Both teams saw this matchup of unranked but proud programs as a way to measure themselves. The Razorbacks were wondering if their two-game losing streak was a byproduct of playing two highly ranked SEC foes, and the Aggies were wondering if their 3-0 start and eye-popping statistics were the byproduct of playing three cupcakes.

Conclusions were easy to draw.

Mallett, a sophomore transfer from Michigan who won a high school title in Texas in 2006, finished 17-of-27 for 271 yards and an interception, while throwing touchdowns to four receivers. Although he fell one TD pass shy of tying the school record he set two weeks ago, the poise he showed despite those awful first three possessions bodes well for Arkansas as it heads into the teeth of its SEC schedule. They get Auburn next, then play at Florida and at Ole Miss.

Texas A&M’s Jerrod Johnson was 30-of-58 for 345 yards and two touchdowns, with most of the numbers piled up mostly after the Aggies fell way behind. He also had two fumbles—one that was returned 85 yards for a touchdown (turning a potential go-ahead drive into a 21-10 deficit) and another in the closing seconds.

A&M gained 458 total yards, well below the nation-leading 574.3 it was averaging. The defense gave up nearly as many points in one game as it had in the previous three games combined and had only two sacks, both in the opening minutes, after coming in with a national-best 4.67 per game.

So much for the lift the Aggies sought by wearing white helmets for the first time since December 1978. Their all-white look might be headed to mothballs for all the good it did them. They’ll certainly be looking for something different when they open Big 12 play at home against Oklahoma State next weekend.

A&M’s Von Miller, who came in with a national-best eight sacks, had the first against Mallett but was neutralized after a few series. He also had the hit that forced Mallett’s interception, just his second of the season.

My hat's off to the Razorbacks - just can't figure out how the Ags can finish ahead in total yards, time of possession, # of first downs, and give up fewer turnovers, and so far behind in points scored! Frustrating!

Where does this guy think Mallett played high school ball? Mallett didn't win a state title in 2006. He played for Texas High in Texarkana, and the only title they won was in 2002. He wasn't even in high school then. He did have to play the next year in the state semi-final game as a freshman, after the starting QB got busted for drugs the morning of, but lost. Lost in the regional finals his sophomore and senior years. His junior year lost in the first round, in a game they could have won, to Matthew Stafford led Dallas Highland Park, who did win the title that year. A Texarkana team did win a state title in 2006, but that was Liberty-Eylau. LaMichael James, who is doing some good things in Oregon, was on that team.

The Hawgs can go 2-1 over the next 3 games and set themselves up for a decent bowl. We believe we can outscore the burners and nuttless has peaked at old stinkypiss and it's all down hill for here on out for them. Of course I wouldn't be suprised to go 1-2 either.

Don't get it wrong them backs are going to have their hands full the next 2 to 3 weeks in the SEC so I'm looking for them to lose the next 2 game the war eagles and the gators we don't have enough speed on defence at the D-back for any of those teams. I'm a BIG HOGG FAN WHO STAY IN TEXAS BUT WE WANT HAVE ACHANCE IF THE DEFENCE DON'T COME UP REALLY BIG IN THE NEXT 2 GAME!!!!!!

In all fairness, the first 3 quarters our running game was horrible, we did pick it up, that's one of great concerns. A&M did run well early on us, we did enough to stop them and win the game, but our defense needs to stiffen a bit, I'm still not totally satisfied with this area either, but considering how awful our secondary was against Georgia and Alabama, we have improved some, we're going to need it the rest of the season. I'm hoping we finish 6-6, 7-5, considering our talent and schedule, that would be a good season for us! GO HAWGS!!!

How did TAMU fall this far? First, they fired the best coach in school history in RC Slocum -- a GREAT recruiter and likable good 'ol boy from the Louisiana swamps who believed in good old-fashioned SMASH-MOUTH football. Second, they replaced him with a weaselly little pipsqueak from the midwest named Dennis Franchione who had never played football IN HIS LIFE and who believed in things like "finesse" and "precision" and trying not to hurt anyone's "feelings". With slightly less personality than a spatula, I'm sure coach Fran got laughed out of many a recruit's living room in the four years he was there. The only blue-chip recruits Franchione ever got were the ones who had dreamed of playing for A&M since they were six years old. I don't think he EVER won a single recruiting battle with Mack Brown or Bob Stoops. I am a UT alumnus and remember the days when A&M consistently finished in the Top 10 under Slocum. As much as I hated A&M, I always liked RC and could not believe that they cut him loose in 2001. Texas has been in a similar situation in the past trying to recover from the destruction wreaked by Coach John Mackovic, but they didn't fire Darrell Royal to get him! A&M will be back, but it is going to be a long road to recovery.

By the way "Arky" is not that bad, this may not be their year. Wait and see next year we are loaded on offense with nothing but young talent. Lets see if you will be saying that next year about this same team that will all be back. Auburn next week at home if we are to win that game and build confidence, I think there will be a chance we will still look at a bowl by the end of the year even though it might not be a good one. Go hogs!

If Arkansas is that bad what does that say for the Big 12 this year? Two losses for Ok, Loss to Houston by Ok state, and this ass waxing by Arkansas. Texas looks to go unchallenged and play the winner of florida and alabama in the championship game.

Arkansas has beat Texas twice in the last four times they have played, and now texas a&m. But I admit they did have a poor showing in the two USC games in which USC players were having their way with their cheerleaders by halftime. And the Missouri cotton bowl was bad as well.

They should drink heavily in Arky tonight. After all, this is the first time in a very long time that Arky has not embarrassed itself in a non-conference game.

Sounds like there were lots of inbred retards in the stands at the end of the game. But only SEC fans think Arkansas is any good. People who actually know something about football know Arky is bad.
