McCoy’s 3 TD passes lead No. 2 Texas in rout, 64-7

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—After two weeks of first-half hiccups, slow starts and shaking off symptoms of the flu, No. 2 Texas’ goals were simple: get the touchdowns rolling early and put the game away in a hurry.

Done.

Colt McCoy threw three first-half touchdown passes and the Longhorns rolled to a 40-point lead by halftime before cruising to a 64-7 win Saturday over Texas-El Paso.

“That,” McCoy said, “was a good day.”

An easy one, too.

The Longhorns (4-0) turned in a dominating defensive performance and burnished McCoy’s Heisman Trophy campaign on a day some other early contenders faltered.

McCoy, who battled the flu a week earlier, shook off an early interception for a touchdown to finish with 286 yards on 28-of-35 passing. He connected with Dan Buckner for scoring throws of 36 and 15 yards and with Jordan Shipley on a 16-yarder.

“I had a lot more energy in practice this week,” said McCoy, who left the game after Texas’ first possession in the third quarter with Texas leading 50-7.

With hot and steamy weather conditions perfect for their hurry-up offense, Texas had little trouble moving up and down the field. Texas had more than 300 yards passing (335) and rushing (304) for only the second time in school history.

“It wore us out,” UTEP coach Mike Price said. “We were running guys in and out, trying to keep fresh.”

The 64 points was the most for Texas since a 70-3 win over Colorado in the 2005 Big 12 championship game.

“You hate to beat somebody that bad … but the game just kind of got out of hand,” Texas coach Mack Brown said.

The Texas defense forced five turnovers by UTEP (1-3) quarterback Trevor Vittatoe and held the Miners to 53 total yards and seven first downs.

Even the special teams had a record-setting day.

Freshman D.J. Monroe’s 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter was his second of the season. Monroe is the first player in Texas history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in a career.

UTEP’s first turnover got Texas rolling.

Sergio Kindle sacked Vittatoe on the fifth play of the game, causing a fumble that set up a 3-yard run by Tre’ Newton. Kindle’s hit was the first of four Texas sacks.

“I got around the tackle and, once again, the QB was sitting there waiting for me,” Kindle said.

McCoy made his only mistake in the first quarter. Melvin Stephenson II jumped inside Shipley for an easy interception and scampered untouched toward a large group of Miners fans behind a corner of the end zone.

“It was a great feeling. I felt like we had a chance,” Stephenson said.

Monroe doused the fun seconds later.

He took the kickoff and broke into open field to his left. Miners kicker Kyle Peterson wasn’t going to catch the former Texas high school 100 meters champion.

“I think we have a chance now, every time somebody kicks it to us, we can score,” Brown said,

McCoy’s first touchdown to Buckner made it 23-7. The scoring pass to Shipley made it 33-7 before tailback Vondrell McGee, who had lost his starting position to Newton, took a pitch from McCoy and scrambled 23 yards for a score. McGee finished with 104 yards rushing.

Texas kept up the pressure.

“We started the game like we were behind,” Buckner said. “We wanted to score every time we got the ball.”

McCoy was intense, pumping his fist and yelling at receivers after a couple of dropped passes. His second connection with Buckner was a nifty one-handed grab over two defenders a minute before halftime, Buckner’s fourth touchdown of the season.

“He made that look real pretty didn’t he?” McCoy said.

With the sun still pounding the East side of the stadium, many Texas fans had seen enough and started heading for the exits. Easily half of the announced crowd of 101,144 did not return for the third quarter.

The only thing those that stayed could have been curious about was how long McCoy would stay in the game. McCoy drove Texas to a 21-yard field goal by Hunter Lawrence before he was relieved by freshman Garrett Gilbert.

The Longhorns played a good football game. Colt passing for 3 touchdowns and having one Interception. However the Longhorns showed solid improvement in the running game. Last year the longhorns placed rather low in the rushing column but the longhorns did have to compete with the pass happy Big 12. The one problem that the longhorns did have was holding on to the football, the horns did have several fumbles late in the game. But the fumbles were from the freshman running back core. Freshman running back Newton continued to impress us, but I would like to see a little bit more of Whittaker. I think that he could be the longhorns running game. And of course don't forget big Cody Johnson. He has not played as much this year as most people expected. But I look for to letting the big man play against OU.

That's a lot of Offense. If my Sooners keep improving over the next few weeks (by getting over Miami first of course) then we could be in for a really good game in Dallas. Hoping Bradford is 100% by that game and our O-line can actually withstand a good pass rush from the UT D-line. Hope the game is mistake free and called good as well. I hate it when great games are ruined by horrible officiating. But regardless I have a feeling this is going to be one of the better OU - UT matchups we've seen in a while. Gratz on the big win Texas fans. Looking forward to seeing you in Dallas for what I believe will end up being a great game. Boomer....Sooner

HOOK 'EM The horns played TCU a couple of years ago and beat them. Its gonna be UT vs. FL, for BCS champ
    ----------------
They were a young team in 2007. They should have met up last year. Anyway, I think the Longhorns will drop this year's Red River classic to the Sooners. Florida will get surprised as well by a team in their conference. 'Bama will run the table and drop their season finale to rival Auburn. You may not have an unbeaten team in the BCS - but you may in the tough non-BCS conferences like the MWC. Meaning, TCU could be this season's Utah (the Utes should have played Florida last season instead of Alabama - they were unbeaten and humbled Alabama in the Sugar Bowl).

Pretty standard for "big-time" teams to schedule less powerful non-conference games early. One of the main reasons for this is specifically to allow opportunities for 2nd-stringers to compete/execute in real-time game situations. You never know when the 1st-teamer will get hurt and you need guys to step up and perform so the team doesn't miss a beat.
The benefit for the team playing "up" is that they realize they will not get better unless they step up and play the big boys. They have to take some pretty heinous defeats on the way to building a competitive program.

Texas really needs to get their passing game in order and find guys who can catch the ball. There were at least 4 catchable passes (that I saw) that the Texas receivers dropped. These guys had better to learn to hold on to the pigskin by the time UT plays OU and OSU or they'll be sorry. On the plus side, I really liked what I saw of Colt McCoy's back-up.

post # 60 sulla - way to show class punk...in football when a player goes down (even if it is a rival team) you go to one knee and you show respect and pray that this player gets up and is not seriously hurt....you need to grow up and learn what true sportmanship is and what being a fan of the sport of football is about...yea we talk trash but you don't talk down about a fallen player...I would hate for other fans to talk down about any Texas player if they went down with injury....I will apologize for this poor excuse of a Texas Longhorn fan...hope Tebow is ok and also for a speedy recovery

kristin f. They started dropping the ball in the fourth quarter and not completely letting utep run, but being rly easy, and utep cudnt score, texas plays with great sportsmanship.
lind: utep is playing a team like texas, their not gonna be good, colorado is gonna get pretty embarassed also, texas is too good.... utep is good, but not texas good.
one thing i have to say, tho is, i dont think texas wud win any of these games if they didnt have a qb like colt. Mack Brown is one of my fave coaches, one reason is his recruiting.... we wouldv ben dominated by tech if we didnt have colt.. colt is the best qb anyone cud ask for for texas, i feel very graceful to have a plyr like colt on my fave team.... Oh. And for the record, I attended all of the Texas Games in 1990, my last year, and most of the games during '85-90 when I could - times were tight and studying was hard.

Anyway. My point. I was a bit disappointed that Texas fans left early - but hey - the day was beautiful and the celebrations started early! I never left early! Stayed the entire game...win or lose.

Issac, I appreciate the fact that you at least had some respect in your comment. Its nice to know there are some people out there that won't call someone else's opinion stupid and look like an ignorant jerk.

And to be clear, I did NOT say celebrating after a victory is bad. I said celebrating after a score should be more regulated. If the game is over, do whatever you want. I expect more in-game class from people that could potentially be role models.
